The date is set. May 28th, 2005 (Saturday) for the Chestertown Boston Whaler Rendezvous at the Washington Pavillion on the Chester River in Chestertown, Maryland. The hours are the same as last year; 8:30-5pm. Hopefully the weather will be as nice as last year! Event will be catered, golf contest, trivia contest, lots of WHALERS and of course, many prizes and giveaways all day. Please register online at; whalertowne.com. Last year we were caught a little short not expecting that many people so want to make sure there's enough for everyone.
If you have any suggestions or comments, they are always welcome since this event is for all you Boston Whaler Owners! See you at the Baltimore Boat Show!

I got to say the weather last year "on the Water" was anything but nice!! We had 3-4 foot malstom to deal with all the way across the bay and into the Chestertown River. Maybe your talking baout the weather when you got to the river or dockside! By that time, I couldn't feel my hands much anymore! On the way back it kicked up again crossing back over to Sandy Point, that part of it was painfull.

Having said all that, It was a great day for everything else, and I highly recommend everyone close to the event to take it in. We had a wonderfull time with wonderfull people,...

But I would prefer and warmer day with calm water:))

The party was great. but the ride over was what Whaler's were built for.

Last year's event was simply fantastic, and so much more than we had expected. All Whaler owners in the mid-Atlantic area should give this party some serious thought.

Here are some links from the 2004 event to get the imagination going while the snow flurries keep coming down:

Looks like there will be plenty of water at the dock this year.

Last year I had the pleasure of helping Scott with shuttle duties. You meet the nicest people in a Whaler. I am looking forward to this years event.

I've signed up,my wife and I are looking forward to our first Whaler event. We will be coming from either Allentown ,Pa. or Bethany Beach , De. My total knowledge of the area is that my daughter checked out Washington College, neat town. I love that the drug store has a soda fountain! We will try and meet up for a run with the boats. Thanks for posting info about this event!......Jack

jack,

If your daughter ends up at WC I can tell you it's a great school, when I was there it was 1/2 liberal arts and 1/2 pre med. Chestertown is a neat little town but its a little town, although I am still partial to the drug store with the soda fountain.

Look forward to seeing everyone.

I looking forward to this years event... Had a great time last year... The rough water on the Bay crossings last year only served to give me much more confidence in the sea-worthyness this great boat has... Four foot waves in a 16 foot boat is what I call EXCITING.!!! To think some people pay a small fortune at carnivals for this kind of ride.!!!

Just boat an 84 11 foot whaler. Does that qualify my to be part of you fun?
We will be dragging it behind an old trawler. Chester rive is a great place to cruise. Have two children 5 and 8 and look forward to getting involved.

To Chesapeake Bay area Boston Whaler owners, there is an email mailing list for get togethers, misc chit chat, and what not. There is no cost or obligation to join the mailing list. It's all about the Whalers, after all! Send an email to ChesBayWhalers-subscribe@yahoogroups.com and follow directions that will be sent back to you. Email me with any questions, kevingregg@comcast.net. See you in Chestertown (if not sooner!) Thanks, Kevin

HeHe I'll be there with bells on!!!! A lot will depend on weather for that day...but planning on it in the Nantucket "DasBoat" I was behind Ed in his 16 footer that day last year and let me tell you...it was pretty freakin exciting in the nantucket too!!!!My other half says shes not getting knocked down again and black and blue!!!The again the 4 footers were hitting her from three sides that day!hehe....After that, nothing could be that hard again could it???

Lets see what the weather holds as we get closer...were registered 2 adults, 3 dogs, and a partrage in a paer tree!!!!

I plan on making the crossing again this year... About the only thing to prevent me would be a heck of a storm... However, in the event of really big waves, it would be nice to run in the wake of one of the larger Whalers... Getting air-borne is fun for the first mile or two, but it does get a little old after that...

Yiddil, I have a little bit bigger Whaler, 20' Revenge, so maybe we both can follow Ed this year. It would be nice if Ed could knock the waves down a little so we won't spill our drinks or appetizers! We are registered for two or four adults, hopefully the bay will cooperate!....Jack

NewPort, belive me when I say, No One was eating on the trip over, yes its 75 mile round trip so you have to watch your oil consuption(right Marlin) other wise you can not here the bells go off teliing you your gonna blow your engine in 30 min. hehe (Not Funny) once we found out what that was...I get to the mouth of the Bay coming back and say" heck with this, Im gonna keep going" , and so we made it back with 2 inches of oil left:)WHEW that was a clkose call....Belive me your not puring oil in 4 footers!!!!Ed actually had the best ride being out front even if it didn't feel that way to him...

Once in the Chester River things calmed down, bit not until then...going back to Sandy point all was fine till we hit the bay again...WHAm! it picked up...Belive me...no eating...I held onto my steering wheel for dear life both ways! Boat did great...people hurt, hands numb with cold...

Yet very exciting and worth the pain!

Is anyone interested in camping on Sat night after the Whaler Regatta in Chestertown? This campground is just a bit upriver from the bridge in Chestertown. If interested, we should make reservation soon. I called this place just a few weeks before last year's Regatta but it was sold out. I have a good amount of camping gear which has seen very little use over the years. Let's do it!

Kevin, regarding comping, my 'good amount of camping equipment' fills up most of the back end of my pick-up. I think I would have to drive there. Does Duck Neck have a boat ramp? I saw no notice of one on their web page although it did show a dock.

No idea on boat ramp at Duck Neck. I will make call to them this week. (Did you have trouble viewing their "map" or "rates" page?) Suggest you fill Montauk with as much camping gear as it will hold before launching at Sandy Point and heading towards C-town. Kevin

A little info on Yiddil. if it calls for over 1 foot waves on the river, he is inching out of the no wake zone , poised to run for cover :)

As for running port or starboard, it all depends on if I am solo or not or how the bay is on that day. Hopefully I will have the prop dialed in and have her looking good with freshly done teak so if the bay is flat, I may have my other half ride in Das Boat and I will take Evenstar across. If not, I will arrive via land and not by sea.

I must say there was nothing cooler than cruzing around the harbor, watching the british get dumped in the water from the deck of a 320 Outrage.

Not sure I can top that this year but I am quite sure it will be a fun day none the less.

Kamie, Ill work it any way you want:)Jack, no problem come and run with us, Ed, I'll go out in front, not a problemMe thinks I got my butt for being behind a few boats last year! hehe Something tells me it didnt matter were you were, if you were out there last year you hit lots of air!The more the merrYer!!

Actually KAmie, I really dont mind a ft. or two...I can bronco bust with the best of um...Just the other passengers flying out of the boat, or hitting the deck and cusing me out is what gets to me:)))But I'm gonna be prepared this year, warm clothing, gloves, chemical warmers, snow boots, whatever!

Like I said, its will all depend on the weather conditions on the bay. Scott says if its ruff out there, we can launch on the kent Island side somewhere, he will give me that info maybe on sat. and we can make the call the day before or sometin...

My biggest issue will always be pullin "Das BOat" from CPM in ST. Mary's County and taking it home(some 76 miles) the day before and then the trailering and launch from SAndy point or were ever the next day. Wish I could rent some help:)) I will have at least the Bow Doger working this year:) and maybe full cover if I can figure out the best way to do that with the Bimini top...come across the bay in a body glove:))

:)

Thanks.

The map above list launch ramps in Maryland. Since the chester river divides Queen Ann's County and Kent County you can launch anywhere along it. If you wanted to make the run up the river but not deal with the Bay you can start around Piney Narrows or Centerville Landing if you want to be a bit farther up the river. I have never launched at any of them so I would advise you to check them out prior to the rendezvous day.

As for activities I am not sure what the folks at Whalertowne have planned for this year but I am sure it will be fun.

If you are planning to come you should register at www.whalertowne.com/teaparty.asp The registration fee this year is $20 per boat. Considering all the fun we had last year and the good food, it's a deal. Registering helps Rick and the Whalertowne folks get a good count so they can have all the goodie bags prepared and the food ready.

I must say that every event I have been too, sponsored by Whalertowne has been tops. They really know how to throw a party. ( <- this was an unpaid for, shameless plug for a great Boston Whaler dealership)

Thanks Kamie, coming from about 4 hours away, it would be nice to know a couple options if the water is bad, I'll get on that Chesapeake Whaler Club, soon, and hopefully a heads up by local Whalers can let me know to bring my boat or not. I'm sorta inclined to bring the boat either way....Jack

Bulldog,

If your coming from PA and you want to bring the boat you should probably plan on launching in or around Chestertown. You would go past chestertown to get to the Bay.

I better start researching and getting some charts I guess, I though Sandy Point park was on the opposite side of the bay from Chestertown. Half the fun of the trip was meeting the crazy bunch that runs the bay on the way. My name had been "Newport Jack", I've changed it to match the name of my current boat. Anyway, I should have a current chart of the Chesapeake Bay in the boat as common sense. It's pretty nice up in here PA. today, but I'm in the basement working on a teak bow pulpit. I do have lot more questions, but they can wait for now, thanks..........................Jack

Bulldog,

Sandy Point and Chestertown are on opposit sides of the bay, actually if you want to get to Sandy Point, head for Grasonville and cross the bridge. That will route you through DE and the eastern shore and is much shorter than going around 95 from Newark. If you decide not to do the Bay crossing you can always just head into town. I should warn you that pulling a boat through Chestertown on Tea Party day is a challenge since the streets are narrow and they have a bunch closed off. I almost became a parade float last year

Kamie, Prxmid, we'll be there in a 20' Revenge. Sorta wish I was a little older so I could take my teeth out and put them in a jar for the ride! My wife and I are coming and will probably have another couple along, but if the locals check the condtions and say it will be too bad then we'll just drive down to Chestertown. I'm assuming that it will be like last year with an 7 o'clock start or so, so it will be a long day for me, probaly pullout of driveway at 3AM and plan on sleeping somewhere on way home home...Jack

It is safe to leave your car at sandy point state park. Everyone should consider launching at Kent Narrows. There is a great ramp under rt50 on the West side with plenty of parking. This gives a protected trip all the way to Chestertown.

Just like to give everyone an update on the response so far-there are currently 79 adults, 25 children and 11 dogs registered.
I agree that it is much better to launch in Kent Narrows on the Eastern Shore. At least your on the right side of the Bay, unless you're "hardcore" like Yiddel!
"Tea Party" should be a great time!!!! We will be opening the new location on May 7th. It's great!!! Come by and see us!

I hope ALL of us will launch at Sandy Point and make Bay crossing.

Oy Vah! qstrew...Since when did I become "Hardcore"? hahahahaha Now maybe I was hardcore a few decades ago...ya should have seen me then! I was quite a boychick!!! But now...hahaha..a bit on the weathered side:)

People, there are a lot of ways to skin a WHaler...so when we start apouching the day we will better know about weather conditions and where the best place is to launch from, meeting places and times, channels monitored etc.Set up a plan A and a Plan B...If the weathers nice on the bay...If the weathers not nice on the bay....

Someone send me that info on the kent Island launch area...Please...as that will be my plan B, dont forget plan C...driving there....either way, we can make plans to meet one way or the other:)

But I would suggest a couple of things from last years experience...

1- Bring some warm clothing
2- Bring some extra Oil
3- bring safety gear
4- go across the bay with other Whalers (remember, this is 75 miles round trip)
5- Make sure your electronics and radio work, you need to know what its like out there on the return trip also!
6- Do not try to keep up to the 32 Whaler:)
7- Bring a jack and lug wrench that fits your trailer(car ones don't always fit)
8- Get gas the nite before..not everything is open at 6am!
9- Expect to see Scott in a Revolutionary War drag, and lilly white legs with no tan! on half a whaler when you get there...(This can be hard on the eyes hehe)
10-Bring a hook, your gonna drop it and be ferried to shore at Chestertowne..
11- Bring an appitite, the food will be plentyful and delicious!
12- Sandy Point was a dream to lauch from...lots of spaces and little traffic that time of the morning:)

Having said all that..now I need to get my boat in the water....gonna try and get Das Boat cooking next weekend, again weather permitting:)

AHHHHHHHH Spring!!!HURRY!

Not sure about the number of boats, and or leaving from Sandy Point. There is also a contingent that will leave from other places, meet at Sandy Point of just leave from other places and head up to CHestertowne, as per last years event. People came by boat from all over the tri-state area...

I would suggest that as we get closer to the date and have more weather info we can talk about how many, from were, and were to meet to head out together, but one thing is for sure, were talking about lots of Whalers...

I believe the number I heard yesterday from an inside source is 100 people so far. Not sure how many boats but that number really depends on the weather.

If the bay was like the river this weekend even I might make the trip over.

I'm going to Wisconsin pick up my new 21" Outrage this weekend. If all goes well I'll be registering for the Tea Party. I'm on the Severn River near Round Bay. Is there anyone going from that area?

There are currently 5-6 Whalers coming from Annapolis and Severna Park area. The NCAA LAX Tourn. is in Phili. that weekend so all the die-hard lax groupies will be headed north. I can say that, as a past-groupie myself. Much rather be out on the boat with friends. If you need further info. contact me directly.

Fisham, Sandy Point is a wonderful facility and with your "Big Boy" you should have no problems launching from there that morning. You may want to fill up the day before as I dont remember seeing a gas station near buy open that early in the morning...LOts of us left from there last year and lots more will again this year....you may want to set up a backup plan a and b if your hear theres a gail blowing though....like launching over on the kent Island side of the bay or even chester river...always good to back up your plan:)

Thanks for the info. I've launched my old boat (Dauntless 15) from both Sandy Point and Kent Narrows before. Unfortunately, I'm going to be in the water already. I'm keeping my new boat on a mooring in Severna Park. I wonder how many gallons of fuel I'm going to eat up that day?

Yep...its almost time to start getting your planning hats on as I hear from Whalertowne...there's gonna be a a whole lot of whalers in the water that day@!!@!

Sandy Point has great launch facilities...last year was my first time there and because we all launched early(7-7:30am) things went smoothly although Kamie had some prop issues and had to pull "EvenStar". "Das Boat" my Nantucket was in the water by 7:30 am...I trailered her up from Colton Point (76 miles)the day before, filling her up ahead of the Sandy Point Launch. Then the 35 min trip to SP was a breeze. My only issues were getting her out of the water and in by myself with a ginger back...but all worked out.....

I learned from last year that you have to come prepared for the weather for the crossing across the Chesapeake...Last year the weather reports were not accurate..Bring some warm clothing, gloves, extra Oil, Gas if you need to, safety gear, etc....nothing like running low on oil in the middle of a malstrom! Having more canvas this year than last will help cover any passangers too me thinks... make sure your boat has what it needs...its not a short trip...couple of hours as I recall.. we all kind of met up right out infron of the bridge and left in groups..no one need go it alone:)

You will need an ankor...as there arn't hardly enough slips at Chestertowne...we ankored out and got ferried in By some weird guy wearing a skirt in half a Whaler:)) hehehhe. I'm sure WHalertowne will post more soon:) If you have any questions you can email me backchannel..

Henry (and others),

There's a good guide to MD ramps at

http://mddnr.chesapeakebay.net/fish/state2.html

I used the Goodhands Landing ramp in Queen Anne's County last season. It's just on the south side of Kent Narrows. For those county ramps, you need to purchase a permit (3-day or annual) at one of the local bait & tackle places. I don't remember the price, but it was more than a couple dollars for the 3-day. I think it was about $40-50 for the annual, which I didn't get.

I've also used Mattapeake State Park, also on Kent Island. It's got plenty of parking and a nice breakwater, but once outside the breakwater it's very exposed to everything but an east wind. I think the ramp fee there was only $2, probably the least I've ever spent to launch.

I will say that yesterday when I went to visit Whalertowne's new facility in Grasonville the bay was so flat that even boat drifting weren't really rolling at all.

Lets count last year as the exception and not the rule and see how things go.

There is an excellent ramp under Route 50 on the West of Kent Narrows. There is plenty of parking and I believe the area is covered by the highway (I may have a wrong memory).

On another note: We traveled to Saint Michaels on Saturday and the wind and waves were huge. A Northerly wind made waves of upto 5 feet. Luckily we were on the Whaler.

There is some confusion , but that is to be expected. I think that there are a bunch of people planning on meeting at Sandy Point State Park at about 7-7:30 with Kent Narrows as a backup plan if weather is bad. This is my first year and I'm game for either location, just would like to be with someone that knows the area a little bit as this is my first time in the Chesapeake Bay.....Jack
Yiddil posted 05-17-2005 01:37 AM ET (US)     Profile for Yiddil  Send Email to Yiddil
DelaGator, Bulldog is correct...A lot of people will meet at Sandy Point...with other locations as well, and additionally, there will be plan B, C, and D if the weather turns rough. When I asked about the Narrows lauch site, I was asking as a back up, plan C, D...When we get close and have the most promoinent weather reports, we can best choose were to meet to launch...Sandy Point is still Prime PLan A though...until we hear of bad weather...so it goes like this....for me...

Plan A Sandy Point Launch(primary Launch Site)
Plan B Kent Narrows Launch(secondary Launch Site)
PLan C Another Narrows Site
PLan D DRive up by Car...

Others may come from other places I havn't mentioned...but Sandy Point is a good locations for most! Lots of ramps, good facilities, plenty of parking!

We will be bringing 3 dogs, 2 adults, so weather is important...ones 30 lbs, ones 40 lbs and one is 125 lbs...They all have Ruff-Ware Life Jackets:) ...to cute for words.. But Im not gonna bash um around in 4 footers!!!hehe Hells bells, Im not gonna bash me around in 4 footers...LOL

anyway, the next ten days will tell:))

Things are looking good for me to make this trip! That's great, 'cause last year was a lot of fun. It's also a great way for folks without much open water experience to get out there for a reasonably long trip with lots of support.

Yep! Marlin is absolutely correct!!! Best darn time to get out there with lots of support over a reasonably long trip (75miles) I know when Marlin, ED and I took off last year and watched a lot of boats just take off, we stayed pretty close together and really not only enjoyed the trip, but it was very comforting to have what I joking refer to as "Wing Men". We also hooked up for the trip back...and Im sure we wil all find people who will leave at the same time for the return trip to Sandy Point...That trip made long standing friends that I boat with regularly a year later, some have slips in the same Marina...Kamie, Marlin, Ed, Scott, Kevin........Thats what I call a squadron!!!You can join us or other and stick close and know we wont leave you going it alone...Just look for us in the parking lot...Planning on being there early if the weather is good:)...........

Check the posts from last years event.....lots of good info and insight has to how we handled it last year...........

Get them boats checked out and ready...times getting short!!!

Yiddil, I'm in as of yet, although my wife isn't thrilled about spending a day on the boat in the rain. If it's raining, I can't promise to be in the boat, either way I'll get to Chestertown though. You have my cell number call me before you pull out. My wife is now thinking we should put the pickup truck camper on the truck to come down, I'll never get an extension hitch in time, and more grief. My trip time says three hours, seventeen minutes, that isn't too bad, we leave home at 4AM we should be there around leaving time. I'm going to splash the boat this weekend rain or shine and do a good check out. Yeah, I'll bring up the rear, in the Revenge!.........Jack

Don't sweat the small stuff....Lets see how it goes the next few days....Like Ive said before....70 degrees is okay, but bring warm weather gear...the thing that will stop you or make it painfull will be WIND that produces waves 3-4 feet coming at you from three sides like it did last year!...It was a great trip and even the smaller boats did fine...its the people who felt some pain:)...Ed's sortie a much smaller boat than ours made the trip and looked great doing it..he was our leed boat!, so I know we can make the trip...its the wind and waves I look for...On Das BOat, I have a forward dodger, so thats different from last year and gives us some cover...for those not handling the helm...

Lets see how the next few days shapes out..........we can all tak about it then and make the call....Theres always Plan B, C, D....

Im still planning to do the Sandy Point to Chestertown run and have invited Kev and Kamie if there boats are not ready....

We will know in a few days...things change...out there:))

Ok Henry, I already booked a room at the Comfort Inn three minutes from Sandy Point. The forecast sounds good to me, I'm not too worried about rain, but thunderstorms and big water might change my mind! Either way, I'll be at Sandy Point with or without my boat, to help put you in, save the back! I'm not sure what I'll be driving either a Honda Pilot or a Chevy Silverdao with boat in tow with "Bulldog" on the sides. I'm getting my stern seat modified and welded Friday morning and heading down Friday afternoon. I finally got a chart of the bay area, beings I have no GPS I feel better with something in case we get separated or something. I saw that Ed is coming down in his boat so we'll let him knock those big 12 inchers down!..............Jack

Ill be looking for you at Sandy Point...if something changes drasticly...youl see it here first......

Coming back is always tricky, but usually it will be with a group...and usually we will check weather reports with Scott(WHalertown) and other to leave in good time to be back at Sandy Point before its real late or weather turns around to the negitive side...

Ive got a 188C(Garmin and maps) so do others and youl not be alone out there...

I guess it's getting pretty close to 'Tea Time'. I was wondering, is everybody aware of the dock situation at the pavilion? Due to limited space and shallow water anchoring out and being shuttled in, is a neccesity. Use channel 71 to contact the harbor master (Scott), to arrange for shuttle to and from anchorage. Be aware of overall dock
etiquette. Handling the projected number of boats will be a piece of cake.

I plan on being there, not at dawn's early light, but early enough to assist anyway I can (Valet anchoring).

My daughter Amber and I plan on launching from Rolph's around 07:00 AM. This early will really annoy her.

Does anybody have an idea about the overall number of boats we are expecting?

Looks like the tide will swing around noon. Every body should have adequate ground tackle. I know this is the Eastern Shore but a chunk of cinder block and 50 feet of poly rope is not adequate ground tackle LOL.

Looking forward to a good time,

JUst getting in.......Was out with Marlin today for a few hours down at Colton Point Marina...was a pretty day....but very strenuous on the neck and back backing the trailer into the water Thats the worst for the old back and neck...I got "Das BOat" out, thanks to some help from Marlin. Bob, thanks for the help, the pointers, and the good company today...I can't thank you enough for your support.:)

I left CPM around 3pm as the thunder clouds were approching...but never saw rain...Last year I did this trip two days before and had a day to rest my back...
This year, I think I waited much to long to pull her, as I found myself under "DasBoat" most of the evening with a lot of touch up of bottom paint to do...not sure it was ever preped right from the get go...paint CSC, shouldn't peel off after a month!!!But Im sure that didnt help my back and neck...which has left my back and neck pretty sore with the trip, pulling her, and then the painting...

So...If you don't see me at SP by 7:30 AM, means my back is to sore to make the trip by boat, but I will meet you all there and attempt the ride by car instead...Ill see how things feel in the morning........

The weather seems to be holding at least until the afternoon...so if Im doing better Ill get to SP...if not anyone who was gonna hook up with us should seek out some of the other people...don't worry, they will be there...and Ill see you at Chestertown....Now for the heating pad....Yiddil

My pleasure Henry, it was a beautiful day and I had a great time. See your email about pictures.

For the Sandy Point crowd, I'm afraid I won't make it there tomorrow. My daughter's birthday and concert performance are the afternoon and evening priority, leaving not enough time to make the trip. Hopefully I'll still manage do drop in by car, at least briefly.

The latest weather reports call for a high in the mid-70s, partly cloudy in the AM with scattered showers and T-storms in the PM. Winds SW around 5, waves less than 1 foot. Not too bad, I hope you all have a great crossing.

I've already inked in the Bay Swim (June 12th) on the calendar, so hopefully I'll see a lot of you there! That was a lot of fun last year, too.

THANK YOU CHESAPEAKE WHALERTOWNE for yet another great get-together in Chestertown! It was a great time, the weather was perfect (never mind a cold front that blew through). Rick and Laura (and the whole team) are a class act, a first rate business, and great friends.

The ride back across the Bay to Sandy Point was incredible! Once we got near the Bay on the Chester, we had 4 footers & 10-15 knot winds... just like last year. I'm sure glad I was in a Whaler. (Thankfully, the early morning ride over to C-town was nice and calm the whole way.)

We can we go again? [smile]

Glad you made it back. I knew you were in for a ride when I hit the Severn River Bridge and had to hold onto the wheel with both hands cause the wind was really blowing.

It was a fantastic day. The folks from Whalertowne really know how to throw a party.

Just want to ad my Thanks to Rick, Laura, Bart and Scott, another great day.

Tying the Rendevous in with the Chestertown Tea Party is great. Fantastic job with the give-aways, prizes and food.

The Ride over was glass, couldn't have been easier. The ride home was something else. Rain, 30 knot winds, washing machine seas in the Chester, Then when we hit the bad, it got bad, 4 footer 2 seconds apart.

My wife and daughter are real troopers, next year, I think I'll drive over.

Great job guys....Steve

Thanks much to Rick and Laura (and others) for putting so much effort into this event to make it such a great time for us... It was a good crossing on the way to the party... The return trip proved to be interesting... Sortie did the job with very little complaint... The driver did not hold out nearly as well... This year I had put in a third gas tank (6.5 gal) and strapped it in the stern... On that way back across the Bay I kept hearing what I tought to be the tank thumping against the deck... Once I got to Sandy Point, I found to my horror that it wasn't the tank making the noise... The Bearcat is mounted the old way with stern clamps and two 1/4" X 2 1/4" lag bolts (outside lowwer of clamp)... What I found was the bolts had ripped out and the clamps became about 5 turns loose... The motor was about two more turns of being free from the stern... YIKES.!!! It appears the Bearcat mounting was not designed for the air-time I gave it on the return crossing...This will be corrected.!!!

Thanks again to Whalertowne for all their efforts (and large financial donation) for making this a fantastic day for the whole family... Great people, great boats, great fun... If there ever was anything better, the good Lord kept it for himself...

Ed....looks like you dodged a huge bullet. Dropping an engine in those seas would have been ugly.

You can say that again... Must be due to all the good clean living, no, what a minute, that can't be it... But, maybe this was a sign I had ought to start (he he he)...

We had a great time, stayed down at Sandy Point another day , just got home tonight! Great bunch of people , food was great, and Steve did get my wife to ride in half a boat! I know that the ride back was tough , but at the end when the bridge at Sandy Point came into view, Ed started to come around and pass us,then the race was on! It was neat to see all those Whalers running hard in that big water, I wish we had a picture of Eric's Revenge totally out of the water. We took several pictures of Ed's "Sortie" out of the water, I would think Ed was nuts to run with the big Whaler's but he ran the whole way hard, and everytime I looked over he was giving me the thumbs up while his boat was clear of the water! Chesapeake is a real neat area, we'll be back, Whalertowne, thanks for throwing the party, I'll work on my golf swing!................Jack and Pat

Jack, It's all a perspective thing... Some look at Sortie as a 36 year old Nauset, I see it (and use it) as a 16'6" jet ski (he he he)... I wish I had put the motor tilt up a couple holes (non-hydralic) further to keep the bow up more... With it down like it was, the old style hull design can (and does) beat the heck out of ya...
I too like the last leg of the trip (race)... It was cool seeing all the boats working so well in there element (ruff waters)... In the 1-2 footers ole Sortie can hold it's own with the bigger boys... But when it comes to the kind of stuff the middle of the bay offered, you bigger boats have it all over me... I was pushing it just about as hard as I could handle and was just barely keeping up... A few of the waves I hit so hard that my feet left the deck... If it weren't for the "death grip" I had on the wheel, I would have departed from Sortie... But, every once in a while, it's really fun to turn back the clocks and act like I'm 18 again...

Ed, what great stories of the return trip...except for almost loosing the Motor...I must say I would never have made it back wise, then again, I made lit both ways last year so maybe it woould have been okay..My other half thinks I would have landed in a hosp. with more spine surgery...UGH...the thought.....but I really missed the run with you guys, but it was super seeing everyone again...Hope the repair is small Ed, I know Kevin's back hurt the next day, so Im thanking myn lucky charmed I didn't attemp it...I almost was gonna go back with Kevin, just for the heck of it...Pat nixed that Idea...She's tired of being a full time nurse after spine surgery:)) Cant say as I blame her:)

Boston Whaler (Corporate) has posted photos of the event on their website for your enjoyment. I have made no attempt to determine whether they are duplications of those previously posted by Whalertowne.
