We've got three boats on line for sure for our informal cruise and rendezvous starting in Bodega Bay, heading down past Pt Reyes, past Bolinas, no stopping to troll for salmon at Duxbury since the season won't be open for another month, around Pt Bonita and under the Golden Gate Bridge, maybe a stop in Sausalito or Tiburon for coffee and a burger, past Angel Island, under the Richmond/San Rafael Bridge, up between the Sisters and the Brothers, past China Camp and the Pumphouse, up the San Pablo Bay to Blackpoint and Pt Sonoma, then finally up the Petaluma River to the Petaluma Marina ramp.

Total estimated distance, about a hundred (statute) miles.
Total estimated time, with decent weather, about six hours.

Boats already committed: Marc Hammond/halibuthunter (OR 17), Warren Tom/WT (Montauk 170), Tony Wilde (OR 18). Royce Meyerott is a big 'maybe' either as a sibling in his OR 18 or as 'mother' in his OR 25 cuddy.

Date: Real flexible but sometime in the first or second week of March. We'll try to firm up the date in a couple of weeks; after that we play it by weather ear.

Time: Early departure from Bodega Bay (no later than 7-7:30 a.m.) to hit the best weather on the way down outside.

My wife will shuttle up to six participants back to Bodega Bay from Petaluma Marina in her van so we can pick up our trailers...about 45 minutes each way.

Y'all come. The three of us have been corresponding via phone and email, and the trip's shaping up well. Email any of us for more info. Informality and slow (Royce!) and steady cruising are the only rules, other than having a fun adventure.

By the way, Royce and I know these waters pretty well, except for the approximately 12-15 mile run down between Pt Reyes to Duxbury, because we've fished them for years from two different directions (from the SF Bay around the corner north to Duxbury, and from Bodega Bay south to the end of Ten Mile Beach at Pt Reyes). With average weather, meaning wind and swells from the northwest, the trip should be a pleasant downhill sightseeing tour outside, and once in the Bay it should be pretty mellow heading back up north, especially if we get an early start.

Tony

And I promise to stay in the main channel in San Pablo Bay and not end up on the mud for six hours...

Tony,

Is NorCal anywhere near me???........... :-)

Wish I could make it but it is too far for me to drive for such a short stay...

I know, Joe...breaking trail and mushing them huskies all the way down here to God's country towing your sweet OR 18 would be a little much for a couple-of-days visit. Still, you and Janet made it to the NorCal rendezvous last year, even though you both had icicles hanging from your ears when you arrived.

We'll miss you on our little mini-cruise as well as at this year's rendezvous...sorry you can't make it.

Tony, I'd love to meet you guys in Tiburon for the second half of the cruise. I'm out of town on weekend of the 11-13, but could make it the 1st weekend.

Guys,
That sounds like a great trip, but in all honesty I'll be lucky to get my winter projects on the boat done in time for the salmon opener. On the list (so far) is:

1) Recaulk floor seams
2) Repair numerous small chips in gelcoat on boat interior
3) Replace heavy guage primary wiring (2nd most critical)
4) Replace drain tube in cuddy sump (most critical)
5) Replace pump, wiring and plumbing in stern baitwell
6) Fix/replace numerous ticky-tack electrical items
7) Build and install second half of teak console top
8) Build and install under gunwale rod racks
9) Build cuddy v-berth filler
10) Get new cuddy cushions made
11) Run new wires for downriggers
12) Touch up bottom paint
13) Install new anodes
14) Run new wires/plugs to downriggers

After the opener, but before the Rendezvous:

15) Throw away drum brakes, install new Kodiak discs
16) Clean up marginal trailer wiring
17) Replace selected bunks/brackets on trailer

Throughout it all:

Do my share with the kiddos, and don't let the house fall down around me. No doubt some of these items will get deferred again, but the critical ones will get done before she's launched.

Yikes, Andy. I hate those little lists. I've been putting off some maintenance items on my boat as well, but now that we're getting some sunny (or at least not rainy)days my excuses are swiftly evaporating. I did some scum-line reduction yesterday with oxalic (sp) acid hull cleaner, and gave my boat and trailer a serious power spray washdown, soap down, and washdown again, so Cetaceous is looking a little better. Her teak's way overdue for her monthly maintenance coat of SeaFin oil; I still haven't hooked up the new main antenna; etc, etc. It never ends. I've scheduled a slot this coming Friday at my local Yamaha dealership for the motor's 300 hour 'tune-up,' so I'm also in the market for a low-interest second trust deed on my home to pay for same :-).

Sorry you can't make the cruise, Andy, but I'm glad you're coming to the rendezvous in May. In my not-so-humble opinion, your 22 stole the show last year.

Tony

And Rob/ratherwhalering, I'll give you a call when the date is firmed up; maybe we'll stop at Sam's for some grub and hook up with you there.

I'm into it it now...rear deck pulled, old caulk hogged out, dead anchovy removed, mysterious cuddy cabin leak identified...these projects have a way of growing, but I'll sleep better at night when it's all done.
andygere posted 02-14-2005 02:44 AM ET (US)     Profile for andygere  Send Email to andygere
Oh yeah, add "replace fuel hoses" to the list. May as well do them now that the stern deck is off and out of the way.

This little cruise is still on, with at least three of us committed and a fourth vacilating. I'm out of town Feb 26-Mar 2nd, and some work's being done on a couple of the other Whalers, so the first realistic date, depending on weather, will be sometime toward the end of the second week in March. The more the merrier...

I was thinking this week because the temperatures are supposed to be in the mid-70's. I just looked at the weather buoy at Bodega Bay; 12-16 foot swells Wed-Fri.

Maybe next week. I can probably sneak out on a weekday.

Sounds great, Warren. Hope the warm weather holds and the seas lay down a little. I'll contact Marc to make sure he's still on line and next week is good for him. By the way, did you get your kicker set up, WT?

Tony

WT posted 03-09-2005 02:17 AM ET (US)     Profile for WT  Send Email to WT
Tony:

I got the kicker 2 weeks ago. I may install 2 down riggers if my wife doesn't kick me out of the house when I ask.

What's up with Bodega Bay? Tomorrow's swells will be 18 foot every 17 seconds?

I need to get out on the ocean soon. I'm starting to get the shakes.

Now (Fri 3-18) we've got rain and small craft advisories with southwesterly winds through early next week...not good. Shall we start thinking about mid-week or the end of next week? Are we still on, guys? If the dicey weather keeps up for another twelve days, we can combine our cruise with some salmon fishing.

Tony

Next week is bad for me. I'm getting 2 downriggers indtalled within the next week.

I'll be ready for salmon.

Warren

Still lookin' bad, Warren, Marc, Steve & Royce...rain and 18 ft (!) northwesterly swells with 20+ kt southwesterly breezes sweeping across them predicted for later today, and small craft warnings in the SF Bay, with the system intensifying over the next couple of days. Just sounds like a whole bunch of fun out there, eh guys?

Last year salmon season didn't open until mid-April, and for once opening day was real nice. Hope everything calms down soon, or we'll be having a disappointing opening day and week this year.

What's the interval on those 18' waves? We still might be able to do it. :-)

And since you mentioned the Salmon opener. Are we going to try for a post opener on Monday, April 4 weather permitting?

The hell with our little cruise, at least for a while with this kind of weather, but I'm sure hoping we'll get a nice salmon opener on April 2nd like last year.

That window is very short. Two days of a 5 foot swell could be nice whale watching. Hey WT, nice fishing PWC! Where do you put the salmon?

Hello, guys (except for Warren...I don't socialize with PNSNS-CWV* owners),

Well, it's Easter evening and it's blowing 25.3 kts outside, gusting to 33 kts, raining heavily with the barometer at 29.71 inches and falling...glad we didn't do it today?!

This system looks like it's going to stick around for another couple of days, and I'm heading down to LA for three days beginning this coming Wednesday, so it looks like our proposed trip is off for another couple of weeks at least. As we all know, salmon season opens up this coming Saturday, and Marc/halibuthunter and I have planned a Monday April 4th trip out of BB if the weather is halfway decent...feel free to join us (in my boat, Warren, if you promise to leave any photos of that other thing at home). I'm not sure whether I'll even try for opening day...I predict an absolute madhouse at the ramp in the morning and a serious mess pulling boats out later in the day, especially if the usual afternoon wind has picked up in the harbor.

I still very much want to do that trip, and since we waited this long it might be fun to stop and troll for an hour at south-Ten Mile and then later at Duxbury. Let's stay in touch.

Tight lines,

Tony

Tony will probably tell me to shut up, but you did miss your
window on Saturday, at least in Monterey. Adm. Linda and I
ran the Montauk down to a dive site off Yankee Pt. called
Flintstones. That's about 28 miles, round trip, plus another
five miles for a side trip for whale watching, and it was
nice all day. Kawika went several miles further south in his
Montauk and would have gone all the way to Pt. Sur but for
an evening commitment.

It blew like hell in Monterey today.

I had a forum member install 2 Scotty downriggers on my Montauk 170 yesterday. My son has basketball tournaments on the next two weekends which means I can't get out for salmon. I would love to sneak out on April 4th so I can test out my downriggers on the salmon.

I'll keep you posted.

Is there still any interest in a long joyride? I have a lot of aging fuel I have to burn and the trip sounds like it would be fun.

WT: Are your downriggers electric or manual? I have been thinking about getting them as well. Someone suggested I get manual ones for ease of maintenance purposes in the salt water environment etc. What is the best way to go?

elaelap posted 04-14-2005 12:58 PM ET (US)     Profile for elaelap  Send Email to elaelap
Looks like it's going to happen later in the season, diveorfish. I'm still up for it, but I'm going to concentrate on salmon fishing for a while now that the season's open. We could easily combine the cruise with fishing breaks along the way, down at 10-Mile and then around the corner and down at Duxbury. Of course you would be welcome, as would any other Whaler fiend. I'm also looking forward to Warren taking leadership in an albacore run out of Bodega Bay later in the season, since he's the guy who's so far run furthest offshore in his Whaler among our little cadre.
