Based on the positive feedback during our 'Beat The Mid Winter Blues' luncheon at Newick's in Dover, NH this past Saturday, I'd like to suggest a new spot for a Spring rendezvous.

It seems a good spot for a Spring rendezvous could be Fox Point in Little Bay, just a bit west of Newick's.

It's a great place to anchor or raft up, plenty of room for those who wish to tube or ski with the family, and when the weather cooperates, the shallower water is quite comfortable for swimming.

The public ramps in Eliot, Dover, and Portsmouth are all close by, with full marine services at Great Bay Marina, just across the bay from Newicks. The striper fishing near the bases of the Sullivan Bridge is excellent, just mind the rip. The schoolies near Goat Island are mayhem on light tackle around Father's Day as well.

Hang in there, Spring's a comin'!!!!!

Sounds good. I stand by my guess that those things are to protect fishing rods. Humm.

Brian -

Now tell me that this year you will actually attend!!!!

What dates are good for you guys.

Memorial Day Wkd is bad for me.

I'm in of course. I'll Meet John at the mouth of the Merrimack, and we can boogie up the coast and up river.

Oh, and those things are not for fishing rods. I discovered the real use, but I can't give all the details. I will only say that the velcro is more convenient than hand cuffs, makes less noise, and is gentler on the skin.

Phil - guess I deserved that one.

However, I am pleased to point out that it was indeed my original thread that started the 'Seacoast Rendezvous' concept........

I can't help it if you all picked the only weekend I was out of town all summer....should I read something into that?

Memorial Day is probably a bad idea, just like July 4th and New Year's Eve......

Since Mr. O'Leary will probably still be compounding his hull prior to Memorial Day, what say ye about Saturday, June 4th? That way, there's no conflict with Father's Day parties or traveling the following weekend.

Also, if anyone wants to tie up at the Portsmouth Public docks afterwards and rip it up, availability is still good that early in the season.

This is starting to get good. Newt good idea for us to meet. I have no clue how to navigate that area. Thanks.

I will have to try those Velcro things out. (on myself)

I think that Fox point in Great Bay is a great location and I also vote for June 4th. That early in the season may not be good for anyone who wants to go into the water but I don't plan on getting wet. Those of you who are new to the area, be sure that you follow the buoys to get there and not be tempted to take a short cut which might result with a meeting with the rocks. There are moorings there that usually available for pick-up on a first come first serve basis but if they aren't available then anchoring should be fine.

Unfortunately I missed the Newicks get together and I look forward to meeting everyone.

Hi guys. I just spotted this thread. I've been working near Seabrook for the last two months and if anyone wants to get together and lament about not using our boats let me know. I'll be here for another week or two or three. I've gotten to use my rig in Fl only 4 times since Thanksgiving. If get to come back up here this spring or summer the boat is coming with me.

Just drove back from NYC and crossing the Piscatisqua (sp?) I craned my neck northeast to see if I could locate the spot to no avail.

On my return to the house I found another 14 inches of snow. Think that makes over 100inches for the season.

Oh spring ever going to come? This is getting really really old.

Phil - couldn't agree more.....I feel like Jack Nicholson at the end of 'The Shining.' Keep the axes away....

The proposed Rendezvous spot is not visible from the I95 bridge, and not even from the General Sullivan bridge on Rt. 16 connecting Newington NH to Dover Point...

That's why I think it will make such a great rendezvous spot....calm conditions, plenty of room to raft up and cavort, many ways to get there, and unless you're looking for it, few can find it!

Should keep all the Sea Ray and Bayliners 'at bay.'

We're getting close. I'm hoping to get in the water towards the end of April. Another week of this rain and warm temps, and the pile of snow blocking the boat in will be gone!

Nice website Brian, but it loads kind of slow for me...maybe the pics are large files?

GF, are you going to show me where the fish are this year? Or do I need to stake our Ferry Landing and follow you around?

gf posted 03-30-2005 12:25 PM ET (US)     Profile for gf  Send Email to gf

newt, I'm no expert!

I hope to launch on Saturday, April 23 (high tide around Noon) at Cashman on the Merrimack for a shakedown run upriver to Rock's Village and back and then my sons and I plan on being on the Parker River on the 30th (high tide around 5:30 PM) to try for our first striped bass of the year. We caught our first one on May 1 last year.

This is all highly speculative at this point. I still have well over 3 feet of snow blocking the path from my boat to the driveway and I'll be out of town April 18-22 so I'm hoping I can get some work done before that.

Well, she's now 'tarpless' let the detail work begin.

Less than 2 months to our proposed date....time for a pulse check.....who's still in?

Spread the word, and let's start the season off right!

Good News - The snow has finally melted around the trailer.

Bad News - Flooded basement. 5-6 inches. What a holy mess.

Will be pulling the tarp this weekend. Hope to be doing weekend day splashes by May 1, maybe earlier if I nix some of the items on the to do list.

I am still in.

newt posted 04-07-2005 12:08 PM ET (US)     Profile for newt  Send Email to newt
My tarp has been off for a week - let the projects begin! I'm definitely up for the rendezvous but have a wedding to attend first or second weekend in June. Also, the mackerel will be running at that time, and I will need to devote one weekend to stocking the freezer with bait. Did we definitely nail it down as 6/4, or are we flexible?

How about Memorial Weekend? I know we usually talk ourselves out of holiday weekends, but it can't be all that crowded on the water that early, and having three days makes it easy to devote one to a boating day.

I will be getting in town on Saturday the 11th late in the day. If anyone wants to do an un-official get together on the 12th (Sunday) I would love to meet up with some of you guys again. Can't wait to do some striper fishing!

I was drifting through the rendezvous section and noticed you're from Dover, curiosity got the best of me, and funny thing, we both stay at Georges.

I don't keep the whaler there and I don't think we've said much more than a hello to each other, but you have met my buddy who has the same boat as you, almost identical. He also just bought the 25 that's been there for a while too.

Lots of changes there this year, lots of new people coming and old people leaving. Talk of another 16 slips going in too. I won't be there this year; just got a mooring in Hampton area 1....should be a great year.

Maybe I can meet up with everyone on the 4th, sounds like a lot of fun.

Still in for the 4th.

Took off the tarp today. Wow, forgot what she looked like without it on LOL.

Was ambitious and installed the new, longer tongue. The drilling of the new coupler bolts was easier than expected.

With the added 2' 8" of length, I will no longer risk frying my trailer wiring on my 4 Runner (still have to get that fixed). It looks really long at first sight but then it was too short to begin with. I will post a photo soon.

The best part was I fired her up. Wow, 2nd turn and she went like she was run yesterday (not last November) Hmm, love that smell of 2 stroke oil.

Have lots to do to get ready to see you all.

newt, Memorial Day weekend is no good for me. My boys' soccer team is playing in a tournament in Danvers.

I took the winter tarp off today and put on the regular cover. I moved the boat from it's winter location in the backyard to its spring location on the side of the driveway. I still want to splash it in the Merrimack on 4/23, but that may have to wait. I'll move it to Ferry Landing on May 15th.

June 4 in Dover should be OK although I need to check the boys' baseball schedule.

Originally I had a golf tournament scheduled for the 4th and 5th. Not sure that I could do it here's what happened. We had a meeting of the tournament committee a few days ago and since I'm running the tournament I was able to reschedule the tournament for the 11th and 12th. How's that for Whaler dedication? We're looking forward to meet everybody again at Fox Point.
Phil...will you be putting in again at Eliot? If so, I can meet you and we can run into the bay together.
Took the Mills cover off the boat today and pulled it out of the barn. It's ready for some wax and be launched into Lake Winnisquam for the season. Just a little more ice has to leave the lake and we will be off and running.
Let's have a good turn out for the first rendezvous of the season.

Hello fellow New Englanders-I finally posted a few pics from the sea-trial to give you an idea of what I am working with. I have not figured out how to make it a direct link, but the link works if copied and pasted:

I am waiting for my BoatUS packages to come, but in the meantime, I was wondering what the preferred launch sites were on the Merrimack as far as dock space, parking, expense, security, etc. Thanks in advance.

newt posted 04-25-2005 01:15 PM ET (US)     Profile for newt  Send Email to newt

There are three public ramps that I know of on the Merrimack.

1. Cashman's park. Two lanes wide, just upriver of the Route 1 bridge on the south side of the river, cost is $5. This is probably your best bet, but beware of long wait times later in the afternoon.

2. Town ramp on the south side of the river between Newburyport and Plum island. This ramp is inaccessable at low tide, and parking is almost non-existant. I think you could rule this one out.

3. Salsbury beach reservation. Not sure of the cost - it's been a while since I used this ramp. I think there are three lanes total, and the ramp is nice. It's located near the mouth of the river on the North side. To get to the ramp, you follow the road down to Salsbury beach, and take a right at the end. Follow that road into the reservation. Traffic can sometimes be a pain.

Forum member GF launches at Ferry Landing Marina (upriver from Cashman's), so he could fill you in on the cost for that ramp.

I usually launch at Amesbury's town ramp, since it is free for residents, and the closest to my house. Let me know when you get the boat in the water, I can show you around some. If I don't splash by this next weekend, it will be the following weekend.

Here's your link:

Forgot to mention that down river from the Rt 1 bridge on the south side is the town dock (Newburyport). It cost's $1/hour to tie up and you can walk up to the square for food and drink.

Great information Newt, thank you. I will definately take you up on your offer for a quick show of the area at some time, but I have two weddings (one on Lake Champlain and I am taking the boat) and my sister-in-law's baby shower in the Month of May, so June 4th may be my first saltwater splash of the year. Maybe I can follow you guys up the coast for the Spring Rendezvous, but I hope to get into the Merrimack the weekend of the 14th or 21st for a test run, and to plot the appropriate bouys.
gf posted 04-25-2005 02:32 PM ET (US)     Profile for gf  Send Email to gf

Tate, I'm pretty sure that Ferry Landing in Newburyport no longer permits individuals to use their ramp. It's for seasonal land storage customers only.

The Cashman Park and Salisbury Beach ramps are the best in the area but both fill up quickly on summer weekeends. If you are there before 9:00 AM, however, you are probably OK.

Other ramps to consider include:

Rye Harbor State Park -

Eliot, Maine boat ramp - Off Route 103

Great Bay Marine in Newington -

Hopefully, we'll get some decent weather. Who can believe that this will be the 4th weekend washout in a row...

Brian, I've waved to you the few times that you have gone by in your boat this week. I'm a little jealous, to say the least, but I've focused on getting the moorings and the wharf in this week. Given the really really stinky weather, I would like to make a motion that all whalers do not have to be "at their best" due to mitigating weather circumstances.

My boat looked like a dog when I was at the gatherings last year(Rye, Merrimack, Big Lake) I was up against Nate's pristine Montauk, Pete' (NH Katama) totally restored Katama. Then there is Bob Digamen's 1984 Montauk, John O's Newtauk and Hobie. The list goes ON AND ON!

Would anybody like to second the motion? Please? Revisiting the photos has got me in a fright!

The drive to show up on June 4th in NH is the mark of a true Whalernut....shimmering hulls are nice, but a distant second criteria.

Motion hereby ratified! Beautification has been on the bottom of the list this year in favor of functionality. But Brian, your vote doesn't count since your Outrage is already near perfect and will put the rest of us to shame.

I got out yesterday for my "shakedown" cruise and ended up staying out for 7 hours! This Revenge makes an awesum fishing platform with the rear seat removed. Too bad all we caught were a couple of the smallest stripers I have ever seen!

Well I finally splashed the boat yesterday, and managed to only break one thing (plastic transducer arms while testing speed at WOT heading against outgoing tide). We launched at Cashman's around 11 AM and spent about 4+ hours on the river getting acquainted with the boat and gear. It was a bit chilly with a front moving in, but this kept Cashman's very quiet, which was nice for my first day there. WOW, I needed a day like that, and now feel ready for the big stripers to come pay a visit.

What time does the rendezvous begin on the forth, and generally how long do folks tend to stay? I have a committment to bring my Merrimack mentor and his wife fishing on the forth, but would also like to attend at Fox Point. I will check the tide charts, and hopefully it will work out that the favorable fishing tides are before the rendezvous, and we can make the run up to Portsmouth after filling our fish box. Well, even though is seems to rain whenever I am not at work, now that the boat has been deemed seaworthy, will pass inspection, and "knock on wood," is running like a top, I have to say, "Life is Good."

Last year most everyones significant other attended with everyone if I remember correctly, so tell her to come along!

Yes, tell her to come by all means. My wife will be there along with others.

10 a.m. is great for me.

I will be at the Eliot ramp [i]early[i], say 8:30 a.m. to get a parking spot (White 4 Runner, ME plates, Royal trailer with Stoltz guides.

I will loiter and monitor 16. If you want my cell, email me (profile)

When hailing on 16 I use forum names since I don't know everyone's boat names. It's easier. My forum name was ISLANDER.

If anyone needs directions to the Eliot ramp or wants to meet up, email me.

Vin - See you there I presume.

P.S. After 6 weekends in a row of rain then 12 days of rain, 4 days of storm warnings (45kts +) and 3 days of gale warnings, I will show up [i]regardless[i] of the weather and enjoy myself!

Phil....I have your cell number. I'll try to get there around the same time. I'll monitor 16 in the truck and in the boat. If you need to, call the boat "Sea Otter II." So far the weather looks good.....forecasting temps around 80 degrees. Hope the wx forecast holds. Looking forward to meeting you there. I assume you are all set with the directions.

10:00 on 6/4 sounds great!

High tide is at 11:45.

Maine Pep (Al) do you think your boat will be in on time? Your Outrage looks terrific, but I'd prefer to see it in the water.......

My first mate (son Matthew, age 9) will be with me....and of course, ladies are always welcome.

Newt: is your daughter coming with you?

Is everyone packing a cooler and planning to 'do lunch' on Great Bay?

I anchored out there this past weekend, and I think you'll all find the spot to be scenic, quiet, and quite suprising. Many locals don't even know how beautiful and expansive Great Bay is........

And now, for the sunshine, someone much more religious than I needs to appeal to the big weatherman upstairs for a break!

I'm not sure how many will be with me on Saturday. I may have the wife and kids drive up to Newington and I can pick them up at that park off of the Spaulding (can't remember the name). I will be bringing a cooler with beverages and food.

Brian, is there a spot up there to beach the boats, or are we just going to raft up? It would be fun to bring along a grill and cook lunch and let the kids run around. My son is at that age where he can't sit still.

So who is coming up from the South? It sounds like:

Hobie, Tate, myself, and gf? from the Merrimack area, and JohnO and Cast-n-over from Gloucester?

Should we meet up at the Merrimack River Bouy at 8:45 am?

Looking forward to this weekend so that I can meet everyone and experience some sunshine as well...

Newt, the park is called Hilton Park. Take the first exit (northbound) after the bridge. I'm not sure if they have the float in this year at Hilton Park. I don't think that they had one last year. I also don't know of any beaches close by except the one near the Eliot launch site.

Brian, I hope to put my Outrage in on Thursday so that I can have some time to get some time on her before Saturday. I've gotten it cleaned up and the main motor running but the kicker has a problem. With all of the rain, I haven't had the chance to paint the bottom so I will launch and then pull it out next week to do so.

My wife will tag along. Thanks for everyone responding so that she will feel comfortable. This is our first event and we're looking forward to it.

As of today the dock was NOT in at Hilton Park. It is too rocky ans shallow to beach anything but a small aluminum boat. I happened to stop there today on my way back from Mass. It may be better for you folks to meet at Rye or Eliot. See ya on Sat.

To the Merrimack Crowd...........what time do you expect to be in Portsmouth? I could meet you down by the restaurant decks at a set time, and we can all cruise up the Piscataqua together and meet the others at Fox Point.

Nothing too tricky to navigate on the incoming tide, but be very mindful of the 'headway speed' signs under the bridges. The Marine Police love to hide out there!

Weather is looking good.....keep 'em crossed.

newt posted 06-02-2005 07:34 AM ET (US)     Profile for newt  Send Email to newt
Brian, I would guess that we would hit the 2KR bouy at around 9:30 at the mouth of the Piscataqua. I haven't been in that river for a few years, but doesn't it take 15-20 minutes to get up river to Portsmouth?

So far, it's only JohnO and myself confirmed from the Merrimack, but Hobie and Tate are possibilities, and gf is a distant possibility.

Tate, I did not get your email - can you resend?

I guess I will rule out picking up the family at Hilton Park since they don't have a dock. Maybe I'll pick them up at the Shoals Marine Lab Dock (Next to the Steamship Authority dock).

Officially confirming our attendence at the rendezvous. Things have worked out nicely on our end with some recent shuffling of committments, so my wife and I will meet Newt and JohnO at the Merrimack at 8:45 and we can hardly wait. Looking foward to an enjoyable day meeting members, their families and their boats.

Oh well, First Mate Matthew and I will cast off soon, local conditions are exquisite!

I had a great time.

Weather was FANTASTIC.

Brian- You picked a GREAT spot. Good to meet you and your son. Who won the game? I added your photos to my album.

Vin - Good to catch up. See you soon.

Al - Sorry we did not get to chat more.

Matt - Fantastic Outrage, glad you are in the group.

Hobie- What can I say, always good to hang with a power buddy.
Fix that tach?

Nate - Just remember I do it cause I like you and John was not there to get the abuse!

Here are a couple of shots in the SEACOAST 05 album. Brian took the best ones.Thank dude!

If you want me to add photos to my album, just email me.

P.S. Got a bit too much sun. The sticky residue of salt, lotion and 2 stroke smoke is a great feeling. Back to daycare dad!

Jan & I had a great time as well. It was good to see everyone and enjoyed talking "whaler" as well as telling stories about our families.

I maybe should have moved around more and taken a "stroll" to the other side so that I could talk to everyone on their boats. Sorry for not doing that Tate & Amy. Next time I'll make sure that I do.

Seeing all of the nice boats that everyone has put more incentive into me to get my wood taken care of soon but then again, sometimes you need to put that aside so that you can enjoy the boat.

That was a good time. Weather was nice, trip was flawless, Phil didn't give me tooooo much crap, and Matt (tate) didn't yell at Jeff and myself for showing up 1/2 hour late!

It was about 75 miles round trip averaging 2 mpg from my smokey Johnson. I do love that smell!

Here are a few shots from the digital camera. I'll post the rest after I get film developed.

This is one that my daughter took. She wanted to document the nice weather.

Thanks for a great time, Amy and I had a wonderful time with the group. Thanks for all the great pics taken, I will post ours very soon. Judging by some of the pictures taken of our outrage, it seems I may need to spend a bit more time restoring my mid-section, looks as if I have been taking on excess something all winter. Hope to see you all out on the water this summer.

Argh, a beautiful day and I was unable to make it! House projects (It's for sale, anybody looking for a house in the Newburyport area?) and other family commitments kept me wrapped up for the day.

If you guys get together later in the summer, keep me posted.

newt, we're bound to hook up on the Merrimack one of these days!

Hi All:
Great day last Saturday. Nice to see old Whaler friends and meet new ones.

Phil: Fixed the tach, the pulse setting "pot" must have had some crud buildup, and needed to have some contact cleaner applied. Works like a charm now.

Newt: Thanks for your help with the gas dock stuff.

Gotta work on my diet, those cameras are brutal :-).

Thanks to everyone for a wonderful day.

Phil, My daughter was quite impressed with your good looks - she took 5 pictures of you and only one of me!

Hobie, thanks for the help loading up when we got back. I look forward to seeing you out on the water more.

JohnO, How about St Peters Fiesta at the end of this month? Maybe a bunch of us could get together for that.

The festival is a great take. I will be on vacation and on the water! Sunday is out for me as it is a big family day here, but Sat would work. A lot of boat activity, but if you do not mind the slow go it is well worth it.

?? brass flaring tool in NE ??

This is a bit off topic, but I read in some old posts that JohnO may have a flaring tool while researching replacing drain tubes. I noticed on Sunday that some bottom paint had chipped off in front of the bow locker drain tube, and upon closer inspection I was able to easily remove 1.5 inches of corroded brass tubing. I have removed the top end of the 4 inch tube and the foam is now adequately dry, and I have received the replacement tube from twin cities marine with o-rings. I was curious if the tool happened to still be in New England, and if so, could I could borrow the tool before I go ahead and use the ball-pin hammer method. If not, any idea where to purchase this tool... or purchase the parts to make this simple contraption? I would be willing to drive to pick it up and drop off/pay for shipping. Thank you for your input.

Still thinking about Glouster trip, sounds interesting.

Tate posted 06-10-2005 06:51 PM ET (US)     Profile for Tate
John has informed me that the tool has vanished into the internet, but I commend him on having been so trusting. Sorry about the loss John.

Tate -

Post a thread on borrowing the flaring tool in the repairs thread.

I recall John's lending service going bust There was another forum member getting a tool and lending it out. You may want to do a search too.
