Bob Can you camp over night at a beach in your area? I did a quick search of boating camp site and it pushed me south of Marco Island. Mike |

mmakka, i live in naples too. the only beach near here that we could camp on is key weedin, do you know where that is bob? it would be busy in the day but there is very few that camp there. there are no bathrooms due to it being an island. but there is good fishing i rockery bay about 10 minutes from there. the only other place to camp on a beach would probably be the 100000 islands but i dont really like that idea because the bugs are bad there and it is very shalow water and you wake up in the morning and you boat could be totaly out of the water, if its low tide. i was camping down there a few weeks ago and i didnt like it due to these tides. |

Kice Island I think is just south of Marco Island. If you look on a Florida road map follow the last road on the west coast all the down and that's where we put in at. There is a marina in Goodland? that we parked at overnight and had about a 20 minute run to the island. Chris |

posted 03-02-2005 07:28 PM ET (US)
guys, the problem with cayo costa is that the docks (the very few they have) are on the inside of the island in a bay which is nice but the cabins and camp grounds are on the beach side of the island. it is about 3/4 to a mile across the island. yes, they do have a tractor with a trailer that runs across the island but it only runs a few times a day and they do not allow you to take gear, for camping or anything, on this trailer. I have camped at cayo costa before and i didn't like it at all. Evan |

We have camped at Cayo Costa twice, most recently was two months ago. You can put all the gear you want on the wagons. We had 4 bikes, two tents, two ice chests, four duffle bags, and other gear on the wagons. The bad thing about Cayo Costa is that Hurricane Charlie (?) took out a lot of a trees so the sites are rather exposed. And there is no hot water. Jimmy Carter came to visit the island while we were there! |

stefan, i love the rod and gun club it is probably one of my favorite places in florida. But, in the summer that is probably the WORST place to stay due to bugs the bugs there a crazy there are so many of them. On the other hand if we were to go in the "winter" i would love to go. Evan |

How about a few hotel rooms at the Inlet Hotel at Boca Grande (on Gasparilla Island)?. Big efficiency rooms with kitchens for $145 plus another $20 to tie up your boat at their docks which are right next to the hotel rooms. Bar-be-que pits outside for the fish that you might catch that day. 5 miles from Cayo Costa. |

What about, for us non campers,Pine Island, Bokelia or what is left of it, use to be some hotels up there and some condos that you could rent. An Up date on Bokielia would be nice. What about St. James City on the south of Pine Islanda there are hotels there. I used to own property in Bokelia and it was great fishing and easy access to Cayo Costa, Cabage Key etc. |

How about Lover's Key area and Estero River / Koreshan sate park? Non Camper can stay at Hotels at Lovers Key / Fort Myers beach and Campers at Koreshan... Lover's Key has some great beaches on the Gulf and somewhat protected on the north side of the Key on Big Carlos pass. Also there are a few nice waterfront restaurants. Lover's Key info: Here is a really nice map of the area (link to a PDF download). I was at Lover's Key last weekend talking to a nice guy Tim and his wife/girlfriend Suzie, they have a classic 13 Whaler. I told him about these forums. Howdy Group . . . David here (Spouse Lucy). We helped with the last Kice Island trip and had a blast. No-see-ums appreciated our visit but what the heck, they have to eat too. It was our first trip with the group. Nice people and good food. fast forward>>>>> Charlie hit, Port Charlotte home destroyed, computer trashed, relocated to Olga, ready to camp and cruisae. Still own the same old 1973 Montauk with the trusty 115HP Johnson. We have camped on most of the places previously mentioned (sea-kayak and Whaler) and would love to go again. David |

Good Morning Mike, Thank you for the kind Apre' Charley thoughts-- Itwas a bitch, hiding in our Sub. inside our garage as the entire roof blew off . . . Man-O-man! Your Revenge is incredible! Have you guys spent the night aboard? I don't know if you rember but Lucy and I reaslly want a boat, just like yours. We love the Montauk but yours really is a Mangrove Mansion. My BIG fantasy: anchored out, under a full moon, cold Florida night, SS charcoal grill on the fantail rail, steaks grilling, no mosquitoes (must be winter), nice glass of Merlot lovely Lucy sitting next to me and lots of "Whaler" friends anchored nearby . . . Ah yes. It would be grand. Regards, David |

The hotel you are thinking of is the Hyatt, it is very nice but kinda pricey http://coconutpoint.hyatt.com/property/index.jhtml The boat ramp at Weeks Fish Camp is $8 a day. That is at the end of Coconut Road just past the Hyatt. I would recomend Lover's Key Resort, right by the free boat ramp. Map: www.greatcalusablueway.com/map/pdf/gcbMap.pdf As far as Gas... Lover's Key Resort has a nice place to eat, but no docks, got to anchor and wade in. We usally go there on weekdays when boat traffic/wake is at minimum, Trail marker #13 (yellow square on the map above). Blue circle #3 on the Map above. Does anyone need local Boat Ramps? I would suggest Lover's Key Ramp (free) at Lover's Key State Park. Just East of Blue circle #7 on the Map above.
