OK, I haven't called yet, but the web site says camping is OK and dock space is available. Not reservable, not slips, it's just a floating dock. We can use it to raft up if necessary (too many boats) Great place for camping, unless we get too far into summer. A good midpoint for trips to the Gulf(South) and the Springs (North) I will volunteer to be a guide for either. Let's crack the daytrip mold (Beercan) and spend some quality time together. By the way, big boats are cool too, this river is BIG !!!

We have had a great time camping at Manatee Springs State Park but unless they have changed the rules recently, they do not allow you to keep your boat at the dock overnight. So you have to haul out every day that you will camp there.

We have also camped upriver on private property.

This kinda sounds interesting. Can you go into what the trip might be like as it seems like you have been there done that!

Our last trip went something like this:

Day 1: Dirve to the Manatee Springs State Park, just west of Chiefland, Florida. Pitch the tent, swim with goggles and fins in the 15' deep, crystal clear spring. Those who have SCUBA gear can venture into the underwater cave. The spring water is about the same year round: chilly. So bring a wet suit if you have one. Then sit around the fire, tell stories, sleep.

Day 2: launch the boat and head up river. The Suwannee is a beautiful river with lots of trees and wildlife. It is not a clear river but the springs that feed it are clear. You can stop at two or three springs on the way up river. Best lunch stop is at Fanning Springs. Then continue up river to Branford, turn around and head back to Manatee River State Park. Put the boat back on the trailer and build a fire, play Pictionary, sleep.

Day 3: launch the boat. Have your loving spouse drive the car and the trailer over to Crystal River while you take the boat there (open water).
Lunch at Cedar Key on the way (if the tide is high). Arrive at the hotel in Crystal River (or Homosassa) and go out for dinner.

Day 4: Drive home.

Depends on when you're thinking of doing this, but I think my husband and I might be interested.

I was in Swannee last April...nice place. Good fishing off and near shore. Can be a tricky place to navigate but its a pretty place. We stayed at a place called Angler's Resort. They have camping (rv type) spots available and a awsome boat dock slips (covered with power) that can be rented for aroun $10 per day. They are located within 3 miles of the gulf near some great flats fishing. I think I still have some numbers in my gps.

Take care,

bc

Name the place and date and we'll be there!
We'll be trailering to Key Largo the week of 4/18 so no good then but almost any other time should be great. Maybe a McRae's type run but with enough hot water for everyone?

I'll start working out the details. If Manatee isn't a good choice there is a hotel on the river in Fanning Springs that we can hopefully not get thrown out of on the first night.

OK, I started working out the details. Manatee is OK, but it's a long walk to the dock, mosquitos, crowds on weekends, How about just upriver in Old Town. It's called the Suwannee Gables resort and marina. (www.suwaneegables.com) They have a dock at the hotel. Ramp also, but if not that good a county ramp is a short drive away. This will be on the lines of Homosassa. Friday and Sat. nights for us and anyone else. I will also lead some tours of the river as well. There will be springs, parks, gators, waterskiing, fishing, a trip down river to the Gulf. There are a couple of bars(sand and the other type) on the river too. Gas is available, but not on the river itself. You can plan on 50-100 miles of boating each day.

Howz about Friday evening, April 22 and Saturday the 23rd and close up on Sunday the 24th?

Good on you Frank for suggesting the Suwannee River

I'm looking at it and 2 whalers in the boathouse right now.

The little town of Suwannee - at the mouth & into the Gulf - is as nice as previously mentioned.
The motel here has floating docks and - as mentioned - Anglers Resort has slips and accomodations.
Welcome to my backyard. I could help with arrangements.

Manatee Springs is 20 +/- miles up the big river.

The Gulf is 5 minutes.

Donel,

Its been a year so bare with me...Do you live in the house next to the main river body. From Anglers resort...down the canal, turn left (right is back way to salt creek) down a little ways turn right, is your place the one on the right/corner as you head out to the main channel? Also do you know Larry, a guide with a 24 proline named Mary Anne..I think. Larry took us out fishing for Sheep Head. Also I met Capt. Howard here in Knoxville two years ago at the boat/fishing show.

Take care,

bc

Don't really care when it is but if the springs are 72 degrees, I would like it to be pretty warm outside to justify taking the plunge.

Hi bc
I've seen the Mary Anne but don't know Capt. Larry, ol' Capt Howard & the Lucky Lady have been a fixture here forever.

Yeah, I'm on that corner of Demory Creek & the Suwannee River. Not many old whalers here but newer ones are showing up more often.

By late April through May the pelagics show up in quantity near shore - ( 6- 10 miles ). Nice scenic ride for non -fishermen & women.

Guarantee you a tarpon hookup come July - a 2 mile whaler ride away.

Whatever Frank plans, I'm in.

Don,

I sent you a email...what types of fish might one expect in the later part of April. If you don't mind, reply to the email with the answer...so we don't get this thread off topic too far. Thanks again.

Hi there, I'm still working up in NH. I kinda let the Suwanee trip go by the wayside as May is busy with the two Whaler events already. Maybe for late June. How does that sound to everyone. Besides, the river is flooded right now.
