I may or may not be able to take the Whaler but the wife would like to take a house boat vacation. Any advice on a good area to take the family for a week on a rented house boat would be appreciated. Hopefully it would be about a days drive from the Philadelphia area.

Try Forever Resorts or Seven Crown Houseboats, on the web. See if they have a facility in your area. They are all over the country. We have a lot of house boat rentals on Lake Mead and Lake Powell and many renters bring their own boat for a tender. Once you find the right cove and get tied down, its nice to have a smaller boat to run around in.
Good Luck,
Gary

You're less than two hours from Chesapeake Bay.

A dive club I belong to has done several houseboat rentals.
I bring the Montauk and some years we've had another boat too.
It's really handy to have another boat to run to the marina
for ice, beer, ice cream, or a late arrival. And we waterski,
tube, and other stuff.

Cumberland Lake, Kentucky looks nice. Haven't been there, but it's had a lot of TV coverage.

They rent houseboats/canalboats to transverse the Erie Canal. Lots of locks and looks like it might be fun.

Check out www.canals.state.ny.us for more info. See the Excursions and Vacations page, then boats for hire.

Raystown would be the closest that I know of that has rental houseboats. Probably a 2 hour drive from Philadelphia. Whereever you go take the Whaler!
