We've tried before and it hasn't worked out. How about this year. Sometime in August?

Some location ideas north to south:

Tices Shoal in Barnegat Bay
LBI somewhere?
Atlantic City area somewhere?
Corson's Inlet State Park (south end Ocean City)
Hereford Inlet/Nummy Island

I was there last year :)

Yeah Nick, I know. Sorry I couldn't make it last year due to a sick family member. Can't speak for anyone else though. Do you have any plans to be in Jersey this year? I've got plenty of room on the new Outrage.

Jeff..

I'd like to attend; I would Love Tices or points north.

ill try to attend...just had shoulder surgery today and will be out of commission for about 8 weeks. My vote would be for Corsons or LBI... enjoy both places.
SpeedBump posted 05-18-2005 08:59 PM ET (US)     Profile for SpeedBump  Send Email to SpeedBump
Well I made the first one pretty much alone, missed the second one when Biggie, I mean Nick, was pretty much alone, three could be the charmer.

Lets see no trips planned to Maine this year, traveling anywhere farther than the shore is out of the question due to gas prices... Sure, any weekend and I guess most any sunny day with a little notice.

SpeedBump posted 05-18-2005 09:03 PM ET (US)     Profile for SpeedBump  Send Email to SpeedBump
I would prefer Barnegat Bay or along LBI.

Tices Shoal sounds like as close to a consensus as we'll ever get?

blacklab posted 05-19-2005 05:09 PM ET (US)     Profile for blacklab  Send Email to blacklab
My vote would be for Corson's Inlet near Ocean City.
devildog posted 05-22-2005 10:07 PM ET (US)     Profile for devildog  Send Email to devildog
I'm game for Corson's almost any weekend. We go there all the time. I'm up for Tice's with more notice. We could have a shoobie rendezvous at Corson's Inlet and a benny rendezvous at Tices Shoal. :)

Sal,
Corson's Inlet State Park is at the south end of Ocean City. It's a popular beaching spot with a good dockside bar & restaurant at the Deauville Inn in nearby Strathmere. It would be nice and close for me and other Cape May County boaters but quite a hike for those coming from LBI & north. I'm also game for a good cruise up to Tice's Shoal.
Sal A posted 05-25-2005 08:19 PM ET (US)     Profile for Sal A  Send Email to Sal A
How long a hike might that be from , say, the Seaside Heights bridge (rt 37)? Regardless...I'd like to meet iy and the others this summer...

Sal

I think it might be about two hours from Barnegat Inlet to Corson's Inlet but I'm really not sure.
SpeedBump posted 05-30-2005 06:09 PM ET (US)     Profile for SpeedBump  Send Email to SpeedBump
I was wondering about the travel time by boat also. I regularly travel from Barnegat to southern LBI doing the ICW, it take me @ 50 minutes from Forked River to Holgate, way to many "no wake zones". The Trip to Corsons may take close to three hours unless you going outside for the trip. I have to plot it out on my map source chart for GPS as I may be heading to ocean city the third week of JUne. I should get rough idea as to how long the trip will take.

SpeedBump,
Are you going to O.C. by car or by boat?

Jeff

Larry posted 06-01-2005 10:24 AM ET (US)     Profile for Larry  Send Email to Larry
Is there a date set yet. I'll be bringig my Rage by car so need a ramp recommendation.
SpeedBump posted 06-01-2005 08:58 PM ET (US)     Profile for SpeedBump  Send Email to SpeedBump
I would like to go by boat. I haven't done it in years and the last time was by sail. It was a nice cruise down out of Barnegat and back in at Corsons if I recall correctly. It was during the week of the fouth of July. Coming back left OC @ 8:00 am w/o adequate beverages or should I say the proper type of beverages, we ran out quickly and had only one sudsy one left in the cooler that got stared down by four very thirsty people, it stayed in the cooler till we were able to reload the box.

The winds died w/in a half hour of leaving not a puff to be had and I had to motor back to Forked River using a 7.5 OB on the transom. Not what I would classify as a banner day of sailing. That trip took 6+ hours. Chose to go into little egg inlet just to get a fresh case of beverages at the Ketch next to Morrisons in Beachhaven before continuing the trip home.

Any way, I am spending @ 4 - 5 days in Avalon w/ friends and will either drag the whaler by trailer or by cruise by water, haven't decided yet still have to sit down w/ my GPS and Charts and figure out a route and approximate time by boat.

JL8Jeff posted 06-02-2005 11:14 AM ET (US)     Profile for JL8Jeff  Send Email to JL8Jeff
Ahhh, the Ketch! Beach Haven isn't nearly as much fun as it used to be. It's way too family oriented now. I've never taken my Rage down to the beach though, it's a fresh water boat and I don't trust my trailer at the moment to go that far. Where is Tice's shoal?
sraab928 posted 06-02-2005 04:03 PM ET (US)     Profile for sraab928  Send Email to sraab928
About 4 years ago I took the trip from Manahawkin (Route 72 Bridge) to Ocean City (17th st.) via the intercoastal waterway. I was in Searay 240 at the time. There are a lot of no wake zones between those two destinations. Trip took about three hours and if I remember correctly low tides and shallow water did give me problems along the way. Corsons would add another 15-20 minutes or so.

I hope this helps
Scott

SpeedBump posted 06-02-2005 09:30 PM ET (US)     Profile for SpeedBump  Send Email to SpeedBump
Scott - I figured it may take 3+ hours. I am not too concerned about low tides. Never really have a problem with them in the Nauset, the No Wake Zones are another story, they can really add some significant time to the trip.

JL8Jeff- Tices is in the middle of Barnegat Bay along the west side of Island Beach State Park. It's about due east of Forked River and the BB bouy in the bay. A a 12-15 minute cruise by boat from the entrance to Forked River. It is a great anchorage, well protected and a real haven for boaters in the summer. Do a google search, lots of info there about Tices shoal.

Tices Shoal looks like a great spot. Jeff, it would be great to see another Rage there.

I am taking a week off the last week of July from work. Maybe the second to last, or the last, Saturday in July? Sunday possibly also. I can definitely do during the week as well, but perhaps you guys are working.... I'd also like to call Pete Reils (from OBM Lanoka). I don't know if he lurks here anymore...but a good guy...

I'm away on vacation July 16-23, but anytime later would try to make an appearance in our new Ventura. Running out of OBM in Lanoka Harbor, almost too convenient is Tices...

I am taking this coming week off, and I will be on the water quite a bit, I think. I also am taking off the last week of July (week of 23rd). I'm game. I monitor 68, and will be actively listning for Full Circle among others. Hail me (Sal A or the Mary Alice).

Anybody on the Mullica this weekend

How does Saturday July 23rd look for a Tices Rendevous with a run down to Barnegat light? If that date isn't good perhaps two weeks later on August 6th.
devildog posted 07-06-2005 09:45 AM ET (US)     Profile for devildog  Send Email to devildog
I didn't really see myself as "host". Just a conversation starter.

July 23d is Ocean City's Night in Venice parade.

If my Mercury isn't back in action soon, I won't be going to Night in Venice, Tices Shoal or anywhare else on the water anytime soon.

It seems like it may be more practical for the Cape/Atlantic region guys to rendezvous at Corson's Inlet and those from LBI & North to meet at Tice's.

Anyone up for Corson's on August 6?

Jeff

Any "whos" or "whens" for Tices?
SpeedBump posted 07-08-2005 01:14 PM ET (US)     Profile for SpeedBump  Send Email to SpeedBump
Saturday, August 6 should be the Forked River Night Of Lights, similar to the OC Night in Venice event. As noted in an earlier post Forked River is a few miles west directly across from Tices shoal and could be a good parting spot in the evening for those that don't mind night boating.
Larry posted 07-08-2005 01:39 PM ET (US)     Profile for Larry  Send Email to Larry
Sounds good to me. Any other whos out there?
Where would a good ramp be that we can use to retrieve at night?
SpeedBump posted 07-21-2005 09:10 PM ET (US)     Profile for SpeedBump  Send Email to SpeedBump
There is a free gravel ramp on lakeside drive just east of route 9 in forked river. puts you on the south west side of the river @ 3/4 of the way up from the bay.

There is a nice paved ramp in the little town of Barnegat south west of the BI bouy in the bay, this is below barnegat inlet and even further from tices shoal

I understand that Ocean beach marine in Bayville / Lanoka Harbour(?) is very whaler friendly and I think they have a ramp. There are several marina's on forked river proper that have ramps at a nominal charge.

You guys planning a Tices shoal trip?
SpeedBump posted 07-26-2005 09:16 PM ET (US)     Profile for SpeedBump  Send Email to SpeedBump
I'll be down in the area from August 5th through the 15th and most weekends thereafter. I am up for a rendezvous but have come to the conclusion that those with whalers in this part of New Jersey are hard pressed to give up a good fishing weekend, the bay is just starting to turn on with Fluke and weakfish and the past few weeks have been excellent for BFT offshore at the ridge. It may be tough to get a group together but I'm game, just pick a date and time and I'll most likely be there.

Aug 6th for Tices Shoal is a go, all are most welcome.
Who is planning to be there?
SpeedBump posted 07-31-2005 10:26 PM ET (US)     Profile for SpeedBump  Send Email to SpeedBump
Is this latest attempt for another S. Jersey rendevous going to the crabs again? I can't believe it.

If a lot of whalers show up perhaps we can help Sal sell his 19 Nantucket. There is a nice sandbar just south of the boardwalk landing in Tices. We could gather there after a morning of fishing, what say you guys it is six days away.

I will be there speedbump. what time are you guys getting it on?
SpeedBump posted 08-01-2005 11:18 AM ET (US)     Profile for SpeedBump  Send Email to SpeedBump
I would like to get some weak and fluke fishing in in the morning so I was thinking maybe 11:00 or so. Actually anytime is good for me though as I am only minutes away in Forked River. Depending on how many show up I'll adjust my time there, it should be fun hob-nobbing with others about Whalers.
looking forward to meeting you-
Graham

Oh yeah.. forgot to mention. I got there with my son Billy about 20 minutes before Graham. I saw a few Reebok era Whalers.... motored over...smiled and waved. They looked at me like a geek who had three heads. I guess not everyone lurks at CW. LOL!

Just returned from a week on the bay that started out with the small but fun rendezvous at Tices shoal. It was great to meet Sal A and Billy, Larry and Robin, all very nice people.

I must say that if anyone is looking to upgrade from their classic to a 19 Nantucket Sal's is definetly one to look at. A beautiful boat with lots of ammenities like the bow dodger and Sun top, GPS, VHF etc.. This boat looks to be in new condition and would be worth every penny he is asking for it.

I say this not because of the kind words about my classic or the 2 stroke oil he parted with but it really is a knock out kind of boat. Clearly a well cared for boat by someone who has a great pride of ownership.

Larry and Robin were great sports to venture out in the freshly power packed rage. A very cool little boat with incredible amounts of storage, probably more storage than SQ' for people. They couldn't have picked a better bay day as the bay chop was at a minimum all day making their passage an easy one. Most of the week was like that also, virtually flat bay conditions until this past saturday when the southerly pump began. And what great people to put up with my sister and extended family that showed up in their large, lumbering, non whaler type boat.

For those that couldn't make it, we missed you. Hopefully if we do this again more people from South Jersey will participate. It is curious with all the Whalers in tices that day so few apparently know of the Continuous wave site or of the rendezvous, I consider it their loss.
