Since the Piscatisqua trip early this summer was fun and the Lake Win trip fizzled, anyone up for a Fall Piscatisqua OR Merrimack River gathering ?
Winter is long so I need this to help get me through all the damn snow and cold.
I am thinking last weekend of September/1st weekend of October. (works for ME!)
Brian - Will you be in NH or down to Annapolis ? Any good suggestions ?
John O - you got your truck so you can't skip this one. Grab Frank to keep you company coming up.
Nate - Any ideas for Merrimack River ?

I'd like to make a Merrimack trip, haven't been there in a long time.
Do you guys launch at the ramp in Newberryport? Thats the only one I know of

Phil / All......
Should be in NH both weekends, only question is will my first mate Matthew be available!?!?!?
Let's make it happen....happy to help coordinate logistics.

I'm always up for a Merrimack trip! Sunday 10/2/05 I'll be at the Sox-Yankees game, but that Saturday is clear.
If the foliage has turned by then, it is a nice ride up the river. The channel is marked for about 15 miles up from the mouth to Haverhill. There should also be plenty of room at the town dock if we wanted to do lunch in newburyport somewhere.
Ryan, your best bet would be to launch at Cashman's park for $5. It's a nice ramp and the wait time should be minimal at that time of year.

Anyone else intersted in 10/3?
How about John O?
I've blew off two or three of there get-togethers so far, I'd like to finally get in on one.
Am I the only one whos boat lives on a trailer, or are you guys launching too?
posted 08-31-2005 09:40 PM ET (US)
I will email the guys off line to get them to respond.
Brian - If we do Merrimack, will you come down?
Ryan - I trailer 100 %

Phil - I'm in....and I'd be cruising down, not trailering.
You're welcome to cruise along if you'd rather not trailer..

10/3 is a Monday. How about Saturday, 10/1/05?
Phil, I think you will have to email JohnO - I don't think the forum is the place to contact him anymore. LOL.

Everone sounds enthusiastic about this event. Let's pick a time and launch site. The weather has always been with us so hopefully it will be again. So.......LET'S RENDEZVOUS!

I don't know Newburyport very well. My only experience up their is my dad owns a few rental condos on Woodman way (sp), which it like right off the highway.
I've taken a quick ride or two downtown the few times, but that's it.
I don't know the street names or anything, but I did find a launch ramp into the river. It was a wide and steap ramp, fairly new looking with two good sized docks, there was also a little building for someone to sit in and collect the ramp fees, and plenty of trailer parking.
Does the place I'm describing sound familiar to anyone?
posted 09-08-2005 07:47 AM ET (US)
Ryan, sounds like you are describing Cashman's Park - which is the best place for everyone to launch.
posted 09-08-2005 08:18 AM ET (US)
Given that there will be some coming north from Cape Ann and others coming south (Vin, Brian, me) I propose 11 a.m. as a meeting time.
Nate - Where is a good spot for 8 boats to meet?
Brian and Vin - I am strongly considering launching at Eliot and going down with you guys. Will contact both of you off line on details.
posted 09-08-2005 08:45 AM ET (US)
I'll probably launch up river a bit at the Amesbury town ramp, and Hobie (Jeff) keeps his boat up there also, so the two of us will probably motor down together.
I think a good place to meet up is directly across from Cashman's Park on the North side of the river. It's an easy place to anchor up and the fishermen amongst us can toss a line in for schoolies while we wait. Here it is on the chart:
I would still vote for a cruise up the river since I haven't done it yet this year, but with gas prices so high maybe not everyone wants to travel the extra 20-30 miles.
It would also be nice to tie up at the town dock, and have some lunch in town. Michael's or Not-Your-Average-Joe's could accomodate a crowd.

Phil is probably 200 miles into his journey to pick up his new 32' Outrage with trip Verados. I still don't know how he expects to trailer that sucker home with a Toyota 4-runner. Oh well, those Maine-iacs are inovative.
posted 09-10-2005 10:23 PM ET (US)
It would be nice to "cruise" up the river. Newt....What is the name of the boat ramp you indicated on the chart or is it a marina? The wife is a little hesitant on boating down to there from Eliot so we will most likely trailer down to the river. We hope the weather will cooperate with us. So far, all our rendezvous have had great weather. See ya there!

Vin, the ramp is at Cashman's Park. Here is a link to a map. You need the Adobe Acrobat Reader to read it.

Can I get a few boats to volunteer for Coast Guard /Power Squadron Vessel Safety Checks while we are on teh Merrimack cruise? Get yourself one of those free courtesy decals that keep you from being randomly boarded most of teh time. Seriously, I am a vessal safety check officer with Power Squadron, and I need to inspect several more boats this year to meet my quota to keep my certification current. No downside to inspection at all - no reporting if fail, just upside of knowing what you need, (and that decal).
Hope to see you there.

I'll put a bump on this.
As I have mentioned to Phil, I can be on the water around 1:00 PM, maybe 12:30.
High tide in Newburyport is 11:13 AM on the 1st so water will not be a problem.
Any ideas on an itinerary? A cruise up river to downtown Haverhill and back is pleasant. It will be a little too early for Fall foliage but the river will not be crowded.
I will send Phil and Nate my cell phone number and you can let me know where you are.
Of course, you might not want my McKee Craft to crash the party!

Phil (AKA Islander,PTyson and CBOutrage) had earlier suggested 11:00 AM. How does this sound to everyone? A CRUISE (Not a race) to Haverhill sounds like a great idea. How is the Newburyport ramp a low tide?
posted 09-23-2005 01:56 PM ET (US)
Since nobody has objected, I say lets stick with 11:00 am across the River from Cashman's park. Use Channel 9 to hail if anyone is lost. Let's use forum names or "C-Wave" to hail. The meeting spot is visible from Cashman's boat ramp. For those of you headed up from the mouth, go into Newburyport, under the bridge, past all the slips on the right, then past all the moorings on the right, and then there's a fork in the river, and thats the spot.
We can take a cruise up the river, or part way up the river. Maybe on the way up we can stop at this big rock I often see people jumping from, and maybe the crazies and/or young amongst us (Phil, Ryan, Matthew, Myself) will be bold enough to try it out.
vink, you will be fine at the ramp at all tides.
gf, I'm looking forward to seeing you and your Macky as we are on our way back down river. I'm starting to think you are a fictional character, since after three years we still have not met!
For you guys coming in from Eliot, you should be fine thru the mouth on an incoming tide, but if it is snotty, just stay tight to the North Jetty where the deep water is. I may even be out front or up towards Hampton fishing and meet you as you come down. I'm not sure yet.

Nate - What is the run up from the entrance? 20-30 minutes?
Weather looks good so far. Cross your fingers.
posted 09-29-2005 07:53 AM ET (US)
Phil, time from the mouth of the Piscataqua River to the mouth of the Merrimack is completely dependent on weather and your tolerance of pain. Distance is 15 miles (statute) I believe. From the mouth of the Merrimack up to Cashman's is about 20 minutes.

Ahoy...I have fallen out of the loop...
Hey all, sounds like you guys have a beautiful trip planned out, and of all places, it is where I have cut my teeth in Whalerdom (but let me explain why you may see me "there" going the opposite direction).
Phil, thank you for the email, I am sorry I did not reply to the email you sent, things on the home front have become blissfully busy. Yet, pitifully I allowed my ISP to delete it before I had a chance to check it a second time, thereby ereasing my thoughts of returning the reply of "not sure yet".
Fellow New Englanders - Long story longer,
I went from logging on to CW several times daily last spring to nearly not all over the summer. I am now only checking email during the rare and intermittent pauses I have at work. [explaination to follow] The good news is that I had condensed all my free time into the weekends, which had usually involved 2-3 days per week of striper fishing...then the blues (fish). With "knock on wood" everything running well enough on the boat to fish, I figured I would eventually log back on to CW this fall after hunting season to do more research.
I figured I had plenty of time to share some rookie fish stories, including the 46" stubborn striper we caught at the mouth of the river on a live eel with nearly a full moon around midnight. With the always exciting breakers over the back, side, and front of the boat that make you say, "Do not worry, it's a Whaler, she'll bail enough on the way in for the next run," it was fun to see some guests discover the legend of this well crafted boat was indeed true.
Alas, back to my original point of thought and explaination. About four months ago my sister-in-law delivered a healthy baby boy and we experienced an increase in non-whalering activites (she and her husband live in the house next door), and a couple of weeks later my wife informed me that there would soon be THREE new babies on the block.
I figured she must of spotted a couple of stray kittens while she was walking our dog Morgan, but this was not so...Somewhere around this point in the time between fitting in fishing and family time, the computer fell out of favor in our household.
Huhhhssshhwweeww....the other neighbors are also expecting a child, and we are not having twins. We all feel one at a time is enough.
There must be something in the water here!
What I am getting at is I have not been fishing recently, and my wife is finally feeling more well, and I feel the need to spend some time just fishing. Prior to checking CW recently, I had already planned on doing a few hours of fishing with a friend of mine on the 1st. I do hope to see you at least a few of you on your way through to the rendezvous, or at Cashman's. I plan to make a more concerted effort to stay in touch next year on-line and on the water.
By the way Phil, hell of a boat, and I really enjoyed your narrative. Congratz!!! I may also contact you for a few tips on diaper performance, and changing techniques in the near future.
Take care all,

I hear that, Phil, about being up late getting ready.
It kinda snuck up on me, the boat has been sitting for five or six weeks, and I just got around to hauling her into the garage yesterday, then I got busy today. Now I have plans all tomorrow after school and tomorrow night (going to the New England drag way), so I looks like I won't have much time to get the boat looking pretty. No one is allowed to make any comments as to her cleanliness or should I say lack of it, ok? ;-)
I’ve given up on going to the B’s game that night, just pre-season anyway, but now I just found out I get to drive to NJ with my buddy to pick up an ebay car(lucky me), we are leaving late that night. Its going to be a long weekend! I made a deal with him, he comes on the boat Satuerday with me and I'll go with him to NJ Sunday.
I see that John O hasn’t posted, Has anyone heard from him? I don’t have his email, but if he isn’t going because of the hassle of hauling his boat out and moving it, he’s welcome to ride with me and my crew.

My guess is that you could make the game without a problem. Heck, I know I will be home on the couch in plenty of time to watch the sox game.
Tate, congratulations for both the new baby on the way, and also the 46" striper! With some luck, I will be fishing in the morning before our cruise up river and will see you out there.

I'm up the Merrimack from Newburyport in Lowell, though I keep my 17 OutrageI on the Cape. Is this an annual thing you guys do? If so I'd love to join in next year, I could trailer up from the Cape. I haven't explored the North Shore yet, at least not from the water and it would be good to get together with some seasoned vets.

Phil, nice pics, really shows off the river some of us call home. I was able to go out again yesterday and today, what perfect weather.
Pete, that Katama should be in a showroom somewhere, that original blue gel is perfect.
Ryan, you get a bad rap here. I'll take you up on the Boston Harbor guide in the spring. You did good with JB's Montauk, that Suzi is inaudible.
Jeff, nice meeting you.. where do you put in from Salem again?
Nate, good to finally meet you the wife and the little ones...a cuddy and a Whaler, what a perfect combination for the family. See you on the river soon (not a striper to be found in the last three days up river!) Maybe our next trip can be the PI sound...beach up behind Cranes...maybe a trip up to Woodmans?
Glad I stumbled on the thread. Wish I could have gone back out to Newburyport with everyone...where did you end up eating? Black Cow? Joe's? Michael's? The Grog? Thirsty Whale? So many great places in NBPT.

Petes Katama really was the show stopper. She really was in amazing better then showroom condition. No question she is showroom material, and I think the fastest out of the bunch of us, too. I think I'm one of the few of us who got a good look at her on the trailer, not a nick anywhere on the boat, perfect keel and corners all the way around.
I should be out around the Boston harbor islands this weekend, for what may be the last run on the year if anyone wants to join you know where to find me.

Timo, I look forward to seeing you out on the water. I'm sure we have passed by each other more than once over the past few years. PI sound and Cranes are good destinations. We should look for a favorable tide sometime and make a run. Tell me, what is Woodman's?
