Hi West Coasters:

I'm moving a 46' Post in a few weeks up from Capa Coral, FL to Crystal River. I would appreciate some suggestions for transient-friendly marinas possibly near Pass-a-Grille or around Treasure Island. I would also appreciate any tips on fuel depots for the local shrimp fleet.

By the way, is the Hurricane Bar/Restaurant still there in Pass-a-Grille?

I would skip Pass-a-Grille and go to John's Pass for fuel. Pass-a-Grille is still missing aids to nav and gets shallow in some areas. John's pass on the other had is well marked and the fuel dock is long and easy to get to. You'll want to refuel at Don's Dock on the north east side of the pass. John's Pass is right between Treasure Island and Sand Key. John's Pass is marked with "JP" on the entrance marker. Flashes Morse Alpha at night. Bridge tender listens to CHNL 09.

Another Option is Clearwater Pass. You want to refuel at the Clearwater City Marina. The marina is slightly north of the pass. You have to take Clearwater Pass channel to the Clearwater City Marina Channel.

Don't even think about Hurricane Pass.

If you get in a jam, the last relatively easy and safe place to get fuel would be in the Anclote River. Tarpon Springs.

Get charts 11411, 11412, and 11409. These will get you from Eggmont channel to Crystal River. I'm not sure about South of Eggmont.

Pass-a-Grill still hosts the famous Hurricane Bar & Grill. They also have modest motel rooms for reasonable prices. THe shopping is also a nice break. Goos luck!

I just re-read your post and I think the most transient friendly marina would be the Clearwater City Marina. They should have plenty of slips and there are plenty of places to eat on the beach.

Thanks for the info Phat and Janis. Any recollection of the bridge height at John's Pass?

The JP bridge is fairly low, maybe 20 ft of vert clearance. It's a draw bridge though.

Clearwater has about a 80ft vert clearance.

IF you can get to Clearwater, that would be my choice to spend the night. The Clearwater City marina has nice accomodations, fuel, pump out, food, etc...

Phat:
Thanks for the JP bridge height info. I know it will be on the charts and the reason I ask is because it's a pain in the neck to put all the outriggers and antennas down. The Post minimum is around 23' so they need to open the bridge anyway. I'll probably go to Clearwater as you recommend. Maybe we can meet up for a beer or six when I know the schedule.
