Anyone else counting backwards from May 1st yet?

This first 'dusting' of the season is rough..........

Anyway, for sanity's sake, who's up for a February 11th (or thereabouts) 'Halfway to Tarpless' party?

Never too early to plan for ways to shorten winter!

It's proven that goal setting helps people survive tough times, none tougher than when your Whaler is storage!

Who's in?

Spell much?

Errors in the Topic Heading are much more glaring than in the replies, but I'll take the heat......

Where to this year? Should we try to keep it half way between the Mass and NH folks again?

Easy for me to say....but Portsmouth NH is pretty much equidistant between Boston and Portland, easy highway access, nautical history, and multiple dining options.

But, since I'm better at planning these than attending, I am open to resonable suggestions.

Maybe the Muddy River Smokehouse in Portsmouth?

While I missed last year's, I think we all can make this one.
I will defer to you on location since I am not familiar with the area.

Still haven't winterized due to my asinine belief I will get one more day. Yeah Right!

Brian - Hope Annapolis is good for ya.

If we are thinking of the Portsmouth area again this year there is a variety of dining areas to choose from. Check this site out........

Phil/Sybill/CascoBayOutrage -

Glad to hear we're getting some traction for a winter gathering....plenty of places in Portsmouth, depending on the timeframe or culinary preference.

vink is a team player, huh?

JohnO has got to show at some point....

Don't know about everyone's fall, but the heavy rains literally broke my slip off from the main dock as the river swelled, and my baby almost ended up at the Shoals without me.

Let's see who else RSVP's and plan from there...

Phil - been splitting time between Annapolis, NYC, and Dover...gonna do Xmas in Key West, pretending Winter doesn't exist. Annapolis is the nuts, would move there in a nanosecond if it were possible.

Put Judy and I down on the list. February will be a nice time to talk Whalering. I'll keep an eye on this post for further information.

Portsmouth works out great for us. Vin, are you going to hit BW up for some new goodies? The BW velcro straps from last year worked great for keeping our fishing rods off the deck and secured to the inside of the rails during trailering. Also kept the tubing tow line bundled nicely. We found lots of other uses for them.

Let's not let the topic expire. First of all.....Barry.....A Whaler is a Whaler whether it is brined in salt water or cleansed in the lake. PLEASE JOIN US. My thought on the venue is to use the same location as last year. First of all we do not have to make reservations and secondly they have the room so everyone is able to be seated together. Also, the service was very hospitable. For the new folks who wish to join us I'm talking about Newick's at Dover Point just North of Portsmouth. What are some of your thoughts? The Sea Otter II crew hope that everyone has a great holiday season and see you soon.

Gentlemen, I'd love to join you for your mid-off-season gathering. Althought I keep my whaler on the Cape, I'm officially a resident of Lowell so I'm just up the Merrimack. I'd like to meet some of you folks and look forward to trailering up from the south shore for one of your upcoming 'in-water' rendevous. May they come quick.

I've done some boating from Marblehead to Gloucester and around the Annisquam, but only as crew. My uncle Jerry captains the Guano out of Gloucester http://www.capeannmarinetours.com/about.html
I look forward to getting my Outrage up to explore the Newburyport, Portsmouth and even Portland waters. Feb. 11th would be perfect, that's right around the time I'll be ready to ditch my new years resolution diet so bring on the burgers and brew!

Just so you are prepared...new members have to stand on a table and sing a secret song (KIDDING !!!!!)

Barry -

Glad you are coming. I need to suck up to you and Bob to let me on the lake this summer since I was a no-show. LOL !

Brian -

Glad you are still based in NH. Was afraid we might loose you to the warmth of the Chesapeake...wusses that they are!

Nate -

My 2006 New Year's resolution is to be nicer to you and give Brian more of a hard time!

Phil (CascoBayOutrageous) -

What do you mean, KIDDING about the newbies singing? If I recall, you belted out a splendid rendition of the 'Schaeffer Jingle,' followed by a version of 'God Bless America' that would make Kate Smith misty......

vink, we can certainly do Newicks again, but if we have strong preferences elsewhere, I'll do the requisite legwork to secure restaurants and reservations.

I'm hoping my first mate Matthew (age 9) will take a break from a grueling hockey schedule and join us....anyone else considering kids? If not, that's OK, I'll just sit my son next to Phil so he can break his stones all afternoon....again.

What say ye, JohnO?

Keep spreading the word, folks, and just think; we're almost equidistant between last June's Great Bay rendezvous and next years June Great Bay rendezvous! Plan to get 'tarpless' early, and ask for cooperation from the weather gods.

Happy '06 to all!

Keep me posted.

Well, it looks like a pretty good response so far.

bkoelbel - Here is another suggestion. Other than the usual "chain" restaurants another we might try could be The Rosa on State Street. I know they have a banquet room they might let us use without a fixed reservation. It might be worth looking into.

Hey Controller. Have you ever launch at the Baldwin bridge ramps in Old Saybrook, CT.
I saw a Whaler there this summer launch with New Hampshire Registration. I wonder if it was you?

I'm looking to purchase a Whaler in the very near future and would love to attend a rally in New Hampshire. My favorite area is Hampton river (Hampton Beach and Seabrook) and Rye Harbor.

controller posted 01-16-2006 10:12 PM ET (US)     Profile for controller  Send Email to controller
I have not launched there, but travel all summer up the CT river to Essex and Hamburg cove. I launch out of the Black Hall River in Old Lyme. This is a small river that use to empty in the CT river, buta few winters back it got blocked due to storm erosion. It now flows into LI Sound.

I also trailer over to the Niantic River for some clamming.

Are you in CT often?

All -

As if talking all things Whaler isn't enough of an attraction...why don't we plan for The Muddy River Smokehouse in downtown Portsmouth this year!?!?!?!

That way, SO's, kids, and whomever else wants to come along will have another draw: touring, shopping (not that I want to encourage spending $$$ on anything non-Whaler, but I guess it's a reality you poor married guys have to deal with) and kids have the fun Children's Museum and Prescott Park.

Parking in the municipal lot will set you back a whopping 50 cents per hour. Menu at the Muddy is great, and there's plenty of room for a big table.

And no, Phil (CascoBayOutrageous), I do not get any kickbacks here...

Let's all agree in principal on the venue, then I'll nail down the date and advise.

Hey Brian, GF had suggested the MuddyRiver back in Nov. I don't know Portsmouth but it seems as good as any. I'm looking forward to a Saturday afternoonout and talking boats.
My FirstMate (8 year old daughter Alina) may join me, but my wife and youngest daughter will probably stay home.
Are there other kids coming? What ages?

I have an 8 year old daughter also. She just loves helping me skipper the boat and bringing the lines in.

The time on the water with the kids is just awesome.

CatBoatSailor posted 01-24-2006 11:00 PM ET (US)     Profile for CatBoatSailor  Send Email to CatBoatSailor
Yeah I try to enjoy those times with the 8 year old too. I hope she'll still enjoy the Whaler when she's 18, but I have a feeling that I may not be the 'coolest' guy around anymore when those inevitable days arrive.

So Controler (et al.) should we plan on a kids table?

Casco Bay Outrage - No problem, just name your day this summer and we'll give you a tour of the lake. I'm docked at Shep Browns in Meredith, the Lake Winnipesaukee Whaler dealer.

Also, I bought a 235 Conquest w/250 Verado last year, so now that there's more cockpit room maybe we'll get a few other "salt water" Whaler guys together and make a day of it. See you all in Feb.

I can't make it either and Muddy River was my idea. Have some brisket for me!

My family has moved from Newbury to Lynnfield this winter but I am keeping my boat in Newburyport this coming season.

If anyone would like to buy a 6 year old custom built colonial in a great family neighborhood in the Byfield section of Newbury, please contact me. Carrying 2 houses for much longer will seriously impact my boating budget!

Lisa, Spencer (14 months) and I had a good time.

We enjoyed the 40 minute drive south admiring all the green grass and trees knowing the Nor'easter was coming.

Arriving early, we enjoyed driving around Portsmouth and seeing the architecture, lay of the land.

Attendees included:

Brian
Vin
Mike Goldstein
Matt (CatBoat)

Brian picked a good restaurant (parking was easy!) and we had a nice meal.

I got some support for my idea for the following meets:

Picscat River (mid May)
Lake Win (mid August, during the week)
Merrimack River (Post Labor Day)

We are glad to see everyone.

Nate is #1 in the doghouse. Hobie is #2. LOL!

Hey,

Thanks to all for putting this 'half way to tarps off' luncheon together. It was good meeting some local CW folks. I haven't explored Portsmouth before (it's only been a place to gas up on the way to Sunday River) but I think I'll definitly be back. Good food at the Muddy River and looks like a lot of other watering holes downtown. My only complaint was the $10 parking citation from the Portsmouth PD. Apparantly you have to feed the meter on the weekends too (Lowell gives Saturdays/Sundays off) but hey, still cheaper than Boston.

Phil, your meet schedule looks good to me. I hope to join everyone for all, but it depends on me acquiring a new tow vehicle for the Revenge. 1/2 mile from the house to the ramp with the 4Runner is OK, but 100+ miles from Harwich to the Piscataqua may be a stretch. We'll see, if things don't pan out maybe someone will take me on as crew?

BTW, Mike G. was talking about a fellow from Mashpee on the Cape who collects and sells old whalers. I saw a listing on Craigslist on Mon. from someone named Walt in Mashpee who had listings for older Whalers. Unfortunately I can't find the link now. I'll keep my eye out though. He may be a good contact for parts, or even for that dream project 13' in my or Brians (distant?) future.

Catboat Sailor,
I think this was probably the listing you were referencing from Craiglist:
"older blue interior very good. Has all mahogony woodwork needing refinishing. Sides need painting. No Motor. Galvanized trailer. Walter 508 539 7930 or cell 617 640 2354. this is in or around Cape Cod".
Hope this helps.

CatBoatSailor,
No problem. I have two friends who have made purchase of older whalers through Walter. Nice guy and a straight shooter whose inventory is always changing and almost always include a couple of older Whalers.
Since you are a fellow Whaler/Sailor I had to help. I'm an tactician and helsman and travel all over the country with the J/105 and Farr 40 circuit when I am not on my 18' Outrage on the Cape. Good luck on the sale of your other boat, if I can steer any prospective buyers your way I will.
