There seemed to be some interest in this while I was in Detroit this past weekend so I thought I'd post the website.

Last year we stayed at the Westin Harbour Castle.

Westin is full...

I thought we might try to do this as Patricia has MLK day off.

We didn't start in time...I stayed at the Westin last year for the Boat Show and I'm here to tell you that at $72.00 CAD, I got a room that would cost $150.00 USD or more, back here. Maybe the Sheraton is of similar quality, don't know...

May be of no help to you but the Westin currently has rooms available at the boatshow rates for the next (closing) weekend, Jan. 20-22...

The Sheraton On Queen Street is a quality hotel. At least it was 6 weeks ago.
Just not on the lake with a view if you're lucky to have one of those rooms. Mind you, the lake could be fairly frozen hard anyway.

Or, I could go get my boat and the hardy could test out that camper back of mine. Free.

I think I was on the tail end of the conversation about the boat show in Toronto. Is all of this close to Queens Quay? Tilley's got a nice little store down there.

I noticed Mercury's one of the sponsors.

Uh, Peter, aren't there a few good restaurants in Toronto? :)

Paul

kingfish posted 12-05-2005 10:54 PM ET (US)     Profile for kingfish  Send Email to kingfish
I understand that's Tilley's flagship store; I know Katie won't let me go in there unsupervised anymore...

As I recall the Westin is very close to or right at Queens Quay.

Good restaurants in Toronto? Omigawd, I guess!!

Hello All:

I'm sorry I missed the Holiday Rendezvous but I'm up for the Boat Show again. Maybe this year I won't come down with a cold akin to the Black Plague like I did last year.

Actually John, Tilley's flaship store is out in the 'burbs in Don Mills (actually close to the other Westin, The Prince Hotel) but if you see something you like at their Queens Quay location but not in your size/color, they'll transfer it downtown for the next day.

Another good store in the Queen's Quay area is The Nautical Mind which is bookstore dedicated to, you guessed it, books on boats.

The downtown Westin, the Harbour Castle, is indeed close to Queen's Quay and the Boat Show. The rooms overlooking the Lake show a lot of the Toronto Islands, the Harbour and of course, in January, lots of ice.

If Katie knew about the store in Don Mills, she wouldn't even let me go in, supervised or not! ;-)

I'm up for this again this year if Peter can promise better weather!

Actually after the holiday rendezvous I jumped online and made reservations at the Westin for both weekends. Once we settle on a time I will cancel the unused weekend, I have until January 11 to cancel without a penalty. I suggest that people make there reservations now and not wait until we settle on a date.

John,

I'd love to go to the Tilley Store. I won't tell Katie if you don't tell Elsa.

Last year we were there the last weekend of the show which this year coincides with the Henahan family visiting Toronto. Realizing they will be busy with a hockey tournament but considering what they pulled off this past weekend I'd say January 18,19,20,21 works, and hope they can join us.

I'll act as chauffeur and drive all interested parties to the flagship store if anyone's interested.

The last time we were in Toronto Suzanne and I had the Outrage in tow. Had to search around pretty hard to find a place to launch and ended up launching at a run down little park on the West end of the city. Got the boat in the water and the battery was dead. Long story short - no boating. Had a great dinner and went to a drag queen show up on Younge Street. That trip turned into the beginning of the dual batteries for the Outrage.

For some reason it seemed odd to me that there were open slips downtown. I wonder if they were running them like parking lots. Interesting how the boats are brought into the city with little pockets of slips among the buildings.

Had a Tilley hat that was stolen up in Copper Harbor. Haven't replaced it yet. I can actually go into the store with other Adult supervision present, heh. Good thing because I'll probably be coming by myself. And no, I wouldn't say anything.

What's the show like?

Like I said earlier I'll be there for my son's hockey tournament, If can swing it, I might have to see if I can hitch a ride with someone, so Nancy can have our car to ferry herself & the kids to the Hockey Games, while I sneak away for the boat show for a few hours......plus I have an item of Peter's that he left behind on his trip to Detroit for the Holiday Rendezvous......

I just booked a room at the Westin and it is filling up quickly. So don't be shy and like kingfish mentioned, we have until January 18th @ 4:00pm to cancel.

I forgot to mention that when making my reservation at the Westin I inadvertently called some global reservation service's toll free. They told me the hotel was booked and they had no such Boat Show rate.

So I called the hotel directly and everything was fine. Must be a local thing.

Phone (416) 869 1600 Fax (416) 869 0573
Special Offers Reservations: 866-716-8102

I used the 416 number because it's local for me but try the toll free if you like.

The Sheraton Center on Queen Street is (416) 361-1000.

I used the link off of the Toronto Boat Show page to book my room. It was quick and easy and I got the Boat Show rate automatically. Don't forget you must book by December 16th to get the special rate.

Patricia and I will be there the opening weekend.

We arrive Friday night, depart Monday afternoon. We're staying at the Westin.

Thanks, Peter, for the information on reservations. I just gave up after seeing they were booked on Expedia, had no problem booking directly on their web site.

Jeez, am I a thread-killer, or what?

How many folks are planning on attending, and what weekend? Peter tells me most folks are in for the last weekend, rather than the opening weekend.

Looks like Patricia and I will be the only CWers there opening weekend...

I'm going to have to pass on this one. Something about work and cash flow, etc. Hope everyone still gets together.

We decided to cancel for a number of reasons, not the least of which is Toronto's loony Mayor David Miller.

I hope you guys have fun...

BTW, it cost me $200.00 to cancel our trip to Toronto.

Suffice it to say, I'm really not interested in contributing to Toronto (or Canada's) economy at this time.

I'll be there the weekend of the 20th, My Son Case has a hockey tournament in Toronto that weekend. Just can't tell you at this moment where I'm staying in the metro area, but I plan of meeting up with the group for some time at the boat show.....

I'm still in. Any time. I've been working so much as of late I'm even up for playing some hookey during the week!

I'm going to sit back and let those still interested form a consensus as to the date(s).

I am sorry to say that family pressures are forcing me to bow out on this one too. By the way the proximity of the Tilley Store had nothing to do with the decision.

Just got back from Toronto, I got a chance to break away from my son's Hockey Tournament on Saturday afternoon and met up with Kingfish and Banf22 for a few hours.....One word description of the Toronto Boat Show...."WOW" I wish I could have been able to spend the entire weekend at the show, you need that much time and more to take it all in....I was great seeing John & Peter again.....

It was good seeing you too Pat, and John & Katie, and Andrew. Next time I hope it's with liquid water under us all rather than this hard stuff.

Another great show, always good to spend time with Peter and Pat, and sorry I missed Andrew. Thanks to the aforementioned for their patience with me as I hobbled around on what (come March) will be a couple of replaced knees. It must have been kind of like hit the ball and drag kingfish...

JimH, if you read this, I managed to get a handfull of shots of an E-TEC 150 with the cowl off, and I'll be emailing them to you in a few minutes.
