Hmmm, an excuse to come to Maine in May? I dont see whynot, the boat goes into the water May 1. I hope to be able to make it!

I'm in if Phil and Brian allow it after missing the "1/2 way" lunch. I'll check with the Boss to see which weekend is better.

I think we should try and find a place where we can beach the boats and let the kids swim and run around, and maybe set up a grill or something though.

The only places that come to mind are Cranes Beach down in Ipswich, or the sand bar in the Merrimack. I'll ask around and try to find something up in Portsmouth area. Maybe Brian knows a spot?

Phil, Either the 13th or the 20th will work. I plan on attending but will obviously know better as May approaches. Hopefully will have upgraded my tow vehicle by then.

Marco?

Don't let today's snow scare ya! Who else is in for this?

P.S. I finally got my permanent registration # for the Outrage thanks to a persistant town clerk calling the state. It only took 7 monthsthis time. The Montauk took 9! LOL!

I'm in......that early, does it make sense to try and beach/swim?

I knew Newt's been called cold blooded, but I thought my son was the only one insane enough to swim that early!

Almost there......tarps off next weekend!!!!!!!

I would like to attend. Lets pick a date so I can try to get the day off from work.

So the thread title says May 6th and some of the posts say either the 13th or the 20th.

What day are we shooting for? And where?

I coach youth soccer on Saturdays so my preference would be for a Sunday but maybe I can make it on a Saturday.

newt posted 03-20-2006 02:55 PM ET (US)     Profile for newt  Send Email to newt
Sunday would work better for me also since I will be coaching T-ball until June sometime. I don't know the dates or times yet, but I think there are games every Saturday.

You guys are like the keystone cops. HA HA HA HA

Gordon thinks it is May 6th rather than May of 06

Newt likes Sundays. We're just not sure which one. Good going Nate!

Hobie will reply after 40 more posts and a week before the agreed date.

It must be the weather.

Phil, I like ANY Sunday, or either Saturday PM after T-ball finishes. Heck, I even like Memorial Day Weekend! Stick that in your keystone pipe and smoke it.

Gordon? Gordon who? Isn't he that fantom in the yellow boat we keep hearing about, but rarely ever see?

Nice one liner Vink!
For a Sunday to work for me it would have to be early as I would need to catch a flight home at a decent hour Sunday night. Unless it was Memorial day weekend, in which case I would fly back on Monday.

OK, OK.....so the tallest nail gets hits first......

Who's up for Sunday, May 21st?

Early is fine to accommodate York Harbor. Wonder if BG's Boathouse could provie enough slips to accommodate a luncheon/brunch? Tides are not quite in our favor, but let's discuss.

Cap'n Simeons in Kittery might be a better call

Happy Spring, all! Yesterday, I had the specific pleasure of towing the Outrage out from her winter hiding spot into the driveway....sanding, Cetol, Never Dull, buffing and waxing await...just need the temps to exceed 40 degrees!

As of now, Sunday, May 21st looks good for me and my yellow McKee.

It's a mid-day low tide that day, does that present challenges in the Portsmouth area?

I just put in for that day off from work. I am hopeful that I can go.

vink posted 03-29-2006 10:53 PM ET (US)     Profile for vink  Send Email to vink
gf........In general low tide in the Portsmouth area does not pose many problems. The only concern would be at dead low tide entering the river where BG's is located. There you would have to be careful and stay in the middle of the channel, no short cuts. For those who might trailer their boats the ramp at Eliot, ME can be used at any tide. The ramp at Rye, NH is usable but a little challenging at dead low tide.

Finally got an hour today to work on the boat. Winter tarp off, engine fired up, gear straightened out. Wow, do I feel better. Ready to launch!

While she is screaming for buffing, cleaning cushions, etc. it will wait. Hope to get a chance to get out before our gathering.

York Harbor.......Yesterday we met David Stevenson the saleman from York Harbor Marine. He said that you practically live in your new Whaler when you are in Maine. He also stated that he would like to join us on one of our Rendezvous. He said that he could provide some visual effects like flags banners, etc. so our Whaler gathering would be more noticeable to the general public and maybe generate more interest. Maybe it would be possible to convince him to come out in a new Whaler and give some demo rides. Since you most likely know him better than I do maybe you could keep him informed of our next gathering. You can contact him at: sales@yorkharbormarine.com. To confirm that it is still a small world.....His parents owned a business in the town where we live here in New Hampshire.

Vink- Thanks for the info, Dave is a great guy and YHMS has been exceptional in the 8 years we have done business with them. Whether its service or sales (our 210 Outrage is our 2nd new boat from them). Steve in their service departmant is nothing short of amazing. I have been meaning to call them to check on some things and will be sure to talk to Dave. It would be great to have some promotional help for Continuous wave. Now onto us, we are still 50/50 for this get togther. My father has been swamped at work, and I have to be back Monday for classes. I know we cannot take our boat to the lake get together as we have no tow vehicle for our rig. However I would still like to attend and maybe ride with someone for that event. Regardless I am going to make sure Dave participates in a couple events! After all this talk, heres a bump to the top of the list.

Can't you skip a day of class? It is a whaler gathering after all.

I took the tarp off last weekend and hope to fire up the engine do a decarb this weekend. Also hope to get my compass and stereo installed shortly, and then cut down this annoying tree that drops wads of red shit all over the boat!

Kyle, have you ever noticed a 27' Outrage with twin Merc 225's in your harbor? That's my boss's boat, and I think I have the green light to use it this summer for "business" purposes.

Linesides - you are most welcome. Vink and I launch at the Eliot ramp. I plan to get there about 9 and tool around.

All -

We don't have a meeting point since we haven't decided where we are going.

Brian - you are the local guy, any ideas? Is a cruise up past Great Bay entertaining enough?

I figure since Nate, John and the others from Merrimack are coming we could meet at the outer bouy at ...say 10:30 and for the locals meet in the river standing off the Eliot ramp at 11:00 a.m.

If an up river journey is not appealing, we could go down river and ??? (add your ideas)

I count 6 for this date. Will email Al and others in the area to try to build a bigger count.

Hi Phil,
Got your e-mail. Thank you for thinking of me!
Hopefully I'll ready for action by 5/21. I have yet to take deleivery of the new Montauk but that should be happening this week or the next. David Stevenson and I will be taking her out in York Harbor for a maiden voyage before I haul her back to home port in Portsmouth, NH.
I think an upriver trip would be good. I was born on the banks of the Oyster River in Durham and have lived in the 'Drowned Valley' all my life. Perhaps I can add an historical perspective of the area. Here is a link to short historical overview of the Great Bay, to wet your whistle, and perhaps on the 21st we can inhale the history first hand.

controller,
One place to launch would be Hilton Park on Rt. 4/16/Spaulding Turnpike in Dover, NH (Hilton Point). It's just 3-5 minutes off the Portsmouth Traffic Circle (RT. 95). There is plenty of parking and from there you have your pick up or down river since it is pretty much in the middle. Newick's Seafood is right there too if you want to get a lobster whilst your down in these pahts.

Seth......

RE: Hilton Park..........The ramp at Hilton Park is a very shallow ramp. It is very difficult to launch more than a small trailerable aluminum boat or cartop boat at the park. I've seen many people get stuck there including myself when I had a 14' aluminum boat. It is advisable to go across the river to Eliot, Me. This is a beautiful ramp that is usable at all tides.

Thanks for the hot tip vink. Controller may need directions to the Eliot ramp, thanks.
I'll most likely be launching closer to my home in Portsmouth (Peirce Island). Any info on that ramp would be appreciated.

vink posted 04-17-2006 08:15 AM ET (US)     Profile for vink  Send Email to vink
Seth.....
With a RAPID (and I mean rapid) ebb and flow of the tide a Pierce Island it makes it very difficult to launch and load at that location. When I had my larger boat I found it much easier to launch at Rye Harbor. I noticed that they may be putting docks at Pierce Island. I wish them good luck with that project. For just a few miles over the bridge I still think that Eliot is the best ramp along the river. There are rest rooms, a rec area and beach area in Eliot. We might even be able to raft on one of the two town mourings. We would have to check with the weekend attendant. Last year he told me I could use the mouring if I needed to.

GreatBayNH posted 04-17-2006 09:34 AM ET (US)     Profile for GreatBayNH  Send Email to GreatBayNH
Yeah, I pretty much expected an issue with the rapid waters at Peirce Island (The 'e' before 'i' is correct and not my usual bad spelling. Like 'Strawbery Banke' and 'Plimoth Plantation' they must like to use the old tyme spelling).

Eliot sounds like a plan. I'm assuming if I were on 236 ,headed north, you could walk me in from there?

Thanks Vin!

The NH folks should try to launch at the same location and follow each other to the join up with the rest of the participants. Any thoughts to that idea?
GreatBayNH posted 04-17-2006 02:26 PM ET (US)     Profile for GreatBayNH  Send Email to GreatBayNH
Sounds good to me. Vink is saying Eliot has an optimal launching point. I'm not opposed to driving a few extra miles to avoid the pit falls of the sites I suggested. I'm just waiting for the driving directions.

Is Eliot, Maine as issue for you Scott?

Scott,
If you take 101 to 33 to get to the NH Seacoast there is a launch on the Squamscott river just off rt. 108 (a short hop off rt. 33 in Stratham). This gets you in the Great Bay albeit a little far upriver.

I hear tell there's a restaurant with a dock up in Dovah. Or we could go up the Oystah Rivah and prey upon the college girls at UNH. They should all be grabin' rays 'bout that time of yee-ah.

It looks like WEEI is out of Woostah. I don't think you'll be pullin' in those wicked fequencies from ova hee-ah. If you have a laptop with an air-card you could stream it over the Net though.

Casco Bay you are coming South on Rte 95 and must be takeing Exit 2 off Rte 95.

Coming from the South after crossing into Maine over the Million Dollar Bridge I take Exit 1 (To Rte 103). At the end of the ramp I go left for about 1/2 mile and turn right onto Rte 103. On Rte 103 go 2.4 miles to Hammond Lane on the left (just past Green Acres Conference Center). The boat ramp is at the end of Hammond Lane.

GPS coordinates for the ramp: N 43*06.962'

I will probably bring the munchkins and my wife. As long as we don't raft up and talk about Whalers for too long - they tend to get a little restless. It worked out well last year when I picked them up in Portsmouth.

Brian, what do you think about a cruise up one of the rivers or far into Great Bay? Can we dock up and eat some lunch somewhere?

bkoelbel, that would be me. It's actually 'Newmarket International' since about 1998 I think. The locals all still call it Newmarket Software so I'm assuming you are one? I've been there since 99.

Newt / All -

If you're all up for it, we could meet on Great Bay, blast around for a while, and then make the roughly 6 mile trip from the Sullivan Bridge up the Piscataqua and Cocheco Rivers to "Castaways" at George's Marina in Dover, NH (43.11.88 x 70.52.99)

Now, any self respecting local still calls the joint 'The Starboard Light', (Stahbid) but it's a decent place with typical New England waterfront 'cuisine.' Kid friendly, reasonably priced, non-smoking inside.

This would probably be contingent upon George giving us the required amount of slips (there are 2 transient spaces) but only about 15 of 60 slips are occupied, so my guess is that we'll be OK.

Additionally, the Cocheco river can be a bit tricky. DFL is at 1:58 pm. It is quite well marked, and with a little local knowledge (yours truly) we should all be fine. It's mostly 'no wake' for about half the trip, so enjoy the scenery.

ASAP, give me the consensus approval here, and I'll put the wheels in motion.

CASCO BAY OUTRAGE: we always assumed you were a wuss, thanks for confirming it on the board. Carhartts? Please...I wore shorts and topsiders (no socks) yesterday and it was delightful!

NEWT: The plan outlined above should be just the right mix of cruising, dining, and letting this kids run around.

SETH: I am actually a Newmarket Software alumni, having wotked there in Sales from 10/97 - 7/00. Great company, many friends still there.

bkoelbel,
That "Newmarket" cap you pegged in my pix from yesterday is no longer. I took the new Montauk from YHM to the mouth of the Oyster River today. Just feet before the middle bridge (Rt 1 By-Pass/Sarah Mildred Long)a gust of wind kicked it off my noggin' right into the drink. A 2 minute search was conducted before officially declaring it "Lost at Sea"

Re: Newmarket
So I must know your face but I can't figure it out from your Username.

RE: Dover trip
George is an old acquaintance of mine. That would be cool to go see him as I haven't run into him in a couple of years. I worked for a restaurant down there next to the marina circa 1980-1981. His family owned the building at the time. I don't think they ran the actual restauant when I was there though. I think the name at the time was "Touch of Class"?

I am up for bkoelbel's idea. If I launch at the elliot ramp, I assume I can get into great bay from there.

vink, David Stevenson sounded very interested in our gathering on the 21st. He mentioned he hasn't got any contact info from the person he spoke with about the banners, etc (you?). If that was you give him a quick call. He's ready to offer something for the event.

Sorry vink, after further review I see you were asking YorkHarbor to reply to David. My bad.

YorkHarbor..David Stevenson is ready to talk about banners, etc. As of today we wasn't sure who to call.

OK, sounds like Piscataqua / Cocheco / Castaways is acceptable to the group, so I'll head down there tomorrow and see what I can confirm.

Will report back afterwards.

Seth, I have a replacement NI cap for you. Only Billy Dorr could select such a hideous color, so if you like it, it's all yours.

If you take it, I'll give you a free bowl of soup too.

no problem, YorkHarbor. Dave didn't seem to worried about it. He said, off the cuff, that if it were nice that day he'd like to get down there himself and tease us with a new 190 Outrage or 180 Dauntless. ;-)

I am game for Brian's itinerary.

I met a whaler guy one town over who may come with his 2002 180 Dauntless.

Anyone heard from Al (Maine Pep), Hobie etc?

Dare we find a way to contact and invite he who shall remain nameless? (aka JohnO?)

How about BBDing (Bob Dingman?)

Good news from the Dovah waterfront.....the restaurant will be open and George has said he can make space available provided he has a count by Friday PM.

Having said that, please confirm your attendance:

1: # of people
2: size/model of your Whaler

I emailed with BBDing and he has a comitment. Also emailed Hobie, no reply yet.

The Cape Ann person (wink wink to Newt) responded positively so we should count on him and his 17'.

Will try to confirm with a new whaler aquaintenance if he is coming with his 18' Dauntless.

Thank you for the email Phil, and for motivating me to get back on this site. It has been far too long. I am not sure if I can make this trip, but I did want to let you all know that my wife Amy gave birth to a healthy baby boy, Ethan Alexander on March 18, 2006. Hope to catch up with you guys sometime this summer between diaper changes.

I was in contact with Dave at YHMS today, sounds like he is probably going to attend assuming the weather is nice. I gave him the dates and prelimnary itenerary and gave him my number and email to keep in contact. I also emailed him a link to this thread. Hopefully I can make it, it is 50/50 at this point!

I will probably trailer my McKee Craft 196 to Eliot, however, not run it up from Newburyport.

I'll be coming up from Lowell. I'd like to do the run from the Merrimack, but I don't think it's going to work for that weekend. Maybe we can get together some other time this summer. I boat the Cape mainly but hope to try some northern waters and local knowledge would be appreciated.

I'll be trailering up to the ramp at Eliot with the rest. I've never been up that way before. Is the lot big enough for all of us to park trailers, or should I plan on showing up early to avoid a hassle?

Phil (aka Sybil w/ multiple aliases...)

Was your bra strap pinching too tightly last night, restricting blood flow to your brain?

I would think someone from Maine would be extremely embarassed to even consider bailing more than a week out...

But then again, maybe you're really from Manhattan....

Let's all hang tough (you too Phil) until Thursday and begin to assess then.

We have enough open dock space now to host the group...can't say that would be the same past June 1st.

No counts given to the restaurant just yet, so CatBoatSailor, you and team are good to go.

It's obvious to me that Phil's pantyhose is one size too small! Does the sun even shine up there in fog country?

Catboat, I look forward to seeing you out on the Merrimack some time this summer. I think I will be trailering up to Eliot unless a couple more boats come up with me from the Merrimack. Heck, with gas prices around $3.00/gal, I'll save $70 by trailering up instead.

I think we'll be OK. The forecast for the 21st varies between Durham, Dover and Portsmouth. Durham shows sunny, Dover 30% chance of rain and Portsmouth 60% chance of rain. I'd say the more west we go the better the weather. Of course we all know not to go by a forecast for this area that is that far out anyway.

If the Piscataqua and surrounding rivers are anything like the Merrimack River right now, I don't think we will want to put the boats in! The Merrimack is RAGING!!! A bunch of boats and docks broke loose this morning (Ferry Landing), and I imagine many more will follow. Raw sewerage is pouring in up in Haverhill, and a couple of the Bridges are closed.
GreatBayNH posted 05-15-2006 06:17 PM ET (US)     Profile for GreatBayNH  Send Email to GreatBayNH
I was going to bring up the same point. The Piscataqua is a different animal than other typical rivers. It's more of an avenue or ingress and egress to the Atlantic from the "Drowned Valley" known as the Great Bay. It "rages" pretty much everyday with the tides (second strongest tidal current in the continental US). The concern, IMHO, would be the 7 rivers which flow into the Great Bay adding tons of debris we'd normally not have to contend with. I'll keep my eye on the Piscataqua to see if the worst flooding in 70 years has any effect on current.

Maine Pep posted 05-15-2006 09:01 PM ET (US)     Profile for Maine Pep  Send Email to Maine Pep
Hi Guys, I live on the Piscataqua and the current is really moving as a result of the rain. Even when the tide is coming in, it appears that the current is still going out. One good thing is that low tide only reaches about half tide. Usually this will last for a few days after the rains but the large amount of rain is not usual. I won't be able to join you if it's still have on this weekend. If you go, be on the lookout for debris (logs, trees, wood, etc.) that might do serious damage to your boat.

Plenty of parking at the Eliot ramp this early in the season.

Here is the Monday 9:15 pm River Forcast:

FOR THE MERRIMACK RIVER AT HAVERHILL...
MAJOR FLOODING IS FORECAST.
THE 9 PM MONDAY STAGE WAS 22.3 FEET.
FLOOD STAGE IS 15.0 FEET.
THE RIVER WILL FALL BELOW FLOOD STAGE BY 7 PM WEDNESDAY.
AT STAGES NEAR 20.0 FEET...WIDESPREAD FLOODING ALONG THE MERRIMACK
RIVER FROM HAVERHILL TO ITS MOUTH IS EXPECTED. THIS WILL AFFECT BOTH
RESIDENTIAL AND BUSINESS INTERESTS. MARINAS ALONG THE RIVER WILL
LIKELY EXPERIENCE CONSIDERABLE FLOODING.

I took the family out for a drive along the River from Newburyort to Amesbury and Merrimack. I heard that Mackenzies Marina was wiped out, but can't confirm because the road was closed. We did see one sunken boat, and a couple boats and dock sections piled against the docks of another downstream marina (Hatteras Point). There is lots of debris in the water, and the river is starting to flood many of the houses.

Hi everyone.....I tried to hole off as long as possible to tell you that we will not be able to join you this weekend because later is morning we will be signing papers on purchasing a new house. Our children want to start moving us this weekend. I tried to figure out how to kill two birds with one stone but we still have to use my truck for the move. I got the Whaler out of the Winnepesaukee River that exits Lake Winnisquam just in time early Sunday morning. Right now Lake Winnisquam is 17" above full and the river where my dock is located is running at 2,520 cubic feet per second. Before this last rain event it was running at 260 cubic feet per second. Hopefully I will not lose this new dock like I lost the last one during the heavy rains this past October. Right now I have the dock covered with cinder blocks. If you do have the event this weekend stay safe and keep an eye out for the floatsome. If not, we will look forward to joining you on a new date or on Winnepesaukee.

Greetings all,

After reviewing the latest posts, I'll add my thoughts and recommend that we reschedule.

George's Marina in Dover, where we were going to tie up, has been badly damaged, cleats ripping out, and docks snapping like toothpicks yesterday. Thanks to some quick thinking by the team, most boats were moved and remained undamaged.

My Whaler looks safe and sound, but nobody can get out on the docks, so I can't get aboard to make sure.

The Castaways restaurant we were going to use is heavily damaged, too early to even contemplate a reopening date.

Down river, both the Cocheco and Piscataqua are raging, and will be for several days to some. Private homes on the river have completely lost docks, and severe erosion and mudslides are now the concern. As Maine Pep mentioned, anything and everything is flowing downstream at a destructive pace.

So, after the second 'storm of the Century' in 7 months, a rendezvous for this Sunday was just not meant to be.

Glad to hear everyone from the site is safe (boats included). Certainly sounds like a wild time up there! Down here in Ohio we have had two weeks straight of rain, except it has been spotty and light. Certainly seems it is escalating and heading your way. As a reschedule, I will Definetely be in town June 11, and could possibly make June 18th work.

Should I start a new thread (this has 100 posts)?

gf posted 05-16-2006 10:17 PM ET (US)     Profile for gf  Send Email to gf

A rescheduling is definitely in order. The waters in our area will be too dangerous this weekend.

newt, on Sunday night/Monday morning, docks from Mackenzie's Landing swept downstream and broke free some of the docks from Hatter's Point. That debris then swept further downriver and destroyed and broke free many of the docks at Ferry Landing. The debris continued downriver to damage docks and boats at North End Boat Club and the Newburyport Yacht Club.

I have not heard a firm number on boats that were sunk but among all of the marinas it must be in the 5-10 range. I know one of my former neighbors in Byfield lost his boat.

The whole Merrimack River is a mess, it will be several weeks before things return to normal. It's not clear to me when my marina - Ferry Landing - will be able to recover.

Here's the story from the local paper...
