Okay Folks! It's official! Let's rendezvous on Lake Lanier September 23rd and 24th. Any suggestions of where to meet for starters? We need someone who knows the lake!-k

I would like to sugget we launch from Charleston Park. It is very easy to find. Take GA 400 north from Atlanta until the first traffic light (end of freeway). Turn right. Go about two miles. Look for brown state park sign on the right.

It is very close to the North Georgia Premium Outlet Stores. There should be plenty of hotels for out of town guests to choose from.

The traffic is much better on the west side of the lake.

That looks like a good place to launch, however I will probably put in down by the dam at Lanier Park as it is closer to home! No reason we can't have several launch sites and one area to converge. We need to have a consensus as far as camping versus hotel stays. There are two campsites available for larger groups which have covered eating facilities, etc... These require reservations in advance, both are available for that weekend as I write this, that may change! It all depends on what folks want to do. There are many lakeside camping areas as well for individual campers. They are all beautiful and well maintained. -k

Minitauk,
I am in...I looked for you today on the lake. It was a great day.

jmorgan-Glad to hear you're in! We need some ideas of where to go and what to do, I am only familiar with the lower end of the lake, and not much of that! Any suggestions of lakeside dining (maybe lunch somewhere?!) and other accomodations would be great! As for fishing- I went on Friday- had a fish strip about 100 yards of line from my heavy boat pole, then it broke a 17lb leader! spotted many stripers at the surface, one looked like a small tarpon!-k

I'd love to come, but it might be a little too far for a weekend trip while school is in session. I'll have to get some signatures from some higher ups first too. I'll stay posted.

The weekend of 9/8-10 I will be at Lake Norman (Charlotte, NC) for an Antique and Classic Boat Society with the Jersey Skiff if anyone is interested. www.speedskiffs.com senti-MENTAL-value JS-04. Wish it was another date. I better have my Katama done by then.

Keep me posted when another "gathering" will be in the Atlanta area.

I'm in - will be cool to meet a support group for this Whaler addiction.

Not wanting to start a thread on this--just in case it impacts site selection----Are any of you following the Lake news in the Gainesville Times? The Corp messed up and didnt realize the lake was two feet lower due to a faulty gauge. Most ramps are in an around deep water but worth a heads up.

www.gainesvilletimes.com/news/stories/20060620/localnews/104441.shtml

Also did anyone ever contact Bolling Bridge Marine about showing up? It would be cool if they brought one of their boats for test rides or something.

Here's another one.

Maybe this will slow down traffic on the Lake this summer, wishful thinking on my part. There may be some nice beaches if we do the redezvous in Sept. though.

Superdave-good to hear you are in! Tell us more about Bolling Bridge Marine- are they Whaler dealers? Do you have any contacts?
Garey- You need to wet a hook! I've been catching stripers after a year long "drought"! If these water levels continue to drop we may have to have our rendezvous in the parking lot of the Dam Store! That ramp still has water under it's docks, fortunately!-k

Bolling Bridge was suggested in another thread by Joe / jmorgan40 so I was just refreshing the idea--If Joe knows them then great or if it would be a cold call for either I can handle it no prob.

I think Lanier is going to be low through the summer--but we should definitely still plan this. Does anyone remember what the public ramps were like in 98-02?

Dave,
It would be a cold call for either of us. Go ahead and call since I am on vacation. In fact I may not return from paradise. Down in Key West for a week with the 20 Outrage. It is heaven. Took the girls out to Sand Key today snorkeling. Had a great time. Let us know how you make out

No prob Joe---Went to Bolling Bridge today and got the news that on July 1st, the Boston Whaler piece is moving to Marine Max inside the Bald Ridge Marina (off exit 15 on 400). Had to do with Brunswick making a national change not anything to do locally with Bolling Bridge so they are sad to see them go. Gave Marine Max a call today but the sales manager was at lunch so stay tuned.

Talked to the Sales Mgr Joey Jones at Marine Max and he said nothing was final yet with picking up the Boston Whaler line but wants us to keep him posted. Told him about the Rendezvous and he said he is "always up for stuff like that" so that is good news.

Plan on spending the day in Cumming on the 4th. Will the cw'rs be congreagating anywhere special on the lake and where is a decent ramp at that end. Thanks, Bill

cbgann- I plan on staying as far away from Lanier as possible on the 4th! It turns into a real zoo on most Saturdays, I can't imagine what it'll be like on the 4th! I'm sorry I can't help you in regard to a ramp, I use Lanier Park or the one next to the Dam store- still plenty of water under the docks there. I do hope you'll join us for the Rendezvous in September-k

I put in yesterday (Saturday 7/1) at Clarks Bridge in the afternoon. Wasnt bad at all, parking lot half full. Not too many people on the lake up there. DNR was out and about. On the 4th there will be fireworks at Lanier Islands and at the American Legion cove in Gainesville. I was out last 4th and it wasn't too bad on my 13'. Lake Rabun and Burton have both already had their fireworks.

superdave- Thanks for contacting MarineMax. It's nice to know where the local Whaler dealer is. It seems since I got interested in Whalers this is the third dealer in the area. I remember looking at new Montauk somewhere on Holiday Rd. several years ago. Baldridge might be a good place to meet up for the rendezvous. Dockside grill at Holiday Marina is a great place for lunch. They usually have plenty of open slips and the food is great. They have a covered deck overlooking the water. Just an idea. I'll keep checking back for details. Take care-Garey

So far the unknown variables (as always) weather and water (will Lanier have water!?). Possible MarineMax participation? How about some more ideas? I would love to spend some time exploring the north end of the lake, might be a fun ride, especially with a bunch of Whalers in formation! Keep 'em coming guys!-k

By the way cbgann- It turned out that I did go out on the lake on the 4th even though I swore I wouldn't! I had planned on working, but didn't have to, so I figured some very early fishing would be safe. The ramp was jammed at 5am, but the creek I fished was empty. Caught a few small fish and then called the wife to see if she wanted to go for a ride. I was right, it was a zoo! Rode around Lanier Island and got out before noon- sea-don'ts, go-fasts, cabin cruisers, houseboats, and even boats that appeared to be on fire-were everywhere!-k

minitauk,
I like the idea of putting in on the south end, maybe East Bank or Lanier Park. Then we could cruise the southend for a while and stop for lunch at Holiday marina. I have never been there but hear it is good. Then we can shoot up to the north end above Browns Bridge. I better get to work so the Outrage looks shipshape for the meet.
minitauk85 posted 07-24-2006 07:47 PM ET (US)     Profile for minitauk85  Send Email to minitauk85
jmorgan-That sounds like a good idea- I suppose if folks want to use the Charleston park ramp as well, we could swing up by water from East Bank/Lanier Park area- I haven't been up either of those creeks ( 6 mile, 2 mile ,etc..) as I have been focused on the stripers! Lunch at Holiday sounds good as well! I hope you don't mind taking the lead boat position, I rarely go much further than around Lanier Island, I need to learn the lake one of these years! Hopefully we'll have enough water! -k

No problem taking the lead but if we do not get some rain soon we will need wheels on these boats. Since we struck out with the local dealers, I am going to try sending an email to Boston Whaler to see if they want to send us a few goodies. Although they may be ready to give up on this market. They just can not seem to keep a dealer on this lake.

i still have some hope for whichever dealer at least bringing a boat by--- i know marinemax has a big searay "aquapalooza" owners event this weekend so our event is a lot smaller and way in the future. we're at 8 boats so that is great, something people have talked about for a while and now it's in motion. just sounds cool to have a fleet of 8 whalers cruising on lanier.

lanier is still low but the traffic is also low based on what i have seen. i went out on burton on july 8th and it was great, drove by hartwell last weekend and it looked down some like lanier. lots of whalers on rabun and burton in case you have never been up there for a day trip. perfect lakes for smaller whalers.

jmorgan40 posted 07-25-2006 07:17 PM ET (US)     Profile for jmorgan40  Send Email to jmorgan40
Dave,
I have been up to Burton several times. It is a great mountain lake. I would not hold out much hope for MarineMax. SeaRay and Formula is where their money is, and there are hundreds of Rays on the lake. I have only seen maybe a dozen whalers on Lanier. But a fleet of 8-10 whalers will look pretty cool for Lanier. Maybe a few out of town members will decide to join us.

Just found out at work I got approved for an executive education program...3 weeks of school in the Classic city of Athens. Not far from Lanier...would it be worth it to tow a 21 foot Conquest up for the weekends or is it too much boat for this lake w/ current low water levels?
minitauk85 posted 08-02-2006 09:28 PM ET (US)     Profile for minitauk85  Send Email to minitauk85
Mambo- I am still amazed at the size and depth of Lanier- most of the time I look at my depth finder and find that I'm in anywhere from 60 to 90 feet of water, and can easily throw a rock on shore! Some of the docks are up dry but there should be plenty of water! C'mon and play! I am between Athens and the lake (as is jmorgan) in Lawrenceville if you need anything-k

Headed to class on Monday, so a month earlier than the planned rendevous. Course syllabus sounds pretty involved, so I may not tow the boat 6 hours. However, I still may check out the area on a free Sunday if anyone's around.

Please add me to the GA-FL rendevous distro list, too. I live in Jacksonville, FL area. Will definitely join any St Johns river cruise, ICW or Solomon's Island/Brunswick, GA event.

Hey everyone, I'm new to these here parts, but this rendezvous sounds like fun. If I am in town I may try to catch up with you folks. I am not sure if my little '84 13 Sport can make it that far up the lake. I ususally put in at Shoal creek. My little whaler is used to shrimping down in Savannah in the creeks, so this big lake is quite a change. :-)

Murphy- Welcome aboard! your 13 should do fine on the lake-it's big but usually pretty calm waters (unless your in the middle of the south end on a Saturday afternoon). If you need an extra 6 gallon tank or two let me know!-k
Murphy posted 08-10-2006 09:38 AM ET (US)     Profile for Murphy  Send Email to Murphy
Minitauk, thanks for the offer but I was lucky enough to get a 12 gallon tempo tank (that fits nicely under the front seat) last fathers day. As for the lake, Murphy's law is usually in effect- our favorite beach is on Gaines Ferry Islands- right in the middle of the lower end! Come to think of it... that might make a good place to meet up... lots of sand and room to.

Does anybody know of a site that has a good map of Lanier? the Army corp map leaves a lot to be desired- it would be nice to have one with place names ie: Gaines Ferry Islands, Three Sisters, etc... I have no clue where these spots are!-k
jmorgan40 posted 08-11-2006 07:10 PM ET (US)     Profile for jmorgan40  Send Email to jmorgan40
minitauk85,
The Army Corp maps are probably the best you can get for free. It doesn't really matter since the locations you mention are not on any of the maps. Although I am far from an expert, I have never heard of Gaines Ferry Islands, maybe someone else knows where they are. 3 Sisters are the 3 islands at the mouth of 6 mile creek directly across from Holiday marina and Big Creek. To confuse matters more...There are actually 4 islands!
Murphy posted 08-11-2006 10:08 PM ET (US)     Profile for Murphy  Send Email to Murphy
Hey guys, the only reason I know the names of those islands is because I got it from the maps at the USACE web site. The Gaines Ferry Islands are south of the 4 sister islands and right across from Holiday marina. If you can't see the names on the maps, make sure you have the latest version of Acrobat reader. I used another version and didn't see the names either. Holiday marina and the islands are on Grid 08 map.

Right you are Murphy! I found it on grid 8 with names! On ocassion some of the grids on that site won't even appear when you click on them, of course I haven't used it in a few months. Thanks for the heads up- will try to check out that beach this Sunday, weather permitting, looks fine by map!-k

Minitauk - Thanks for your gracious offer, but class has been pretty intense...lecture Friday until 3:30 pm yesterday. I decided to come home this weekend to FL. Next Friday, finish at noontime and looks like family may delay going to Aquarium until after Labor Day...still very crowded on weekends there according to my classmate. I saw another very nice Lake between Macon and Athens as I drove north on Rte 129, near Eatonton.

Murphy,
That's not Holiday Marina on Grid 8, that's Aqualand marina which is about 2 miles north of Holiday marina. Holiday marina is on Big Breek on the North side of Lake Lanier Islands right before you enter the park.
jmorgan40 posted 08-19-2006 09:06 PM ET (US)     Profile for jmorgan40  Send Email to jmorgan40
Holiday Marina is on grid 3. There are alot of great beaches to meet at on the backside of three sisters and Lights Ferry island on grid 8. Real nice area between the two islands where you see the 3 warning markers.

those maps are great. judging by the dock/ramp elevations, charleston park [grid 11] has 5-8 more feet of water than the other options we listed.
Murphy posted 08-20-2006 11:58 PM ET (US)     Profile for Murphy  Send Email to Murphy
Jmorgan40- Yes you are right. I was looking at the wrong map when I wrote that. I was trying to convey that those beaches were across from Holiday - just north of the marina. I have never been to Aqualand, but on the map it looks to be also across from those beaches but north of them. Thanks for keeping me straight. I'll learn this lake one of these days. :-)

Bad news gang...I just was looking at my daughter's Varsity Softball schedule and she has a tournament the weekend of the meet on Lanier. I really want to be with the CW members on the pond but heck, I can not miss hr tournament. I already miss way too many weekday games due to work and traffic. We do not have game times yet since it is a month out but maybe I can break away for a few hours. I will let you guys know as soon as I know.

On a differnt note, I sent an email to Boston Whaler a few weeks ago but never got a reply. I was attempting to get some items to give away at the rendezvous. Does anyone have any direct contacts because I m batting zero.
Thanks

Hey Everyone - Are there still a few folks planning on getting together for this rendezvous? I go on vacation with my Sister's family every year and this year they booked a house on St. George Island Sept. 23rd-30th. So unfortunately it looks like I will have to miss the first day at the beach so I can be on Lanier. (Weather permitting). I also added a few pictures of my Montauk out on Lanier in my profile. I think the link works.

ps. Does anyone know anything about boating around St. George? I've never had my Montauk on the Gulf Coast.

Garey- I am still planning on being there! It might be a good idea if everyone who is planning on attending could check in on this thread- September is tomorrow! As for St. George and the surrounding areas- you are in luck, I used to live about 20 miles from St George and fished offshore and inshore quite a bit. If you can buy a chart and bring it to the rendezvous I can give you some info about the area, and spots to fish or just cruise too. You'll love it!-k

Very nice Montauk. I am surprised I never saw you on the pond. MiniTauk, I may still make it. My wife is trying to make me not feel bad about missing any of my daughter's games. Even if I try to make it for a few hours I will be there with the outrage. I am going to work on my teak this weekend if the weather allows. Pics are in my profile Garey. Hey guys, I am talking with Traci at Boston Whaler about getting us some free stuff for our rendevous... and she is talking to their marketing dept. They need a headcount- I am guessing 2 people per boat, maybe 12 boats... rounding up= 30 people? I am thinking maybe just tell them 50 in case we have kids and more people show up? What do you guys think?

Murphy,
Great news...I contactd BW back in July but I never heard back. I am glad you got to the right person. well now for the bad news, I am now positive I will not make the gathering. I just can't win. I found out yesterday that I need to go in the hospital on Sept 20. I have been waiting for a date from the surgeon for almost 3 months. I was hoping for sometime in October so not to miss this gathering. The doctor said I should be home by Friday, 8/22 but he also said no boat for a few weeks. Have a great time gang. I will be there in spirit.

Joe- sorry to hear about your surgery! Hope everything goes well- we'll be thinking of you!
Murphy-we really appreciate you pursuing the BW stuff! It's starting to look like this will be a small rendezvous- from the lack of response to a roll call- it's looking like we may have 4-5 whalers max!
We need to start finalizing some basic details like: where? what time? etc...I'd like to suggest we start off by putting in at Lanier Park around 10 a.m. and meet GAwhale(and others) up at Charleston park, I've never been there but I'm sure we can find it! Any other suggestions? -k

Minitauk- I'll be putting in at Lanier Pointe also. 10am sounds good. We can find Charleston Park no problem. I'll look at the map tonight. I've been all over Lanier, but most of my landmarks are self named. Joe take care, I'll be looking for the T-Top Outrage in Oct. If we can get a few Whalers together I'll take some pictures and post them.

I sent emails to those I think plan on attending, but haven't chimed in yet! Apologies in advance if I missed someone!
Garey- How about leading a run up to Browns Bridge on the rendezvous- haven't been that far up the lake yet- been too focused on fishing the south end! Lunch at Dockside sounds good too!-k

I am still in.

I plan on launching from Charleston Park boat ramp at 10:AM.

I like the idea of meeting at Dockside Grill at Holiday Marina for lunch and then we can shoot up to Brown's Bridge afterwards.

minitauk85 - Do you think we should start a new thread for ease of reading?

I haven't heard back from Traci at BW yet, I suspect she is in Beaufort this weekend... so maybe Ill hear back next week. I wanted to be in Beaufort myself-am going to Savannah for the weekend- but I don't think Ill can break away from the grandparents long enough. :-) Ill keep you guys posted as to the status of the "free stuff".

It is with much regrets (sort of) that I have to make notification of a change in my plans. I have just gotten my sons football schedule, even though we were supposed to be all weeknight games we have a couple of Saturdays, the 23rd being one. Its an 11:00 game, count us out.

Have fun.

Sorry to hear you can't make it Aldog! We appreciate the RSVP however! Maybe next time!-k

Crosspost -

Good news and bad news- Traci at BW came through and is shipping us some BW embroidered fleece blankets!! The bad news is that I am not sure if they will make it by Saturday. :-(

If they don't I can hold on to them until next time. Maybe we can have another one in the spring to kick off the boating season in 2007.
