I would think we can rule out west of Mobile as there are no places for out of town folks to stay (all the motels not destroyed are still full with fema or construction workers)

I haven't been back to the Orange Beach area post Ivan ,I would hope the area is making progress or we could look more to the east Ft. Walton/ Destin area.

Its not going to sink our boats! Let's go for it. I vote at Pirates' Cove in Perdido.

I know Pirate's Cove is up and running and would allow us a place to eat and consume beverage. I'm not married to that idea - how are the islands off the Mississippi coast (Petit Bouy, Horn or Deer)? Dauphin Island is now two islands so I suspect there would be plenty of privacy on the west end, but not much to do. I'm not familiar enough with the Pensacola area and eastward to make a suggestion. Please, someone from that area chime in here...

Pirate's Cove sounds good if there are accommodations available. Does anyone know if condos and hotels are back up and running?

So, we're tempting Mother Nature or Poseidon or whoever again, are we? Sounds like a plan!

We're in, wherever, whenever -- except I have a work obligation on Saturday, July 8, that will knock out that weekend for me.

Mike Brantley posted 05-30-2006 04:00 PM ET (US)     Profile for Mike Brantley  Send Email to Mike Brantley
Assuming we do this somewhere to the east of here (I'm in Mobile), like in the Pirate's Cove vicinity as suggested, I think we will come by boat. Now, despite all my efforts during the winter to make our Revenge's cabin more comfy (got rid of the nastified headliner), mama does not want to sleep on the boat. No air conditioning, and it's going to be hot.

So, I'll be wanting a place to dock the boat overnight that's within walking distance of a cool place to sleep. A condo with a dock would be ideal, and I believe Chris from farther south in Florida did this when he came to our Pirate's Cove/Perdido rendezvous two years ago. I have no idea if Ivan clobbered the place where he stayed. I'll do some research, but I can't do too much until we've settled on dates and a venue. We stayed in a nice condo on the Gulf side that year, but now we require something on the ICW side with a dock.

I'm thinking it would be feasible for Cheryl, Sam and me to come by boat because there are plenty of destinations that are accessible by water. Besides Pirate's Cove (excellent free launch ramps nearby at Josephine Park), there is the state park at Big Lagoon, plenty of restaurants and marinas, and some shopping. New and still partly under construction is The Wharf in Orange Beach. This will be a facility with a million square feet of retail and restaurant space, state-of-the-art movie theaters, a ferris wheel and a 190-slip marina. We haven't been there, so I don't know how complete it is. There was a Hank Williams Jr. concert there this past weekend for the opening of the amphitheater.

There's also the SanRoc Cay Marina somewhere over there. I'm supposed to call back on Thursday or Friday to ask Rhonda about overnight slip rental, but it seems I can dock my 22 Revenge there for $25 or less a night. They expect to be full around the July 4 weekend but will probably have transient slips available on other dates, I'm told.

Are there any locals to the area who can report on the Ivan recovery?

I suggest Mobile as a rendezvous point in the future, perhaps after we open our waterfront maritime museum. But they haven't even started building that yet.

Mike makes very valid points. I doubt my Missus would like to sleep the boat either.
How about the 24th and 25th of June? I have a feeling that weekend will be storm free...

Count us in. June 24-25 sounds good but we can be somewhat flexible with the dates. I heard that Phoenix on the Bay in Orange Beach was a good place to stay and close to Pirate's Cove. We have reservations already in Panama City for June 26-28 so we could head down a couple days early depending on the dates we decide on.

Hey Mike!
The place we stayed at was on Cotton Bayou, can't remember the name of it right now but it was across from the water tower and about 150 yards from the public boat ramp. It was only about 15 minutes from Pirate's Cove and had a dock (at least it did the few hours we left before Ivan came through) I got a magazine of condos in that area a few weeks ago from the realtor we used and it was still listed. If I can find it or the company's name I'll let you know.
We won't make it this year, too many things going on here to go that far but we are ready to head to Stuart in a few hours- the boat is loaded and ready to go!

June 24/25 might be tough for us , Kathy is out of town the weekend before and the the following weekend she is chairing Gautier's 20th birthday, if she has the birthday plans wraped up we might can make it. Postponing may not help us as there are just not enough weekends in the year.

What do you guys think about the Pensacola area? We stayed there last year. There are plenty of boat launches, reasonable rates for lodging and plenty of pretty water. We launched at Bayou Grande last year and ran over to Spanish Point where we pretty much had the beaches to ourselves.

We are planning to make a run to Deer Island then on to Horn Island on Friday Morning the 9th. We'll stay at Deer if the wind is up.

We scoped out a beaching spot today for Deer, the debris is a worry but not all over the place like I expected. I also watched where everyone was going.

It seems as if quite a few of you cannot make it the weekend of the 24th. How is the second or third weekend of July? (I think the dates are 8,9 and 15,16). I think somewhere between Perdido Bay and Pensacola work best for the greatest number of people....what do you guys think?

The weekend of the 15th or 22nd works better for us too. I would tend to think the the 8th falls too soon after the July 4th holiday. Most people make big plans for that day and they may need more than just days between the holiday and a Rendezvous to recoup. Any location between Mobile and Pensacola works for us too.

The 22nd & 23rd it is! Everyone shold be recouped from the 4th by that time. Now for the place. I'm pretty familiar with Perdido Bay and the Orange Beach area but not at all familiar with Pensacola. Either place is fine with me. I would think Pensacola area offers more in the way of acomodations for anyone having to travel. Anyone "in the know" of that area please chime in... or suggestions of elsewhere.

If everyone wants to have a fish fry the Sat. night of the meet, I might be able to arrange it.

Even though we stayed in Pensacola (on the NAS) during the Ivan Rendezvous, the venue at Pirates Cove, then on to Perdido Key was a good one for Saturday. We launched out of Sherman Cove and had a nice ride to Pirates Cove Saturday morning. It was a good place to beach and eat lunch, and Perdido Key for the afternoon probably wasn't as crowded as around Fort McCrae. It was also a short hop home in the afternoon.

We also thought the get-together dinner on Friday night at Bear Point Marina "Back Porch" restaraunt was good and they took good care of us. I guess they call it the "Giggling Grouper" now?

At any rate, I've put 22-23 July on the calendar, and we're going to try to make it if we can.

We stayed in both Marriott Courtyard and Holiday Inn Express in Pensacola last year close to I-10 and they were $120-140 per night. We parked our boat at both of them with no problems. The marina where we launched was about 15-20 minutes away with plenty of parking, and a place to wash your boat and flush the motor.

JREvans,

July is the peak rental month in Gulf Shores and Orange Beach. You probably will not find anything that can accommodate boats for less that $200 per day. The point is you can pay $190 a day at Navy Cove or $330 a day at Phoneix on the Bay or as Mike said sleep on the boat.

Everything has gone crazy since the hurricanes. Because so many rentals and hotels were destroyed, the survivors have raised their rates, sometimes to ridiculous levels. Borders on gouging if you ask me. I'm afraid they are going to hurt themselves in the long run.

If we could find a location that had plenty of choices for launching with adequate parking it wouldn't be necessary to pay premium rates for a resort on the water like Navy Cove or Phoenix on the Bay. I'm staying in Panama City 3 nights, and Destin 2 nights this month at rates much lower than what I'm seeing in AL. We will be spending the majority of the time on the boat and beach so I don't mind staying it at a hotel that isn't on the water and trailering to the ramp to save $50 to $125 per night. That's why I suggested Pensacola. But I'm open for other recommendations.

There is a public boat ramp under the bridge on Highway 59 by Lulu Buffets place that will put you in the ICW. It is accessible to motels north of the ICW to Foley. I know there is a Microtel near the bridge so I checked availability and it was booked solid through Labor day. Also there is a Marriot Courtyard close by but it is also booked. Pensacola may be your best shoot for a July get together.

Hey guys, still don't know exactly what we'll be doing and where we'll be doing it, but we anticipate that we will participate. It's looking like a day trip for us rather than an overnight trip, so the big question will be whether we keep the Revenge afloat and motor her over under her own power or we yank her and trailer her. Among other factors, the weather will have everything to say about that.

If this is coming together July 22 for the Pirate's Cove/Lulu's/Perdido part of the world as discussed, it sounds like there might be interest in doing one farther to the east (Panama City, etc.) in the near future. What say y'all?

I think July 22 is set
I would think 10 am at the latest
The place is still undecided.
I think we do need someone to sorta make a plan so we don't just end up standing around on some sand bar pawing the sand and drinking beer all day, unless the plan IS to stand around all day in the sand drinking beer.

To help with the plan our party will consist of:
2 adults
the 17 or the 21
we can bring a tent and a grill
day trip for us

We are going to try to bring a few more boats from our area.

Mike Brantley posted 07-06-2006 06:32 PM ET (US)     Profile for Mike Brantley  Send Email to Mike Brantley
We will be two adults and one 3-year-old girl, the namesake of our boat, Sweet Samantha. Hail us as such on Channel 16, and we'll answer. As well, I'll have my cell phone on board (251-404-9947 -- e-mail me yours if you want me to have it and don't want to publish it online).

The old girl is a 22-foot Revenge, and we'll either come by boat or launch at our favorite local ramp at Josephine Park, which is very close to Pirate's Cove. Coming by boat will depend on weather and our inclinations on the matter. Where do y'all want to meet by 10 a.m.? The beach at Pirate's Cove? From there we can go many places, though I have not boated over there since the hurricanes stirred things up.

I think this will have to be a day trip for us, as we've made no plans for overnight accomodations. Maybe we will stay overnight in the early fall if there is interest in a similar get-together farther east, as mentioned above.

I made (well, altered) a map for our 2003 get-together, and it's on this page...

And I have photos from the last three years here...

Anybody else in? I'm getting the feeling this might be a rather low-key affair this time, which need not be a bad thing, I don't suppose -- although we hope to see plenty of old friends and new ones and some boats! If there's only a few of us, it'd certainly be easier to go to some place like Lulu's where space to tie up might be at a premium.

Cheryl wants to check out the new shopping/dining/marina facilities that have recently opened on the ICW in Orange Beach called The Wharf. The Web site indicates they welcome boaters to come for an hour or the whole day. Here's their Web site... http://www.thewharfal.com/marina.asp

Certainly there are plenty of places, too, to beach the boats and get sand between your toes.

Here's the Lulu's site... http://www.lulusathomeport.com/main/index.php

And this was the Pirate's Cove site, but there doesn't seem to be anything there this mornign (perhaps temporary problems)... http://www.piratescoveriffraff.com/

We are in. I'll bring the 17 Eastport and hope to have the boy's 13 ready.
The Wharf is open and will be really neat. They only have a small portion of the shops open now. We can go to a movie by boat quicker than driving, now that is really cool.
I'm hoping a closed transom shows up. I need to study one to see where the parts all go on our new 22 project.

Hey, Mike. Our 22 transom is as open as they come, although we gave some serious consideration to pursuing a Revenge 22 WT that was for sale in Georgia a couple of years ago. It had a closed transom with an old OMC Sea Drive on it. I wonder if someone bought it. That boat was for sale on Boat Trader Online for a long time.

Looking forward to meeting you and the Eastport.

Change of plans again. My fishing partner has to go out of town for his company this weekend. My boss said he needs me Friday as one person is still on vacation. So I'm not gonna enter the ADSFR this weekend.
So myself and my dog Blaze will get to hang with the CW'ers this Saturday.Either way I'm gonna be on the water enjoying "WEE WILLIE".

See ya'll there

Cool, we've reached some kind of critical mass! We look forward to seeing y'all on Saturday. We're going to try to arrive early and stay until everyone has left so no one will have to witness the horrific spectacle of Mike and Cheryl launching and retrieving their boat. Three Stoogery it is, I tell you. (I'm installing some extra-tall guide posts tonight that hopefully will improve this.)

Good to see everybody yesterday. The pictures are here...

http://www.thevideojunkie.com/whalerville/whalerrendezvous.html

I used a program called Aperture, which is what I use to catalog my digital picutres, to make the pages. It was a quick job, and I didn't intend to display shutter speed and such data with each picture, as Aperture has done, but I will fix that later.

The last couple of shots are at the new public marina at The Wharf. Very nice setup there. The adjacent shopping/dining/condo facilities are still a work in progress, but Sam enjoyed riding the Ferris wheel they have there.

My favorite part of the rendezvous was watching Mike and Jana's kids drive up in their own Whaler. Reminded me of the Boston Whaler advertisements of old!

Great pitures Mike B.
It was nice meeting everyone who came.

"Flipper" came instantly to my mind when I saw the other Mike's two blond headed boys pull up to the beach in the 13' Whaler. They then proceeded to dive(Flips) off the top of motor on Mike's Hawaian Eastport.

Till the next one.

Nice photos, wish we could have met the new folks, and oh yeah the old folks. The Brantley's Revenge looks great. Thank goodness ya'll saved it from Katrina. Jim

Thanks, Jim. We missed you and your wife this time. That place in Pass Christian where you went to look at the Revenge with us prior to our purchase of it... what was it called? Pelican something. I am assuming due to its location that it did not fare well with Katrina, nor any of the boats there. But I don't know for sure. Is Breath's up and running yet? I recall the fellow from Breath's who brought the new Outrage to the Horn Island rendezvous last year being a friendly fellow, and that was the dealership where somebody first bought my boat back in 1980.

I'd love to know who owned it then, but I worry the dealership records may not have done well with the hurricane. It'd be awesome if the first owner still had some photos of the boat, or at least some memories to share. The Revenge was rather sad-looking, as you recall, by 2004 and, presumably, having changed hands a few times.

Jeff and I were worried that either one of us or you had the storm curse attached to us, but no hurricane followed the Pirate's Cove rendezvous this time. Jeff figures it's you, then, but I won't go that far! It could be a numbers thing. We had fewer Whalerites show up this time, so maybe we were less of a temptation for Poseidon!

Mike, That marina and storage are gone and nothing left around that point, the bridge is being rebuilt too. There are boats still out in the woods and marsh. The Revenge is a lucky boat.

Breath's is up and running again, they were wiped out. Jim is still working there too, talked to him the other day. Jim

Man, oh, man. The destruction to people, property and the environment continues to awe and sadden. Please forgive my levity above on the subject of hurricanes. Anyway, hope to see all of you sometime, somewhere soon.

Mike, not a problem, I'm pretty sure now that it is me that is bad karma on Rendezvous. We missed being there. Jim

Hurricanes and Karma, perhaps it is me!

Let's slow down a little with this who causes the hurricanes to follow the northern gulf whalers stuff.

While Ivan hit within days ( could be knot at work) Katrina was more of a delayed reaction.

I would suspect that all this increase in hurricane activity is being caused by democrates as just another way to make Bush look bad.
