Due to rain and flooding, we are rescheduling the May 21 Piscat River gathering.

New suggested dates are Saturday June 17 or Sunday the 18th.

Please give me your preferences.

Thanks

Phil

The 17th works great for me. I could probably push my Ohio return back a day and make the 18th work too if need be.

Shame about the 21st, I was really looking forward to it. Glad that all of you local guys seemed to fare well in the recent storms. Lowell took a bit of a hit, but luckilly I'm on top of a hill, so apart from water in the basement we stayed dry.

The 17th would work for me. The 18th is fathers day and I'd most likely be on the water anyway, but the girls usually like to do something special that day, so they'd probably prefer to stay local on the Cape rather than a 2 hour trailer/truck ride up to NH. As usual though I'll side with the majority on this one.

I'm going out on the 21st anyway. I just came back from using the new dock/ramp at Peirce island launch. Very nice! I went into the Picataqua, as did a few other boats. The weather was not to my liking so I did the back channel thing. I think the area around Eliot ramp should be fine but I can't confirm that having not been up there myself. I'm pretty sure Dover is out of the question as would be trips up any of the rivers that feed into Great Bay.

I spoke with David Stevenson with York Harbor Marine today. He wanted me to communicate to the crew that he would be interested in hosting the rescheduled rendezvous at York Harbor Marine. He asked that the rendezvous organizer give him a call at the marina to work out the details. They have a nice restaurant up there he mentioned.

Phil, would that be you he'd want to hear from?

Well, I checked out the Eliot ramp. The tide was incoming but it appeared to be a strong outgoing with the current of the fresh flood water still in effect.
Nice view of the oil depot BTW. I especially loved the oil slick I had to clean off my new Whaler when I got home. Yeah, that's a beautiful place to launch all right. Good call. I couldn't help but noticed even the good tax paying citizens of Eliot had to dish out some cash to use the ramp, albeit a lesser amount than an out of Towner. As if this wasn't enough to make me feel welcomed over the bridge a group of twenty somethings uttered the word 'a#$%hole' after I greeted them as kindly as I was raised to do. I hope they weren't referring to me. Last I looked in the mirror I didn't look like one. I even asked my wife and she would know.

I'll be launching at Peirce Island from now on. It's free (for residents) and the ramp has been revamped with fresh concrete and a nice little dock. I found the incline to be much more gradual and clear of debris than the Eliot ramp. (to be fare Eliot may be cluttered with flood debris that we were spared down stream). As for the current...let's hope that keeps the a%$holes away. Oh wait, that's me!

Greatbay- If the crew wants to take David up on his offer than I will be more then happy to contact him and dicuss some details with him. If we do take him up on his offer my boat won't even get to leave its slip!

Go for it! He did mention you as a someone he knew personally and had spoke with before regarding this event if I'm not mistaken. That might work out great.

Thank you!

I am assuming that the marina we were going to stop at and eat is no longer a possibility due to damage and our date now being in June. Anybody know this for a fact?

Is it the sense of the group that we redo the itinerary in such a way as to end up at York for lunch or do we want to stay on the Piscat?

Maybe start at Eliot, go down river and to York for lunch. After lunch, we could go up the York river (Kyle is this interesting/fun to do for visitors?

What sounds interesting to you guys.

P.S. If we go up to York, I don't mind Kyle being the point person one bit.

YorkHarbor posted 05-21-2006 11:53 PM ET (US)     Profile for YorkHarbor  Send Email to YorkHarbor
Phil- The York riveris very scenic, however there is a bridge about a mile up the river that is too low for our boat to fit under except for at low tide. Considering there will probably be some bigger boats coming it is probably not a good idea. However maybe we could have lunch at York Harbor and then cruise out to Boon Island lightouse and then over to Nubble Light.

The mouth of the Piscat is only 20 minutes away. I cruised from YHM to Great Bay in April with no problems.

I'm up for anything. If we have some dealer participation, then all the better. I just hope that this Memorial Day weekend brings good weather and clear rivers. I haven't even splashed the boat yet!

I agree. David was supposed to get me a $50 Gift Certificate to that restaurant in York Harbor as part of the "thanks for buying a Whaler here" deal. If I get it I'll share the wealth with my new Whaler buddies.

Dave's chompin' at the bit to host this pow-wow. Has anyone contacted him? He said the weekend of the 17th is good for him.

Off topic:
Who has the Whaler named "Luna-Sea"?

Phil/GreatBay- I left Dave a voicemail the middle of last week and he just today had time to call me back. It is a very busy time for them, and I will return his call tomorrow as they were closed when I got his voicemail today. Lets plan on the 17th for now, and hopefully I can get ahold of Dave tomorrow and hammer out some details. Stay posted!

I talked to Dave this morning, and it looks as thought June 25 is going to work best for us. York Harbor Marine is having a in water demo day on Saturday the 24th, and they will still have most of these boats in the water and available on the 25th. We also discussed either having from the restaurant or grilling out at the Marine service. Please give me your inputs!
YorkHarbor posted 06-08-2006 03:42 PM ET (US)     Profile for YorkHarbor  Send Email to YorkHarbor
Disregard my last post! I have talked to Dave again and he cannot do the 25th, however he says he can make the 17th work. So lets plan on Saturday the 17th, we will head to YHM and raft up and grill out. He has also offered to splash some new Whalers for test rides for our enjoyment. After I would be glad to lead everyone out to Boone Island Lighthouse and then over to Cape Neddick light. What time do you guys want to meet up? I will let you guys set a time for meeting as my boat is already in York harbor. Maybe I can meet you all at the mouth of the Pist. and cruise back up with you? Sorry for the confusion.

My plan is to launch at Eliot since I am not familiar with the coast south of here. A 30 miles run down the coast by myself is a bit more than I want to chew before 10 a.m.

Plan to launch on the river at 8:30.

Want to meet at the outer bouy at 9:30?

Bueller?

I'm on deck at work that whole weekend. Plus it's Father's day weekend. I'm out.

Casco, you'd be driving past York to get to Eliot won't you? Sounds like you're over shooting the target a bit. Or am I missing something?

No can do next weekend. Too much youth soccer and baseball on the schedule.

There is no public ramp in York. The ramp in Wells, Maine would be the best bet.

The good news and the bad news.....The bad news first. Even though I suggested the 17th for this rendezvous we will not be able to make it. We are still in the process of moving to our new house and clearing out our old house of items that are not being moved. After living in one location for 40 years and 8 months one tends to accumulate quite a few things. Many of which a disposable.Plus our children hired a dumpster to be delivered for that weekend to use for the permanent disposable items. The good news.....I received another box of goodies from my friend down in Edgewater to be handed out at this rendezvous. I'll save it and hopefully remember to bring it to the next gathering. We hope all of you have a great time. See you at the next one.

Oh man, you guys are killing me.

I totally understand the reasons but I am dying due to being off the water (due to rain) and whaler talk withdrawl.

I will email the others and see where they stand.

We may need to reschedule again or should I just call it a lost cause and look forward to Sunapee in July?

P.S. Yorkharbor is now in Maine (lives in Ohio) and off-line so I will keep him informed.

I'm still on for Saturday the 17th. Anyone else? I've been working my weekends since Memorial day getting my condo in Lowell ready for sale and a day out whalerin' is just what I need about now. Weather for Sat. looks like mostly sunny and in the 70's for York Maine.

My plan is to trailer the 18 Outrage up from the Cape early on Saturday. Phil are you still planning on a launch at Elliot? I could meet you at the ramp. I haven't boated up that way before and I'm really looking forward to getting some Northern New England Water under the hull.

Could someone provide some coordinates or plans on the rendezvous meetup? I'd originally planned on meeting up at the ramp at Eliot, but now I see reading back that Wells, ME is the best? If anyone could provide some guidance it would be greatly appreciated. I haven't boated that area before and I'll be picking up a chart tomorrow, but it would be really good to get some local insight.

Directions to Eliot Ramp -

FROM THE SOUTH:

Coming from the South after crossing into Maine over the Million Dollar Bridge I take Exit 1 (To Rte 103). At the end of the ramp I go left for about 1/2 mile and turn right onto Rte 103. On Rte 103 go 2.4 miles to Hammond Lane on the left (just past Green Acres Conference Center). The boat ramp is at the end of Hammond Lane.

GPS coordinates for the ramp: N 43*06.962'
W 70*47.593'

Here is a yahoo map.

Phil, I will meet you at the outer buoy. It is #2 by the way. Is 10 O'clock alright? Dave is expecting us sometime after 11 so we can cruise the coast or whatever you guys wanna do for a while.

OK Phil, I'll see you at the Eliot Ramp by 8:30. Thanks for the directions. I plan to leave Cape Cod between 5:30 and 6 (once Dunkin's opens). Launch by 9 will give plenty of time to make our way down towards the mouth of the Piscat. to meet up with Kyle.

Kyle, Buoy #2, is that the Red 2 light SW of Wood Island or the Red 2KR whistle/light buoy further out and south of Kitts Rocks? (Yeah I just picked up the new chart today)

Grilling out at York Harbor Marine sounds good. I was just browsing their site and it looks like a nice place. Can't wait to see it 'live'. I'll throw some grillin stuff together for the cooler for Sat.

OK Kyle, thanks that's good to know. I thought I'd read from a previous post that you were meeting us at the Piscat and then motoring back up the coast to York. I'll meet up with Phil at Eliot and then head up with him to the #2 Buoy outside York Harbor. I'll keep a VHF watch on #9 and #16.

Brian, sorry to hear about Matthew. Hope you're able to find a miracle cure for Sat.

Well you guys missed a really REALLY great day.

Out of the 20 or so who planning on the May gathering, today it was my nephew and me and York Harbor (+2).

We had perfect weather, great scenery, and good seas.

Thank to David Stevenson and crew of York Harbor Marine for hosting us. He grilled up a great lunch and we had a good talk about whalers. To finish off the visit, we all took turns going out on a 150 Montauk and a 180 Dauntless with a 150 Verado. We appreciated the work Dave did despite only 2 boats attending.

Will post more on the sea trials in the Post-Classic section.

Well I'm really bummed!! My day Whalerin' ended up being just a long truck ride.

Phil, missed you at the ramp obviously, arrived about 9:30, prepped the boat and launched the 18 Outrage in that wicked current. I knew it was going to be strong, but with that outgoing tide I had no idea. Anyway, was motoring downriver towards the Rt. 1 bridge, just about to jump on plane and hopefully catch you guys at the #2 Buoy when the overheat alarm started blaring on the Johnson and RPM's dropped down to about 1500. Motor was still 'peeing' fine, oil was full and primer was firm, so we turned around and started limping back towards the Eliot ramp. Took about a half hour fighting that current and at that slow speed. Pop got the anchor ready just in case of a stall, and I made headway and got the mech at the boatworks on the cell phone. After describing the situation, he said it sounded like a bad thermostat or temp sensor and that the engine was self medicating by lowering RPMs and saving an overheat. We made it back to the ramp, and luckily by then, the tide had shifted and the current wasn't bad at all. Made loading back up pretty easy.

It was nice to get out on the Piscataqua, albeit briefly. We got a couple pictures around the boat ramp, I'll try to edit out the oil depot and post on photobucket. Also, met some interesting and friendly locals. Had a great chat at the ramp with 2 ladies from Maine Fish and Wildlife about how productive this years Striper bite has been.

Glad you all had a great time. Thanks for the pics Phil. I'm real sorry I missed it especially after that long drive from Cape Cod. I'll have to catch up with you next time.
~Matt

Sorry it took me so long to respond! I have worked 48 hours in 4 days. Considering the small turnout we had a great time! Phil and his nephew proved again that they are nothing short of a class act. We had a great time cruising up the river and then quite the bouncy ride out to Boon Island! Most of all York Harbor Marine service was amazing. Not only did they supply the grill, they also supplied food, beverage, brand new boats to drive, and a nice sunny day! Hosting this event made me realize that York Harbor Marine actually cares about their customers and their product's heritage. All together a great day and 10 gallons of gas later!
