OK, I'm finally back in the country, sort of. I'm in Jersey, which is sort of a waiting room for the INS. I'll be home tomorow and there for the next several weeks. Let's start with picking a weekend. This will be a weekend event and I have a no tell/motel picked out that will suit our needs. It's right on the river, has docks and a ramp, picnic area, etc. Details will follow after we set a date. I'm thinking between now and the end of September or early Oct. This one is destined to become a classic in the likes of Homosassa. It can also be a long weekend if you all want. There is that much to see and do. Since I live nearby and it was my idea, I will be point man for this event and am hoping that the Judge and Reelymine will pitch in too.

I say the weekend of the 23rd or 30th to give people a couple weeks to prepare and make sure we can get the rooms. What is the gameplan? Are we going to drop in at like Fanning springs and head up river? I really digged the springs near Rocky bluff to hang out at. Is this our 1st GCBWOA rendezvous since you are the Sgt of Arms?

This sounds like fun. Friday and Saturday night at the motel? 30th better with me.

Been wanting to go see this river for a while.

The 30th sounds OK to me. I'll finalize the research, gather the ammo, and we can pull the trigger on this one. Friday eve, Saturday, short ride on Sunday and then off to home sounds like the game plan.

Wife works so Friday is probably not good being I won't get there until 9:30 or so. Will probably shoot up sat morn. Give me buzz Frank when you get the time and find some ammo.

Thanks

Relax Len...Talked to Frank today and he is working on it. 30th is the date so everyone get prepared. We only have 2 weeks.

Hotel is either Swannee Gables which is on the water and has dockage or the Caddillac which is either by a ramp or has one but no dockage. Gables is nicer and more exp....I think about $75/night where Caddy is about $60. They are both located in Old Town.

I have just tried to find a hotel on the river from some of my friends in that area, and they did not know of a good hotel with boat ramp or dockspace. I guess the one near Fanning Springs has gone Condo. Where are the two hotels located.
My wife and I would like to go if we can make time arrangements.

I do get excited about trips. I can't wait to go, I love the Florida rivers that I seen.

Here is a link for the place on the waterfront it looks pretty good.

Ok guys, I have procrastinated long enough. I missed out on Stuart, should have gone to Beaufort so I am adamant on going to Suwanee. Made my reservations for 30th weekend.

If you are still on fence about 22nd, here is a key consideration...U of Florida has home game in nearby Gainessville on 22nd and most hotels are already booked, not to mention traffic on roads.

Hope you finalize for 30th and my family will be there!

The weekend of the 30th it is. The hotel/motel is the Suwannee Gable as Nick posted already. They have a ramp and docks. If the ramp sucks, the public ramp is just downstream and very good. The river is low, but not too low that I can't run the Outrage with a little knowledge. A thorough briefing will take place and I will be on hand to lead the way. I will start posting some info on things to do and see and some pics too. I will also try to get out on the river to GPS some of the shallow spots and how to navigate them. We pretty much can run the river from Branford and above on down to the Gulf if desired. Plan on swimming in the springs, diving if you want, skiing if your body can take it, there are also a couple of bars on the water if we need refreshments.

Wife and I are leaving Bradenton with the refitted 15' being towed in the morning Friday. Also have reservations @ Suwannee Gables Motel & Marina for Friday and Saturday nights.

Some fishing, diving equipment will be aboard along with other accoutrements for fun.

With regards to the "marina" at Suannee Gables. The ramp is adequate. The docks are floating and not the greatest in the world. They get beat up from the floods and river traffic. Bring plenty of fenders and a spare beach anchor if you have one to keep off the dock edge.

FNO - Do you think a Conquest 21 is too big for this stretch of river?
The Judge posted 09-13-2006 03:09 PM ET (US)     Profile for The Judge  Send Email to The Judge
He is bringing his 21 outrage which is the same hull. iF you have a smaller whaler, it is all you need. I am bringing my 13' and although she may be slow, it is not too small on this river. Only problem in 13' is wakes, river itself is calm, even in a rain squall ;)
fno posted 09-13-2006 06:34 PM ET (US)     Profile for fno  Send Email to fno
Bring the Conquest, I'd like to ride in it. I'm gonna GPS the shallow areas before the weekend. It is possible to go around them or slowly thru them with the motors trimmed up.

Jim, get off that radio (nobody's out there) and get to work on the motor. It's not the Gators you need to worry about it's the Sturgeon. They have put more people in the hospital than the Gators this year.

Yes, you are correct. There are some very large fish jumping out of the water. We saw them and appreciate your advise.

I am about 1.5 hours away from the Suwannee and may try to tow the Whaler up there on Fri. and spend the night in the hotel or drive there on Sat. for the get together.

I am refinishing the transom after removing an engine and entension/platform. lots of holes to fill. Still need to prime and paint. Hope to have most of the job done tomorrow.

Thanks

Jim

I am heading out to the river today. A cruise to GPS the low spots, also the Springs and Park. I will make a list of the numbers and send them out as well. And a light lunch of Italian sausage from NJ too. Looks like our group is growing every day. That's great. I hope everyone is getting a room at the Gables.

I'll send the map again tonight when I have a high speed connection. I'm off to Texas for the week. I'm gonna start a new topic to get a list of attendees going. Just the facts: Who you are, How many, When will you be here, Cell if you want directions, etc. I hope everyone is getting a room at the Gables that needs one.
fno posted 09-19-2006 02:36 PM ET (US)     Profile for fno  Send Email to fno
I got out on the river this past Sunday. Launched in Fanning Spgs. at the county ramp. We went down to Manatee Springs State Park and then back up to Rock Bluff spring. The river below Fanning runs 8-15' deep so no hazards there. On the way upstream there are a few shallow areas of 2-3" I GPS'd them and will make a list. I also noted some travel distances from the Gables. The Suwannee Gables ramp is OK for smaller boats (17' or less)and the dock is in good shape. I did not speak to them, but will next weekend when I go back out on the river. As far as I know there really is no gas on the river till you get all the way down to Suwannee on the Gulf. There are plenty of gas stations in Fanning Springs to fill up though.

Let me know what the Friday people would like to do. If you are familiar with the river, no problem. I will be on hand anyway if anyone wants a tour on Friday, jsut let me know. Saturday is wide open. Nick suggested meeting at 10:00 a.m. Lunch is DIY. Let's plan for a cookout at the Gables on Saturday night. I will check out their grills beforehand. I am going to bring the fryer too. Maybe to boil shrimp, maybe to fry fish, not sure yet. A

About those Sturgeons. I finally got around to reading Sundays Florida Times Union this morning and there was an article about two people seriously injured when they hit a piling while tring to avoid a jumping Sturgeon. Seems he was doing 40mph when this beast jumped in front of him. So watch your speed, wear your life jackets and be safe.

Or slow the hell down when going under a bridge.
fno posted 09-20-2006 07:27 PM ET (US)     Profile for fno  Send Email to fno
This incident appears to be another act of Darwinism. On one hand a sturgeon appears in ones path. Kinda like that deer in the headlights. Now keep in mind that this was probably a nice sunny day on the river. Now comes the bridge abutment. Solid concrete is this dudes other choice. Abutment....Sturgeon, Abutment....Sturgeon, Abutment....Sturgeon,Abutment...... I laughed my ass off when I read this. My evil master plan of eliminating jet skis from the river is going well. Training of the Sturgeon to jump in front of jet skis is years in the making. It is still a work in progress as not all of the Sturgeon know what a jet ski looks or sounds like. I may bring some of my evil creatures up to the Chicago river to train with those funky Chinese carp that are jumping right and left into boats. Maybe those carp know something about the water up there that we don't.

By the way, why would one choose the ditch and rolling the ride over killing Bambi. It's not like you can take the ditch home, cut it up, eat some and freeze the rest. Can you? Either way you screw up your vehicle, so get some meat!!!
The Judge posted 09-21-2006 12:17 PM ET (US)     Profile for The Judge  Send Email to The Judge
Frank...let's start making Sturgeon rails/nets so that they can not get in the boat or at least are slowed down to nothing. We could retire early, I have a concept model.
fno posted 09-21-2006 02:38 PM ET (US)     Profile for fno  Send Email to fno
They are only supposed to jump high enough to clear the handlebars on those jet skis. They are big though. We saw three or four last weekend. Maybe we can start a caviar business. You can write the lable on the tin in Greek. It will look more Russian.

fno posted 09-21-2006 06:14 PM ET (US)     Profile for fno  Send Email to fno
Kids are welcome, although as someone has already stated the evenings will be adult oriented. This will include adult beverages, heart stopping BBQ, cigars, etc. There will be a teenager(Reelymine) or two (Judge) running their own boats also.
The Judge posted 09-22-2006 12:40 PM ET (US)     Profile for The Judge  Send Email to The Judge
We have had a few teenagers attend our rendezvous. Kids or teenagers are not a problem for ANY of the day trips but the night time activities are adult oriented and can get pretty "raunchy" at times. Most teenagers that attend prefer watching TV then hanging with us old folks. If you really meant "kids" I hope they go to bed early ;)
Mambo Minnow posted 09-22-2006 06:57 PM ET (US)     Profile for Mambo Minnow
Kids will likely go to bed early after a day in the sun and water. Whaler marketing caters to families for a reason. We're in it mostly for the experience seeing a new part of FL and talking shop with fellow Whaler afficionados. Rest sounds like fun but more for the Sea Ray Club (ha!)

Started a long time ago and never got the licence. Have all the equipment. And have gone diving so much never ran into a situation that I needed the ticket but I thought I saw on the website that you must be licenced and they charge ten dollars a day to dive there.

Thanks

No I am not working that day.

Michelle is throwing a bridal shower for her sister saturday.

My parents are packing up their house to put up for sale and gotta help them. (pretty lame excuse huh?)

Brentley's adoption court date is that week also..finally!

If Brentley and I decide last minute to drive up saturday for the day, we will let you know-might bum a boat ride if we don't bring mine.

If we miss you guys, have a great time and we'll make the next one!

You aren't going to a bridal shower are you????? Your parents can pack their own stuff and move without you. I bet they didn't tell you where they are moving to yet, didn't they? If the court date comes through you will have something to celebrate won't you? Don't make me use the P word on the internet. Just show up will ya.....

Bring the Vette! Did you get any money from the house sale? If not, let him use that to clean his OWN friggin gutters. Man you leave the house after college and they still expect you to mow the lawn 10 years later. Next time you wax the boat or paint the house, he better show up. you now have this trip that you missed(again) to dangle as sympathy bait.

Mambo...kids are cool, just wanted you to be WARNED ;) No SeaPig stuff here, does anyone have a galley or an I/O?

Frank, not bringing my dive crap either even though my boat has SOOOOO much extra space in it since I removed the galley.

I am waiting for Frank to tell me the cooking deal at the hotel sometime today. If cool, I will bring up some crabs and maybe a rack of ribs. If no picnic area, there is a family style buffet place down the road as well called the Homestead. Not bad and can seat a big crowd. Not too many other options which you will realize when you get there. Old Town aint no metropolis, glad they have a gas station.

I vote for just going to the buffet place to EAT, then we can come back to the hotel at night and munch on chips, dips, Coronas, and other good stuff.

Of course, if you want to cook, I'll be happy to eat.

Len, you aren't in South Florida anymore.... You are going to be hungry and thirsty. Pick up some hot dogs and buns, I'll bring my grill this afternoon. Thirsty is something I hope to not be this weekend.....

Pat, I lost your cell # with my last phone. Email me your number. So am I to assume that you are coming up for the weekend?

We are leaving with in the half hour. See ya this afternoon.

Good luck calling Frank or should I say good luck getting a return call ;)

Threats work and so do curse words I guess.

Talked to Frank...we are eating at hotel, sorry Ace. So get some food and let's grill. I am bringing some blue crabs and a rack of ribs.

What are we doing for lunch. I assume we are grilling on shore some place so I will pick up eats as well for that sat morning. Don't forget to bring extra grub for King Ubu, he loves to mooch.

Well, after a non-eventful trip, we got back to Summerville about 7:30. Great not to have to flush the engine for a change.

We had a great time! Thanks, Frank, for putting this together. I did not get the message about cooking at the hotel because we were already on our way.

After looking at the pictures, I have decided to change my name from WhalerAce to FatAssAce. If ever I needed motivation to go on a diet, Len's pictures are it.

What a great river to ride on. Thanks again for everyone that showed up making such a great group of people to hang out with.

Thanks to FNO for putting together, we had a great time. Ace, many thanks again for your company and assistance - you are a true gentleman! Michelle and the kids enjoyed the natural beauty of the Suwannee.

Well it was a treat to meet new people instead of the same old people THAT DON'T SHOW UP! Had a great time, ass still hurts from the 70+ mile trip on saturday, plus the 4 I spent in the car. Next time we will hit Fanning Springs, we can get Baptised while we party. No sturgeons came over my bow but that SeaRay wake was a doozie. Wife's contact rolled back the next morning so all is good. Food was great and we had enough for 6 more people. If you would have told us you were going to dinner Ace, we would have stopped you...PLENTY of leftovers even after the dogs ate.

Few things to mention when going on the Suwanee w/boat:
1) bring plenty of fuel, no gas docks.
2) bring plenty to eat and drink, no food places or stores either on the water.
3) bring your dog to piss of the local(s), real fun.
4) do NOT stay at the Suwannee Gables unless you have plenty of $10 bills.
5) Do eat at the Suwannee Gables restaurant, can't spend a $10 bill between 2 people for breakfast.
6) great place to get blasted, smoke some stuff, and spread your buddy's ashes.

Best part of the trip was the look on the owners face when he came down to the dock and saw what a great job WhalerAce did cleaning up his pontoon boat.

PS...no need to bring your Lynyrd Skynyrd tapes either, trust me.

Next big trip is Homasassa if Janice does not do the St John's one. I think we need a Shell Key/Beercan run in late fall as well.

As already said, it was a great weekend. 70 plus miles of river in one day. Lots of great food and drink and some new and some old friends to hang with. We also got to see up close some real speed boats as the Scream and fly crowd had a get together this weekend also. I know for sure some of our speed freaks would have been drooling this weekend over the cats with the black Wisconsin speed machines on them. Oh and there were a few white motors there too, but definitely a minority. Nick forgot to mention the 16 year old pregnant(8 1/2 mos.) girl in a bikini top and Florida State Seminoles shorts swimming at Fanning Springs. It was Redneck heaven this weekend and we got to see it up close. I am working on a narrative today, maybe Jimh. will publish this one.

She was HOT and at least you won't have to worry about knocking her up. Loved that bright orange crew cut too.

My dog is STILL wiped out from saturday. Has been sleeping for 2 days now(a blessing).

I was amazed at how tame those guys were driving. I mean they had their moments but for the most part they were barely doing 40mph. Some slick pickelforks but TOTALLY useless. Len kept trying to race them but I think their plugs would foul at his speeds.

Let's start a new thread: "Suwannee river...which is better, a 17' STV pickelfork with 300XS or 17' Montauk?"

Thread #2

Sturgeon or Manatee? Which does more damage and which one tastes better?

Thread #3

Seminoles VS Gators? Lynyrd Skynyrd or Molly Hatchet? S&W .357mag or Ruger Blackhawk?

If you guys are really sticking to your "70 miles" story, I am really impressed with:
a) the fuel economy of my 70 HP TWO STROKE Yamaha
b) how much cushion my fatass really has in it
c) how fast the time flew doing those miles
d) how much fun it was the whole day
e) how much water can come out of one little hole

Looking forward to the next trip. St Johns or Homasassa, it doesn't matter.

Great meeting new friends and talking about the old ones that didn't show up.

We really need to get a roster for everyone to sign, because I could not get all of the real names to screen names. However, I gotta say, with kids (at my age I can say that) like "Reely Mine" and his friends and brother (Ryan?) America does have a bright future. Too much bad press goes to the few kids who cause trouble, but here are some boys that are well mannered, show respect for their elders (like me), are fun to talk to, and just "reely" sharp. It was a pleasure meeting them. I hope to see them again on future trips.

Now all that's left is to rewash and wax the Suburban and get another ten pounds of "love bugs" off the windshield, grill and hood.

Enjoyed every minute! Thanks again!

Ace, it reely was 70 miles of travel. Rhett left me a message on Saturday night with his GPS readings. Him and his brother are reely good kids. Glad you had a good time too. You woulda had more time to trash our old timers that didn't show up if you hadn't gone out to dinner. And it was really nice of you to wash that pontoon boat for the hotel owners. Did you run the bilge pump for them too.....?

Nice pictures Len! Perhaps JimH will post to the
"other Rendevous" site area, so they will be easily accessible once this thread is outdated. That "Rendevous" section is getting a little dated.

Although not disappointed I am not thrilled with the 10-12mpg I averaged in the 13 w/40. She burns the same as my 70 4 stroke on a 17'. Does not matter being it is only a dingy that will probably NEVER see that kind of running again, esoecially if my wife has something to do with it.

Next time I will ride with Frank and let Ace stay at the dock and clean my boat and run my bilge pump for me.

It was a great trip and now the culture shock of Juarez, Mexico. The lack of humidity is killing me here.

Wish I was home, glad you all enjoyed the pics.

Be back on the weekend, Beercan Sunday?

See some of you soon.

Yeah, How about it?

I am going to sunny Fort Drum, New York Oct 13-21 and even sunnier San Antonio, TX Dec 01-11. Other than that, pick any sunny weekend. This will be like a two-day trip, right?

And I didn't get any goodies. (Apparently I was too busy washing boats to get in on that part).

And Janis, I need to talk to you about some decals, too. Look for separate correspondence.

Thanks,

--Ace
