My '85 Montauk and I have been thinking about getting some other Whaler owners together for a day on the bay, or something. Anyone who is interested can email me.

I have no specific date or activity in mind and am open to any ideas. I have found 3 interested parties so far.

Thanks!

I am interested, but my boat is still in Lake Havasu, Arizona until about November/December when I intend to haul it back to Walnut, in East Los Angeles County, not quite close in San Diego, but I don't mind driving down there.

Hope it'll be that time frame when you're having the rendezvous. I'll keep watching for more details...
(Jimh will probably move this to the trip/rendezvous section).

Hey ST- email me so that if this is moved or we plan something a few weeks out, I have a way to reach you.

Since it is NOT YET a rendevous, I hope it stays here to reach more people. For those of us who have been here for a shorter period of time (a year or so), figuring out "what links are for what topic" has been a bit challenging. Naively, I thought of "rendevous" as an established annual event somewhere.

Hope to hear from you. You make 6 now who have responded.

Hi everyone-

Let me say, first of all, I am really excited about the response here, as well as email I have rec'd through CW. I would encourage all of you here who have NOT emailed me to do so now, so that I can keep track of you as we plan this.

I have over a dozen responses in the past few days ranging from 13-22 footers from San Diego to AZ to regions outside LA.

I am happy to coordinate what we do, schedule logistics, bring the food, etc. but would like some guidance-

Several are 17 Montauks, in addition to the 13 footer, plus some bigger boats. Does someone want to recommend a location that can accomodate this diversity?

Have any of you rendevous'd in San Diego before and know of a good location?

All input graciously received. Sheila, did you sell your bigger boat? Have a neighbor potentially interested if still avail.

thanks!

We could do Mission Bay or San Diego Harbor. I havnt gone out of the South Bay personally but I have heard that launching down at the Chula Vista Marina is a very nice with a lot less boat traffic south of the Coronado Bridge. Of course doing a bbq in the Glorita Bay area is always nice too...and very accessable from the South Bay.
montauk steve posted 09-27-2006 10:59 AM ET (US)     Profile for montauk steve  Send Email to montauk steve
Glorietta has a ramp there as well as an area to pinic, bbq, and wash down for boats!

depending on the day... i have had to park a few times on the street.

I think there are about 16-20 spots to park.

south of the bridge has light traffic. any farther south like 24th street to j street is suppose to be 5mph zone only. and of course upper bay around N island has good traffic, from carriers to navy tugs and the Hornblowers &%(#@)# creating GINORMOUS wakes.

Raaaaay posted 09-27-2006 02:21 PM ET (US)     Profile for Raaaaay  Send Email to Raaaaay
Steve, I didnt know that south of 24th street was all no wake zone.

But, launching at Coronado is still good.

I just get tired of Mission Bay being so crowded, but pretty soon as the weather cools down a little the traffic should be lighter there too.

My little 13 gets bounced around quite a bit with the choppy water on Mission Bay, and the big wakes on the main part of San Diego Harbor, but..hey...its a whaler..so, I am up for just about anything.

chesapeakecharlie posted 09-27-2006 07:36 PM ET (US)     Profile for chesapeakecharlie  Send Email to chesapeakecharlie
Launching from South Shores ramp in Mission Bay is normally pretty stress free---far, far less traffic than the Shelter Island ramp, especially on weekends. There is tons of parking available and quite a few picnic tables. The only down side is that there is quite a long no wake zone you have to get through before you can get outside the jetty, but for the purpose of having this kind of meeting, I think it might be a pretty optimal launch site...
blackdog54 posted 09-28-2006 10:39 AM ET (US)     Profile for blackdog54  Send Email to blackdog54
Here are some dates for everyone to kick around, these are all Sundays:

Oct. 15
Oct. 22
Nov. 12

What do you think of Mariner's Point/Bonita Cove on Mission Bay?

The other alternative would be the cove down by the Coronado yacht club but that would require launching from Shelter Island (let's keep the smaller boats in mind) or Glorietta (limited parking and smaller ramp) and may be a bit smaller for our traffic.

I am thinking mid-day. What about food and the like?

Linda, for the NorCal Rendezvous, people brought their own stuff for the grill and beverages. Everyone brought a side dish to share. One volunteer provided the paper plates and utensils, if I recall. That worked well.

I like South Shores--but I won't even be there unless somebody is willing to pick up a hitchhiker :)

I think those interested should email Linda (or any volunteer) with his/her date preference, that way Linda and everyone here will have idea what the date is going to be; I guess it'll be a majority rules (?).

Then, we could discuss a more detail plans, like, the meeting place/time, the boating/fishing (?) aspect, the picnicking place etc. right here in this forum.

Thanks to Sheila for sharing her Norcal rendezvous experience to the table for our consideration, if it worked well up there, lets just use it.

I am emailing Linda now with my preference date; let's continue talking here...

Unrelated to our plans but thought I would post it here, as it affects anyone who trailers to the San Diego bay. This is from Boat US regarding the Shelter Island Launch ramp:

September 29, 2006

Dear BoatU.S. Member,

Next Monday, the Port of San Diego is hosting an informational meeting on the refurbishment and proposed temporary closure of the Shelter Island Launch Ramp. If you are a trailerboater, you may want to attend this meeting to hear details of their plans and timing for the proposed closure. At this time, the general public will have an opportunity to offer input.

Current refurbishment plans include repositioning of the existing dock, excavating the basin floor to increase depth, and construction of a cut-off wall to allow excavation and water area to the west side of the basin. In addition, a new 8 foot wide floating dock and concrete ramp will be built.

The meeting will be in the Training Room of the Port's Administration Building, 3165 Pacific Highway, San Diego, at 6 pm on Monday, October 2. To read the full news release, Click here (PDF version): http://www.portofsandiego.org/sandiego_about/PressReleases/releases/20060922-PR-001.pdf

Please feel free to pass this along to other area boaters, or your boat or fishing club. Thanks!

Shouldn't this move to Trips and Rendezvous?

Having been involved in all of the NorCal events:

Delegate, delegate, delegate.

For the NorCal Rendezvous, one person's "side dish" was
plates and silverware. Another's was charcoal and lighter.
And two fellows brought ready-to-cook-caught-the-day-before
salmon and left before dinner! YUM! ;-)

For SD, a sun awning for eating would be good.

Make a roster of boats and folks to hand out. Have a
preplanned working freq. Folks either sat on the working
freq, or scanned it, so we didn't need to go through Ch. 16,
just: "Whalers: Great Blue Heron to starboard."

Let the slowest boat lead.

Annoint a tail-end-charlie to keep track of who's behind the
group.

Linda-

I read your quoted post when you made it. My confusion is that when I read the heading under the Rendezvous section it seems really clear to me that discussions about potential rendezvous belong there, not here.

[QUOTE}ContinuousWave: Trips and Rendezvous

Reports of Trips taken. Ideas and suggestions for rallies or rendezvous for Boston Whaler owners.{/QUOTE]

I'm sorry you took the offense at my comment that you apparently did. Please take my comment as a helpful hint. I think (maybe I'm wrong?) that when people are looking for comments about plannning a rendezvous, they look in the Rendezvous section. Only JimH can move a thread from one area to another, but you can start a new thread in the Rendezvous section and make reference to it here in the event anyone gets lost on the curve.

Kingfish, appreciate your clarification. For some/many of us, we stumble onto the site via a single link. You can be unaware of the site's depth, depending on how you ended up there in the 1st place (ie: via some Google'd thread, like me). I had been in here about 9 mos. before I realized that there was anything more than the "for sale" area. It was then that I started "living" in "electrical" and "mods".

Some of us are greener. We are all just finding our way and trying to fit in and contribute. Personally, I have found SO MANY great resources here, it is amazing. I think it is a testament to the caliber of folks who own Whalers.

I love this place.

UPDATE-

OK I got a few responses in email which indicated preferred dates for a meet up. They all preferred different dates. Realizing that:
1) We will never accomodate all preferences on a single date
2) Some people might come who have not responded
3) Some will miss this one but attend the next
4) Its best to keep it simple

I would like to propose the following (involves some spontaneity):

A meet up on Sat. Nov. 4th, 12 noon in Mariner's Point/Bonita Cove in Mission Bay. This will allow us to accomodate smaller boats and we can beach or tie up en masse.

We can have pizza delivered and it will be $7 a head (which will cover delivery tip). BYOB. You must confirm regarding food by Wed. Nov. 1. Please RSVP on food via email. I can bring necessities like paper plates, garbage bags, etc. Things like ice, coolers, etc.-- to each his own.

I don't really know what happens at a meet up/rendevous, so if you have suggestions that require some planning, send them to me via email now.

If this works out, we can always expand and BBQ (or whatever) at the next one or move it to the SD bay somewhere.

Are you in? I hope so. Let me know.

OK- status:

So far, we have 6 boats and 13 attendees confirmed. We have 2 "maybe's" who will be out on the H20 for other reasons and may stop by. We have 3 "no response" yet. We have 5 "No can do's".

Please let me know if you want me to:
1) order pizza for you
2) count that you are bringing your own food.

I will bring plates, garbage bags, knapkins, etc. You need to bring your beverages and everything assoc. with them.

We will meet in Mariners cove at 12 noon on Sat. Nov. 4th. The closest launches are Dana landing and South Shores, I guess. We can meet, greet and eat and then perhaps, go out for a spin on the bay.

I will get there a bit earlier and you can look for my Montauk just inside of Mariners Point heading toward Bonita Cove.

Thanks for all of your replies and interest.

Hey Gary-

The great thing about Mission Bay is that there are nearly a half a dozen launches. There are 3 that I would consider:

De Anza cove- ample parking, takes you almost immediately into open throttle zone and out of the 5 mph. Downside- lots of jetskis who don't seem to know a lot of boating etiquette. It is located just below # 4 on the attached map link.

http://www.sandiego.gov/park-and-recreation/parks/missionbay/facilities.shtml

South Shores- newest launch, LOTS of dock tie up space, lots of parking, bathroom facilities, etc. Downside- its largely 5 mph the whole way to our meet up location. Its near item 11 on the map.

Dana Landing- a bit smaller, limited dock tie up space, highly utilized but a great deli onsight, fuel dock right there and easy to use. I will likely set out from there, as it is pretty close to the meet up location. It is to the right of item 12 on the map. Each of the launches is marked by a blue box with a white boat/trailer in it. It is off Ingraham St., which is the vertical most line on the map. It is wedged in the area where Ingraham and Mission Bay Drive meet (that's W. Mission but not marked that way on the map). East Mission bay drive is over bu the DeAnza cove launch.

Our meeting destination is just inside the cove at item 7, Mariners Point.

I will be there a bit before Noon, in a Montauk, likely anchored just inside the cove as you come in. You are allowed to beach your boats there, which we may end up doing. I have never beached mine and will wait to see how its done!

Looking forward to meeting everyone.-Linda

1) My power tilt died on the launching ramp BEFORE I dropped the boat in, so it never made it in the water. Jock and Patsy graciously took us aboard.

2) The pizza delivery guy spoke only Vietnamese and we never ended up with pizza.

Otherwise, it was a nice time on Mission bay, with fellow CW'ers Jock and Patsy, Eric and Sandi, Billy and his girlfriend (oops, I did not catch her name) and 2 kids (who were brave enough to swim in 62 degree water!), Marty, Raaaay, Jane and me.

I would definitely do it again and hope to see both familiar and new faces the next time we do it.

Will post photos over the next couple of days.

Thanks again-

Linda

Yes, it was a great day out on the bay. Sunny and great company. It was fun meeting everyone and getting to see everyones favorite boat, even if Linda's boat didnt make it away from the launch ramp. Let do it again

Hey Billy-

even though I might think that your offshore fishing endeavors border on insane....

I had a really great time with all of you and hope to do it again. It was a nice group of people.

Billy, if you plan on a little fishing closing to shore, I would love to go out on your very fine Walkabout (and hang with Marty, as well)

Linda, God bless ya, Walkabouts are time-hallowed pastimes in Australia; Walkarounds are in Boston Whalers.

Kingfish- just caught my error, oops....This is what happens when you get online after a brutal day at work!

Billy's WALKAROUND was sweet. I have intermittent 2-foot-itis and am constantly hearing at home that we need to be happy with the Montauk (which I am). However, when we saw Billy's ride, the tone changed at home :)

You've got to take every opportunity you can when that door is opened-

To those who attended our little rendevous, Jock (taypow)has posted some photos from our day on his photobucket site.

Sorry, I am not good at creating the hyperlink in here.

I will also be creating a photobucket account, hopefully this coming weekend, with a few more photos.

Hey Guys,

Things have been a bit hectic and we are just getting around to sending out a note. Wanted to let everyone know we had a great time and look forward to getting together again and attending the boat show in January. It's nice to meet other Whaler enthusiasts and it sounds like we will have a few more the next time we meet. Linda, we have been tracking the progress on your tilt issue and are glad it was an inexpensive fix. Lets all keep in touch, have a great Thanksgiving Holiday. Eric and Sandi
