Any interest in a summer rendevous? |
| Hal Watkins |
Yes...but timing is everything. R U thinking August? Hal of Waseca, MN |
| prj |
Absolutely, I have interest. How about middle August timeline? |
| David1877 |
I had not decided on a particular month or date. Open slate. August is fine with me. PRJ-Yes, I have a 2005 Eastport. Merc 200. We like to camp at Rock Island. We have not been there for a few years. Last trip the winds were high and waves were large between Washington and Rock Islands. We arrived thursday afternoon via ferry and launched our Dauntless 18 at Washington Island. The crossing to Rock via "deaths door" was exhilerating to say the least. We made it high and dry, but a little white-knuckled. Waves were really big once we got beyond the protection of Washington Island. The Dauntess is a wide, stable boat and handled it ok. Never took a drop in the boat. We were the only arrivals that day. The ferry would not run for fear of bottoming out in wave trough. All boaters at Rock Island would not leave, it was just too rough. The next day, winds died down and the water was like glass. Good salmon fishing. Cought some small mouth bass too. David |

While we won't camp as this is our "high end" getaway weekend, we'd love to meet you guys out at Rock Island. Perhaps you can show me how to pull in a Smally up there. I expect that we'll stay in Fish Creek, slip the Outrage at Alibi and do a couple day trips out and about, maybe even around the peninsula. Lets keep an eye on an appropriate mid-August weekend. By the way, I love the imagery present with a ferry bottoming out in a wave trough. |

I enjoy camping, but a resort may be a welcome change after spending a long day on the water. There is a nice resort (Edgewater) with a small but nice dock facility available to guests. Free at no additional charge. Liimited space on the sheltered side. |

As always, I'm up for it, even though I'm the "little guy" with the 130 Sport. I have no problem crossing Death's Door - never have. Love Rock Island camping, too. Let's firm up a date.... |
| David1877 |
OK. Possible Saturdays are: 7/28, 8/4, 8/11, 8/18, 8/25 and 9/1. I will talk with my spouse about camping vs resort preference. Perhaps a night or two of each. We have not attempted a night in the cuddy yet. My boating experience in Door County is limited. I have explored most of the waters around Rock Island and a few of the harbors. I presume most waters are reasonably deep with little concern for underwater structure. The fishing near Rock Island is good for bass and salmon. We went trolling one evening. Lost one fish but soon after landed a 37 inch king. We quit there as it was plenty for us and a few other campers. Bait works well for bass. I used nightcrawlers. We were camping at Rock Island a few years ago when the Whaler rendezvous folks came through. It was fun to see other boats and visit with other owners. Most if not all of them spent the night on their boats/cuddy. |

David, Last time I was out at Rock Island, the water was a little low. There were areas on the east and southeast ends that were pretty shallow, but easily identified. Often times a lot of use will launch at Sister Bay, and I've considered Ellison Bay and Gills Rock launches, too. Shortens the trip a bit on getting out there, allowing more time after arrival. Any one of those dates works this me.... |
| David1877 |
Skred- There is an area between Rock and Washington Islands that is very shallow. I think a person might be able to walk most of the way. I marked fish in the shallow water East of these rocky areas and caught a few bass. |

David- I spend the summer in the Door! Great Place, The gobys have made small mouth fishing tougher! But the Salmon fishing is still truly great. A kid drowned last summer walking across that shallow bar between Rock Island and Washington Island. Write me an email next summer when you go up and if I'm not busy I would love to meet up with you or any of the guys. |

Is a new guy allowed into the rendezvous? My wife, son and I are interested in participating. We live west of Milwaukee with a 2007 21' CC on a trailer. The out of the box part is that the boat is not a Whaler. It is a custom built glass CC with the likes of a Whaler built by a good friend of mine. I realize this is a Whaler group but if your open to a Quasimodo in the group we would be honored to rendezvous with you all. |
| David1877 |
Sure Zmoto. The more the merrier. No dates or details have been selected. I have not organized one of these events in the past. I am not presonally acquainted with other members of the listserve. I have been to Door County a number of times, but I do not recall what town would offer the best launching/docking facilities. Any suggestions? Do we need marina reservations? The winds are howling and the snow is starting to build up. Looking forward to June. |

Thanks David I look forward to meeting you. A good friend runs a marina in Sturgeon Bay. He is researching a few places in SB that might accommodate a fleet of trailer boats for a rendezvous. He mentioned the public launch there is great. For what ever trip might become reality, I did some quick mapping on the GB side. The approximate distance by water following the shoreline appears to be the following: Sturgeon Bay to Egg Habor 16.7 statute miles Sturgeon Bay to Rock Island not following shore contour 55 sm I hope this offers some information for estimate planning and I look forward to more developments and ideas? Sturgeon Bay might be to far away from the harbors and Islands of interest. Thoughts…? |

Moving northward up the peninsula: A number of us stay in Fish Creek - there's launching, docking, and accommodatons, etc. there. Ephraim has accommodations, but is a pretty shallow entry/exit from the launch. Sister Bay (my favorite) has marina dock rentals, plenty of accommodations, and a very nice launch area. Ellison Bay is quite small, and I'm not sure about launch or accommodations being too numerous. Gills Rock has a fair launch area, but not a lot of accommodations. |

I would be interested in a trip either over July 4th (thats when the big Coho salmon arrive) or better yet, a week or two after Labor Day.(thats when the big greasy 20-30 pounders Kings make there way back to strawberry creek in the ship canal) I vacationed there every year for 10 years straight with my boat but quit going approximately 1998. Potawotamie state park was a favorite hangout, along with one of the marina/motels which offer slips and rooms near the sturgeon bay ship canal. Fishing up there is great if you base out of either of them 2 places...no matter if the wind is howling, you can find a place to fish. I never did make the trip to Washington Island...water was always too rough, or the fish were biting too good in the ship canal/bay/green bay. My Whaler is going to stay on its trailer this year at Northpoint Marina in Winthrop Harbor Illinois. 2006 305 Conquest every available option, and 2-250 Verados. I spend 8 months out of the year 80 miles west of chicago selling new and used rv's. -Kelly Hicks |

I have never been to a rendezvous event before, but if I get the Montauk back together by summer, I would be interested in attending! I have not spent a lot of time fishing Door County but do fish just across the bay in Oconto in the Spring and Big Bay du Noc and Little Bay du Noc in the summer and fall. Sounds like a good time. The weekend of 7/4 is booked. Will not work out for me. Go with the concensus. |

Sounds like fun. I am interested in this trip, possibly with my son. I live in Madison and have a 1996 19’ Outrage. I have a conflict and cannot go on 7/28,and 8/4. |
| David1877 |
Hello All- There has been no discussion on this matter for a few months. Weekend of July 4th is out for me. Door County is a great place to visit but it is a haul. In replace of or addition to Door, I would also be interested in a gathering in SE Wisconsin or NE Illinois. |
| skred |
I'm up for whatever dates folks want in Door County. Patrick: perhaps a few of us could meet at Milwaukee or Port Washington for a mini-rendezvous... I sure need some smoked salmon for my larder.... |
| Wiscbw |
I am planning to Salmon fish with friends off Milwaukee on Friday 6/29. Does that work as a mini-rendezvous for anyone? I could be persuaded to pick an additional day. |

Hey guys. Due to our vacation plans, I'm committed to a long weekend with family and family friends on August 2-5, Thursday through Sunday. I'll be bringing my Outrage-18 up and berthing it at Alibi, while we have 3 rooms in the Fish Creek Motel. Though I can't guarantee my ability to make a full day Rock Island run, I'd certainly love to meet up somewhere and take a cruise with the crew. One idea may be a short cruise then beaching on Chambers Island so the kids and less-interested can swim and play, while we ogle each other's boats with some beer in hand. Weather permitting, something like this is definitely on my agenda. As for a Lake Michigan rendevous, I'm not certain of what exactly we'd do. I'd love to fish in proximity to you guys, so perhaps thats what we plan. I'm going to head out this Saturday morning with one other as the Coho action is hot hot hot right now. The Summer has jumped over July into August... what happened to July? Was this a leap year that skips a month?? Sorry I have been out of touch. Most of the summer has been fast and furious. The fishing in Milwaukee has been great, the weather, my wife and 16 month young son have been the highlight of the summer. We managed to get out on the Storm Hawk several times this summer for a few good memories. Still interested in anyone who might be looking to assemble an end of summer door county rendezvous. Since nothing has been posted for over a month, my guess is a 2007 rendezvous has yet to take place? So you must all be itching to get out their for a trip… or… exhausted from the high level of distracting activities? Thoughts on a Dour County rendezvous... dkwasny@crash1.com Goal: To rendezvous the tip of Door County around and near Wash Isl & Rock Isl. Note: Weekend of Sept 14th - I’m in Chicago for family event (Grandma’s 90th B-Day Celebration). |

Zmoto, that Storm Hawk is the "start-up" CC built in the Madison area, correct? I know the Journal Sentinel's Rick Barrett has given those guys some press in the past. Anyway, I posted this on an adjacent article: I was in Door Co. earlier this month for a long weekend, and had a fantastic trip as is typical up there. The boating, dining, weather, coffee, scotch, family, friends and marina walks pretty much represent my highlights. I can strongly recommend Fish Creek if that list above appeals to you. If you prefer less company and fewer amenities, some of the other harbor towns may be preferrable. We stayed at the Fish Creek Motel with three adjacent rooms for us and friends. Great location, somewhat run-down building and interior, but fine outside space. http://www.flickr.com/photos/25169902@N00/1084821185/in/photostream/ I slipped my Outrage at the Fish Creek Municipal, as The Alibi Docks (or Marina?) were full at the time. Suggest you make reservations in advance, as these two locations are set up for much larger vessels than our own. We traveled to Chambers Island sand bar for a day at the beach. We checked out the odd and beautiful Ridges Sanctuary on the Lake side for a nice day trip. Summertime gave us one stellar meal on a Thursday, and one almost forgettable meal on a Saturday with a larger group. http://www.flickr.com/photos/25169902@N00/1084821235/in/photostream/ |
