Well here it is folks! the 2nd Annual Lake Lanier Rendezvous thread! Last September we met at two different ramps, and went to the Holiday Grill for lunch. Murphy worked on Boston Whaler blankets as a great give away from Boston Whaler. We then cruised to Browns Bridge for a group swamping! I am suggesting a one day rendezvous sometime this spring (maybe May?). Had a great time and met some great people, looking forward to this one!-k

I'm in - and have a story to tell from last time.

Just after I left everyone at lunch to head back, I got about halfway back to the dock and my speed was awful. I had noticed something was up a couple weeks before so I started heading back to a cove. Needless to say then I heard a huge clang and rattle and no power. Motor ran fine but no Fwd/Rev. So I paddled the last 300yds to the ramp I saw (it was Shoal Creek), beached and tied to a rock, walked up the ramp and hitched a ride to the Dam Store ramp within 2 minutes. I was trailered and heading home within 30 minutes.

I would have called for help since I had the list of everyone's cell phones but I knew y'all were heading North and I was set up for a pretty quick self-recovery. Would you believe, though, that at least 5 boats and Jet Skis flew by me while paddling in and noone asked if I needed help or a quick tow? I didn't whistle or signal but oh well. Having canoe experience came in real handy.

SO--since then it was that "gee I hope it was just a shear pin" phase but it wasn't. It's all chewed up in there. But thankfully I found a used lower unit pretty cheap to swap out and the engine still runs great.

Lanier's level is coming up some as well.

I am looking forward to the gathering this year. I was really bummed when I was forced to miss the one in September. Count me in for May.

Superdave, sorry to hear about your troubles. Hope your new lower unit will treat you right! I am only about half way through my bottom paint removal project (PIA) but I'll be
there whatever shape she is in.

I got some new tackle and a fish-finder for Christmas so I'll have to pick up some striper tips and spots from you guys.

I will be in Athens, GA on business for 4-13 June. That weekend would be ideal for me as a non-local.
superdave_gv posted 02-11-2007 07:51 PM ET (US)     Profile for superdave_gv  Send Email to superdave_gv

That could work for me. It is Memorial Day weekend so that's the only potential catch.

Dave- I wasn't thinking straight when I suggested that weekend, I am glad you pointed that out! Didn't realize it was Memorial Day weekend! I suggest we move it earlier to Saturday the 19th of May- Lanier will be a zoo on the 26th! What do y'all think?
Mambo- I am not too keen on Saturdays during prime time summer boating season- was hoping for a "preseason" event as I try to avoid the follies and tragedies of Bayliners vs. Go-fasts, Blowboaters vs. Houseboaters, etc... Lanier turns ugly by 11am on most Saturdays and Sundays during "the season".
Will go with the flow for whatever we decide-k

Saturday May 19th is good, maybe using May 26th as a rain-out back up day. Lake levels been staying at 1,066 all month. This year is Lake Lanier's 50th anniversary so maybe we'll be back to full pool after a 1-year hiatus.

By the way I still say we should make a run up to Lake Burton one day but we can talk about it later.

I dont think lake levels will be an impact us this year, but there is a very nice new boat ramp tool in Excel on the Army Corps website. It has all the depths for different lanes at each dock, etc. when you enter the lake level at the top.

lanier.sam.usace.army.mil

Not sure if I got the link right, that's exactly how it looks in the browser. Follow the link to Open Boat Ramps - Elevation Calculator.

That is also the website that has the database of lake levels for today and every day back to 1956.

Lake Burton / let's plan one this Summer, it's a great lake. Of course it's smaller and gets busy but consider this: I had 4 adults (incl me) on my 13 last year, just cruising around and looking at the million $ houses. No big boats allowed on it, their limit is no boats with a toilet I believe. Free boat ramp next to Moccasin Creek State Park

Ill mark my calendar for May 19 then. Looking forward to it.

I would also be interested in a Lake Burton outing. I have been wanting to camp up there again, and I might be able to manager pulling the camper and boat up for the weekend.

I went ahead and bumped the post DickRussell. Do you think you'll have your boat ready? I propose we meet at East Bank (behind the Dam Store) or at Lanier Park (right next to East Bank) on Saturday morning, the 19th of May. What do y'all think? Holiday Grill for lunch? What else?-k
superdave_gv posted 03-21-2007 10:52 PM ET (US)     Profile for superdave_gv  Send Email to superdave_gv

The plan last year worked really well, that is a great ramp behind the Dam Store and Holiday Grill was a great place to eat. Doing the same would not be bad at all.

Another alternative since we have more water this year could be to get a pavilion at one of the ramps and grill out. Any thoughts? Not sure how practical a marine approach to a park would be. If there is a park where the picnic tables are close to boat trailer parking then it would be easy. Maybe pick a park up one of the Northern branches of the lake?

Just a thought, I am definitely good with repeating last year's plan.

I am all for putting in on the south end at the Dam Store and having lunch at Dockside. I had lunch there last Friday with my son and it was great. It was their first day open for the season. Looking forward to the gathering. Who was it that got the blankets from BW last year. Do we think we can get BW to do something this year. I would love to get a pic of all of us with a BW banner.

Hi to evereone! This is my first post on this area of the board. We're really excited about the Lanier get together in May. Came up from Florida last Saturday and immediately started looking for a ramp to put in on the Lake.(we live in Cleveland) The one closest to me is the Olympic rowing venue ramp in Cleremont on the north end of the lake Can anyone tell me how far the run would be by water to get to the ramp you all have decided on? Would it be better to trailer and meet at the ramp and if so please give me directions on how to get there from Cleveland.I'd be coming south on 129. It'll be great to meet some Whaler owners in Georgia.

Nauti Tauk,
What size whaler do you own. If it is a Montauk or larger you can just make the run down the hooch to the Dam. ANything smaller then I would pull it down on the trailer. Take I-985 and get off at Hwy 20 West. Turn right on Suwannie Dam Road. Take that till it ends at Buford Dam Road. You will see the road next to the Dam Store and the sign for the ramp. See you there in my 20 Outrage

Nauti Tauk - The run from the rowing venue to the Dam Store ramp will take about 45 minutes to an hour unless your flat out flying. It's a easy run right down the channel. I think Joes right, if it's a smaller Whaler it can get pretty choppy and wouldn't be much fun by the afternoon. Hope to see you there. Garey

Thanks guys. We do have a montauk. I'll be dropping it in the water next week to get a feel for the lake if it warms up a bit and will probably come by water. Whats the decesion on eating? Should we bring picinic stuff or just cold drinks for the ride? Can I bring anything for the "group"?

Nauti Tauk,
Depending on how crowded the lake is that day it may be a rough ride. With that said, I would not worry about lunch, I think the plan is to cruise together to Dockside Bar at Holiday Marina. It is a great place with great sandwiches. See you there

Well I put the Montauk in yesterday for the first ride in Georgia water! Put in at Claarks Bridge and ran to the south end of the lake, about 20 or so miles by gp, course thats straight line. The main lake was pretty bumpy (15kt wind 2-21/2') short chop with whitcaps. Coming back wasn't too bad going with the wind and waves, was able to "air out" in a couple of places. Not sure where the ramp is so will take a run by truck and do a dry run before the get together. If I can help with any of the plans let me know, will e-mail my phone number.

Nauti Tauk - I went out fishing today on Lanier- beautiful morning, the lake was glass! Didn't catch any stripers, but a few nice spots, and many, many hits! I can't believe you were out and about on the lake yesterday- we had some serious gusts in Lawrenceville in the afternoon!

Guys- I am going to take the backseat on this thread, I am getting ready to go on vacation for a couple weeks and will be "incommunicado" until I return! Will check this thread to see what y'all have planned! Looking forward to the Rendezvous- k

Kevin,
I am in the same boat...I will be on the road forthe next 3 weeks. NJ next weekend for 7 days, then the following Monday off to Las Vegas. Home the following weekend then off to Salt Lake City for a week. I am hoping to get the boat cleaned up befor the Rendezvous.

I noticed on the BW Website that there is no dealer for this area again. I guess Bowling Bridge Marine gave up the dealership and I had heard that MarineMax was going to take it but maybe they changed their mind. I was going to contact whoever the dealer was to see if they wanted to be involved in our little get together. Who was it last year that got the blankets. Maybe he could try again or I will give it a try. Let me know Gang.

I am excited and can't wait for the gathering. See Ya all there!

Joe- It sounds like you have a full schedule ahead of you! I will be headed to Greece for two weeks on Tuesday, should be a good time, just about my entire family (parents & siblings + spouses) will be touring the mainland for a week, for the second week we board a ship for a tour of the Greek isles. Santorini will be one stop but our boat is not a huge cruise liner, so I don't think we have to worry about how much water she draws! After that I have to make a run to Florida to pick up a puppy! Murphy was "the man" who was able to work out some nice blankets (used them this winter!) from Boston Whaler. We haven't heard from him for a while!

What do you think Murphy? Can you work your magic again!

I guess we need to have some folks check in to the thread- How about it guys? Who's coming? George? Dick? Garey? Dave? Richard? Mambo? It sounds like Nauti Tauk will be there!-k

For the groups consideration, a friend has a place on the
Chestatee just across from Bolding Mill park grid# 21.
He has offered its use. Double slip dock, large level grassy area, and toilet and changing facilities. Picnic or potluck?
Close by ramps Bolding Mill (just around the corner), War Hill
(just across the lake, close to 400 outlet mall). South of Keith Bridge there is Little Hall, Duckett Mill and River Forks all close.

Yeah I am in, with a big itch to get back on the water. GCarlil's option sounds cool for a North lake destination. Just East of the Dam Store launch is Lanier Park and it's ramp. There is a pavilion there we could reserve for $90 for the day that has it's own platform dock. You can see the picnic tables from either launch. But earlier it seemed like everyone was leaning on the restaurant. So who knows, just putting it out there.

Renting a pavilion on the south side is another good option- I'll be glad to kick in for that if that's what y'all decide. I figure I'll put in at the Dam store (meet up with whoever else puts in there) and ride where ever we're meeting! My only concern about Bolding Mill is a long, rough ride back!-k

Although I do not have to worry, it may be a rough ride for those 13's and 15's unless everyone puts in up north. I have not been to far up the Chestatee branch. Have been as far as Clarks Bridge on the Hooch branch. Let me know

Sorry to be out of touch, work has been crazy busy!!

I just sent Traci an email to see if BW can help out this year with some free stuff. I'll keep everyone posted.

I put in the lake today and had a great time, but it was choppy in my 13. It is making me want a bigger boat... maybe I'll win the lottery! Anyway, I am game for any of the lunch suggestions. A stop at one of the many beaches is also a good idea I think. They kids will want to stop and swim for sure.

Murphy,
Thanks for checking into it. I love the blanket you sent me from last year. Speaking of bigger boats, did you see the 17 Montauk for sale in the Marketplace. It is FLA somewhere. It is in unbelievable condition and I think a steal at 10K. I sold my Montauk over 2 years ago for 10.6K and the bottom was painted. I know Minitauk was looking for a Montauk. He might miss a good one here while he is cruising the Greek Isles. I would love to opt for lunch at Dockside. Great place to relax and have a couple of drinks. Plus their sandwiches are excellent. See you on the pond.

I stopped by the Dockside store for some batteries. Dockside grill was quite busy, I love that place. We may want to try and get there right before noon or right at noon to get some big tables on the deck. I'm up for crusing up north or anything after that. jmorgan, I've never been on Lanier. I usually stick to Lake Wilson in North Alabama and have been down to the coast once. I have the boat nearly finished. Its going to the dealer tomorrow for the final checkout. I'm out of town this weekend but should be able to check it out next week and the following weekend. I should be good to go unless the dealer comes up with something bad.

I'm interested, but can't say for sure due to a hectic work schedule.

Out of curiosity, what happens at a rendezvous? I take it everyone meets around a certain time, puts in, and the newly assembled fleet heads for lunch? Or is there enough dock space wherever it is that everyone can tie up and stare at each other's boats or...?

Just trying to get a better feel for what's involved; I usually fish Oconee at night with as few people around as possible, so this is kind of a new idea in my little world.

Would like to meet some other Whalers and owners,

Thanks,

Can't speak for all Rendezvous obviously but Lanier's first one last year was close to what you described. Launch times in close proximity at the Dam Store ramp, the group went to lunch at a Marina with enough open visitor slips, some left and some continued on to beach and explore. All good folks and family friendly. It's really cool to be a part of a bunch of Whalers on a line heading to the same spot. Very simple concept but nothing like it.

By the way, anyone interested in helping me move a platform dock by water in the next couple weeks? If so, shoot me an email. I am moving a better one to my spot (8 miles on water) and getting rid of my old one (1.5 miles to ramp). I don't have a trailer to haul my old one to the dump from the ramp so may be paying somebody to do that. The bids I got for this were fairly expensive so free beer and steak for all helpers. Definitely needs to be a blue sky / not windy / weekday ordeal so that will limit availability as well.

Dave,
Sorry I can't be any help during the week. Have we finalized the plans for the 19th? What time should we all gather and at what time. Most people are putting in at East Bank Park on the South end. I think it would look really cool if we all come in together to Dockside Grill.

Maybe everyone could meet in the cove in front of East Bank and Lanier Park. Then we could all pull into Dockside together.

Does anyone have a BW banner for a group picture. If not I was thinking of ordering the 3'x5' one on the Boston Whaler site. It would look great in the shot.

Hey Murthy, did you hear back from Traci at BW? Mybe they would be interested in the group shot from the meet with the banner. free PR for them.

Looking forward to meeting everyone this year. Might even have the wife taked into going. See you all there.

Hey everbody,
Looks like wife and I are going to come back up(from Florida) for the rendevous. Is it going to be started at the Dam Store ramp for sure and what time is put in? Wife hasn't seen the lake yet so we'll probably come by water from the norht end. Getting excited!
Superdave, If you haven't already moved your docks around before I get back up I'll be glad to help you "get er' done" Jerry

My Montauk is sitting in Charleston, South Carolina right now so we will officially not make the rendezvous. I wish you all good weather. Remember this year, if you go to the beach after lunch, to anchor the boats with the bows facing out. We all got swamped last year by a rouge wave.

You are welcome to ride with me if you still want to go. I have plenty of room in the Outrage. Wife has to work so I will be by myself.

Thanks for the kind offer. We actually have visitors on the 19th, so it still will not work out.

Guys, no word yet from Traci. I just sent her another email. One idea is for us to all pitch in and get some tshirts made... maybe with BW and CW logos? Not sure about getting permissions for that...

Also, my boat is still in sad shape- a partial bottom paint removal project underway and my pressure washer died last year. I am trying to find time to fix it... hopefully by the 19th.

Dave, I would love to help, but don't think I can find the time during the week. Let me know if your plans move to the weekend.

Alright guys! I'm back and ready to get on the water! First off:

Dave- The next few Fridays I am tied up one way or another, at least through the end of May. If you still need help with the dock transport let me know!

George- I'd love to check out the upper end some time this summer- sure beats not catching fish! We'll talk at the Rendezvous.

Unless anyone objects I'll make an official decision and say we meet at the Dam Store Ramp (East Bank or the park adjacent) between 9 and 9:30 on Saturday morning. We then can cruise the lake and eat lunch at Holiday. If anyone wants to ride with me just let me know for lifejacket purposes.

I suggest we all check in on this thread so we have an idea of how many folks & boats we're talking about. If you like you can email me with your cellphone numbers and I can email a list of numbers to each participant. If you don't want me to give your number out please let me know! Please indicate where you'll launch from, last year it was fun picking folks up along the way! -k

Good ride, Sirus radio, and refreshments,,,What more would you need. Let me know if interested. Kevin, my cell is (404)660-3729 or hail me on Ch 16, call sign "Jersey Girl". See ya all on the pond.

First off, thanks for the replies about the dock move! George boated in today to check out the scene. With George and another friend of mine helping we will knock it out like old pros -- or have a heck of a mishap story to tell everyone on Saturday the 19th!

My first put-in was yesterday evening and it was a blast--new "to me" lower unit included-- ended up doing tons of figure 8s at the mouth of Balus Creek waiting on the sun to set.

Itinerary sounds solid-- see y'all soon!

Did you hear from Traci at BW...Does anyone have a BW banner for a group shot? If not I will order the one on the website. I am looking forward to the gathering. Since the wife can not make it she wants me to take her out tomorrow for Mother's Day and lunch at dockside. What a woman...I get off cheap on that one and get a day on the lake. See ya all next Saturday.

Just checking in. Is the dam store and ramp the one listed here http://www.thedamstore.homestead.com/Directions.html
I am planning on heading over for the event and will be bringing the Montauk. I took it out on Saturday and Sunday and it seems ready to go. I may or may not have a radio in it by this weekend. I hope thats not a big deal.
I'm looking forward to it. B

reclarke,
Yes, that is the correct location. You will see a road that runs down the left side of the store and cafe. The entrance to East Bank park is about 25 yds down. Ramp is at the end of the road. You will need to pay a $2.00fee unless you have an Army Corp pass.

I was on the lake Sunday with the wife and daughter. We just cruised around looking at homes then had lunch at Dockside Grill. As always the food was great. Lake was very crowded with Mothers Day and the nice weather.

See ya all Saturday.

So far I have received some confirmations with cellphone numbers which I plan to compile into a list and email to all involved on Thursday night. I'll also post a list of confirmed participants here on this thread (without cell numbers). Looks like the weather will be perfect for Saturday! It was brought to my attention that the ramp next to the Dam Store is also available, and a better set up for launching and parking. I am planning on fishing early Friday morning (hope to be on the water by sunrise) if anyone is interested. I haven't run the boat in over a month, and I am using this as a good excuse to "make sure it still works"! I hope it does better at catching fish. -k

Joe,

I have not heard anything from Traci at BW. :-(

I do have a few blankets left over from last year in box somewhere. I can bring them if anyone who didn't get one last year wants one.

I am looking forward to getting together, however, I will have to cut out early because I didn't realize that my son's last soccer game is also this Saturday. Next year we will need to schedule this after school is out. :-)

See you guys on the lake Saturday. Ill be putting in at Shoal creek again and will motor over to the dam put-in and meet up with some of you other folks.

Joe- Sounds cool! I'll try to remember the tripod for a pic!
Garey- I decided I probably won't fish tomorrow (too windy, on the front) but I will take the 15 out for a spin in the morning, haven't run her in too long! See you there-k

After we meet up in the morning, why don't we cruise up behind 3 Sisters (4 ?) islands b4 we head back to Dockside? It will be calmer there than in the main channel.

Yes, we definitly want to be at dockside grill by 11:30 or 12:00 at the latest. I was there two weeks ago and there were almost 30 people waiting for tables by 1:00 PM, See you tomorrow morning.

On the way back to the Dam Store ramp it was hairy in the main channel with the big boats. I cannot confirm or deny but Mark swears my 13 got airborne once. All I can say is don't try it at home, kids. And that my lower back doesn't find it amusing whatsoever.

Sorry I couldn't be there. Would have liked to put some names to faces and scope some other set ups out, but alas, a trailer with one wing is a might twitchy to tow. Add in the muscles I tore last week, and I probably wouldn't have been the best company.

Glad it went off well, I had really wanted to be there for the group picture. Something to hang in my office to stare at besides all the computer screens. Oh well, maybe next time I will have had the boat a bit longer and have some of the kinks worked out and updates done.

And if anyone wants to see air I'll show you how. We just gotta decide whose boat I can use for the demo....:-)

It was great to meet everyone today...I had a great time and met some new friends. The ride back was even a little bumpy in the Outrage. Only downside to a great day was I forgot to lower my antennas before I left the ramp. Got halfway home before I remembered, by that time I had snaped off the 8 ft digital. Oh well, it go in the way of the rod holders anyway. I ordered a 4 ft digital tonight that matches the other one. Hope to see you all again soon. Maybe we can do a gathering in September or October.

Mark did say he saw completely under Superdaves boat. The foot did remain in the water though. It was a little rough on the ride back but we made it. Whaler "What Water Ban?" Wash-n-Wax

Hey is there any interest in having a get together to wash, wax, polish, etc our boats? My intent is admittedly selfish since I don't have an orbital or a good driveway or much knowledge beyond washing and waxing a car (it's my first boat, what can I say). With the Georgia water bans starting at 10am on Sat or Sunday, that would be plenty of time for the wash part with an early start. Or use a coin-op car wash and then head to someones driveway. Thought it might be a savings to all pitch in on supplies, the 3M stuff, whatever.
