My inquiry thread in GAM about people who live in Florida has resulted in Ellen wanting to do a road trip to Florida. We have not ruled out taking the 13 but it is unlikely.

We are staying somewhere around Sarasota and Venice on the beach for three days, the rest of the time we'll be scoutin'.

If any of you have recommendations, I am really into seeing "old Florida" and cool stuff including best or secret beaches, fishin stuff, snorkeling, back country and local flavor. We are not into attractions, malls or tourist stuff unless really cool. I have never been on Gulf side. We blow out of here Mar 31 for Tampa to see Cousin Garry and then to beach house. We will probably make a stop or three to say high to snow birds/fam. Sarasota beach house 2,3,4th and then ramblin on. We've done the South Beach thing, some of the Keys and lots of time in past years around Melbourne.

I'd like to see some inland lakes, cross the middle and we will go up the Atlantic side. I'd like to check out the BW factory - anyone have info on that? Must be worth it.

If you have tips and suggestions we'd appreciate it.

Go/no-go for hauling 13 will be next week sometime.

Best to all.

Am planning to do a similar trip later in the year, as my wife is from St Pete. One place I plan to go to is Caladesi Island State Park, just north of Clearwater Beach. The state runs a 100 slip marina there. I think it's free to stay there. Can only get to it by boat. The beaches are top rated. I plan to launch my 13 from the public boat ramp on the mainland side, just north of Dunedin, and zip across the mile or two. I've been scoping it out using Google Earth...

I think the latest issue of Saltwater Sportsman has some suggested fishing areas of "Old Florida". Might be worth checking out...

Here is your information resource for Caladesi Island:
http://www.floridastateparks.org/caladesiisland/

For anyone planning a trip to Florida to see the "Real Florida", I suggest wandering through the information provided in the http://www.floridastateparks.org/FindaPark.cfm website. You can review the parks by region, if you know a general area of Florida you intend to visit. You can also use their website to make reservations for camping sites through "Reserve America". The page describing each individual park generally includes a statement from the Park Manager which sometimes provides insight into any feature of the park which may be closed for renovations.

Pat,
Another beautiful option is the Fort DeSoto boat ramp and cruise the Ft. DeSoto waters and Egmont key. (South of Caladesi). The beaching and fishing around St. Joseph sound, Caladesi Island, Honeymoon Island and Egmont key is fantastic. If the weather is rough the cruise around Ft. DeSoto will be much more manageable.
Enjoy,
Jordi

Boy were we dumb - slammed in traffic bumper to bumper from Atlanta to FL border. I thought LA and Seattle was bad - Actually got off interstate in GA and took two lane for about 50 miles - 41 I think. Very cool back roads, old Georgia I presume.

In any case, left too late, slammed in traffic, screwed up Sat plans, burnt out but now renewed after night in Tampa Westin. We are going to Tarpon Springs this afternoon to eat Greek Food and possibly meet up with some CW pals.

We also have to cut the trip short due to work deadlines that appeared over the rimrock end of March so we left 13 home. So we head north next Sat or Sun.

best

We're back - had a great trip much as a result of your suggestions. I will post some more info but this scouting mission certainly jazzed us up on FL especially me. I never thought I'd consider relocating anywhere but west or mountain states until Whalers came into our reality. But this trip opened some possibilities. Best was to see relatives and time with one of the CW members and wife.

More later - thanks again, just rolled in.
