It looks like I will be working near Gran Rapids this July-August. Starting to think I might want to haul the boat up as I can leave it in my friends driveway in Romulus for the weekends. Still a long way to take it for a few weekends. If anybody is needing/wanting some company/crew on the weekends, let me know.

I am willing to bet there will be lots of opportunities for you to get on the water with people around here. You might want to think about keeping the boat over in the Grand Rapids area and using it out of Grand Haven and Holland which are less than a 1/2 hour away. If you need help locating a place to store it over there let me know. I will look for a self storage next time I am over there. I try to get to Grand Haven (at the in-laws) at least once a month with the 22 and would always welcome company. Or if you want to head over on the South Eastern side of the state, which is were I call home along with a lot of other people from the board, I am sure there are plenty of people to boat with.

I will say if you have a chance to get away for a long weekend take the boat up to Northern Michigan and tour the areas around Frankfort, Sleeping Bear, Glen Arbor, and Traverse City.

I'm boating out of St. Joseph (about 50 minutes SW of GR) nearly every weekend and always welcome having crew aboard. I can't promise fishing success though!

You should have no problem finding a place to keep your boat around GR or any place close to Lake Mich - in fact, you could probably get short term moorage in Grand Haven, Muskegon which reduces the hassle of hooking up, hauling, launching and take outs. I'll ask around.

Thanks for all the great info gang. Now it looks like it's going to be September for Grand Rapids. Has the ice formed in the harbors yet?

Early to Mid September has some of the most consistent weather in this area - and some of the best boating, since much of the summer pressure has died down - even on the weekends, as families go back to school and work.

Ice doesn't form on the harbors until November/December...and sometimes January.

No just need to bring some warmer clothes for the evening and morning chill.

Now...if your assignment gets delayed until February, we might have a problem. I can fire up the E-TEC's though with full canvas if you're game....we may have problems if the ramp is frozen in though.

Go to for some great information about visiting the state.

Some of the best advertisements on radio and TV can be found at .

Despite the prevailing opinions from the majority of Americans, Michigan is far, far, far more than the decline of American Automotive Manufacturing Prowess. True, the woes of the Big 3 are a major challenge for the population - but Michigan as a whole state is much more about an outdoor enthusiasts wonderland.

Have a great trip, and give me an e-mail when you're around...we'll go burn some gas and pretend to fish.
