I've been asked by my son to lead a scout patrol outing with 2 or 3 small boats (likely 17-18' whalers) to an overnight destination in the San Juans from Bellingham.

I haven't done this before, but have sailed in the islands a fair bit.

Two friends with lots of local experience suggested either Pelican Beach on Cypress Island or Spencer Spit on Lopez. The scouts (ages 15-17) will want to hike, crab, fish, beachcomb. It'll be a two night outing in late August.

Anybody have an informed opinion about these or other destinations? I think factors would include safe and easy passage from Belligham, dock space or moorings with a decent beach to beach the boats to off-load, nice campsites, things to do shoreside, close destinations for day tripping on the boats, potable water, and ???

Any input would be appreciated as we'll be picking a primary and secondary destination in the next week or so.

Thanks,

Jim

Pelican is closer and will be more secluded. I have not been ashore there in a long time.

Spenser spit is not one of my favorite spots. Too open, crowded, shallow.

O'oops again, you want a dock? Go to Sucia. Pelican only has a couple of park bouys, and anchorage is crappy, actually the bouys are quite exposed also. Spenser and Sucia have better anchorages. If you anchor the boats out, how do you get in? John

I saw Scout troop and I assumed kyack or canoe.

John,
Thanks for the input. We'll take a close look at Sucia.

Jim

I would check out Jones Island off the SW corner of Orcas Island. It is smaller than Sucia and considerably less visited.

Stuart is another option. Either Reid Harbor or Prevost.

Stuart has a hike out to the school, which I heard was closing and the lighthouse on the point. I think Jones has it's water back, but I am not sure. John

If you have not gone on the trip yet, I just got back from Sucia and Fox Bay would be the ticket. I got pictures if interested. John
