Guys -

Who is up for a Merrimack River gathering? I am thinking anytime after Labor Day so the dates could be:

8th or 9th
15th or 16th
22 or 23
29 or 30

I leave the plan open to those in the area.

Please tell me your dates and sugeestions.

My preference is 15th.

Thanks

CBO

September sounds good to me, count me in. Any day but Saturday the 8th as I am already attending my brothers seafood party on that date.

I look forward to seeing everyone again, Pete

I'm away 9/7-8-9, but all of the later dates would work for me. I need something like this to keep the season running - my OR has forgotten what water feels like.

weekend of 15/16 is better for me.....would love to attend.

Phil - cruise down together from Eliot?

Couldn't make the York Harbor Marine gig....took the cameras over to our 6/4/05 rally spot off Fox Point to watch the Pease Air Show...great stuff other than heavy winds playing havoc with the schedule.

Having a B - 2 bomber fly right over your head is pretty cool.

Anyone else catch it?

Sept 15 & 16 are out for us. The others sound good. Would love to see some of those B-2 pics.

I also caught the B-2 ,makes you proud to be an American ! No wonder they all hate (fear) us, the F-16 and Tomcat on Sunday were also very impressive.

I would say the 15th works well except that Vink can't make it. Seeing how Vink never backs out or is late (like Phil), how about a show of hands for the 29th?

For both the weekend of the 15th and the weekend of the 29th, the high tide is right around 2 pm. We could plan a nice cruise from the Merrimack River down to Ipswich via the Plum Island River which is a really nice cruise thru the marshes and completely protected. If the seas are reasonable, we could go south via the ocean, and back thru the Plum Island River. If conditions are less favorable, we go both ways on the inside.

What do you all think?

I am in for that date.

Brian - Sure we can meet up at Eliot. Seen Al H on the water this season?

Nate - Oh boyo ....you watch it!

Anybody seen/heard from Hobie? (should write a book...where's Hobie?)

Nate - You are the designated tour guide. (Hang on everyone...this will be interesting.)

No gaurantees but we will try to make it on the 15th. It is a very busy weekend for me with the NASCAR race. The back route to Ipswich looks like an interesting ride.
Hope to see everyone again this year. Let's pick a late to mid morning meeting time for the folks that have to travel some distance.

Guys -

Let's work out meeting time and location.

Given that Brian is MIA, my alternate plan is to launch at Cashman's. Given this, I will try to arrive early, say 8:30 a.m.

One place to meet is off of Cashman's or down river a bit at the town docks (south side of the river)

Nate - Being our guide, what is a good time to meet that works for the tides?

Looks like the weather will be fallish so bring warm clothing. Plan for the worst is my rule. (This worked for me on our Piscat trip).

Anyone who does not have my cell #, email me off line.

OK - now I'm in the loop. I will be there a little before 10:00 on Saturday. It's about an hour and a half on the road, plus gassing up, etc.

I'll bring my US Power Squadron Vessel Safety Exam stuff, (decals, etc) for free exams for any who want them (like we did a couple of years ago) - just catch me during the day.

We should stay in touch on CW Friday, to check weather changes that might change teh plans - it's a little shaky now on long range forecast, but they are usually wrong, aren't they?

See you there,

High tide is around 2:15 pm. We should begin our journey at around 12:00 which gives us at least a four hour window, although we don't need nearly that much time. Lets plan on meeting up at the "hump sands" which is the sand bar down on the flats. Take a look at the links I posted above. The meeting place will be North of the start of the route I marked and south of the green "11" can on the chart. If you are coming from up river (Cashman's), follow the channel east towards the mouth until you find the #11 can then look off to your right and look for the Whalers anchored up. Some of you might remember this spot from a rendezvous a couple years ago.

I will try and be there no later than 11:00 am to fire up the grill and cook some grub. Any requests?

Sounds good Nate. I'm most likely going to put in over at the Salisbury State Park ramp. Any idea of "tour milage" as I'm not sure what the heck my SD drinks these days.

I'd be up for chipping in for some burgers etc.

Jeff G.

newt posted 09-12-2007 07:13 AM ET (US)     Profile for newt  Send Email to newt
Jeff, if we were to go all the way down to the mouth of the Ipswitch river, the mileage is 12.5 +/- from where we are going to start in the sand bar. So, Max roundtrip would be about 25 miles if we went down and back thru the river and a few miles less if we came back by ocean. However, any side excursions up the Parker River or anything else could add some miles.

Glad to see you are around. I take it you are not in the water at Larry's this year?

NHHobie posted 09-12-2007 05:51 PM ET (US)     Profile for NHHobie  Send Email to NHHobie
Hi Nate:

For the amount of time that I was using my Nauset (4-5 trips/season), I had to pass on docking at Larry's last year.

25+ miles should be no sweat, I'll just have to keep off the throttle. :-).

Look forward to seeing old and new friends.

I am planning to get in the water at 9 ish, What to do between 9 and 12...

Still no word from Brian, so I will be at Cashman's. I assume Pete, Mike Sullivan, Vin and GBCBU will be there, anybody else?

Hopefully, CatBoat will crew with me.

Nate - When are you planning on getting on the water?

newt posted 09-12-2007 10:33 PM ET (US)     Profile for newt  Send Email to newt
Phil, If life went according to plan, I would be on the water well before the rising sun (or the fading Catboatsailor) to try and catch some of those fish that seem to avoid me so well. We'll see. I'll try and be OTW no later than 10:00.

My guess is that Matt will have fished the entire night on Plum Island and either you or I can pick him up down at the party boat dock in the morning.

Mike, I'll take a sticker again this year!

here is the Saturday forecast:
Se winds 10 to 15 kt...becoming SW 15 to 20 kt with gusts up to 25 kt around noon...then becoming NW with gusts up to 30 kt late. Seas 3 to 5 ft. A chance of showers.

It looks like a good day to stay in the river.

I agree with Hobie.....keep off the throtle. Smell the roses and enjoy the scenery. We all know how fast our boats will go.
I also aree with Newt to stay in the river both ways with the marine forecast for 3-5 foot seas.
It looks like 10AM or so is going to be the average meeting time. The longer we hold off the better chance that the showers will pass.

I am looking forward to a nice run thru the Plum Island River.

see ya all Saturday, Pete

Happy to report Brian is not MIA, just busy. But not too busy to join us.

I will be going down Piscat River with him and meeting you at the sand bar.

I will email with CatBoat on how to pick him up.

In looking at the weather technical discussion, it appears to be improving from earlier in the week:

quote:
Showers will move to the east during Sat morning as front pushes offshore. We will have chance probability of precipitation for the morning...with likely probability of precipitation across east Massachusetts. Good drying moves in behind the front so expect clearing from west to east Sat afternoon and it will become breezy with good mixing/cold air advection in northwest flow.

Temperatures should reach low to middle 70s in the coastal plain with developing sunshine and downslope northwest flow as warmer 850 temperatures hang on through 18z before crashing. Cooler across northwest zones with readings remaining in the middle/upper 60s.

If all goes well will trailer to Cashmans on Sat. morn to meet up. Probably have my father with me. Maybe the wife and kids depending on the weather forcast.

Phil, 3-5' waves would slow me down seeing as I have the original Whaler john boat...mmmm...I mean V-20 Hull, but I should have known you and Brian wouldn't think twice about it!

FOOD: I have a small stainless boat grill that I plan to fire up around 11:00. I will bring some burgers/buns/condiments. Please feel free to bring anything else to throw on the grill. It would be great if everyone brought a little something to share and we can catch up, eat, chat, etc while the flotilla assembles.

I will either be solo or bring one kid with me tomorrow. The plan is to get on the water in time to catch the end of the outgoing tide. If I do escape and get out early, I'll be anchored up fishing on the North side of the river about a 1/4 mile in from the mouth. If others are on the water early, feel free to stop by and tie up.

Arrived home safe.

Brian and my ride back to Portsmouth was not that bad. Started snotty but got better. Last 8 miles, we were bombing along at 30 mph. So everyone knows, that is Brian's favorite speed, regardless of the seas.

Elapsed Time - 7 hours, 51 minutes
Total Distance - 87.9 miles

Nate - You did a great job and the tour was really wonderful. The Plum river is amazing. Thanks to your Dad for saving all of us from your cooking.

Vin - Always good to see you. You were smart to turn around.
Mike - Will work on the bimini issues over the winter and be in touch.
Pete - Boat still looks amazing. You are quite the master of the Plum River Matt - Good to see you with the boat. She is fine!

Not sure you guys saw this, heading back from Annisquam (sp?) harbor into that mess, Brian and I were far ahead. With me in front and Brian 20 -30 ft behind me, I turned to check his position and at that moment he came off a wave and was totally airborne and bow up. Man what a sight. Hope that didn't hurt Brian. Looked to me like you came down really hard. Wish I had my camera. Looked just like that guy off the coast of CA who caught air.

While nothing broke on the boat, I did loose my whaler hat on the Piscatisqua River. Managed to keep it on my head for 4 1/2 hrs through all that and then loose it 10 minutes from the ramp. Oh well.

John - THAT WAS ME....lol! You missed another great time (that's twice). Next time you are up here, call me.

Man am I tired, and sore but really happy.

Send me your photos pct@maine.rr.com and I will post them in my album.

Thanks everyone!!!!

Guilty as charged, Phil.

As a child of the 70's....I spent way too mant Saturday afternoons watching Acapulco cliff diving on Wide World of Sports and (who remembers this one....)The Thrillseekers.

Thus, the > 6' wake kicked up by the tour boat Prince of Whales was just too tempting.....no damage to boat or body. Small craft advisories....I think not.

Phil - thanks for cruising alongside, and for getting my lazy arse committed to such a great trip.

Nate - thanks for an awesome tour of your area...glad to say the burgers and dogs did not resurface on our suprisingly calm trip back. I was starting to worry leaving the Annisquam.....

PLEASE BE ADVISED that it is still summer.....so enjoy the rest and have a great fall cruising season!

Phil/Brian, glad to hear that your trip home went fine, no broken bones, ruptured spleens, etc. I really thought you were both crazy to commit to such a long trip especially considering the rainy conditions and forecast that had you running into the wind on both legs of your trip!

Mike, Matt, Pete, and Vink, good to see you guys again with your crews.

Thanks everyone for not wimping out due to the weather. I look forward to the next rendezvous.

Great Rendezvous on Saturday.

Glad that so many came out, we made the most of the weather, and any day is a great day to be on the water in a Whaler. Thanks Nate for the great food, and Thanks Phil for getting the word out. Looking foward to coming up to Portland next year.

I hope everyone gets out on the water a few more time this season. The weather is supposed to be nice the rest of the week, and I am heading out sailing for a couple of days.

Blue skies, Pete
