Alas, the time is growing near for yet another gathering of the most prolific and active Boston Whaler owners group on the planet. Ideally, we would like to do something different for most of us and still attract our usual crazy crowd of malcontents for a weekend of fun and mischief on the high seas. So, let's start with a location. Will it be another shot at Venice? Should we do Anclote Key again? The lakes of Orlando? A real St. Johns river cruise? Let's hear the options. Remember it is Winter and while most on this site are merely staring out the window at their snow covered boats, we need to get out and cruise the unfrozen waters of Florida. As usual, we would like to invite any and all to attend. This includes you Great Lakes types,Downeasters,Snowbirds,Jailbirds, and some "left coasters" should make an appearance. Flights to Florida are stupid cheap if you look around. We might even give a silly, worthless prize to the one who travels farthest to get here.(Disclaimer: if you are a snowbird or have just gotten out of the pen in FL you don't get the silly worthless prize)There will be no prize for the "oldest Whaler" as that guy from MarineMax in Sarasota will show up yet again with no food or beer looking for another pair of Boston Whaler binoculars.

Your dog would do that too.... Any chance of gauranteeing good weather for the ride down, so I don't have to spend the "whole" day drinking with Nick and Len.

FNO,
I would consider bringing the Outrage down from Atlanta if you choose a location north of Tampa or maybe the northern end of the St John.

homossasa was a blast- shall we make a return visit w/ the sea cows?

Two things...I think Venice would be great and I think Homo would be great. I think we need a place that is mainly slow speed zones so we all don't bite our lips off from shivering so much if the sun Gods don't look after us. Homo is a hoot and plenty to do. Venice is also another great trip but less to do. Myakka...you nolonger have any votes because you NEVER show up ;) I would love to do the anclote again but I think it might be a tad cold to be running to an offshore island. Then again we could just cruise the canals/river by Stefan and hang at Hooters.

1)Homosasa-but we would have to look into hotel availability 1st(MacRae's).
2)Venice-Hotels should be easy to find but probably not waterfront nor as cheap as above.
3)Stefans-I got the couch!
4)Drink all day at Beercan with Frank, Len & The Meatballs being NOBODY ELSE WILL PROBABLY SHOW!
5)Trash Frank & Sandy's house and cruise the Sante Fe in his 11'.

You guys should consider the east coast. MM21 in the ICW south of SR192 (Melbourne FL) has some great spoil islands to anchor off or beach your boat, barbeque and party. Then a 30 minute ride down the ICW to Sebastion and Capt Hiram's to listen to some live music and eat some steamed clams.

Just a thought.

May want to consider Crystal River, Nice easy place to fish, boat and watch the manatees etc with swimming in big spring for folks who can tolerate 70 degree water The Days Inn just north of Crystal River is a reasonable hotel about $84 a night. I have stayed there) with boat ramp lots of Parking and even in the water storage for a fee, bait shop open most of the year. The canal from the ramp is about a 15-20 minute through a no wake ride but interesting ride to the main river and at the river it is about 3 mile, I think to the Manatee area and Spring or 4 or 5 miles to the gulf, all miles are guesses. There are some other motels around there but some what congested and cost more but are closer to the Springs and Manatee areas not the gulf.

I see from most of your profiles that you guys are primarily west Florida residents. So, you will likely choose a spot closer to where most of you live. That would make the most sense.

Anyway, if you guys ever plan a rendezvous in east cental Florida, let me know. I cant trailer my Conquest, LOA 30'10" beam 10'6". I keep it on a lift and drive it to my destinations. Don't get me wrong, I have traveled all over in it, the Bahamas, down to the Keys, across Lake Okeechobee, through Ft. Meyers and down to Naples and Marco Island. However, when I do that, I stay for at least a week because 1 day each way is needed for travel time. If the weather gets bad, it takes longer.

Take it easy,

Brian

Brian we do have East coast rendezvous. Just did one in August on upper St John's and one in Sept on lower. We have done Ft Lauderdale as well and might do another once season is over. Stuart is done every May/June as well for the last 5 years or more. East coast with their winter speed rules and congestion kinda make it hard for 10 boats to be accomodated like over here. Many people don't boat in the winter on the west so we have our choice of hotels.

I have done both Crystal River and Homo...I like Homo better for a rendezvous. Does not however mean that we can not trailer or ride in the gulf over to the crystal river on sunday if anyone wants to. Homo is so much more quaint and easier to navigate than the crystal and we have the manatee park as well....and Monkey Is.

The immediate response is for Homosassa. Not withstanding that the king, presidente, prime minister, etc has voted for Homosassa, it is a sheltered well appointed area for a winter rendezvous. Let's make it happen, and the decal maker better show up. How about you Northerners, anyone gonna make the trip? Brian, step up to the plate and set up an east coast gathering for the next go around. Here are the basics: pick a weekend, find a hotel(barn), line up some refreshments if the group wants to chip in, and last but not least, secure a place to gather in the evening for libations and food. This can be a restaurant or a BBQ at the chosen hotel.

Seems like my Sargeant of arms is trying to get a stay in the Brig.

Hey I said Venice is #2 but I honestly am thinking about the last Homo trip. The weather was nice but brisk on saturday and cold and drizzly on Sunday. That kind of weather in Venice would not be a real treat. Plus we have been talking about going Homo for years now Frank. What weekend? I can call Mac Rae's and see about President's weekend(16-18) or if booked the previous weekend. How many rooms is what we really need to know. Are you brnging Smitty any Ho's? Bring Ward a chest brace and some brass knuckles as well. I will send out a mass e-mail to all our illustrious members as soon as you give me a date or 2.

Ok...called Mac's and they have 10+ rooms for the holiday weekend and the last weekend(29th) Holiday rates are $100 and $150(efficiency). Does anyone want to try some other Homo hotels? I can check Venice area.

Ok...called 3 hotels in venice, none of which have slips. I asked all 3 if they know of any hotels with slips and that was a negative. I Googled, I tried Hotels.com, Expedia, hotwire, every Florida lodging site I could find and no dice. Short of driving to Venice and looking for one I do not know what else to do.

Anyone live near venice that knows of a hotel with boat slips or ???

I will double check if she meant the weekend of the 29th or the one before. Reason being she said she had 10+rooms on holiday weekend and 10+ on last weekend. We do not have a lot of time on this so let's all put in our vote on which weekend and is it definately Homo? Saturday should be the cutoff and Sunday I will call and reserve rooms. I will be showing up sat AM, but yes some do show up th night before.
RJF posted 01-09-2008 02:59 PM ET (US)     Profile for RJF  Send Email to RJF
Looking at the calander - I would assume that the holiday weekend would be the Sat 16th/Sun 17th (as Monday is MLK day), and the 23rd & 24th are the last weekend in February. If we go with the 29th, then that is the 1st weekend of March.

Homosassa sounds good. I will run this by the wife, and try to attend. If we attend, we will arrive in the AM.

- Is McRae's across from the public ramp.

fno posted 01-09-2008 08:44 PM ET (US)     Profile for fno  Send Email to fno
The 29th is good by me. Far enough out to plan my travel and close enough to my birthday.
Tohsgib posted 01-10-2008 12:10 PM ET (US)     Profile for Tohsgib  Send Email to Tohsgib
Then we will plan on the 2/29-3/2 weekend. I will call Macs and reserve 10 rooms and will post what you need to do and by what date.

The public ramp is AT MacRae's.

The 16-18th was President's day, not MLK which is 19-21 of Jan.

Homo sounds good for us. We should be good for that weekend if the boat is still working. We are taking the Whaler to the Everglades NP the weekend before.

Where do you put in and where do you normally cruise?

Tohsgib e-mail sent. We will be there on the 29th for both Friday and Saturday. I hope we can really make this one, only and hour from our house.
Tohsgib posted 01-11-2008 11:32 AM ET (US)     Profile for Tohsgib  Send Email to Tohsgib
Again Boat ramp is AT MacRae's along with trailer parking and boat dockage. There is usually about 5+ available slips which we leave for the larger boats. Then again some do not want to keep their boats in overnight because they are leaving the next morning. The docks are long so you can usually get 2 boats in one slip. MacRae's is about 4 miles of slow zones to the springs and manatee park(end of the river). The other way(west) is about 6 miles to the gulf and most is on plane. There are also about 8 restaurants and bars within a couple of miles(by boat) from where we are as well. We usually have a BBQ at their BBQ and bomb fire pit....bring what you want. I will try and get some blue crab. Tiki bar has the coldest beer in Citrus Cty and I think are still $1 a draft.

Here is what Gator MacRae sent me:

We have 10 standard rooms open which are $85.00 per night for 1-2 people. Add $10 for additional persons 10 yrs or older. The rooms with kitchens are $125.00 per night plus $10 for the extra people 2 nite min. 6 open. 48 hour cancellation. please call to make reservations 352 628 2922. Our website is macraesofhomosassa.com for general info.
Thank you for your consideration

Ayone hear from Al-A-Buy or know his e-mail? What about Swellmonster, Ward, Smitty, and Sandy's friends from Perry? Stefan I still need your e-mail.

What about Myakka, RJF, Al, Janis, & Swell. I talked to Smitty last night and he is hanging with his Mom that weekend so you can call off the women Frank.

I booked the efficiency but the woman did say she had 5 Standards left. We are ariving Friday afternoon. I do want to try alittle fishing while I am there so if anyone can provide tips on the area it would be appreciated. See you next month.

I Heard these GCBWOA Rendezvous are the biggest and the best. Seem like a lot of folks baling out. We got almost this much interest for the Spring Lanier gathering. Anyone else north of the Florida border want to make the trip down. We just had the second freak snow storm in one week here in Atlanta. The wife is looking forward to the Florida trip. So far we have like 10 boats, that is a pretty good turnout. I think the most we have had was about 20. The "regulars" have not piped in yet and 1/2 of them will show. Plus I have a couple friends who live an hour north that might make it a day trip. Myakka is probably coming as well but his wife is nervous about meeting a bunch of internet freaks...should should not be nervous, she should be VERY scared. Mike on the other hand has actually showed up to I think one of our gigs at beercan, or was it 2. When it gets mid Feb, I will start a rollcall and see who is DEFINATELY showing.

Don't worry the frostbite on the toes and 70' water will guarantee a good turnout. All the regulars will show, even a few of the irregulars might show up. We want some new blood too. How about Jimh or LHG or elealap, fares are cheap, the location is priceless and the food will be to die for.
