OK, All Hands on Deck!!!!! Due to many busy people with many busy schedules we didn't have our GLBWCC Holiday Rendezvous this Christmas 2007....

So as proposed at the Fall Color Tour at Mullet Lake, I hereby resolve we should schedule the "GLBWCC After Holiday / MidWinter Rendezvous" to run in conjunction with the Detroit Boat Show....below is the link for the dates of the Boat Show.

I propose the usual early day field trip to Lockeman's Hardware & Boats, then on to the Boat Show, later in the evening Nancy & I would be more than willing to host an evening get together of food, Libation, and Whaler Style Friendship and camaraderie.

Let me know if you can attend, what dates work best for you, and activity ideas so we can get started planning.....

Please forward this to anyone I may have inadvertantly forgotten....

Do you have a date yet? And is it possible for me to attend if I am working in Grand Rapids MI?

fno,
The more the merrier, you're more than welcome to join in, don't forget to bring some good photographs of you're Whaler & some of your exploits aboard it.
Grand Rapids, Mi is about 136 miles / 2 hours from Farmington Hills, Mi where I live (20 miles from Downtown Detroit & the Boat Show). The Boat show runs from 2/16/08 - 02/24/08, right now I'm waiting for replies and the general consensus as to what date to do this, and who's attending. So go ahead & post what dates are good for you and we'll make a decision when everyone has responded.
As for me I'm on vacation at that time & other than some of my son's Hockey Playoff's I have nothing else planned.

Martha -
Is that all that's going on that day?! I was trying to work around my work travel schedule. I'm in the air on the morning of the 16th and will not likely land in Chicago until around noon - which puts me 6 solid hours from Detroit.

Hello Everyone,
It appears from early returns that the consensus is that the GLBWCC After Holiday / MidWinter Rendezvous will be held in the Greater Detroit area on Saturday February 23, 2008. So those of you that have not replied as of yet, let me know yea or nay on your attendance so we have a number for food planning, tickets, etc, Everyone is welcome so don't be shy....

The plan as it stands now is to make a mid-morning visit to the GLBWCC Club House at Lockeman's Hardware & Boats, then on to the Detroit Boat Show.

Nancy & I will be hosting the evening get together at our home in Farmington Hills, Mi. As soon as possible if participants can send me an e-mail as to what you would like to contribute/bring as far as appetizers, salads, dishes, deserts, etc we can make sure we have a deversified menu and not end up with a bunch salads, you know what I mean......

So let the Game Plan Begin......

Guys,

The 23 is my birthday so I might be able to make the visit to the boat show but, most likely not dinner. BTW, I do not think there is a need to visit Lockemans shop because they should be at the boat show.

home Aside posted 01-14-2008 08:58 AM ET (US)     Profile for home Aside  Send Email to home Aside
I'll contact Dave & see what his schedule is for his booth at the Boat Show, but I don't think the doors open at the Show until at least 12 Noon. The plan, if it happens, would be for a visit to Lockeman's around 9AM for Coffee, then possibly a stop somewhere else prior to the Boat Show, maybe to see the JW Westcott Mail Boat, and then on to the Boat Show.

I'll check these details and post the show hours, whether Lockeman's will be open that morning, etc......

I will try to bring some photographic memorabilia from the GCBWOA last few "fun in the sun" rendezvous. I can't gaurantee any food contribution as I will have been living in a hotel for the last few weeks. I'll see if I can come up with something....

Would the Originator, Founder and current President of this Club (me) happen to be invited also? The Club was founded, incidentally, on Labor Day weekend, 1992, during a 200 mile cruise in our then relatively brand new Boston Whalers, and including "Backlash" and "JimG", running the entire Northern Shore of Lake Huron and the North Channel from Mackinaw City to Killarney ONT and back.

Hi Larry,
Long time no See!!!
Nothing would warm my heart more than to host all of the GLBWCC Originators / Oldtimers (I can say that at 57 years of age) at this function and as guests to the evening get together that I'm hosting at my home...
I sent out personal e-mails to you, the Farnsworths, and JimG in addition to this posting but I'm afraid my e-mail addresses I have for some of you folks were probably outdated.

Hopefully, I'll be hearing from more interested parties who may attend.

I'll be compiling a list of attendee's in the next day or so, so we can get a count and determine who might be able to contribute to the menu list.

I am enjoying a winter afternoon in Michigan. The temperature is in the single-digits around here today. We have a beautiful covering of fresh white snow. The sun is shining, although its warmth is not great. It is the perfect winter setting, and just the right time for a winter gathering. I hope everyone who can will join us on Saturday, February 23, to visit the GLBWCC club house, the Detroit Boat Show, and then the fine evening of festivities at Pat's home.

Pat,

I will gladly take some steaks and burgers along if that sounds good to everyone.

Jimh,

This weather is nice for scenery and a winter rendezvous but I am ready for spring to arrive. It is way too cold here in West Michigan and I haven’t been on my Whaler since last month.

Buckda posted 02-11-2008 08:02 PM ET (US)     Profile for Buckda  Send Email to Buckda
Jim -

What was a fine winter day in East Michigan was a billowing, blowing, whiteout day in West Michigan.

We saw at least 3 head on collisions from folks "crossing the line" in the whiteouts...and countless fender benders from people driving too fast/too slow and rear-ending the car in front in a whiteout.

In between snow squalls, you could see the 12-14 foot waves (steaming in the 0 degree air) smashing into the lighthouse on the North Pier in St. Joseph.

It was a brutal drive home!

Anyway...I hope the weather is nice on the 23rd when I come over for this rendezvous.

Dave

Hello All....
This is what it's looking like for the GLBWCC Post Holiday/Mid Winter Rendezvous on February 23rd.

Homeside - Pat & Nancy - Salmon / Angel Hair Pasta
A to Z - Terry & Donna
Jimh & Chris
Jeff Rohlfing (Erin & Quinton may have to sit this one out)
PeteB88 & Ellen
FNO (alone?)
Leapin Lunker - Terry & Donna ???
Matebosch (Alone?)
Whitewater - Don & Gail McIntyre ???
LHG - Larry Goltz (I'm hoping, Come on over Larry)
Don & Elsa
Cicada - Paul & Suzanne???
Kingfish - John & Katie ???
Spouter / KKdreamer - Jerry ???

As it stands now, the plan is (for those who are available) to drop by Lockeman's in the Morning for a quick visit, coffee & Bagels, donuts, etc...
Then on to the Detroit Boat Show. Lockeman's Owner, Dave Zammit, has graciously donated complimentary tickets for the Boat Show. Then after a post boat show regroup, the evening festivities including food & cocktails will be held at my home.

I would like to get an idea as to what food/drinks everyone will be able to contribute for the dinner, if there's a specialty that anyone wants to bring, please let us know on this thread so we can start to put together a menu so to speak. As far as Drinks I'm thinking BYOB. For my part I was thinking of grilling some Salmon & doing an angel hair pasta W/sundried tomatoes I specialize in. So I'll start the list

I know some of you will be coming from out of town/across State, I'm also going to see what I can find out about local hotels if anyone needs housing, so let me know if any of you need a Hotel room.

I encourage everyone to bring photo's, scrapbooks, stories, of their Whalers, their recent rendezvous, ongoing projects, etc to share with everyone. I've got a couple of tricks up my sleave for the evening....So everyone sign in, let us know if you can make it or not and we'll get this party started.....I look forward to seeing you all.

Thanks for all the replies.

I also heard from Dave Pendleton he's hoping to make the trip from Minnesota, I left him off the list originally because he didn't think he was going to be able to come, but looks like now he may be able to...Welcome aboard Dave....

Also, I was reminded to have everyone attending bring a photo of their Whaler (with or without them aboard) to be put on the GLBWCC Clubhouse Bulletin Board at Lockeman's.

I'll be posting all the names of those who have replied and what they are bringing in a day or so....thanks to everyone

What's the general consensus on start time for the Evening portion of the Rendezvous? I was thinking 7:00PM or 7:30PM, if that's too late a start let me know. I felt those times would enable some regroup/relax time between the boat show and the evening festivities.

Let me know here what you opinions are re: start time for the evening/drinks/dinner....

Pat,
we will call tomorrow. Donna wants to go to Lockmans... She was born and raised in Southfield so she doesn't have a problem driving downtown...

Great time, great people, great weather.

Special thanks to Pat and Nancy for hosting this event at their home again this year. Additional thanks to everyone for bringing such great food (thanks for the Lake Erie Perch and Walleye Jerry!).

The day started, for me, at 4:00 AM CST and a 4.5 hour drive to Lockman's in Detroit. After great bagels, coffee and conversation, we headed on up to downtown Detroit for a brief tour of where Grand Poobah and Webmaster JimH works when he's not grand-mastering this site. (Plus, we got some free parking at the station). A nice walk in warm(er) sunshine to Cobo Hall and an afternoon at the boat show where we had a great time exploring the exhibits and walking all over the boats.

Then, everyone arrived at Pat and Nancy's house for dinner. We dined on a feast fit for a king; shrimp, walleye, perch, barbecue chicken, scalloped potato casserole, spaghetti, asparagus, spinach salad, etc. Not to mention the beer!

Thanks guys.

Dave

Greetings Everyone,
I think we can call this another successful GLBWCC Holiday(albeit Post Holiday)/Mid winter Rendezvous.
We had a nice representation for our visit to Lockeman's, Jimh, Buckda, Jeff Rohlfing, Cicada, Don Jahnke, FNO Frank & Sandy, A to Z Terry & Donna, Mateobosch, Spouter Jerry, and myself. Dave, Dorothy, and Doug Zammit had a nice spread of donuts, bagels, and coffee. Dave gave us a tutorial re: the E-Tec injector system and it's comparison to the old system, interesting stuff...Several new photo's were posted on the GLBWCC Bulletin Board, including of "tohsgib & Draftsman's Wife (Janice of Magic Brush fame)"
Then on to WDIV Channel 4, the domain of Jimh's work world....quite an interesting tour of the facility, FNO looked great doing his weather forcast in front of the Green Screen, some funny stuff....
Boston whaler had a relatively nice display of Models up to the Outrage 320. I have to admit I wasn't really there to look at much else in the way of boats. But I also looked over the Everglades Boats and they are very impressive.
I was a bit dismayed that there wasn't anymore than one vendor for Electronics....
After the show it was time for a short break/re-group, Dave, Matt, Jerry, & I were back to my house. As the others arrived around 7:00PM the group effort produced a nice array of very well cooked Lake Erie Walleye & Perch, it was superb, others in the group served Pulled Pork, Spinach salad, marinaded Asparagus, Angel Hair Pasta, Scaleped Potatoes W/Ham, Ham, Brownies, Cheesecake, and of course Wine, Wine, Wine, Beer, Beer, some more beer, Cosmopolitan's, and more beer....there were slideshows going on several laptops.....it was a very enjoyable day, thanks to everyone who attended and all the delicious fare the contributed.....I'll post some photo's later...
A good time was had by all

It was a long and fun-filled day, with a fine and dynamic group that changed slightly at each venue. After all the boat stores, boat shows, boat talk, and boat slide shows, I am really ready for the 2008 boat season to start in the Great Lakes. I hope it won't be too long before we can all do some actual boating together.

I have to say that my first Whaler rendezvous was a great time! It was nice to put some faces with all the names on this site and have a few days of much needed relaxation.

Thanks again to Pat and his family for taking care of me for the weekend! The food and hospitality were top notch!

Thanks to you guys and esp Pat, my buddy Dwight and I found a few hours to slip down to the show but schedules did not permit staying for the feast. I'm sure it was fun like the other times. Wish we could have stayed.

One more day closer to Summer.

You know that 50th Anniversary 13 looked much better in real life than in the brochure and ad shots.

Sandy and I had a great time with the BLBWCC this past weekend. Lockemans was a special treat. It isn't every day that you go into a hardware store that has so much outboard motor knowledge and history in just about every corner of the place. Too bad it was all about Evinrude/Johnson and didn't apply to me and my Mercs. Interesting none the less.I did get to add to the bulletin board with a photo of the Outrage at Shell Key and one of Nick(Tohsgib) and Janice(Draftmanswife). The boat show was as described by others, lackluster to me, but fun to look around. A highlight for me was the visit to Jimh's lair at the local NBC affiliate TV station. Rounding out the day was dinner at Pat & Nancy's. The food was great and we felt very welcome as the Southern contingent of the evening. We are looking forward to coming back when the snow melts and the ice breaks up and I can catch a ride with some of these folks on the Great Lakes. Rumor has it that there may be a St. Johns river expedition in the planning stage, so there will be an opportunity to return the excellent hospitality.

Man--those TV cameras can really put some weight on you.

By the way, the dinner was fabulous. These guys (or their wives or mothers) can really cook. I was seriously thinking about dropping in at Pat's on Sunday for brunch on the leftovers.

I also agree with Pete about the 50th Anniversary 13-footer--it does look quite good in person and better than it does in most of the photographs of it. They're only making 150 of them.
