14 Whaler owners have come together and plan to cruise around the island of Manhattan on June 7th keeping the 21st open as a rain date. This flotilla welcomes all owners to participate.Currently we plan to meet in the waters around the Statue of Liberty at 10:30 AM and then head up the Hudson. The cruise around the island is expected to take 3 to 4 hours.

I would be very excited to do this. Do you have a launch location in that area or do you launch locally and travel down the East River?

I took that trip last year in my new 190 Montauk. It was wonderful. I started at City Island went down the East River to the Statue of Liberty and then up the Hudson and a right at the Harlem River. It is a whole different perspective on the City.

Jersey City public launch in Liberty State Park is a good place to launch near the statue.

I would love to come down from Vermont and join a group around Manhattan. Have done it myself twice and would think it would be fun in a group. I would launch at the Hazzards launch under the GW Bridge on the NJ side. Been there before an it works for me. Free too. Got to check on the opening of the Spuyten Duyvil railroad bridge. The was some mention about it in the notice to mariners a few weeks ago. Hope to make it.

My brother-in-law who lives in Brooklyn is as interested as I am. If I can get it all together I'll be coming from Boston and would appreciate advice on ramps, where to saty the night before or where I might keep my 170 Montauk the night before and so on. Any suggestions to make this doable would be greatly appreciated. I don't see me being able to drive through Park Slope never mind parking the boat there :) I'd really like to do this as it may very well be a one shot deal and a unique "meeting". Thanks in advance...

In four weeks we'll gather the largest ever collection of Boston Whalers in New York Harbor. The planned cruise has drawn the attention of the people in Edgewater, Fla. who have offered up some trinkets for the event( Tee-shirts,first aid kits,ect.). Plans are to meet from all directions in the waters of the Statue of Liberty around 10:30 AM on 6/7 and head up the Hudson, the cruise should take +/- 3.5 hours. Anyone interested in joining up with a group entering the Harbor from Long Island Sound please contact me via e-mail for planned route times.

gbcbu, Here is what I do from Vermont. I go down to NJ the afternoon before and stay in Orangeburg. There is a Holiday Inn there. Then in the morning go to the ramp under the George Washington Bridge. It is called Hazzards, do a Google search. There has been no fee and lots of parking for cars with trailers only. The route to it is rather convoluted so be careful of the directions.

There is also a lauch ramp in a Yonkers park on the eastern shore of the Hudson at the JFK Marina.

It's run by the city of Yonkers and cost less than $15 last time I checked. Parking no problem, but not overnight.

Just saw this at Whaler Central. I'm going to try and make it with my 170 Montauk.

If I can I will be launching from Norwalk. Veteran's Park is the place I believe. It's right off of I-95. I also think it's a $25 fee if you don't have the season permit.

Whaler Central alluded to a gathering of 'Sound' folk around Mamaronek for the run to the statue. No specific time yet that I saw.

Sounds great! Hope I can get the time... and extra fuel tanks.

What time are you Marine Max folks planning on leaving?

We would like to come, with the Revenge and about six of us. I assume coming from Pa. that Jersey City public launch at Liberty State park is the best spot. Total novice in this area, no charts, but how hard will it be to follow a fleet of whalers anyway! Jim, we aren't concerned about the Whaler give aways, we will be getting some, at a Whaler event the weekend before. Hope it isn't a problem with us tagging along so late and thanks for setting it up!....Jack

Thinking about fuel I decided to sit down with the charts and figure out some distances.

I am thinking of launching from Norwalk.

From Veteran's Memorial Park in Norwalk to the north side of the Statue it's approximately 40.1 nautical miles.

Statue to Statue around Manhattan I'm coming up with 31.4 NM.

If I do the entire trip from Norwalk that's 111.6 NM round trip. I'm thinking of a stopping at City Island to refill one of my 6 gallon cans both directions. Maybe not on the return if not necessary.

For those coming from the LI Sound, breaking off at Hell Gate to Head home a little sooner rather than completing the 'official' loop will save about 13-13.5 NM. Assuming the trip will be done in the clockwise direction that is.

I know there are some guys coming down the Hudson. Where are you planning to launch? The GWB site in Jersey is not good for me. Anyone coming from further north? Just wondering?

Hello, One week, one day and a wake up! Just wondering who else will be leaving from Norwalk, Ct and what time?(I'm thinking just a few befor 0700hrs inorder to be out of the harbor into the sound by about 0720-0730hrs? Figure on giving about 3hours to get down in case any rough patches that we need to slow down for? I'm thinking about crusing speed of about 20kts??? What about the group leaving from Bridgeport and above...any ETA on passing the Norwalk area? Does the group have a VHF channel that planned to moniter? Sound about right??? comments welcomed.

Jim, yes that was me heading out of Norwalk Harbor this past weekend in the "Serenty". 0730-0800 sounds fine it should give a little wiggle room for unexpected delays or slow downs.

Not sure if it will be just my son and myself or if the whole crew (5kids and wife) will join but we are looking forwarded to it.

DLee posted 05-29-2008 11:22 PM ET (US)     Profile for DLee  Send Email to DLee
I'm leaving from Norwalk. I did a 40 NM test run today. Travel time was 2 hours thirty minutes averaging 20 knots with a couple stops to check the charts and make a few notes. Seemed the typical 1' swells out there today. Little windy but beautiful.

What do you think about meeting out at Rounds Beach, right past the R "14" marker at the end of the harbor entrance, or maybe Green's Ledge just west of the islands?

I may peel off at Execution Rocks to top off one of my tanks at City Island. I don't really want to have to go into Liberty Harbor for refueling when we get to the statue. But I may if necessary.

Has anyone else done the math? I came up with 40 NM to the Statue from Norwalk. Someone else I've been speaking with came up with 54 miles? I'm going to check chart measurements.

I think leaving a little sooner than later could be prudent. The first ten miles I did this morning (at 11:30) were a little rough. Although earlier 'tends' to be calmer.

Also, low tide is 9:07am for S. Norwalk, 7.5 tide, so launching earlier is certainly advised.

Dlee ...yes we can meet off round beach and head out from there. More then likely we see each other before then if your heading out from Vertern Park boat ramp. Hopefully we will meet up with Jim's group heading down from Bridgeport.

Seabatical,

I went to the Manhattan event and have a Montauk 170, but it is a 2007. There was another person from RI, from Jamestown like I am, and he has an Eastport I believe (cannot remember if it was a Sakonnet, Nauset, or Eastport). I can be reached at 401-529-7052 if you need to reach me.

Inabanus,

Thanks for the info; I think you are right, it was an older model and might not have been a Montauk. He had a 50 or 70 HP 4-stroke engine on it.

It was a fun conversation on the dock in Wickford as we have been looking a long time for a Montauk 17 and I have used this website to support our research!

We will be on the bay this weekend exploring JT and NWPT in our new (used) Montauk 17; it's a 1998 with a 1997 Yamaha 90 HP 2-stroke.

If you are out and about try 401.374.5294, my cell.

Regards,

Chris
