The Great Chesapeake Bay Swim will be held on Sunday, June 8th 2008 to benefit the March of Dimes. As usual, a fleet of Whalers will provide support to the swimmers and kayakers. There will be two races -- a 1.1 mile race starting and finishing on Kent Island at the eastern foot of the Bay Bridge, and the main event, a 4.4 mile race between the Bay Bridge spans from Sandy Point to Kent Island.
The Whaler fleet generally patrols just outside the swim course. The primary job is to take aboard any swimmers who are unable to complete the race. A secondary job is to patrol for any interfering traffic (mostly that's handled by the USCG and various state and local law enforcement -- in the past they've even had helicopters). A pair of Whalers serve as snack boats, anchored between the bridge spans to provide water, crackers, and bananas to the swimmers.
Most of the Whalers meet at Matapeake State Park on Kent Island, where we launch at around 8:00 AM for the short run to Hemingway's at the eastern foot of the bridge. The 4.4 mile swim is scheduled to begin at 10:00 AM, with the 1.1 mile swim preceding it.
If you would like to participate, contact Scott Leidig by email. If you do not have Scott's email address, contact me or CW member Yiddil. Or, just show up at Hemingway's on Sunday morning.
