This is a great trip. Last year a lot of folks had scheduling problems, so I am going two weeks later. I plan on leaving my Montauk with relatives in Charleston after the Fourth Annual Waccamaw Trip.

In 2008 only two boats made the trip. SWarren was a great guide. It was a pleasure to finally meet him and his Dad (Bullsbay). I will be joined by wife and daughter (11) on this trip. We absolutely must go back to Morgan Island (government research project) and spot a monkey this time. I am hoping to make the return trip by boat in 2009. My stator died and we ended up trailering the boat from Beaufort back to Charleston.

Last year we stayed at:

Country Inn & Suites 843-379-4000

It would be nice to stay downtown Beaufort on the waterfront, however the rooms are pricier. The marina has a loaner car, but encouraged us to take a cab to the hotel. The hotel was fine and almost directly across the street is Gilligan's Seafood and Raw Bar. We had a delightful dinner enjoying the marsh view and some impressive aquariums.

Mark your calendars now.

Great news, David. This might be a good trip to do some tubing. It was hot last year. I think we should plan on bringing a picnic lunch; raft up together halfway through the trip and jump in the water.

Are you going to bring one or two Boston Whalers? I told my daughter she can probably ride in the kids boat. The crazy things that stick. She is still spooked about the story of your girls going airborne :).

Country Inn and Suites (843) 379-4000

I just made my room reservation in Beaufort for Saturday night June 20, 2009.

It is $95.40 with a AAA discount for a standard double.

You can cancel with a 24 hour notice.

Hi Scott,

I am glad you will be joining us. I hope the trip catches on. It is a very pretty ride.

Last year we were supposed to have seven boats, but things came up and they were unable to make it.

I recall reading on CNN.com; Beaufort ranked as of the best places to retire on the water. Its quaintness is a far contrast to all the people in Florida.

Hi David,

I have Nautical Chart 11518.

It's a little hard to read because it's broken down into segments.

Does someone have a better chart ???

Hey Thanks mypilikai. I'll bet you work for Gulfstream.

The chart is still confusing. I had the best luck starting with the upper left corner finding Beaufort and working back to Charleston.

I am making the trip next fri and sat. Plan on sleeping on the boat at the marina. Hopefully the monkeys will be out this year. Gas at 1.79 makes running the 27 a lot more affordable.

Hi Stephen,

Please give us a trip report on your upcoming trip.

You will see my Montauk at Kirk's house (next door to your fishing buddy) after the Waccamaw Trip.

We still could use a great guide. I can probably fumble my through after having made the trip once one way.

I hope this trip catches on. It's a great one.

Good morning all. I spoke to Mick (runpastthefence) on Thursday, and he is interested in trying to make it this year. I am scheduled to work on Saturday but if I can get off I could come up on Friday. Do you plan to leave the dock around 1000 on Saturday?

Coincidentally I unveiled my 1982 15 Sport refurb at this same location, and weekend, back in 2005, while attending the factory appreciation weekend. In 2006, made it north of Beaufort, before my trip was cancelled by my GF at the time. Actually had mounted the bimini for the first time for that trip.

I'd say I've got a 50/50 chance of making this years trip. Better chance of coming alone (or with PITA, my new GR (Golden Retriever)) than with new GF and 11 year old daughter. Standing by. zotcha.

HI zotcha, hope you both can make it.

Last year I launched from Remeley's Point Boat Landing just upstream from the Cooper River Bridge. Parking with a trailer at Remeley's was crowded.

We met just downstream of the Cooper River Bridge at Charleston Harbor Marina Gas Dock at 10:00.

Good to hear from you. Are you retired yet?

I have seen a photo of your new boat. She’s a beauty. We would not be ashamed to have you leading several Whalers to Beaufort. WhalerAce is going to make the Statue of Liberty Trip the same weekend, so he can't lead us. Join us if you can.

Retired! I wish!! I have the lt. blue 23' SeaCraft. I got so many low ball offers I pulled it. I have hopes of a sailboat at some point was the reason for selling. My wife and I have made that trip many, mant times. Typically get a slip at Downtown Marina for a couple of days and stay at Rhett House. Great anniversary trip! I might make the run in June. Wadmalaw Sound is narrow, shallow, but well marked. Just not much room. Marker 110 (I think) running south is entering a narrow, shallow, changing area. After the Edisto bridge Watts Cut is narrow and shallow. The new moon/noon low tide may be a problem if the cruise ship comes through :)
Run the markers carefully at the sweeping left before Fenwick Cut. The entrance to Coosaw River is a little tricky....after you run a little left around the marker you're clear but the next marker is not in sight, look at the chart and run a compass heading. The markers become more visible near Morgan Is. You can pull the paper charts online.

Philip and Kirk got the best hotel deal in Charleston. We just arrived in Charleston from the Waccamaw River Trip (Good Times!).

We stopped at the Masters Inn in Mt. Pleasant (which is very close) to Remley's Point boat ramp and got a killer rate.

Friday June 19, 2009

$49.95

We have a block of five rooms (can get more).

Call 843-884-2814 to reserve your individual room.

I have one. The remaining confirmation numbers are:

189832
189833
189834
189835

The hotel is a little dated, but the location is perfect.

Philip, please fill in the details for me.

Friday evening June 19, 2009
Arrive Charleston. Stay at the Masters Inn in Mt. Pleasant ($49 plus tax etc, 843-884-2814) which is 3 miles from downtown Charleston.

Saturday morning June 20, 2009
Launch the boats at Remley's Point boat ramp which is just a few blocks from the Masters Inn. What time will we try to depart the dock? Picnic lunch while underway? Morgan Island?

Saturday evening June 20, 2009
Arrive Beaufort. Is there a public dock in the historic section where we can dock and walk around a bit? Then we will boat a mile or two (?) over to a marina (do we need to reserve space?) and dock the boats and check into the the Country Inn & Suites (843-379-4000) where rooms are about $100 per night. We will have dinner at a restaurant near the marina and/or we can taxi over to the historic section to hear some live music (after dinner?).

Sunday morning June 21, 2009
Boat back to Remley's Point boat ramp in Mt. Pleasant, just 3 miles from Charleston.

Is that the plan?

I like it. Just curious, how much do you think it would cost us if we were to stay in the downtown historic part of Beaufort?

WhalerAce posted 04-30-2009 02:59 PM ET (US)     Profile for WhalerAce  Send Email to WhalerAce
David,

To answer some of your questions:

The public dock in Beaufort IS the Historic Section. The Hotel across the street from the Marina is about $259/night. The Marina has a courtesy van that you can use to go to other hotels.

The Marina will take reservations, but you usually don't need them.

Like I said, the historic district is all around the Marina. You can walk several blocks either direction and be in the antebellum days.

You will also pass right by the City (Municipal Marina) on the way out, so you might want to stop there for a couple of hours, as well, and see some of historic Charleston (or maybe come back a couple of hours early on Sunday to do that).

Like Georgetown, bring bugspray and non-scented deodorant.

And we may end up going on this trip instead of the Statue of Liberty. I am not sure if the Temptation will be repaired in time to drag it up to New York.

Ace, maybe I need a cup of coffee but I still don't have this clear in my mind.

Is this correct:
On Saturday morning when we leave Mt Pleasant we will pass by the Municipal Marina and historic Charleston on the way to Beafort? That is great! So we can dock the boats temporarily at the Charleston Municipal Marina and have lunch at some cute restaurant in Charleston? Marti will love that.

In Beafort, we will dock the boats at a marina that is in the historic section? We will then take a courtesy van three miles to our $100/night hotel rather than walk to a $259/night hotel. Is that correct?

If everyone arrives early enough on Friday we could meet for dinner downtown Charleston and walk around a little. It's also fun to go Red's at Shem Creek; get Peel and Eat Shrimp and beer (maybe this is too much of a college party spot).

I would say we shoot for a 10:00 AM departure. We will be going under the Cooper River Bridge which is quite a marvel and then around the Charleston Peninsula and fantastic homes on the Battery.

We should find a halfway spot and raft together for lunch. We can also jump in the water. It should be hot outside. We definitely want to try to document a monkey siteing on Morgan Island.

The marina in Beaufort has a loaner car. It was a Ford Focus Wagon last year. They did not want us taking it to the hotel overnight. They recommended that we take a cab to the Country Inn and Suites. It was about 3 miles.

Directly across from the Country Inn and Suites is Gilligan's Seafood and Raw Bar. We had a nice meal there. It has a nice view of the marsh and nice aquariums to look at.

As for as night life, I think we would have to take a cab back into town or huff it about three miles.

Private boats can still visit Ft. Sumter but $1.00 charge with very limited dockage. You must let the tide hold your boat so an incoming is best. The dock ladder is not for the faint of heart :) California Dreaming in Chas. has dockage except at really low and has good eats. It's less "party" than Shem Creek. There's also Crab House on Wappoo Cut with no low water worries. (One year old info.)Beaufort: Luthers is the better eats for $$, Saltus is the best for $$$$, IMHO. The "strip" is very small and the economy has taken it's toll as well. Still our favorite place! I highly recommend a carriage tour.

Last year I left my tow vehicle and trailer at the parking lot at Remley's Point Boat Ramp.

I feel it it is pretty safe. The parking lot was very full. I had to back into a space in the grassy area.

Friday evening June 19, 2009
Arrive Charleston. Stay at the Masters Inn in Mt. Pleasant ($49 plus tax etc, 843-884-2814) which is 3 miles from downtown Charleston.

Around 6-7 PM drive cars two miles across the new Cooper River Bridge, drive along the historic Battery (if you own a home on the Battery you are someone special), have dinner at Fleet Landing, then walk around Waterfront Park, and get a photo of the Pineapple Fountain.

Saturday morning we will do a similar tour via Boston Whaler, so the layout will all fall into place.

Saturday morning June 20, 2009
Launch the boats at Remley's Point boat ramp which is just a few blocks from the Masters Inn. We will shoot for a 10:00 AM Departure. Picnic lunch while underway (around 1-2 PM). Raft together and jump in the water (weather is gonna be hot). Motor to Morgan Island (Monkey Island, government research project, must get a photo of monkeys to prove we are NOT telling tall tales).

Saturday evening June 20, 2009
Arrive Beaufort. Public dock is the historic section and dock the boats. Shuttle back and forth with the loaner car to the Country Inn & Suites (843-379-4000) where rooms are about $100 per night.

Walk across the street for dinner at Gilligan's Seafood and Raw Bar.

After dinner shuttle people downtown with loaner car or take taxi van down town Beaufort.

Sunday morning June 21, 2009
Time and weather permitting take a carriage ride downtown Beaufort.

12 Noon go to sandwich and ice cream shop for lunch

Boat back to Remley's Point boat ramp in Mt. Pleasant, just 3 miles from Charleston.

None of this is set in stone. Just a starting point for a great weekend trip

SC Joe, can you advise us about some of the potentially problematic spots due to low water and/or shoaling along the route noted in the link below? I figure for our size boats we should be OK but probablly should be cautious through a few of the cuts.

There should be NO problems navigating this route. Just stay inside the channel markers. And on this river, even if you do "ground", it is just pluff mud. Lighten the boat by getting out, and you can push it off the mudbank. Or, with the extra boats, we can pull you off real easily.

2.) Clementine - Quinn Jenkins

3.) GAwhale - Philip Lachmayr

4.) Latest Temptation - Ace Mccreight

5.) Matoaca - Scott Appleton

I will be driving to Charleston on Thursday June 18.
We plan a boat day on Friday June 19; maybe do some knee boarding and skiing with the kids. I am getting antsy to take my boat out.

I just googled the definition of va·ca·tion. The first definition I found begins, "freedom from any activity; rest."

I am not sure that "vacation" is the correct term for this type of trip. However, I will only be bringing two boats this time so that is definitely a reduction in activity.

Will this be an adventure? Websters defines [b]adventure[b] as "the encountering of danger; a daring, hazardous undertaking; an unusual, stirring experience, often of a romantic nature; a venture or speculation in business or finance; a liking for danger, excitement."

Anyway, just so you know, we are not pikers. I just called the Beaufort Country Inn and Suites and upgraded our room. We will be living it up in a suite for $113.

Saturday night I plan to have an adventure on my vacation.

See you then!

Adventure is a good word although I certainly don't see this as a dangerous trip.

I once read that Charleston is the crown jewel of South Carolina. She is a beautiful walking city with lots of shops and restaurants. No building can be built taller than the church steeples. My wife is from Charleston. The dream is to retire there one day.

We will probably arrive Mt Pleasant about 6 PM Friday. We are going to want to walk around Charleston after that. Is anyone else motivated to walk around Charleston or do you want to stay close to the hotel? What were the dinner plans/options?

I am going to suggest we meet for dinner at 7:00 PM Friday at:

Fleet Landing Restaurant & Bar
186 Concord Street
Charleston, SC 29401

We will be staying at the Masters Inn Thursday and Friday. I can borrow my in-laws minivan and we can all pile in that for the trip downtown. That way you won't have to unhook the boats from the tow vehicles (David).

After dinner we will walk around Charleston.

However, I'm more than willing to help out with anything I can. Specifically, if anyone needs any last-minute repairs before the trip, I'll be at our shop on James Island. Feel free to call 843-607-3927, or email me at the address in my profile (I will receive it instantly).

I made this run Sunday with my Dad (75). You may want to consider reservations at Downtown Marina in Beaufort. The city dock is only 4 boats long without rafting. The back side is shallow and usually full of dinghys. I recommend a slip close to the showers/store. If it's not a fishin day I may ride with you for a while....If you'll allow a SeaCraft in the bunch :)

Hey thanks for the info. I will call the downtown marina tomorrow. It looks like there will be five Boston Whalers.

Please join us. I would love to see your boat in person.

Last year we met just downstream of the Cooper River Bridge at Charleston Harbor Marina Gas Dock at 10:00 AM. That sounds like a good plan for this year. They also have a good restroom.

I called the Downtown Marina and made reservations for five Boston Whalers for Saturday June 20. It is $1.75 per foot per night. My 17 foot boat will be $29.75.

How far is that from the boat ramp near the hotel?
GAwhale posted 06-17-2009 07:53 AM ET (US)     Profile for GAwhale  Send Email to GAwhale
Half a mile (I would guess).

Remley's Point Boat Ramp is just North of the Cooper River Bridge.

Charleston Harbor Marina Gas Dock is just South of the Cooper River Bridge. Also right beside the Charleston Harbor Marina is the Yorktown World War Two Aircraft Carrier (in the mud) which is an awesome sight.

Charleston Harbor Marina should be easy to spot. It is right next to an air craft carrier.

Will we hail each other on VHF channel 16 or will we not use 16 and just stay on some other channel like 69 or 71?

On the Waccamaw Trip we stayed on channel 71.

I think we should do that again. It seemed to work well.

Above is the ten day forecast for Beaufort, South Carolina.

Great boating weather. Bring sun block and keep your bimini up. It’s gonna be HOT.

I suggest wearing a bathing suit. We’ll stop a on the way and jump in the water.

Phil, we will not be joining the group for dinner on Friday night. We plan to launch our boat at Remleys as soon as we arrive in Charleston on Friday, motor over to Charleston Marina and keep it there for the night. So don't look for us at Remley's point on Sat morning, we will be at the Marina in the morning on Saturday.
Also, my daughter Kate and her boyfriend, William may join us for the trip. If you recall, Kate met up with us in Georgetown.

Scott,

The Marina next to the USS Yorktown (CV-10)is the PATRIOT's POINT Marina. That is the Cooper River. The Charleston Harbor Marina is on around past the Battery (where was begun the War of Northern Agression) and on the Ashley River side.

BTW, the confluence of the Ashely River and Cooper River meet to form the Atlantic Ocean. (Honest, that is what we learned in Seventh Grade State History).

To avoid any confusion let me clarify which marina we are talking about. In my previous post in one line I mistakenly referred to the "Charleston Marina". I meant the Charleston Harbor Marina, not the Charleston City Marina. According to Phil's description I assume we are meeting Here:

http://marinas.com/view/marina/ 4393_Charleston_Harbor_Resort_%26_Marina_Mount_Pleasant_SC

Charleston Harbor Marina
24 Patriot's Point Rd.
Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina 29464

Office: (843) 284-7062
Mobile: (843) 297-2949 or (843) 297-2948

Phil, would you please confirm?

We are looking forward to it! We will be heading for Charleston in about 26 hours.

Please remind me of your wife's name, Philip.

It looks like the attendees will be:

•Ace (WhalerAce from Summerville, SC) & Joy on their 25' Temptation, Latest Temptation.
•David (David Jenkins from Durham, NC) & Marti on their 1974 Outrage 19, Anna Jane.
•Philip (GAwhale from Fayetteville, GA) and his wife and daughter Hannah and his nephew Kirk on Philip's 17' Montauk, Georgia Whale.
•Scott (sapple from Richmond, VA) & Mary and their daughter Kate and her boyfriend William on Scott and Mary's 2007 Montauk 170, Matoaca.
•Quinn and Anna (from Durham, NC) on their 1977 Sport 15, Clementine..

Quinn and Anna would be thrilled if Hannah or Kirk want to join them.

Kate and William, if you want to jump around from boat to boat we would all be delighted to have you on board.

See you soon!

Yes, this is the correct meeting place (restroom-yes).

If you look at the second photo down from the right, you can see the aircraft carrier.

Remley's (boat ramp) is usually busy with not much docking, parking, or bathrooms.

------------

We will hit the road around noon today. My Montauk is sitting at Kirk's house, so that is one less thing for me to get ready. Vacation is here at last. I am psyched.

Hi David,

My wife's name is Maggie. She will join us for dinner Friday night and help launch and retrieve the boat, however she decided to stay and have father's day lunch with her family :(

I know Kirk and Hannah will have way more fun on the kids boat.

The weather forecast on the radio has been that the temperature will be in the lower 100s on Saturday, with the Heat Index around 110. Chance of rain around 20%, although we have been having hellacious (I made that up) thunderstorms during the late afternoon and evenings.

Be sure to bring plenty of water, ice, and cool clothes.

Putting the boat together now (played hookey from work).

See y'all Friday night!

Yea, Maggie!

Ace, my weatherman tells me that on Saturday we will have a high of 98 and a low of 82. Sunday the high is expected to be a mere 93 and the low will be 77. Under the Bimini top cruising along at 22-25 mph it will feel cooler than that. I don't know if there is an in-the-shade, cool breeze index, but I think we will be alright.

I am at Robert's house. The boat is gassed up and ready to go. We are going to do some knee boarding and mess around on the water.

I saw sapple's boat parked at the motel (no sign of him).

I will be cleaned up for dinner at 7:00 PM at the Fleet Landing.

Enjoy the water. Last night the WeatherGuy said that the Harbor water temperature is 85 degrees. But he also said that tomorrow's high is going to be 102, with Heat Index of around 112.

Be safe! See you tonight -- we have to stop by West Marine on the way into town.

While driving past the "round Holiday Inn" today, I saw a twin engined (suzukis maybe?) larger Whaler (Maybe 23'?). It had a large two word name on the sides of the hull, but for the life of me I can not remember what it was.

Were they joining your trip?

I'll be out tomorrow in the Chs harbor, but probably after y'all leave. Be careful out..it's projected to be HOT..like in the upper 90's, so with our humidity, that can give a heat index in the 3 digits. And watch for the mean afternoon thunderstorms, too. Save yesterday, we have had one everyday for the last two weeks. They can get bad!!

Hey SC Joe,

No that boat was not with us.

Ace - Temptation with Twin Yamaha 200

sapple - Montuak 170 90 four stroke Merc

David Jenkins - 19' Suzuki 140

- 15' with Yamaha 70

Gawhale - Classic Montauk 90 two stroke Merc

I am at the Country Inn and Suites in Beaufort right now.

We had a great trip yesterday. LOTS of sun. We stopped several times to jump in the water and pulled up on a sand bar for lunch. Dinner was at a great seafood restuarant on the water. We managaed to get 14 people in two cabs (kind of like the clown act at the circus with the VW).

We will try for Monkey Island today. Yes, this place really exists. Looks like more sun. Its gonna be a great day.

What a fun weekend! We did not want to come home! We wished we could have spent a couple of more days and gone to Savannah as well. We enjoy walking around the sea ports as much as we like the ride down the ICW. It was all fun. I wish I took more photographs. I especially needed to take a picture of Kirk dancing with two women who were 10 years older than him. Got to run, More later,

My family is still on vacation here in Charleston. I'll give the short version. Others can fill in the details.

We departed Beaufort at 11:00 AM Sunday. Temperature was 81 degrees.

Ace and Joy said their good byes. His twin 200's wanted to run and they took off ahead.

The other four boats cruised together. At the end of Port Royal Sound we decided not to make the run to Morgan Island (Monkey Island). Could someone from CW please post a photo of a monkey to prove we are not telling Tohsgib Tales.

We anchored for lunch. The currents were amazing. I could not out swim them.

At Wapoo Cut we said good byes to Scott, Mary, Kate, and William. Kate said she is hooked on these CW Trips. We all agreed, we want to join Tohsgib's gang on a Homasassas Trip.

Three boats motored around the Charleston Peninsula and under the Cooper River Bridge. At Remely's my boat said good bye to David's gang. They had a long drive back to Raleigh Durham.

The crew on the GAwhale motored up stream, had a bite to eat, and jumped in the water one last time. On the container dock was moored the Maersk Danbury. I was thinking this could be the ship pirated in Somalia. I just checked google. It was actually the Maersk Alabama. Maersk has 600 (+) owned & chartered container ships, including some of the largest in the world. It was fascinating watching her get loaded. One of the open containers on top had a big boat on a trailer with three wheels on each side. There was a worker on the dock and we waved to him. He just pointed out to sea. I felt a little bad. I suppose for safety and security they really don't want boats getting close.

Great trip. A good time was had by all.

Did you see the monkeys this year? Saw your boat over in shemwood last week. My buddy is fishing his mako tomorrow. Sounds like yall had fun. I was out yesterday afternoon in the harbor and up the wando on my 27. Think I may sell it and get either a smaller whaler or buy a friends 31 contender.

Next time you are in town with your boat, head up the wando and take left after bridge and go up Ralston creek. Beautiful houses and scout boats. Steve Potts owner of scout lives on that creek and all his neighbors have scouts. There are two nice older whalers on docks though.

We saw no monkeys, Stephen. I think that Philip was pulling our leg about the whole monkey thing. But his wife and daughter are delightful and we did not want to challenge his monkey tale in front of them. We did see lots of dolphin, though. And we saw a boatload of beer drinkers get pulled over by a police boat.

We are about to hit the road for Atlanta.

I will have to check out those homes in Ralston Creek next year.

First round of photos are out. Maggie's on the ball.

We had a long, hot, boring drive back to Atlanta. Kirk used to live in Augusta, GA. We dropped him off there with some of his friends on the way.

My Montauk is sitting in my drive way for one night until she goes back to West Point Lake. It was nice to drink a beer (2) and daydream watching her all cleaned up in the driveway this evening.

Philip, is there a way to look at the pictures without having to register?

Also, one thing that we did notice on the way back was the LARGE NUMBER of Whalers in and around Beaufort. It used to be like that in Charleston, but not so much anymore, I guess since Scout is based in Charleston (Summerville).

Anyhow, sorry we had to cut out, but we had a lot to do before we left for Maryland (which, by the way, has GREAT weather right now). Glad everyone made it back safely.

Looking forward to next year already!

Have fun in Maryland.

I'm not sure how snapfish works. I sent the photo album to everyone on the trip individually. Hopefully that works.
