I'll be attending a reunion in Avon Park the first weekend of October. After breakfast Sunday 10/4 I'm on my own for about 2 weeks. My 13 Whaler will be in tow, would like some suggestions on where to go exploring, rivers, lakes, and inshore areas. Plan on some camping some motels. So places to go, things to do?
Regret having to miss the Lanier Fall Rendezvous.
Thanks, George

George,

Sebastian Inlet state park is very nice. It's not far at all from where you'll be, just northeast of Avon Park, on the coast. Great place to fish for snook and redfish. There is a boat ramp, etc.

Also, Captian Hiram's is a great spot to have some seafood a cold beer and listen to some live music.

The Indian River is a fun place to run around on a boat. There are numerous spoil islands where you can beach the boat, have lunch and cast a fishing rod.

I live about 17 miles north of the inlet on the Indian River. You can shoot me an email if you have any questions about the area.

Not familiar with that coast but teh ICW will provide plenty of fun for you. Also maybe a day trip to the St John's river.

George,

I just realized that there are two Avon Parks in Florida. There is one near Sebring FL. and another near Ft. Lauderdale. I had assumed that you were going to the Avon Park near Sebring. If so, you are about 1 hour and 45 minutes from Sebastian.

If you're going to the Avon Park near Ft. Lauderdale, you should most definitely trailer your boat to the Florida Keys.

If by Sebring...e-mail me as you are about an hour+ away from the Gulf.

Avon Park near Sebring is where I'll be. Looks like it's midway between both coasts. Had plans to do both. I had considered going to the East Coast first then heading west.

Brian, Sebastian Inlet Park is just what I wanted, a couple of days camping, a night at Captain Hiram's then on to the West Coast.

Nick, I was thinking about Cortez,Longboat Key area then on to Homosassa Springs, Crystal River and the Suwannee.

Thanks, George

George,

If you're at Sebastian, get some live shrimp and do some night time snook fishing. That's one of the best spots in the state for snook. Be sure to get a local chart. There
are a lot of cool places to explore. Be advised, in that area there is a lot of skinny water.

FYI: There are 2 parks at Sebastian. One is Sebastian Inlet State Park (on the south side of the inlet). The other is Longpoint Park. Both are nice. I already sent you the link on the first one.

Here's the link for Longpoint:

There is also a nice jetty at the inlet for fishing:

Longboat is where Beercan is. Len and I are usually there every weekend. We can also do a Manatee river excursion before you head up to Homo.

Nick, I will be taking you up on your offer. I was wondering
where beercan was, could not find it on my map.

Thanks, George

Probably not on the map, look for Longboat pass(inlet) and that is where it is(south side).

I've never been there, but if I'm not mistaking, this is beercan island:

after you hit the link, wait for about 5 seconds and you get a view of the island from the bridge.

Nick can let me know if I am incorrect.

Yup...see that marker, it is now about 20 feet from the water at low tide. Island just keeps growing. The reason you don't see me is because I am parked under the bridge in the shade.

Nick, is crossing the mouth of Tampa Bay doable in my 13 on a Sunday afternoon? I was thinking if I get to FT Desoto early I would make the run down to Beercan.

Rich, I boat more than fish but always carry a rod just in case.

Thanks, George

It is doable and only a few miles but it can get a tad sloppy. The good thing is this time of year the wind is usually either east or west so you should never be riding into it, just aside it back and forth.

Nick,

You're not drinking beer under the bridge by any chance?

Only N/A...don't want to upset the law abiding folks on this site.

Didn't see any beer cans on the beach, they must be under the bridge.
Nick, What do think time wise, any no wake zones?

George

Depends on the conditions but under an hour. Only no wake zone is at the Cortez bridge and 200' just before beercan.

George,

You are in luck as far as the forecast goes! Sebastian will be really nice for the next several days. With this forecast, there's no reason not to go ahead and poke outside the inlet and run around a bit in the ocean.

SUNDAY NORTH WINDS 5 TO 10 KNOTS BECOMING EAST IN THE AFTERNOON. SEAS 1 FOOT. A LIGHT CHOP ON THE INTRACOASTAL WATERS. SLIGHT CHANCE OF SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS.

MONDAY EAST WINDS 5 TO 10 KNOTS. SEAS 1 TO 2 FEET. SLIGHT CHANCE OF SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS.

TUESDAY SOUTHEAST WINDS 5 TO 10 KNOTS. SEAS 1 TO 2 FEET. SLIGHT CHANCE OF SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS.

It's really calm right now. Take a look:
