I'd like to try and be present for this, a pre turkey river run?

We would be interested in atending and could make it a day trip from Tampa. Is there a better place than Homosassa in November?

What river?

Homosassa is in March.

Alafia River, my back yard for forty some years. Three river bars and a natural fresh water spring.

Or the Hillsborough River thats only ten minutes from the mouth of the Alafia. Plus Tampa Bay has two of it's own beer can islands within minutes of the Alafia ramps.

Tohsgib posted 10-14-2009 03:18 PM ET (US)     Profile for Tohsgib  Send Email to Tohsgib
Alafia would be cool. And those who want an extended run can go around from my house to his, probably about an hour cruise.
stefan posted 10-16-2009 02:17 PM ET (US)     Profile for stefan  Send Email to stefan
taht works for me, I can launch at Lowry Park, or Rick's on the Hillsborogh and cruise to Alafia
dneal33 posted 10-16-2009 03:36 PM ET (US)     Profile for dneal33  Send Email to dneal33
The Alafia area would be a great place. If the winds are down it opens up the whole bay area for smaller boats. My 17 Newport can deal with just about anything the bay can throw out. I was out in the middle of the bay twice this week and had a one foot chop going on ( four grouper each day).
Plus the Hills. River and Alafia give great protection if it is rough. Tides should not be a problem ( only at my canal at extreme low).
Nick it is 22 miles from the Sky Way bridge to my dock. I can be there in 45 minutes on a good day.
Very few slow zones in the area called south shore lately.

Nice areas to cruise out in the bay or up in the rivers. Lots of natural scenery and places to stop.

Stefan, I remember going to Lowry Park when it was free in the late sixtes , they always had free concerts on sunday afternoons. Man did we learn some bab habits there.
And have taken many a date to Ricks on the river for sunday brunch and on to the beercan islands to party and go to the springs to cool off.

I can be the unoffical tour guide if needed. I know every foot of water from the Gandy to the Sky Way.Know were the fish are also, but can leave the fishing gear at home.
I know of at least 3 other whalers that will crawl out with us.

Dave

What about a date or two so I can see if I can come too.
Tohsgib posted 10-19-2009 01:11 PM ET (US)     Profile for Tohsgib  Send Email to Tohsgib
Frank...how about the weekend before or after Turkey Day? Any other dates are fine with me as well but I figure everyone would be home then.

I can get to the skyway in less than a half hour usually.

zotcha posted 10-19-2009 08:53 PM ET (US)     Profile for zotcha  Send Email to zotcha
In a classic 15? I have the weekend before off, and could possibly get Friday off. Long Boat condo connection has gone "POOF"! So much for the memories...and the manatees. Will make it down for one of these one days. When I make it, I want to eat/bring home a snook! Missed the season by a week or so last time!
dneal33 posted 10-20-2009 03:21 PM ET (US)     Profile for dneal33  Send Email to dneal33
Zot, whatever date we come up with I'll catch a few fresh snook and have them on hand. Never frozen, They are better than fresh grouper.
Snook are easy to hook but it's very hard to bring them inside the boat, like a bass on steriods. I,ll email you a pic of a recent catch. I'm not that good at posting in this format.
As far as a rendezvous date, Im always here in the Alafia.
zotcha posted 10-20-2009 03:54 PM ET (US)     Profile for zotcha  Send Email to zotcha
Thanks David, I got your email. I've got one 42" under my belt, wade fishing up to my chest in the dark. Hit like a freight train! Hard to believe they are better eating than catching! I'd really like to make it back down there. Have a standing invitation to Hernando Beach trolling for grouper, trying to schedule. Where is Alafia?
dneal33 posted 10-20-2009 04:23 PM ET (US)     Profile for dneal33  Send Email to dneal33
The Alafia river is on the southeast shore of Tampa Bay. Alafia means river of fire in old Indian lingo as we have alot of natural phospate in the water. I can go out at night and swirl a pole in the water and get glowing trail patterns from the movement.

Google it up ,it's a pretty cool river with alot of history. Back as kids 50 years ago we would find arrow heads near shore and mastadon (fossils) teeth by snorkeling down the river.

Indians used to live all over this area.

Tohsgib posted 10-23-2009 12:52 PM ET (US)     Profile for Tohsgib  Send Email to Tohsgib
Dates anyone????
dneal33 posted 10-24-2009 01:51 PM ET (US)     Profile for dneal33  Send Email to dneal33
Im always here and always ready to boat if we want to do this in the Tampa Bay area.

Many other places to lanch other than the Alafia, but the best ramp on the Alafia is know as Williams park, right off of highway 41 in Gibsonton. It has a no wake zone 3/4 of a mile on ethier side of the ramp but it is a six lane deep water ramp with plenty of parking.

We can find grub on the river or bring it or cook burgers and dogs at my place. We have enough room to tie up 10 to 15 Whalers.

Looking foward to the boating if we can work out a date. Any date is good with me.

Dave

Either or is fine with me. If I come the weekend before T-day, I might need the whole week off to recover.

Damn Len, and I wanted to be just like you! I have an excellent opportunity on a 2008 #175 of 250 Ltd. Edition of a Porshe Boxster! Some orange that almost matches my brothers Jersey Speed Skiff! Bad A$$!!!

Just have to liquidate my '02 HD and my classic '82 15 Sport!!! I was looking forward to running the track! Still may be able to make the pre-T-Day run. Anyway, enjoy Italy and best to Margit from the Three Amigos. zot.

Don't worry kids...nobody will show up anyway as usual. Frank, Dave and I will just have to drink all the beer.

That will work Nick.
That is a great time of the year for a run around this area, not to hot or cold. I do know the area well and we can go ethier of the four directions and have a great time.

I will bring at least one more Whaler and will try to find Richard and his wife Joan( gry8ter) I think was his stage name. He has a home a 1/4 mile up the river.

All of the local Whaler folks should try and make this trip. Im open to go any where in the bay area that others wish to go and it really is a pretty cool place to boat.

Be sure to bring your cameras, lots of photo opps.

Im a definite go. I have enough dirt on my buddies that they will show.
Tides and weather are not a factor as there are plenty of places to go.
Should we permit my brother with my old 1976 17+ McKee Craft to go?

I am going to try to make it. It depends on how fast I can get there. I teach a martial arts class until 10am but the ramp is only a few miles from my house. Change, hook up and go and I should be there before 11am.
Tohsgib posted 11-10-2009 12:54 PM ET (US)     Profile for Tohsgib  Send Email to Tohsgib
No problem Erik. I always say 10am but we rarely ever leave the ramp before 11:30 depending on ramp and crowd. Heck I rarely ever get there before 11am.

In my backyard and I have 2 weddings to run on Sunday which requires working on that Saturday.
Damn!
dneal33 posted 11-10-2009 03:53 PM ET (US)     Profile for dneal33  Send Email to dneal33
Im still good to go. Low tide will be around noonish. That will make no difference in the river or Tampa Bay, but depending on the wind I may have to get my Newport out of my canal around 9am.

The Alafia ramp at Hy. 41 ( Williams Park) can handle six boats at a time, so backups and space for parking will not be a problem.

If it's not crappy out in the bay I may just run out to the Bahia Beach reef and troll for grouper untill I hear that you guys are near the ramp.

I can also move my Whaler to the outside of the dock and make it any time. That sounds odd ,but it's just shallow under my lift. Last week the north wind pushed the water out towards the gulf alot.
We have two bars for the locals and one biker bar for every one within four miles of the ramp. All have some type of food, burgers and such.

Im still good to go. Will have one, most likely two more boats. Total of three boats and six or more crew members.
I will be some where on the water around 8 or 9 am , the bay was glass flat on Wensday . Limited out on grouper fast and had to go home early.
Give me a call when you get close to the ramp ( 30 min.)

3 boats coming and one passenger meeting at the ramp as far as I know. 6 boats is not too bad, would be better if the rest here were not such wimps ;)

Maybe we need some prizes, oldest Whaler ( mines a 1976, but Nick has me by a year).
Closest to the ramp can win a warm bottle of spit.
First to fall down.
Last to fall down.
Most likely to not show.
Any way I will see ya in the am.
It was foggy as all crap this morning , but gone around 9 am.

Make it the smallest Whaler contest and I'll bring my 9' I just bought.
Tohsgib posted 11-20-2009 01:13 PM ET (US)     Profile for Tohsgib  Send Email to Tohsgib
Dave my 19' is also a 76 but I am bringing my 13' which is a 81. I could however bring my 1969 Squall. My first boat was a blue Squall that I got in 1977. Boats back then did not have titles or HIN plates and sailboats did not need to be registered so I never knew what year it was. Mainly because Al Gore did not invent the internet yet so I could not e-mail Chuck Bennet. Whne I did register it in 1978 to put an outboard on it they not only "called" it a 1978 model but ironically my reg # were like NJ 1978 DC.

Good times! We had 6 boats but in spurts so it was basically Dave and me(5-7 people total). Had a great time saw some cool stuff and went to some great bars with HOT wings. He who snoozed definately lost. We will DEFINATLEY do this run again and hit the springs....mark your calenders for early summer. Thanks again Dave and tell Bob to finish my box!!!

PS the only Mercury was towed back to the ramp in the first 5 miles....just for LHG.

dneal33 posted 11-23-2009 04:47 PM ET (US)     Profile for dneal33  Send Email to dneal33
It was a good time. We did not cover very much of the area, but it's a good start :).
I met 4 new members , Brian , Tom , Eric and his son. All were great folks. My fishing buddy Bob went with me ( extra body for the fish limits) Ted , up the hill Bill and Fred showed up in the 86 Montauk
Nick was Nick,great pres.
Sorry to Tom , as I grouped him into my crew as yoyos, I think he understood.
I read about a warrent on a short order cook on the river. The wings were the hottest I have ever seen.
If Nick can photoshop flmes coming out of Brians mouth, that would be the truth.
Looking forward to the next meet.

I'll try to get them posted in the proper manner Eric. I only have about five. I can post photos on other sites , but have not tried ContinuousWave yet. I will leave out the merc on the hook pic. As much as I love towing mercs back to the ramp I must respect my fellow local Whaler members.
Any time Nick. Time went by so fast on Saturday, it was close to dark before we knew it.
Sunday we had a small crowd with fried grouper, dogs, burgers and an assortment of other food. Plus a butt kicking from the N.O. Saints out at the bar out back....
