I propose a trip to Beaver Island, Michigan and the surrounding port towns and islands in the area for May or June of 2010. Beaver Island is a populated island that offers many motel and restaurant accommodations as well as golf and hiking trails. I would like to spend a few days fishing and exploring the waters around the island while spending my evenings on the island enjoying good food and and a warm bed.

Not far to the South of Beaver Island are the Manitou Islands and the Sleeping Bear National Lake shore. For anyone who has not been out this way it is a breathtaking view with some amazing shore lines. Weather permitting a cruise out there would be very doable for a day trip with plenty to see and explore around the islands. If anyone would be interested, Manitou is a great area to do some hiking and camping. I stayed there in 2002 with some friends and camped there for a few nights. It was a good time and was very affordable.

Grand Traverse Bay is also relatively close by with several smaller port towns along the Leelanau peninsula heading into Traverse City. I would like to stay in port around the Traverse City area for a few days if it works out as well. There are plenty of marinas there to refuel and get dock space for sleeping aboard or a hotel stay in town.

Here is a Beaver Island map detailing the harbors, island and water depths around the island.

Beaver Island is total opposite of Mackinac Island.

I have not been there in years but I once considered it one of my favorite places before it was really discovered.

A trip there is not complete with out getting a rent a wreck and driving around the island. Exploring Garden and High Islands should also be done. Got to have a beer at the Shamrock.

The weather can be rough getting there.

If you have not be to Grand Traverse Bay you will enjoy the boating even if the big Lake is to rough.

The last time we did the Owners event at Irish Boat Shop in Charlevoix several of us made the trip out to Beaver Island, I've spent a lot of time out there. One of my best friends and partenr from the Detroit Police Dept was born & raised there. His mother & father were born there and he never left the island until he was 16 years old to attend high school in Charlevoix. His father had retired from the Coast Guard Beaver Island Station before they closed it down. My friend and his three brothers all ended up joining the Coast Guard. I spent many summer vacations there as well as November deer hunting trips.

My buddy and his brothers still have three houses on the Island, the main house right next to the Old Coast Guard Station at St. James Bay.

When we were there last the water levels were down and it was quite a reach from the Montauk to the deck level of the dock.

I ageee it could be a good time cruising Beaver Island and the surrounding are
