Hal,

That's a great idea, would consider hosting you two, however our oldest son will be graduating from HS that morning at 10:00. If the date changes maybe we could help you out.

Would love to cruise the Mighty Mississippi in the future.

I am really looking foward to the run this year...What's the chances it can rain like hell 2 yrs. in a row?...Had a great time last year....Was a bit rough going back to the hook afterwards.
Yiddil posted 01-29-2010 08:00 PM ET (US)     Profile for Yiddil  Send Email to Yiddil
Yep! this is a keeper:)

Last year, even in the rain we had like 47 boats (James can tell us more acurately) and people came from everywhere. Can it rain two years ina row...sure it can, happens all the time with the Potomac Swim (this year its June 5th) seems to be three years of good weather and one of bad for the "swim".

But we are hopefull we will ahve good weather at each...

Regardless, the weather was not so bad you could not go around Manhattan...heck a few 13 did the trip!So a bit of rain should not stop anyone from coming and enjoying the boating in NY Harbour and vicinity. The skyline is magnificent, the bridges breathtaking, and the Statue and other sites patriotic!

Do your planning now, get your lists together to have your rigs in order and make the effort. I did not see one person who did not smile in front of the Statue when the fire boat let loose for us:))

"All Boston Whaler Owners are planning on meeting at the Statue of Liberty around 10:00am, will then proceed North up the Hudson River, to Spuyten Duyvil Bridge, proceeding South down the Harlem and East Rivers, We are anticipating on completing the circumventing of Manhattan Island around 1:30pm to 2:30pm weather and tides permitting . We have secured Liberty Landing Marina for alittle get together after the run. http://www.libertylandingmarina.com/ Party details pending, they have agreed to provide dockage to us from 2PM till 4:30PM , the on land activities are currently being worked out.
N.Y.F.D. is onboard with the Fireboat , U.S.C.G. permits are filed , a request for Coast Guard air support is also pending (the Public Relations Officer is a Whaler Owner).
We'll update info as we recieve it.
We currently have 37 confirmed vessels and are hopeful the lead boat to be KillerWhaler62 from this community.

We stayed in Teaneck, NJ last year. There is a very decent ramp at the base of the GW Bridge, NJ side. My buddies want to make this our annual fellows-get-of-town-no-questions-asked trip. We had a blast in downpours and 2 to 3 foot Hudson River chop last year. I can imagine how fun it will be with warm weather and sunny skies. Count us in, regardless of weather.

MD, we missed heading up the road with you last year as we made other arrangements for the trip...it was a ball.

I just repowered "Das BOat" and am stillleaning towards going to this event if all the pieces of the puzzle work.

I have contacted James about accomadations, ramps, launches and other important information we should discuss.
He has assured me he will get all that and post it soon.

I would love to launch at the GW, Ive seen pics of it and its a nice ramp...but you cant leave anything there over nite to the best of my recall.

Were did you stay, and what accomadations did you have for your rig...security and safet is paramount.

It looks like the ramp at the George Washington Bridge is about 14 miles from Liberty Island. Can't we launch from the Liberty Landing Marina?

No boat launch at Liberty Landing Marina. I am working with the yard office to arrange secure, gated and patrolled storage of boats and trailers for the overnight. The closest Launch ramp is just down the road. I'm unsure of Lodging in the area as I'm from Connecticut but I think the Marina can provide suggestions.
We currently are aware of 46 vessels planning to attend.

"Boating:
Liberty Landing Marina

Liberty Landing offers 200 berths and dockside facilities. Future plans include additional berths and dockside facilities, restaurants, marine-related shops and a 250-boat storage building. For more information call (201) 985-8000.

Boat Launch and Permits

Liberty State Park?s boat launch provides access to the Hudson River and opens at 6 a.m. throughout the year.

Fees: Permits are mandatory year round. For fees please inquire at the park office. Maximum trailer length is 23 ft.

Place of Purchase: Seasonal launch permits must be bought at the park office, and are accepted at both Liberty State Park and Leonardo State Marina. Daily launch permits may be bought at the office or at the ticket machine in the boat launch"

I will be attending with my in progress '71 Nauset. Liberty State Park Ramp is the closest. There is also a Red Roof Inn with a boat ramp in the Meadowlands. It is a bit of a ride but it may bea good option for those coming from out of the area. Red Roof Inn

I get it's about 20 miles, by water, from the Red Roof Inn's ramp to Liberty Island using Google Earth's Path tool. If it's all an unrestricted speed zone that's about an hour, with no parking or security issues.

that 14 mile run to the GW bridge definitely didnt feel like it, even in the chop we had last year. Im staying in the sameplace in Engelwood. Covered garage, nice location.

Besides I took the boat to NYC to see NYC and we did. We went the 14 miles from GW bridge to the East River at the base of Manhattan and then rolled up the East to well past Roosevelt Island, another 7 to ten miles and then returned to GW Bridge. It was an endurance test in my Montauk with no canvas.

Len - Dan: I'm trailering this season so I'll be launching from the Liberty Park ramp. This shaves about 40 miles off the trip from Keyport and back.

It is an easy trip up the Turnpike and the ramp is very accessible even for "Bella".

Hope to see you on the 26th!

I went to Liberty State Park today to do some recon. I spoke to the NJ Park Police Officer.

Gates open at 6 am. On a nice day e said there are people lined up at 5:30 (!). He said to try to get there by 8 am as it gets a little hectic during the season.

There is a machine that accepts credit cards where you can purchase a daily pass. Cost is $15. If you have a NJ State Boat Launch permit it is valid here. Lot is of a fair size (approx 50 spots) but he told me that in the past they are very liberal with parking and let you par on the dgrass or the side of the road. At 10 PM they lock the gate and ticket your vehicle. Welcome to NJ!

As a backup there is a facility on the Newark Bay side of Bayonne. Probably another 5 miles down and around the point. Cost is $25/day. http://www.bayonnenj.org/boat.shtml

We launched at Liberty State Park last year...made the whole rainy run to Rob and Laura Petry's backyard (that's New Rochelle for you young kids) and back to the Statue. It was a great time....even with the weather. And that 89ish mile day was all in a 160 Dauntless. Fun Fun Fun.

LSP is a very nice place to launch. Really close to the stature. Lot is big...but you can also park truck/trailer along the burm of the road leading to the parking lot if the lot is full - at least that's what the NJSP told us last year.

One word of advice...not that any of you all need this - but I'll pass it along anyway:
Make sure your vessel is equipped with all the nessesary safety equipment as perscribed by law for your size boat - and have your documentation with you for the boat - AND have your boat licence / USCG boating course card, or whatever your location calls for.

Last year, we were the first in at the ramp, and the NJSP was performing spot checks at the ramp. Once we were in the water, we had two very nice officers ask us to stick around for a minute while they checked out our paperwork, life vests, flairs, safety course card, etc.... No hassel - just a friendly check. Just an unexpected start to a wonderful day.

Newark Liberty Int. would be the choice for air port...Only 5 mile south of Liberty State Pk. in Jersey City....Many local motels near air port...mass transit in the area stinks...Rent a car is the best bet. What a shame that Liberty Landing Marine is charging 2 bucks pr. foot for us to dock and spend money at their high priced facility......That's tipical N.Y., N.J....I would think 10 bucks per boat would be more then fair....Most marina's will let you dock overnight for 2 bucks ft.Figure 50 boats avg. 20ft = 2,000 bucks for a couple hrs. plus what you spend at marina....Shame on them!

We get to the statue about an hour early so we're idling and bumping the motor in and out of gear from time to time to hold position.

For those trailering in on Friday, I checked on storage with the Liberty Landing Marina. They have secure storage in a locked yard but that will not work for us as it is locked at 4:00 PM and not opened until 10:00 AM. They have an open lot with roving security that could be used anytime. There is "typically no cost" for either area for an overnight. Their service phone number is 201.333.6755.

If you didn't notice in earlier posts, they do not have a ramp. They are located about 1 mile from the public ramp at Liberty State Park.

I have the same questions as Dave regarding the flare gun. If I am coming from a NJ ramp, and I am stopped, I will need the flares or flare gun.

Also, the weather forecast is looking good for Saturday. Let's hope it stays that way.

I was looking at my GPS last night and it seems there is a marked channel to the South of the Island. Are there any noteworthy hazards ?

The weather is looking VERY good.

I picked up a couple of boxes of t-shirts for the event today. “Manhattan Run 2010” They look great!

James and Robert informed me that they will give out at Liberty Landing Marina following the cruise.

Hi all,

I have done some research and found conflicting information. Please answer the following question if you can.

1. I have a Whaler (Montauk) registered in and am a resident of New York State. I was born in 1967. Will I need a NJ boater's safety certificate to launch at Liberty Park and operate in NJ tidal waters?

If so, I'll probably just launch in Yonkers, but if there is a strong north wind, I'll be forcing my mates to withstand quite a beating on the way back to the launch. Any 22 or longer Whalers care to knock down the chop for us on our run back to Yonkers?

I guarantee my mates are not as tough as my Montauk.

Steve,

If you have a NY or other safety certificate you will be ok. Here is is from the NJ Marine Police site (http://www.state.nj.us/njsp/maritime/faq.html):

Marine Bureau FAQ's - Frequently Asked Questions
Q1

Do I need a boat safety certificate?

A1

Yes, if you are operating a personal watercraft (Jet Ski, Wave Runner, etc.), or a power vessel on the waters of the State of New Jersey you are required to possess a New Jersey boat safety certificate.

Exemptions:
A boat safety certificate is not required for non-powered vessels.

Q2

I live in another state, do I need a boat safety certificate?

A2

Yes - Out-of-state residents are not exempt from the education requirement listed above; however, the law states that an out-of-State resident who is at least 16 years of age and who will be in this State for less than 90 days may operate a power vessel on the waters of the State of New Jersey if they possess a boat safety certificate issued by their state of residence, or if they possess written proof of successful completion of a boat safety course approved by another state, the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators(N.A.S.B.L.A.) or the United States Coast Guard.

Boating safety certificate, what is this ? I have been boating for 45 years in all types of power and sail racing. Never an incident. I'm sure I must have taken a course in my teens. Will I be prevented from launching at Liberty State Park ? After all the planning this may kill my trip at the last minute. No way I can get a safety certificate today. What are the risks?

Hi,

Thanks for the NJ Marine Police Regs Jon. I had seen them but found another site (Marina?) referring to tidal waters being exempt from a certification if the vessel operator was born before 1972.

If the weather holds true, we should have a nice ride to and from Yonkers but I'll need to bring some extra gas. Thanks for the report Len.

I'm very excited to see you folks out there.

I called the NJ State Police Marine Services Bureau at Newark Bay, NJ for clarification of the boater safety certificate requirement. He transferred me to Trooper Testalano who advised me that since NYS does not require me to have an operators safety certificate I would be treated as a visitor and would not have to have one to launch at Liberty Landing and make the Manhattan tour. I assume that this answer would also apply to operators from states other than New York.

Weekend plans look like I will be able to attend. Tried last year and had a steering failure in front of South Street Seaport. What time do people coming from CT think they will be heading by Stamford? Also, whats it look like the tides will be doing traveling throught Hells Gate between 9:00 am and 10:00 am.

I will be test running my newly restored (about 90% complete - still waiting a few parts but nothing to keep us from going) 72 Whaler 19 tomorrow - providing all is successful we will definitely be there on Saturday. We probably will not be able to attend the Liberty Landing Marina event but we shall see.

Is anyone heading up from the Jersey shore area? We will be traveling up from Ocean City NJ.

Here is a quick update picture - Sorry for the cell phone quality -

Len,

For us "inlanders", what the heck does that mean ?? I thought Hells Gate was named for the entrance to NYC, LOL.

So what are we in for ?

Dave,.... Hell Gate is a section of N.y. where the three major bodies of water meet....It is located at the point where the Harlem river, East river and the entrance to Pellem bay....When the tides are runnig hard, Its like going thru Hell's Gate....Very narrow chanel and 3 powerfull bodies of water nunning in different directions...If you hit it at the right time, its pretty wicked but fun...

What a great day on the water. Hot and hazy. It is too bad more people couldn't join us.

I counted 21 boats.

Unfortunately, we had afternoon commitments, and so we were unable to stop by Liberty Landing Marina. It would have been nice to speak with a few more of you.

Running out to a graduation party now, but wanted to post a link to the pictures we took.

Dan,

Great pics - I will get mine loaded up Monday - My camera battery died and charger is at home in Medford.

A big thank you for following us all the way in. It was comforting knowing someone was there in case we needed it! I really like the picture where I am looking at the motor scratching my head - gonna make that a screensaver...lol.

Turned out to be a hole in my oil filter. I took all the casings off when we got back to the shore house and saw it right away. Guessing the filter wrench pinched it and when the motor heated up it cracked.

Thanks again!

Scott,

No worries. I am glad to hear it was nothing serious.

I laughed when I saw that picture. I don't think my wife realized what you were doing when she snapped the pictures.

It was good to meet you. I look forward to seeing the 25 Cuddy on the water someday.

Jon,

Nice pictures. It looked like your kids were having a great time out there.

If anybody would like a copy of any of my photographs at original resolution, please let me know and I will email them to you.

My thanks to Jim and anybody else involved in coordinating this day. I know how much time and effort goes into making something like this happen, and I appreciate all your efforts.

My family had a great day. The boat handled like a dream, and the ride was great, even when I miscalculated the wake of the Staten Island Ferry, as we were approaching the East River, and we went completely airborne! I think every screw on the boat rattled on that landing!

What a great experience!

Thank you James and Robert for choosing our 62 Eastport to lead the flotilla around Manhattan Island. It couldn’t have been a more perfect day for the run.

We had Doug Nettles, Boston Whaler Regional Manager as a passenger for the trip. Doug remembered his youth in the Abaco’s riding in 16’7” Whalers.

We can’t wait till next year.

I’ll post photos later today.

I am posting my pics here as well so if the Manhattan Run string gets resurrected next year they will show up.

Here are the pics and videos I took of the Manhattan circumnavigation on Saturday June 26. We had 23 boats participating. I was solo in my Dauntless 14.

My new camera has built in GPS which I thought I would never use. Picasa shows the trip progress on the map insert as you view the pics, pretty cool. The map feature doesn't show in "slide show" mode. After opening the link just click on the first pic and it will expand. Advance pics by using the arrow above the pic. On the third slide the camera GPS got sync'd up with the satellites and you will see the map adjacent and to the right of the pic. You can zoom the map with the "+" and "-" key. Enjoy.....

I know this might seem very early, but do we have date set for the 2011 NYC Rendezvous?

Trying to time it with my 69, soon-to-be 70 year old father's bucket list trip of the Erie canal in our 16 foot Whalers.

Thanks,
