Here We go again!

I have all 12 standard rooms booked for Saturday night(11 left as I am reserved) and 3 efficiencies. For Friday I have only 3 std and 1 eff taken down so anyone coming in Friday better act quick because they are not secured for more than what I just mentioned. Rates are the same as the last few years..$85 for STD and $125 for Efficiency. The std rooms sleep 4 usually and the Eff have a kitchen, etc and sleep 6 I believe. Tiki bar, boat ramp & parking, trailer parking, band, firepit and baitshop are all included.

We normally meet at 9-10am at the ramp and head east towards the cowpens(Manatee hangout & 72 degree crystal clear springs) around 11am. There we eat, drink, swim, and be merry. I will try again this year to have a poker run but we'll discuss that at the ramp. Bring food and cheer and plenty of beer. Usually around 4-5ish we start heading back to the hotel which is about 1/2+ hour trip. We can and usually do stop at a bar or 2 on the way back or you can continue to the Tiki at the hotel. If we do the poker run we WILL be stopping at the bars this year as it will be necessary to do the run. Once home and tied up we will hang out at the Tiki while those who need to shower and/or nap can do so. Around 7ish we usually head to the fire-pit and start dinner and a fire. We will have tables for you to setup your dish, etc. We will also have grills for cooking. Usually everyone brings a dish to share so pipe in what you are bringing so we know what not to bring, etc. Food is never a shortage and there is a store down the road for those long haulers to buy stuff that may spoil, etc. There is also a seafood market within walking distance if anyone wants to buy themselves something special to eat(you don't have to share or you can). We do need plates, forks, firewood, ammunition/explosives, etc so one can bring that instead of food. After dinner we have party favors and gifts to pass out to the members. Then we sometimes go to the Tiki and listen to the band. I say sometimes because it is usually too cold in March at night and they cancel, this year SHOULD be good to go. Afterwards we mosey back to the fire and slur and bable til the wee hours or until the manangement tells us to go to bed.

Sunday we have breakfast at 9ish at one of the local establishments and usually go for a ride down the river to the gulf and back. This is about 2 hours or less and very peacefull and natural. There is nothing to do out west and hence why we don't do that on Saturday. Basically MacRae's is the last place west on the river besides houses. Then we pack up around noon and leave. There are on occassion some who stay Sunday night so you can do that as well. Some have also come down on Thursday. Most however are Saturday.

This rendezvous is our largest and keeps getting larger every year. We have been doing this since about 2001 but I believe this is our 5th(maybe 6th??) "official" homosassa rendezvous. This is a family oriented gig just like all the others but it does get roudy and goes long into the night. Since we take down the WHOLE hotel we can pretty much do what we want because who will complain. I HIGHLY suggest those with youngins have something or someplace for them to go/do after dinner(movie, video, sleep, etc) as it does tend to get very adult. I am just warning those who have not attended. For those who have, you already know my warning is worse than the bite.

Lastly and this is not for the masses but just another "hint":
Those who want to fish and sightsee by yourselves, I suggest you do so in the early morning or on Friday/Sunday.
I would appreciate that all those attending be at ramp by 10:30 if already in the water so we can meet and greet. If not possible to be at the ramp, try and be at the pens by noon or call if you are having problems, running late etc. People drive from all over to meet everyone and showing up at 5pm because you were fishing does annoy some of the attendees who were hoping to hang out with you....you know who you are!!! You can always reach me at 941-545-3808 so write it down.

Again this is always a hoot. Those who attend usually keep attending until death. Those who procrastinate wind up spending double or more for a room down the street so DON'T PROCRASTINATE! In other words, "You snooze...you lose!" We always take down all of the rooms but in case you are procrastinating, you have 48 hours to cancel your reservation. I suggest you reserve and possibly cancel at the last minute. We also have people who need rooms so if you are going to cancel, let us know so another member can take your room. If you can't get a STD room, the efficiency is usually cheaper than the competition down the street. When you reserve your room tell them you are with the "Whaler Group" or they will probably tell you they are booked. You then just give them your name and credit card info....viola!

If you have any questions or need more info, etc...e-mail me. If you are attending and have booked a room, please post it so we get a count. If you are bringing a dish, let us know as well. If you want to join GCBWOA for free, let me know as well. See you in 7+ weeks which WILL fly by.

Ellen and I will be in the vicinity on the 9th (Longboat Key 3rd to 10th) - fly back to Hillbilly Siberia on the 10th.

Would we be rejected if we show up?

****IMPORTANT****

Pete---Nobody has ever been rejected except Pat & Stefan I believe. Not by us of course, it was the woman they brought as a date that rejected them.

I forgot and so did Len I believe.... MacRae's (352)628-2922. You want to reach the office to reserve your room under "Whaler Group".

Looks like Len & I are seriously thinking about Friday night as well, anyone else interested? I think Janis usually goes up Friday as well.

I may show up Friday, if work will let me. Already booked a room so there are 10 left. Spinach dip, Nick?? What's Judy gonna bring? Just wanna know in case I wind up hauling them aboard again this year. Can she make a Bloody Mary?

Suggestion: A trip down the river to the Freezer restaurant would be a great stop for some great Seafood at good prices.
We stop there often. (hard to find)

BTW, anyone in need of ANY rod and/or reel repair, found a master, northbound side of highway, in Homosassa. Looking forward to it. zotcha.

Len, didn't realize it was another 100 miles south. Thats a lot of trailering to turn around and come back Friday. Really wanted to have a cold one at that Cortez Bridge Beer and Bait store. Guess it will have to be another time. Now I'm glad I booked both nights!

I will need a head count eventually because I want to bring local headed frozen shrimp. Not the best at cooking them if someone wants to take charge. We'll thaw, boil and peel as you go if nobody wants to get creative. If anyone local has an outdoor propane cooker and large pot, it would save me some packing and space. If not, I've got it.

Also, if my back settles down, I'm hoping to go clamming for some of the sweetest little neck clams south of New England. They will require a (gas preferred) grill for roasting. I'm freakin pumped. Guess I'll see you guys Friday night, and still flying solo so far.

Sounds like 19 gallons will last all weekend, or should I grab a couple of 5 gallon jugs so we don't have to drive any more than necessary?

Nick, are you coordinating some kind of contact/cell phone list for this event? I'm lookin at 305 miles, and hoping to stay at a bud's house in Hernando Beach. I'll be packed with tools, jack, spare and grease, but I REALLY don't want to break it out! Save that crap for the vintage race boat events! Thanks. zotcha.

Took a standard room for Friday and Saturday nights.

We're in. My boat has never seen the sunny state of Florida so I am kind of excited.

It's a perfect week for us because we have school vacation April 5-9.

It will be be my wife, twelve year old daughter, and I; so we may turn in early Saturday evening.

We will drive down Thursday and have an efficiency booked Thursday, Friday, and Saturday night.

WE ARE FULLY BOOKED in just 3 small days!!! Good going people. If anyone wants to join the festivities, you will have to find another hotel. There is one across the street and I think another 2 nearby. Don't let this discourage you from attending and next year don't procrastinate if ya want front row seats at MacRae's.

Brad and Lisa coming from Lauderdale for Friday(late) and Saturday nights, joined by son Carey and girlfriend Hannah from St Augustine/Jacksonville both nights as well.

Zot,

I have not attended one of Nick's gigs yet, but have heard good reviews here on CW. I went to the past 3 Whaler Owner's events in Bimini and had a blast. Rafting off with 30+ boats, meeting other owners, making new friends, eating, drinking and having fun. McCrae's looks like a real fun place for a weekend rendezvous. We're looking forward to it, should be a great time.

Dont worry about the kids. I'll bring my underwater light that lights up about an 8 foot circle underwater and the girls can fish off the dock at night and watch all of the fish that the light attracts. It's really cool.

I may also bring 2 kayaks and 1 paddle board, it all depends on how ambitious I get when packing.

Can I assume firewood would be a plus? Shrimp is guaranteed, clams almost a definate. Mentally packing already.

We're psyched that you guys can make it. Trailering all the way up from Key West for the weekend is huge. You guys are troopers.

Now, if that "other guy" from the east coast that I also to recruit can step up to the plate and come with his family, it would be nice. He also has a master's degree in "raft-off-ology".

As we get closer I will confirm what we can bring. The 6 ft grill helps all, also have a turkey frier wih a big pot that could cook shrimp or whatever. Also some butane burners that we can put a few sautee pans on. Can bring a few 6 foot tables for grub etc, maybe some plateware etc.
We need wood for fire. Its been so cold down here all the wood is expensive like 15 bucks for a lil wheel barrel full like 25 sticks... may be scarce?

I'm definately bringing the shrimp, but by the size of this thing it ain't gonna be a pound a person. Tides perfect tomorrow to go and run a check on my spot for the clams. Bringing firewood too.

Going away next weekend with GF and child, as a test run. That will hopefully determine whether or not I'm flying solo. (Was diggin' all the weapons talk!)

Boat and trailer ready. Yamaha serviced. Replacing both cables, water pump and lower unit gear oil myself, and I'm ready!

Nick, Len, & Gang,
Wish I could be there but we will definitly not make it this year. That is the weekend we are driving down to Savanah to see my daughter in a play. Then we are heading to St. Augustine for a conference my wife is attending. Not going to take the boat but may fish with a guide. Not sure yet. Anyway, I am sure you will have a great time. This gathering is getting bigger every year. Take care.

Good job with Facebook, Nick. I don't use it but I had Luna, who has her own page check the site out for me. Like I said, a pickup full of wood is plenty for two nights. I will bring the burner and pot for the crustaceans. As far as the grill is concerned, is Pat definite or not. All should bring a chair if you want to hang out by the fire. I will bring a table for prep or eating on. Acouple others would be good to have also. I will bring my boat grill and brats for the lunch. And as usual, the keg can reside on my rig with Nick's dad at the tap... That oughta be fun. Maybe we should put Judy in charge of the tap!!!!

I still have the deck from last year in my Jeep so i don't forget it AGAIN!! I am also gonna bring the poker run stuff. I thought about doing that friday but we might not have enough people that early. Can't start a run at 8pm.

I think Stefan said Pat was in and got the last STD room. He usually brings enough tables. Don Wilson said he was coming as well. He's bringing hurricane shutters I think. Actually He is gonna bring wood with Brad I believe. I heard that MacRae's might have some secret stash rooms available if anyone is still looking, give them a buzz first.

Frank...are you coming down Friday? I am bringing my tank and gonna go diving early Saturday before the beer starts flowing..AGAIN!

If anyone needs a regular room call McRaes on Friday around noon and ours will be available. Our reservations are from Thursday till Sunday but I imagine McRaes would adjust that. I have the Whaler flag from last year. I will keep it for our Georgia rendevous if I don't hear from someone regarding its disposition. Could be used for lunch or dinner depending on everyone's thoughts. Quanity to be determined at the end of the roll call. We could bring Sterno to warm trays unless there are other ideas. This will be our first meet.

Friday: A 20 percent chance of showers. Partly cloudy, with a high near 75. North northwest wind between 8 and 10 mph.

Friday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 52.

Saturday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 77.

Saturday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 52.

Sunday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 78.

Plenty of time to get ready. Glad I don't have any wet sanding or varnishing to do Thursday nite!!!! A note to all, have your paperwork (registration,Len) and safety equipment on board. There's lots of water cops and do gooders in the area.

And I was hoping Len would atone for that by having us drink his beer in the a/c cabin of his cruiser. ...

Varnish is almost done. Buffing is now complete. Steering hole is drilled and installed. Controls are installed. All I have to do now is 3m finesse the hull and wax. Install new control cables, tach, cup holder(important), key switch and hour meter, install the entire interior, railing, norman pin, and bimini top....and I have 36 hours to do it. No problem!

Hope you have a great weekend. Wish we could join the fun. Northwest Michigan weather forecast for tonight, Thursday and Thursday night is for 3 to 6 inches of snow. We didn't have any snow accumulation in March.

No brightwork on my Montauk.

She is ,however, sitting pretty in the driveway. I fired up my motor and she ran great. Plus all the bugs are dead in my neighborhood (two-smoke).

I map-quested the directions: 391 miles- 6 hours and 29 minutes

Vacation has begun and I am a little fired up.

We will head out around 10:00AM Thursday. Look forward to seeing everyone.

If I can keep a lid on it, leaving 6 a.m., arriving 12:30. Firewood for one professional bon fire, one and a half "normal" camp fires. 20+ lbs. shrimp. 100+ fresh little necks. So much beer I forgot the bottled water. I'll live. Gotta pack clothes and toiletries. Otherwise, I'M THERE. Safe travels. zot.

Just a quick note to all the 1st timers: there is a strong possibility that at some point during this gig you will attempt to carry on a conversation with me as you would with others and I will act pretty much oblivious to the fact, especially if you are on my right side. Know that I am not ignoring you but that I am pretty much deaf as doornail. Just wack me on the side if the head so I know you're there.
I only bring this up in advance because I would hate for any of you to have the experience that our Sargent at Arms had a few years back. And yes Frank , I got the stogies lol

We are back home in Atlanta. It was really a great time. Thanks to everyone who made this event happen.

MapQuest is wrong. It took us 8 hours to get to Homosassa on Thursday and 9 hours to get home today. There was a lot of traffic on I-75 North today and it came to a complete stop more than once. I am not sure why.

We had a nice dinner at Captain Mike's in Crystal Springs Thursday evening. Friday morning we had an excursion upstream. It is all no wake zones this way due to Manatees. In the afternoon we ventured downstream.

The raft up Saturday afternoon was a blast, the bonfire and food in the evening even better. We met lots of nice folks. We headed out this morning at 9:00 AM so sorry we unable to say bye to several people. A good time was had by all.

Made it back in 2 & half, much better than Friday's slop which took an extra hour. Great seeing all you oldtimers and new faces. And finally a few other 18s to gain insight from.
Till the next gig.....God bless America

Hey, it was a blast and entirely regrettable we had to leave Friday night at 11:30. I was entirely correct there was ZERO traffic all the way back to Long Boat, we made the plane at TPA no problem Saturday noon and actually flew just off shore from Homosassa along the coast on first leg to ATL. I saw you guys!!! Actually it was tough to pick out but I confirmed on Florida County Map book I had in the car in Chicago and double checked on Google Maps this morning.

It was great meeting or seeing you guys again and we are planning to do it right next year. Moreover, I am on these guys up here already to throw down some Whaler fun this summer. Martha B and I did some emailing and I sent one to Rohfling this morning but he must have slept in.

Thanks to you all, unforgetable and other people's left overs aren't that bad including fish bowl glasses of margaritas and especially when you consider gas is already over $3 bucks/gallon in Chicago and $2.97 here this afternoon.

Press On Regardless

And if these Michigan people don't throw down some fun times this summer I'm gonna get real touchy. We need to get back to our heritage!!!!

Way too tired yesterday to update the thread. Had a great time, might have been the best yet and the weather sure was a 10. Even the local cats were getting down Saturday night. People were nice, food was fantastic, and the beer was cold & flowing....what more can one ask for?

Nick - Thanks so much for organizing an awesome weekend. You pushed for the later dates and we were all rewarded with weather that couldn't be beat.

We met some really nice people and everyone's boats showed the love that we all bestow on those unsinkable legends.
Kudos to those who traveled from as far as Atlanta and Key West. Look forward to whalering with you all again some day. Brad

Len,

Great job with the photos.

Nick,

Great job orchestrating the entire event.

Everyone else,

It was very nice meeting all of you that I had the opportunity to spend some time with. I'm sure all that all who attended now have some very funny stories to tell their friends back home.
--The Margarita Grille experience (you couldn’t make up anything more bizarre)
-- The interesting group that rafted off in front of us, with all the Mohawks and tattoos, chugging Jack Daniels from 1.75 liter bottles, diving off their boat into 3 feet of water. Then they rafted off to a camo airboat with a similar crew on board (all they were missing was their rebel flag). Very Funny stuff.
--The food was awesome at the evening cookout, thanks to all. Special thanks Brad for bringing the enormous stone crabs for all to enjoy while rafted off at the springs and the jumbo shrimp for the cookout.

Take it easy,

Brian

The grill on Friday went through some changes since the last time I went there a few years ago. I did not know we had to wave flags and sing patriotic songs all through our meal. It was however very interesting to say the least and the drinks were still good. The best part was the next morning we went to our breakfast knook and it is now called the Patriotic Place. All through my meal I stared at a picture of a sniper with his rifle pointed at me, kinda made me nervous. For those who are more civilized, that area can be pretty backwoods but that gives it most of its charm.

Maybe we need an official song - Do It Again, Brian Wilson

E
It’s automatic when I talk with old friends

And conversation turns to girls we knew
A B
When their hair was soft and long
E
And the beach was the place to go

The sun-tanned bodies and the rays of sunshine
California girls and a beautiful coastline
Warmed up weather, let’s get together
And do it again

(Interlude – follow same chord progression)

(Middle)
A G#m C#m
With a girl the lonely sea looks good and warm at night
F#m Am B7
Makes your nighttimes warm and out of sight

(Guitar solo over verse pattern)

E
Well I’ve been thinking ‘bout

All the places we’ve surfed and danced and
A B
All the faces we’ve missed so let’s get back together
E
And do it again
