August is over and time (actually past time) to start planning the annual Mullett Fall Color Tour.

The plans are to stick to our traditional date of the first weekend in October. So that will be Friday October 1st through Sunday October 3rd.

Elsa and I are looking forward to hosting again this year for another fine weekend of boating and fellowship.

So who is in for this year?

Well this is shaping up to be quite a group. By my count it looks like 11 boats and 23 people. That will be a photo opportunity with that many Whalers at the dock.

Our thoughts are along the lines of previous years.

-Dinner Friday night at a local restaurant (The Brown Trout, The Rusty Anchor (formally known as The Boat House), Hackmatack or other local establishment.

-Saturday morning departure from my dock headed toward Crooked Lake. How far we get can depend on weather and what time we actually set sail.

-Saturday lunch somewhere along the way (Indian River or Alanson).

-Return for dinner at my cottage and a fun evening of Whaler talk, pictures and good times.

-Sunday more boating "as the spirits move us".

Suggestions or refinements are welcome.

One question I have is who is in charge of the weather this year?

Does anyone have a projector they can bring? I know people will have a lot of pictures to show and that is the best way to do it with this size group.

I will bring a projector.

Put us down for a breakfast casserole and bagels.

Any of the restaurant suggestions works for us. We had a great dinner at the Brown Trout last weekend.

Martha -

I can get a projector as a backup.

One nice option with Hackmatack is for those who come up early enough it's a nice trip across the lake and a very short ways up the river to it.

Why married couples (wives) need to synch calendars with each other (the Captain, King, Maintenance Man)

I was just informed that "we" have promised to host a retirement party at our house that Saturday. What if we came up that Sunday? Does that make sense to haul up from Grand Haven area for the day?

djahncke posted 09-19-2010 08:26 PM ET (US)     Profile for djahncke  Send Email to djahncke
We have things taken care of for Saturday dinner but would welcome contributions for breakfast before our day of boating and then appetizers when we get back Saturday afternoon.

For Saturday morning, Martha is bringing a breakfast casserole, bagels and donut holes. It would be nice to also have bananas and orange juice, and maybe even some special bread from the Harvest Bread Company or Panera or similar place.

Dave and Kathy are bringing some smoked whitefish for appetizers when we are done with boating on Saturday and we need some things to round it out. Perhaps we can have some volunteers for cheese and crackers and maybe bruscetta.

Looking forward to seeing everyone!

Don / Elsa, et al -

When Hoosier started talking about the weather predictions, I got to wondering how far in advance was he looking.

Turns out that I relied on some bad data that was in my calendar. Didn't really look, but thought the MLFR&CT for this year is during the second weekend of October... the 8th and 9th.

I screwed up. We've got a Chicago trip for my employer's 40th birthday to attend. Damn. And even if that was not on the plate, we have to be in Brighton by 1:30PM Sunday for our first grandchild baptism.

We're out, unless the weather gets so bad to postpone for a week.

Don and Gail.

Next year...

It looks like The Rusty Anchor (formerly The Boat House) has closed. Hopefully it is just for the season.

So, that leaves us with the choice of The Brown Trout in Indian River or Hackmatack on the Cheboygan River. My choice would be The Brown Trout as it is more reasonably priced and easier to get to (unless you are traveling by boat). However if people would prefer Hackmatack I could be easily persuaded to go to Hackmatack.

OK, I am calling it for the Brown Trout. Shall we say 6:30?

The latest from the National Weather Service.

Friday Night...Partly cloudy. Lows in the lower 40s. North winds 5 to 10 mph.

Saturday...Partly cloudy. Highs in the upper 40s. North winds 5 to 15 mph.

Saturday Night...Partly cloudy with a 30 percent chance of rain showers. Lows in the mid 30s.

Sunday...Partly cloudy. Highs around 50.

It looks like there might be rain while we are enjoying dinner and our evening entertainment. But other than that we just need to be prepared for invigorating temperatures!

We are back from about a 60-mile run of lake and river boating. The sun was shining all during the voyage. The wind was quite strong this morning, 15 to 20-knots from the North-Northeast. As we left the dock at 10 a.m. the air temperature was about 46-degrees. When we returned about 5:30 p.m. the air had warmed to about 50-degrees. The strong sun saved the day.

Recalling our purpose in making this trip, which was to visit the northern half of the northern hemisphere in order to observe changes in pigmentation in the foliage of the boreal forest from a riverine and littoral setting, our mission was a success. In other words, we saw fall color.

We had seven boats with 17 occupants. A very strong turn out for what was not exactly an Indian Summer day.

Don and Elsa -

Thanks again for your hospitality and generosity. It was a great weekend!

Thanks to everyone for the kind words, encouragement and birthday wishes.

Here's my damage count for the 2010 boating season:
Two steering failures on my own boat (easily remedied) and yesterday, while aboard Matt's boat, we lost steering in front of the dam/lock facility on the Cheboygan River.

Anybody want me to beta test your new rig?? :)

All's well that ends well - and we had a great time. It was just what the doctor ordered.

Thanks again,

Dave

Great time, glad we were finally able to make it for the Color Tour.

A huge thank you to Don and Elsa for their hospitality. Mary and I had a great time at dinner and really enjoyed all the photos afterward. Meeting everyone was great, the quality of all the boats took second place to all the people we met.

I'm sure I took the fewest photos of anyone in the fleet, but a few turned out worth sharing.

A couple shots of the fleet assembling in front of Don and Elsa's Saturday morning. These really capture the low point of the weather Saturday.

If we'd gotten on the water by 12 or 1 we could have run up to the Bridge before heading home. We drove 23 to the Bridge and Lake Huron was glassey. There is something about those Montauks that is just awesome. When I was driving Len's last April it's like a perfect fit, a stretched 13 that seems perfect. Put an ETEC on back and it snaps your head back when you jam the throttle WOT. Can't imagine w/ 115

Thanks everyone for posting those great pictures and videos.

Elsa and I thoroughly enjoyed hosting this event and were delighted that we had such a good turnout this year. And thank you everyone for pitching in with the help in the kitchen and with all the wonderful appetizers, breakfast casseroles and bottles of wine.

When we were packing up to leave the cottage earlier this week we found a pair of black gloves that some one left behind in the living room. Whoever left them let me know and we will workout getting them back to you before the real cold weather arrives.

Those pics turned out really well. Thanks for sharing those. I really like the one Steve got of me and Carmen. Good work!

I have two videos loaded onto youtube now.

Search for "Crooked River Color Tour 1" and "Crooked River Color Tour Part 2".

Hope you all enjoy.

Wish we were there, but Chicago called. And a baptism.

Ah, Devils Elbow. Somewhere out on the net, I found a three second clip of my father racing his D stock hydroplane (D88M) around that corner circa 1952.

Trying to explain to him how I found it, and where it was, and why it was there was, um.... interesting.

Next year, next year.
