It's again approaching that time of year for our Holiday Get together.

Nancy & I are willing to host the Saturday Evening meal and gathering at our home in Farmington Hills, Mi. That being said we are also willing to stand aside if someone else has the burning desire to host the gathering.

We are proposing that the event, a daytime field trip, and the evening dinner & festivities, be scheduled for Saturday December 11, 2010.

So please let us know what you think and if the date is or isn't good for anyone, and we can take it from there...

Regards,

Pat & Nancy Henahan

Pat,

I was thinking about the same thing this afternoon. The 11th would be great.

Pot Luck again I suppose?

home Aside posted 10-15-2010 07:46 AM ET (US)     Profile for home Aside  Send Email to home Aside
Jeff,
Yes, as usual it will be Pot Luck, We can pick a main dish of meat and/or fish which Nancy & I can provide and then others can bring dishes to compliment.

I thought I'd get the thread started as early as possible...looking forward to it

Pat,
Count me and Carmen in. I will plan to bring my usual scalloped potatoes dish and I'm sure Carmen will cook something tasty as well for dessert.

Yup for Kathy and I. Would you like us to bring an Ossian ham like we had last year?
home Aside posted 10-19-2010 09:07 PM ET (US)     Profile for home Aside  Send Email to home Aside
Dave & Kathy,
Thanks for the offer of the Ham, lets see what general consensus is on menu ideas, not to say we can't & not to offend, but We might want to change the menu around so we don't have the same meal each year...so let's see what everyone thinks....

Also, lets all say a prayer for Dorothy Zammit of Lockeman's Hardware & Boats, she apparently fell ill while at work recently and isn't doing well. Lockeman's has been our morning host since we started doing the Holiday Rendezvous and I hope to see Dorothy there for many years to come....

Dave, Doug, and the rest of the Lockeman's family & crew are in my thoughts & prayers

Pat, Thanks for the heads up on Dorothy Zammit, she will most certainly be remembered in our prayers.

Does anybody have any ideas for some kind of new wrinkle to the morning/early afternoon portion of the day? Lockeman's and Nautical Lumber should definitely stay on the agenda (assuming they've both agreed to be included again), but how about adding something new to the agenda?

Possibilities:

- A stop at Colony Marine on the way from Lockeman's to Nautical Lumber, to check out some new Boston Whalers
- A stop at J.W. Westcott Company - I'm not sure if there is much to see or do there, but some time ago Jim H got a ride on one of their mail boats (Start here and click the "Next" button: http://continuouswave.com/boats/westcott/ .
- A stop at the Coast Guard station in St. Clair Shores for a tour.

Does anybody have any interest in any of these, or is the day too full already? Does anybody have any other ideas?

home Aside posted 10-21-2010 01:07 PM ET (US)     Profile for home Aside  Send Email to home Aside
Good ideas Kevin...

We did the Dosin Great Lakes Museum a few years ago, I wouldn't mind doing that again, and there is a Coast Guard Station on Belle Isle, we could kill two birds with one stone as they are both on Belle Isle.

Where is Colony Marine?

With all the Homeland Security, I don't know if Coast Guard would do a facility tour, I'll see if I can get tin touch & find out.

Colony Marine has a showroom in St. Clair Shores, on Jefferson between 9 Mile and 10 Mile, the stretch of road known as "The Nautical Mile". I'm not sure how many Boston Whalers they have on display. Here's a link for the St. Clair Shores location: http://www.colonymarine.com/content04.asp?nav=97913& . Their Saturday hours appear to be 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

The Dossin Great Lakes Museum is also a good idea.

We just visited USCG Station Charlevoix last Sunday w/ Dr Howard Tanner and Merl Keller both retired DNR to visit the research vessel Steelhead. We had to make arrangements and once at the station we each had to sign a log and hand over identifications (driver's license) and that was it.

My bet is if you contact the station they would arrange a visit for such an esteemed group. I can check w/ Station Grand Haven USCGAUX to determine protocols if you want. Perhaps the station there has an AUX who could arrange a tour. I think it'd be real cool.

Maybe some of you DTW guys ought to join the local AUX. You know Sheila is a big shot now.

Hell Everyone,
Just a quick note, sorry I've been out of touch, I was out of town hunting for a few days, during which time ,while brushing leaves & pine needles off the roof I managed to fall from the roof of my hunting cabin. I am now nursing a severe case of bruised ribs, and to say that I'm sore is an understatement I'm reminded of with every breath.

I've been in contact with U.S. Coast Guard Station Belle Isle, they do have tours and I hope to lock in our date on Monday.

Right now I figure tentatively, Lockeman's in the early A.M. Coast Guard Station Belle Isle and/or Dosin Great Lakes Museum,in late A.M. Nautical Lumber around or after lunch time (Mike don't take that statement to mean I think you're supplying lunch, I'll give you a call this week regarding that issue). My place for the evening food & festivities.

Feel free to chime in with meal suggestions/food contributions, and other ideas, again sorry for the dealy in planning.

and remember, Old wooden ladders suck, no matter how well you check them out. and it's not the fall that hurts you, it's the sudden stop!

In case anybody is wondering, Lockeman's is still in business. I drove down there today, thinking this was the day for our rendezvous. I have no idea what made me think the rendezvous was on December 4.

Anyway, because of this little scheduling snafu on my part, I will not be able to attend the dinner on December 11 at Pat's house. I committed to attending the MSU v. UM outdoor hockey game at the Big House when I believed that our rendezvous was on December 4. I will join you all at Lockeman's on December 11, and I will most likely take part in the Coast Guard tour and the stop at Nautical Lumber.

Unlikely on the Tom G thing. I'm not sure he is interested and does not have a Whaler. Maybe Charlie who there last year, former Whaler, Grady, Egg Harbor owner who is in the chair, great guy - not an easy life. Wants nothing more than to get his own boat again.

Gail and I just want to thank you for a wonderful evening. Too bad we had to leave when we did, however we enjoyed the time with old and some new faces. And great food too!

Made it back, crashed for five, up and got to Metro. Earlier then needed, but was concerned about the weather. Sat in the plane to Columbia for two hours and two deicing cycles before launch.

I'm glad I didn't leave my winter coat in the car, it's freking cold and windy down here.
