I'll create this placeholder for a more northern rendezvous site. This is certainly more convenient for me. Much cheaper too, as I won't need to deal with ferry costs. I'm still working towards attending the Jarrel Cove event too, so don't take me off of that list yet!

Fishrswim - What tide height is needed to be able to use the city dock in Oak Harbor?

Dates: I think we need to keep 7/15 off the table to allow people to attend both events if they want to. I personally cannot make it 7/28 through 8/5.

Crescent Harbor Daytime Tides (feet, PDT):
7/21 - 06:25 AM 10.1
12:55 PM -0.9
08:01 PM 12.2
7/22 - 07:14 AM 9.9
01:34 PM -0.1
08:31 PM 12.4

8/11 - 06:44 AM 1.2
03:11 PM 9.4
07:50 PM 7.4
8/12 - 07:41 AM 0.9
04:06 PM 10.0
09:06 PM 7.2

8/18 - 11:54 AM -0.2
06:43 PM 11.9
8/19 - 06:22 AM 10.6
12:33 PM 0.4
07:12 PM 12.1

At this point, my preference would be for August 18 or 19, but any of these dates would work for me.

I could be up for two rendezvous and Oak Harbor sounds like a good area too. Ian Jeffers who own Penn Cove mussel farm is a client of mine. Perhaps I can try to get some fresh clams and mussels for us if the dates work out:)

Chris,
That would be really special. I'd like to do a trip down to Penn Cove to see the operation, if they give tours. I saw a piece on the local news about testing for contamination, after the recent sinking of that derelict tub. They made it sound as though the 2 main methods of testing for contamination were tasting and smelling. Seems distinctly low tech in this day and age.

Dennis

Chriscz posted 06-23-2012 02:26 PM ET (US)     Profile for Chriscz  Send Email to Chriscz
I can ask to see if a tour is possible, it's quite likely, Ian and his folks are great. It was a real shame that his operation had to shut down due to the vessel sinking.
Regarding the testing, taste of shellfish is and has been the method with lab follow up if source is a question or for more detailed quantification. In shellfish, hydrocarbons are easily perceptible at very very low levels.
Another reaso. The shellfish growers are such champions of water quality.

lets pick a date, and I will make every effort to make it. My work makes it hard to 100% commit but August currently looks good. I will be coming from Lopez Is, and would make a early morning run to Oak Harbor.

I drive by the mussel farm almost every day. They seem to be working again and I hear the mussels are back on the market. I'd think that if you have a tide of 2' or more you'd be ok to use the city dock. At very low tides you can see the channel that's been dredged recently.

I'll also check with the harbormaster tomorrow about guest moorage. BTW the OH Yacht Club has reciprocals on F Dock.
fishrswim posted 06-25-2012 09:29 PM ET (US)     Profile for fishrswim  Send Email to fishrswim
I did talk to Chris, the Harbormaster at Oak Harbor this afternoon. He is very interested in having the Whaler Rondy here. They will provide "Welcome Bags" for everyone. They will put grills and a shelter on F Dock if we want to have a party out there. F dock is set up for this kind of thing with picnic tables room to move around and a great view. There is also a fire pit in the park by the Harbormaster office and they will provide fire wood for us.

Moorage is .89 per foot per night. But there's some sort of discount for fuel that's applied to the moorage fee. There is water and power on the docks. There are toilets on F dock. Toilets, showers and ice are available at the main building. Fuel is ethanol free.

There is plenty of room for us any week except July 15-22 which is Race Week and it gets pretty crazy then.

BTW, if you're a Yacht Club member, OHYC has a couple of reciprocal slips.

So, of course I'm up for it, lets pick a date and see what happens.

Fishrswim,
Thanks for checking into things and getting this great info.

How about the weekend of August 18 & 19? Either day works for me. Picking the 18th might allow overnighters to camp if they want.

My wife & I will be coming down from Orcas. JZAB - perhaps we can head down together if the timing works out. I'm pretty much a novice, so company is always appreciated.

Actually the weekend of 18 / 19 August is the only weekend I can't be there. Our local fly fishing club is having our annual picnic that weekend.

How about the previous weekend August 11 /12 or August 25/26? Better tides as well. At a minus anything we'll be looking at a mud flat rather than a pretty water view with the reflections of downtown Oak harbor.

I'd prefer the weekend of 8/25-26, if possible. How does that look to the rest of the potential attendees?

I live here so Aug 25/26works for me. If we agree on the date, I'll set it up with the Harbormaster.

My Whaler lives at B dock Slip 20/22. As of yesterday it's sitting on an EZ Dock Boat Port. A drive on/off boat dock. It lets me keep the boat under cover, on the water without actually being IN the water. You can check it out while you're here. Here's a look at the boat Port in Operation at the Miami Boat Show.

I just got back from an extended trip to the East side of the mountains, so Ive been out of touch for a week.

I just did a count and it looks like
fish, Jazb, Pierce, Kglinz, DVollrath are in.

Not sure about Chrisz. Let me know if there are more of you out there who would like to come.

I'll talk to the Harbormaster tomorrow to see what he needs to hold the slips for us and let you know what, if anything, I need.

OK I talked to the Harbormaster. No problems as far as slips for as many as want to come. I'll keep him informed about the numbers and as we get closer, he'll designate which slips we'll be in. So talk to your friends and maybe we'll get a few more.

Al,

Either the North side of Samish Island with the Sport or North end of the Swinomish Channel with the Revenge.

I am told now that the entire Swinomish Channel from the railroad bridge to the Hole In The Wall is no wake. So with the Sport I would use it at speed and go slow in La Conner. With the Revenge, I guess I would go around and through the Pass or just play dumb.

John

fishrswim posted 07-18-2012 09:11 PM ET (US)     Profile for fishrswim  Send Email to fishrswim
Yep, the entire Swinomish channel has long been a no wake zone, and the residents are pretty serious about calling in violators. But Deception Pass should be no problem unless there's a storm, which is pretty unlikely this time of year.
JMARTIN posted 07-19-2012 01:30 PM ET (US)     Profile for JMARTIN  Send Email to JMARTIN
I will go around then on the way to Oak Harbor if I have the Revenge. Probably come back through the Slough/Channel. Once out of La Conner, I can go on plane and be at Twin Bridges before I get caught.

So if you keep your 22 foot fishing boat at the Port facility, you have at least an hour dead slow putt every time you want to go out.

Would I get a ticket running at speed in the Sport? I doubt it. I have seen Tribal boats at speed in La Conner.

Al, you want to buddy boat or need a ride? I will not be much help, I have never been to Oak Harbor by water. I never been south of Goat Island in 30 years. It's shallow to the left is about all I know but I do have navigation aids.

Still struggling with a corroded 150 merc and parts issues, But would love to make it. I have volunteered for SeaFare and my goal is getting in the water asap, hopefully next weekend. Golly, I sure hope so. It has been 7 months of this. LOL......

I will be the whaler on the log-boom or maybe the pits. I don't kn ow for sure.

SeaFare is a yearly event that runs for weeks, but my part is the hydrofoil races, on Lake Washington, in the Seattle area.

Then if it all goes well swith our Whaler and SeaFare you may see us at Oak Harbor.

Is anyone planning on leaving from Shilshole? That will most likely be my point of departure.
Also how serious is the interest in visiting the Penn Cove shellfish operation? I can try to get something organized as a field trip, if there is interest.

I am still very interested in a side trip to Penn Cove, if you don't need to call too many favors to pull it off. I've always been interested in the process, and the product is superb.

There are a couple of nice motels (Coachman, Best Western) on SR20, but about a couple of miles away.

There are several B&Bs in Coupeville (Anchorage Inn) and a motel (Coupeville Inn) just steps away from the Coupeville Wharf.

The local bus service serves the Marina on call I'll check with them tomorrow to get the details. Other than that, it'd be a cheap cab ride to the motels especially if you buddy up.

OK, I finally got a reply from Island Transit. They don't go where we need them and quit before we'd be packing up for the day.

There is a taxi in Oak Harbor 360 675-1244. Probably your best bet.

I talked to Chris, the Harbormaster this morning. He's planning to put us on F dock all together. F dock is the first dock inside the breakwater and has the most room for parties. It has a picnic tables, the best view and easiest access. Our slips will be marked to indicate the Whaler rondy. So just pull in, tie up and go to the office to check in. They'll have your welcome package.

The marina staff will put BBQ grills and a shelter out there for our use. And they will put firewood at the fire ring in the park just past the marina office for us. However we'll need someone to bring an ax or hatchet for kindling and fire starter.

The personnel gate into the Marina locks automatically at midnight. So, if you're planning a night in the clubs, just be sure to be back before midnight.

In addition, I found out that the Coachman Inn (360-279 2902) provides a marina shuttle service if you stay with them. The owner is a long time boater and Yacht Club Member.

DVollrath posted 08-08-2012 05:36 PM ET (US)     Profile for DVollrath  Send Email to DVollrath
Fish,
Thanks for finding out about the shuttle from the Coachman. If my wife ends up coming, we'll go that route. If not, I may wrap myself around the inside of my boat after some liquid sleeping aid.

Hopefully you can make it on Sunday so we can meet. We'll likely need to leave by mid-morning though.

So how are we going to cook all of the great crab and shellfish we'll be catching? The flamethrower I use at home isn't all that portable. I could bring the burner and pot, but the propane is another matter. How do you guys do it when traveling by boat?

We caught 17 crabs this weekend over 2 days, but unfortunately lost a pot. 150 feet of leaded line in 95' of water, and trap was weighted so I don't think it was dragged off by the current. The crab just got a little more expensive...

Looks like an official tour of Penn Cove Shellfish won't work for our weekend. I spoke with Ian Jefferds the owner and the weekend of the 25th is unlucky timing. Normally he would love to accomodations us and show us around. However he will be out of town that weekend and he will be short staffed with summer vacations prior to their big fall seasons of long hours. We are welcome to look around ourselves.
Sorry about any early hopes being dashed.

Chris,
Thanks for checking. Perhaps we can just do an informal look-around if people are interested.

Gus,
Mussels may not be on the menu after all, but hopefully we can still snag a few crabs. Corn would be a nice addition. I'll be bringing a very large pot for the crabs, and it can do double duty for corn as well.

Dennis

gusgus posted 08-16-2012 02:21 PM ET (US)     Profile for gusgus  Send Email to gusgus
Corn it is!

I plan on bringing a good selection of drinks, sodas, water and maybe a few beverages of adult value as well.

I am game to bring most anything that might help. I plan on driving up and launching at Oak Harbor.

Is there one specific motel, most are going to stay at?

It would be nice to synchronize, since I have a large vehicle and could act as the taxi dude for others (sorry taxi guys)

Folks,
I will likely not be able to bring my boat, perhaps not even show. My newish motor seems like it is only running on 3 of 4 cylinders, and I'll need to take it in for service. Rough lower rpms, 3/4 of top speed, 3/4 of previous fuel economy.

We'll see if we can drive up for the day.

John,
Thanks for the offer, but if I come it will likely work best to drive. I have an appointment to drop my boat off at IMC on Lopez on Saturday morning. I'll head down to Oak Harbor in the afternoon if it works out.

I did read troubling clauses throughout my Yamaha owner's manual warning against running out of fuel, stating that it could damage the engine. This was the case when mine stopped working well. A crab pot or foot had jarred loose the fitting to the fuel tank.

I'd really like to meet everyone & see your boats. The timing of this malfunction is really unfortunate, but that's probably always the case.

Im currently sitting at seatac, and will not be back by Saturday. In the future if you are in the bay come by for coffee or ??? I won't have time to fill the propane tank though, so JohnM should still bring his. Someone with a boat, :( , should probably bring a trap and catch some crabs too.

What time does everyone think they'll be arriving?

I will be there (late) but don't need a slip.
Ed (Frenchy) may be there and is a marina resident.

If other boats are coming please let me know.

Do we want grills on F dock?
Do we want firewood at the fire ring in the Marina Park?

Weather looks pretty good for the weekend so far.

Neal

Al (Einar) & I will both be heading back to Orcas later Saturday afternoon.

Pierce's last post said only for the day, but perhaps he's changed his mind.

See you all Saturday.

John Martin,
Al & I will be leaving Lopez around 9:30AM. When were you planning on leaving? Do you want to try to sync up?

The plan is to be digging some steamers at 6:30 and then heading to the boat. I can bring a burner if that makes life easier also.

If someone knows where you can drop some pots, I will bring them and the puller. I'm rigged for 60 to 80 feet. Bring your license.

I should be ready to leave Twin Bridges by 9:30 also. I will head out Guemes and call.

The recifier did the trick. I am charging 13.15 volts at idle.

The boat is going in the water tonight and I can leave any time tomorrow morning.

I am 25 minutes from Orcas landing, up the west side of Orcas at West Beach.

I'll be coordinating with Dennis so we can drop his boat at Lopez. I think we'll head to Oak Harbor from there.

The weather looks great. The wind is way down from Thursday which would have made for a snotty crossing.

Al

I am bringing some beer, burgers, and buns.

RE crabs.

Crescent Harbor in about 80 feet. Bowers Bluff in about the same depth. Or East of Polnell Point in about 50. Watch your pots. There seems to be a lot of pot robbing going on this year.

A fine time was had by all.

Met up with Dennis and Al for a beautiful ride down to Oak harbor from Biz Point. The Revenge was a transport vessel, Steamer pot, steamer clams, crab cooker, propane, crab boiling pot and crab traps.

Got to the Marina and found the spot.

Al and Dennis has motor troubles and had to boogie back home. I ran out to Snatelum Point and dropped some pots.

Bought some moorage and I'm in for the night.

Later that afternoon, I gave away a spot, some clams, more clams. Fished the pier with the locals, arranged the boat and thought "If I was home, I would be mowing the yard."

View from the walk to town, sure was a gorgeous day, a bit lonely though. I bought a new radio for the boat and had dinner.

Next morning, gave away the rest of the clams, left the dock and had the most unusual crab pot pull.

Got two limits, nice big crabs, gave away one of those limits also.

Smooth water on the way home, and then I mowed the yard.

I think the Rendezvous was even more successful than the Southern Washington one.

Nice Pictures. Sorry there weren't more attendees. Especially myself.

I'll put it together again next year if you guys think it's a good idea.

It is a terrific spot for a get together with the picnic areas on the docks and the Water Loo at the end of the dock. Town is not far away. Crabbing was good, I would go back.

Post some of the pictures you took on the way down Dennis. I have never seen the Revenge on plane from the side before.

Al & I spotted a fleet of boats, which had spotted at least 2 Orcas. We really couldn't slow down that much due to Al's motor issues, so these are from far away with a small lense:

Thanks Dennis, nice pictures, nice day.

Wow my bow is in the air! That was about 3600 rpm, 28 mph. That is where I seem to get the best fuel economy.

On the way back in I ran at 3400, 24 mph and got better fuel economy. It must be that I had less weight, only one guy and his stuff aboard and less fuel in the tank than normal.

I thought I was really getting great fuel economy since I switched out power packs. I was seeing 2.8 to 3.5 miles per gallon depending on the current and wind. Since then I have determined that my flow meter needs to be calibrated. I am about 10% off so it's 2.5 mpg to 3.2 which looks normal.

Oak Harbor looks like a very nice facility. I am sorry I did not make it; the timing was off for me though the weather that weekend could not have been much better.

So just the three of you were there?

Yep, 3 was the high count.

Sorry I missed it as well. One of these will work out for me.
I have my boat in the water at Shilshole for this month, so if anyone is headed out for some fishing let me know and I can snap some waterside photos.
Tom, I think I saw you headed off to Bainbridge on Friday morning.

Chris -- If it was Friday, it was my brother and a nephew going fishing; we didn't head over to Bainbridge until Saturday. I'll probably go out Wednesday or Thursday morning before work for some Coho.
