O.k., so it’s only two boats and only one of them is a Whaler, but I’m representin’.
I’ve posted reports of my yearly Baja trip before.
This year was much the same except that I brought along a GoPro and shot video instead of stills. I’ve since decided to stick to photography, but it was an amusing experiment.
The short version is that we tow my 18 Outrage and a friend’s Bertram 20 four hundred miles from Dana Point, California to Bahia de Los Angeles where we launch the boats, load them with gear and what feels like several metric tons of ice (350 pounds per boat) and run an additional 50 miles south to Punta San Francisquito. Once there we establish our base at what’s left of a terribly dilapidated resort and spend the next four days spearfishing.
On the last day we load everything back into the boats and dive our way north, hopscotching the islands to Bahia de Los Angeles. Home the next day. It puts about 300 miles on the Outrage. It’s an amazingly good time, and since we’re in Baja, we can count on a host of unexpected challenges, which only add to the adventure.
I haven’t the patience to produce a proper video, but I cobbled together a collection of clips that I hope some will enjoy in the spirit of – well – why the hell not?
