Time to start discussing the 2013 Northern California Rendezvous.

America's Cup?
Did Napa ever get their docks done?
Bodega Bay?
or ???

Looks like we will have to wait another year for the next Napa River Run.

Napa City Council OKs New Downtown Boat Dock

December 11, 2012

After a six-year absence, downtown Napa is about to get its boat dock back. On Tuesday, December 2, City council unanimously allocated $1.5 million to construct a 176-foot-long, 10-feet-wide boat dock on the west bank beneath the Napa Riverfront development, just south of the Third Street bridge.

Friends of the Napa River have worked with resource agencies, the Flood Control District, City staff and Council to rebuild the only access to the river in downtown Napa suitable for power and sail boats as well as kayaks and canoes.

Well, I have been a bust the past few years, due to trailer issues, but I have a very nice, road-worthy trailer now. Prior commitments 6/26-6/30/13.

We usually do it a little earlier than June.

And Adm. Linda and I have a prior commitment May 4 (our
wedding reception. We got hitched this past Saturday.)

Chuck Tribolet posted 02-21-2013 03:39 AM ET (US)     Profile for Chuck Tribolet  Send Email to Chuck Tribolet
It sure has been slow.

There was some discussion of doing something for the America's
Cup in early to mid-September.

We could also try Bodega Bay in the fall.

Good Morning everyone! and congratulations, Chuck!

I haven't been visiting the "Trips and Rendezvous" section because its winter (or is it still?)

I just checked our May calendar and the only weekend I'm not committed is May 11-12 and that Sunday is Mother's Day, not likely for a good turnout.

I haven't seen a post on CW from Tony or Warren in a long time.

I'd be open to considering another time of the year if that is what the group decides.

I was wondering about Tony and Warren, perhaps they are traveling. Maybe we can tap into facebook this year and see if we can get a bigger turnout (once details are decided upon).

I regret not being able to attend some of the earlier Rendezvous, seemed like you had very impressive showings.

Hi Gang!

Congrats Chuck and Linda!! I would love to be in no matter where we go... I know some of us have been spoiled by the Bodega "House" being so close with the killer boat parking and all... whatever the deal... a "house" with some kind of boat accommodations is a good thing..(thinking)

Maybe we need to take up a collection to help the poor cause of that America's Cup? Seriously though.. I agree it's time to brainstorm on the best plan, locations, etc.

I will nudge Tony and Matt to visit this thread.... we might be able to summons "skiff" because he has a keen interest in the Cup..

Monterey and Santa Cruz deserve a good look... Monterey almost always having no wind in the mornings. Can we find a good rental "house" in SC, Moss, or Monterey?

Napa or some SF Bay location could also be nice. Let's keep ideas flowing

elaelap posted 03-07-2013 03:20 PM ET (US)     Profile for elaelap  Send Email to elaelap
That Bodega Bay rental house is so great -- and inexpensive compared with hotels in other locations -- that I guess I'd vote for BB once again, especially because we're expecting another bumper salmon season and maybe we'd luck out with the weather. But several of us have been talking about another get-together later in the year during the America's Cup extravaganza; maybe basing ourselves in Petaluma, heading down the Pet River into the Bay and thus avoiding the insanity of launching in Sausalito or The City during that time. I think I'll only plan to spend one day on the water during the Cup, just to feel the excitement and be part of the fleet...probably won't even be able to get close enough to see much more of the contenders than their mastheads.

So--regular rendezvous in Bodega Bay (or wherever consensus leads us), and a brief one during the Cup.

andygere posted 03-11-2013 05:49 PM ET (US)     Profile for andygere  Send Email to andygere
I've been conspicuously absent from the last few NorCal events because I've been coaching my son's Little League baseball team, and we have games every Saturday through the end of May. If it were later in the year (early fall sounds good) I'd be back in it in a heartbeat.

It's unreal how long that Napa project has taken, but I suppose it's a small miracle to get any sort of waterfront project done at all in California. Some day...

And Congratulations to Chuck and Linda, great news for some of the nicest folks I know.

Porto Bodega was great let's do that again. This time with better weather and fishing :)

We are Whalermen if our boats were built for America's Cup we would be Sailermen...why so confused?

OK, I am starting a new job, May/June will be out for me. September would be a possibility, but I would likely fly in and deadhead on someone else's boat, won't have enough vacation time to tow round-trip. Will follow this thread.

Wow...what's going on here???

Waiting for a few boat parts then will be up and running in a week....let's get together for some whalering, great company, great food, and a generally fun time.

Sounds like the bite may pick up in Bodega maybe we can at least organize an informal reunion for the local crew!

OK, I'll stir the pot a bit. How about second half of Sept.
(so the kids are back in school) or first half of October?
The date will probably be a function of the availability of
"The House".

And when does Salmon season close?

Salmon open until Nov 10th

Ah September...calm seas, rockfish, salmon, yes! Maybe I'll launch in SF and fish my way up to Bodega, spend the night, and fish my way back home.

17 bodega posted 05-06-2013 06:56 PM ET (US)     Profile for 17 bodega  Send Email to 17 bodega
I like Chuck's idea... maybe even August...meaning abalone, rockfish, Salmon, etc... full swing bringing the seafood feast to unprecedented proportions. Really anytime in the late summer/fall season would be great!

Sean... I agree. Let's get together for an interim get together. I am in for sure. Only been out a couple of times and the salmon bite seems on the rise. I know my Strike 3 buddies will be in for some type of get together as well. I've still never met Jasper and his crew and after seeing these awesome vids year after year I need to be watching what these guys are doing right!

You know how to get a hold of me...any of you.. Now is the time.

Chuck,

I would be happy to check on the house availability from here in Sebastopol, if you will forward me the contact info. Some but not all Sept. and Oct. weekends work for me, and seems the weather would be more predictable at that time of year, except for the possibility of an early rainy season start.

Hello? Is anyone out there??

Amazing and sad the rendezvous has fallen through. Perhaps without Tony leading the charge this is what we get...

SO, anyone still up for a party in Bodega? We can enjoy some rockfish and halibut action in hopefully calm end of summer / early fall weather...

OR, if the locals are up for a day trip may I suggest salmon along the Marin coast...

Itchin to fish and gawk at whalers...

To celebrate and toast Tony's passing, I'm planning on doing something at Bodega Bay. I emailed Porto bodega regarding the 3/2 rental we have used in the past.
They have October 4-6 available. It costs approximately $700 for 2 nights.
Last time we had one couple and 3 single guys splitting the cost.
Other options include renting the other 1 or 2 bedroom unit, Camping at the Adjacent RV park or campground. Or for locals, just coming for the day.
Chime in you can come or want space in the rental.

Linda and I would be in for that weekend. I'll probably be
a bit non-mobile (hernia surgery by my belly button, no heavy lifting),
but can certainly sit around and help remember Tony, who was
one of the good guys.

For those of you who have admired Tony's photos, before he was
a lawyer, he was a newspaper photographer.

Early October is great for us. I did not enter into a discussion of dates as our schedule is still somewhat unclear. We should be in that area on the way home from AK. We are in an RV and will make arrangements for a place to park. We will not have a boat as the miles and ferry cost made that impractical. Hope to meet you all in October. Dave

Tony's wife Edie has set up An ash scattering for Saturday on the 65' New Sea Angler at 6:00? We can follow the boat out in our boats or ride onboard and attend the memorial.
Edie has also rented the 2 bd unit next to ours in which to hold a get together with food and beverages. Edie is doing this for Tonys friends and family who are not boaters but everyone is welcome.
More details to follow.
But we can also plan our boating adventure for that weekend.

Chuck and Linda,
Warren
JimL

Mark, do you and Jill need a place to stay? Warren has offered to sleep on the couch.

Tonys last boat ride is at 6pm, so we have all Most of Sat (and Fri and Sun) to do something on the water. Salmon is still open but slowed. Rockfish, abalone open. Or even albacore if conditions are perfect. Or just a nice cruise in the outer bay.

How's the ramp at Porto Bodega? The gal there told me high tide only, so I'm thinking I may need to use one of the public ramps? If so, I'll need to recruit help to bring the truck and trailer back to Porto where I have a slip for Saturday night.

Andy,
High tide on Sat is 11:30, so you'll be good. Even at moderate tide, I've launched. Just cheat to the side further from the dock. There's plenty of parking in front of our house across from the one lane bridge.

Here's the Tony part of Saturday's plan:
The 65' New Sea Angler leave the dock at 6:00 with anyone wishing to ride on her. We should be ready in our boats by 5:30. Edie will have flowers and wreaths to hand out. Tonys family will then ride Strike3 and follow the New SeaAngler outside the harbor to scatter Tony's ashes and toss wreaths. We'll all have our radio's on the same channel, probably 8, so that Edie can say a few words.

After we return, we'll go to a house Edie rented for food refreshments. Feel free to bring any drinks or munchies.
Warren and Chuck, and anyone else who has pics are encouraged to bring your laptop. I 'll bring my projector.

As far as boating, I'll be there Fri-Sun. Weather permitting, I'd like to take at least one trip up the coast.

I'm sorry to report that Nancy and I will not be able to attend the rendezvous. We had an electrical fire in the truck camper coming home from AK. We fled back to AZ, and are working on cleaning personal effects and disposing of the badly damaged camper. We are fine. The camper was not a huge investment. We were lucky to get off so easily. It occurs to me that many larger Whalers have most of the same systems that produced the fire. I will write to that topic under the electrical heading when I collect my thoughts. Sorry to weenie out, especially this year. Dave

Terry and I are planning to participate, from our home nearby. I don't see specific plans for a daytime cruise, and I am torn between taking my Montauk out in the evening or riding on the New Sea Angler. If Edie is on the big boat, I will likely take that option rather than dealing with pulling my boat out after dark. Is there a tentative plan for Saturday morning (weather permitting, of course)?

Also, I am curious about Friday night. Are there plans for a pot luck at the house?

Well after sitting for 15 months, my Montauk fired right up today. Runs like a champ but looks like crap. Anyone is welcome to ride with me.

What time are you guys showing at the house on Friday?

My Plan of Record is to leave Morgan Hill at 1pm. Microsoft
Streets and Trips says 2:15. Allowing some time for Murphy,
so I'm Adm. Linda and I will arrive at 4pm.

Irishcreamer: How dare your nice boat be down! When depends
on fish (Sat.) or bs (Fri. evening).

I'm going to go out on a limb and say pot luck Friday night.
Maybe start eating about 7. I'll bring some chips and dips
to get things started, and stave off the hungies for the
early arrivals.

And what sort of things do we need for Saturday night?
Any food more solid than snacks? Warren and Matt are probably
more in tune with Edie's thoughts.

If anybody has pictures of Tony, put them on a thumb drive
(full res, full quality JPEG) and get them to me as early as
possible, and I'll put them into a show we can loop.

Warren: Those saved at fairly low res (1024xXXX) and it was a
moving target as to which picture I would get. I can maybe
get a 1920x1080 projector (will maybe know in a couple of
hours), and what might be even better is a 1920x1080 monitor
(I have a 32" (aka my TV, but it works well)) which would
allow folks to watch at their leisure and not interrupt
things for a one-time show.

Friday potluck sounds good. Fuuny that Sean's bringing salmon. I just made some salmon dip and I think Steve was bringing smoked salmon also.
As far a Saturday, Edie has a friend making Paella. I imagine they'll have other stuff, but it wouldn't hurt to bring something to share.

Edie has someone who needs a place to stay, so they can use the 3rd bedroom.

The 1920x1980 projector got away, but I still think we should
do it on a monitor. No screen to setup, people can watch as
much or as little as they like.

I'm under the weather fighting a cold.... I'll be rolling in after 3 pm today.

I'll pick up something for both potlucks after I get there. Someone let me know what I can get/bring. Or call my cell phone which is listed on the roster.

See you guys later today.

What's the best route to Porto Bodega from 101 when pulling a boat trailer? It looks like there are a couple of ways to go, I'm looking for the least white knuckle route.

Stony point road to Roblar. Easy drive.

Easiest way is off 101 at East Washington.

Andy,
I think the least stressful is getting on 280 in SJ. Stay on it into SF when it will become 19 th Ave. Stay on it through SF to 101.
Even though you have the lights, there are no lane changes and you have slower speeds.
Some folks will drive 880 through Berkeley and cross over the San Rafael Bridge. Faster and no lights, but I don't like driving that Oakland,Berkeley, Richmond corridor.
There is a Bodega exit in Petaluma. I think it's Washington. It will take you to the Coast.

I'll second East Washington. Go under 101 and follow your nose. It will turn into Bodega Ave. Just keep going.
