Ok for those of you newbies I have just reserved ALL the rooms and 1/2 the efficiencies for MacRae's hotel in Homosassa Springs, FL for 4/5-4/7 2013. This leaves(after my booking) 8 standard rooms and 5 efficiencies for both friday & saturday night. I did not double check but rooms are roughly $85/night and $125 for efficiencies. You can go to their website (Macrae's of homosassa) and do a virtual tour, etc. You MUST however call them to reserve your room. You can NOT e-mail them NOR text them. You have to physically pick up your phone and speak to a human being or you WON'T get a room. I know...THE HUMANITY but it is just reality. The rooms are reserved under Boston Whaler group. If you DON'T mention this they will most likely tell you they are booked...because they are. Their number is (352)628-2922. If you call in the next 10 minutes we will....

As usual we meet at 10am at the ramp on Saturday and head to the cowpens(manatee springs and hangout) at roughly 11am getting to the springs just after noon. Bring your own beverages(we will have a keg) and food to enjoy while watching the mammals lick your prop, etc. Usually around 3-3:30 we pull anchor and head back, frequenting one or more watering holes(aka bars) on the way. Once at the hotel(roughly 6pm) we tie up the boats, some pull theirs out, etc and have a few cocktails at the Tiki bar. Roughly 7pm we start the firepit and set up the tables & chairs and get ready for our world famous "pot luck dinner". In order to make this dinner possible we need you, the participant, to bring a dish or so. Nothing huge or fancy but enough for everyone to try as this usually becomes a 10-15 course meal. Len our canteen manager supplies a keg which we all do a 50/50 to recover the cost and hopefully put a few frogtongues in the winner's pocket. We also usually have a give away of Whaler parafinalia if Whaler is in a good mood and donates some goods. Usually EVERYONE wins something. At roughly 2am when everyone is passed out and staggers home we call it a night. As you can see, there is usually a bit of alcohol consumption going on so if you bring children, make sure they have something to do in their room or ?? after dinner as we are not responsible for etching this kind of Pagan ritual in their young minds.

As for Friday and Sunday: Many are now coming on Friday whenever they get there. They stretch their legs, drop the boat in the water(ramp is on site)and proceed to have a few cocktails at the Tiki. We normally go to dinner at the Freezer which is a HUGE outdoor seafood restaurant down the river a 1/4 mile or so. Afterwards it is up to you but we normally hang on the deck and retell lies about what we did since last year, etc. Sunday we stumble out of our rooms and go find some choke & puke to get breakfast at. Then some of us, literally, get in our boats and ride out to the Gulf to look at absolutely NOTHING and turn around and go home. For those with smelly 2 strokes it is the only time you get to clear out your plugs as Saturday is all slow speed no wake zones. Since I stated that, you do NOT need to bring the 34' Defiance, a 9'-22 is more than adequate for what we do, I bring my 13'. The springs are springs so water is 72 degrees ALL YEAR. Bring water shoes as the bottom can be mucky and bring a wetsuit if 72 is "freezing" to you.

Hope to see everyone there again. Please reserve your room early as they do sell out quickly. You can always cancel if you wish. If you do cancel(scared?) PLEASE tell us here or contact me BEFORE you do so as we usually have people on a waiting list. You have I think 48hrs before the day to renig or be charged. Pets are NOT allowed. There is an ice machine but not a great one so try and buy a bag as one good sized cooler will wipe out the machine. If you can't bring your boat, please state so as we usually have PLENTY of room for hitch hikers. It is more of a friendly get together than a Whaler run. We usually reserve the long runs for our Suwannee or St John's river run. Do not however pass this up thinking we will have another run as they don't always get planned due to busy schedules. This one however is EVERY year so come & enjoy the ole Florida experience at Homosassa Springs this spring.

Impressive...not one e-mail was sent back by mailer-demon this year. If you are reading this and did NOT receive an e-mail and thought you were on the list, contact me as I will put you back on with a correct/current e-mail or add you as a new member if so be the case.

Rooms are gone for Saturday, only efficiencies left. Might be some rooms left for Friday as not everyone is staying both nights.

If anyone books at another hotel locally, please post what, where, how much, etc so those who do not want to spend $40 more a night for an efficiency can find alternative housing.

A Word to the Wise:
I called today and they only had three Efficiencies left, so I took one for Friday and Saturday night.

But . . .

If any of you with regular rooms decide to back out, please let me know in advance so that I can move over to one of those.

Thanks!

--- WhalerAce

FYI....they do have more efficiencies than the 3 stated above by Ace. I only "reserved" 5 out of the 10 they had so in "theory" there are 7 efficiencies left.

Any idea as to the time most people will arrive on Friday?

Tohsgib posted 03-08-2013 12:30 PM ET (US)     Profile for Tohsgib  Send Email to Tohsgib
Usually 12-6pm with most getting there 1-3ish. If you can't get there before check-in time(5?) let us know and we can get your room key for you. I thought you were only coming Sat as you live nearby? The above info. goes for anyone who is coming up Friday. I usually get there 2ish and 1/2 are there already and the others straggle in over the next couple hours. Keg is tapped when Len & I pull in so....
Tohsgib posted 03-08-2013 12:34 PM ET (US)     Profile for Tohsgib  Send Email to Tohsgib
FYI...as far as I know we have all 9 rooms booked and 6 efficiencies. Only 1 or 2 are coming sat only. This is as far as I know and we may have more that booked without posting(Tom Serio), got the info from my Facebook page, or are day tripping. That means roughly 12-14 boats and probably 40-50 people(for those aquiring giveaways from Whaler).
Jamesgt727 posted 03-08-2013 02:16 PM ET (US)     Profile for Jamesgt727  Send Email to Jamesgt727
Thanks. I decided to come up Friday and stay until Sat evening. Had something planned for Sunday previously. It was easier that way because I don't live near there, just have a river/vacation house in Weeki Wachee. That way we can just bolt, and I wont have to shut that house down prior to leaving. I'm bringing a total of four people and two Whalers. We should be up there around 12-1 pm if you want to get started early! I've got three people working non-stop to get the 15-footer ready for the water in time....it's gonna be real close. If for some reason, the Whaler isn't ready can I bring my Wahoo!?

Gopro will be packed, please have everyone sign a waiver. I already have a good song picked out...

Alafia was fun. Saw about 15 manatees at the spring. Beer shed was good, Dixie's had a band.

Hey this will be my first year and I would like to contribute. Could someone give me some hints on what to bring?
Tohsgib posted 04-01-2013 12:22 PM ET (US)     Profile for Tohsgib  Send Email to Tohsgib
The keg we take up a collection. After the keg is covered what is left goes to a winner. So kinda of a 50/50 but more like Keg/Winner. At that point we give out the give aways as well which is usually shirts, coozies, key chains, to sometimes pretty big items like back packs and waterproof bags, etc. Depends on what Whaler has in their "closet".

As far as food, bring what you like but don't bring a ton. If everyone brought enough to feed 40 people we would have enough for 1600 people. I always say bring a plate or bowl like you would bring to a football party. Also don't go elaborate, we don't have a kitchen per say so it is kinda grill or reheat dishes only. Cold dishes like shrimp or ceviche, etc are great as well, just keep it cold so we don't poison anyone. Don't forget we need stupid stuff like forks & plates too. Remember this is for SATURDAY night dinner only. There is a Publix about 4 miles down the road if you just want to get it there or if we forget something like napkins.

Lastly bring what you like to drink. We do kick the keg and nothing kinda open at that point so always good to have backup plus you need beverages while you drive the boat. You can buy soda, beer & ice when you get to MacRae's but better off somewhere cheaper, especially sunscreen, etc. See ya in 4 days.

Turned out to be one of the best!!!! Great weather, lots of fun people, and Manatees in abundance for a change. Even the Schaf had fun. As usual, we motored a keg of beer up to the springs which were the usual 71'-72' degrees and spent the day in and on the water, Brats and dogs were grilled up for the savvy that know to tie up close to the keg. Not sure how many boats or people we had this but we had bunch of new faces and names to remember (or not)like Angela and Bob, James, Earl and their youngsters, Camry Dave, and a few others that I just cant remember their names. Saturday evening was again the scene of a pagan feast. Multiple rib eyes, center cut pork chops, lobster, shrimp, super secret corn, and broccoli salad. Thanks again to all, especially from Jackson, he had a great time.....

Looking forward (I think) to the video and photos.

I counted 12 boats, not all at the same time. Ace never showed. Pat I knew would'nt like usual....the sheep kept him at bay, like garlic to a vampire. Friday was fun but NO MORE FREEZER. Man was that food horrible...cheap though. Saturday was fun, tons of seacows. Water was beautiful although I never got wet. Band at the tiki was good saturday as well. Although we had a large crowd, not many made it past 10pm which means they had enough fun(or liquor) for the day. Now to find out what is wrong with my 13' Defiance. Thanks again for the ride Len & Margit.

Actually Pete, I can remember most of the weekend. We did not have some of the usual power drinkers this weekend, so Nick and I had to make do with each others company. We did manage to solve most of the worlds problems as we stayed up this 3 am by the fire. I didn't even have to wear the foil under my hat on Sunday morning....

I am going to revise the plan for next year(10th anniv) and pass it around so everyone is on the same page. This year took forever to get people in their boats and out to the springs...too rough Friday night? Then we went to the Manatee pub and everyone kinda split after a drink or so....don't mind but we got back to the hotel I think too early and hence why people hit the hay so quickly. Might have to drag it out longer or ????

Lastly....We don't care what your agenda is as long as we know what it is. What I mean is you get in your boat when the rest of us do but instead of following you go sight seeing. That is cool but let is know because we WILL stop and wait for you to catch up not knowing you went AWOL. This happens every year with Janis but we expect it. I can't tell you how many times I stopped on Sat to wait for people that never came around the bend. This REALLY sucks when a deserter has the keg.

Lastly for all of those who complained about the time of year, etc....sorry but it is what it is and it will always be the 1st weekend in April unless Easter falls on that weekend. Personally I would not want it any warmer and no the water does not get warmer the later time of year....it is a spring.

Thanks again for those who participated. For those who bailed, sorry for your loss. As usual we had new faces and familiar faces. Hope to see everyone next year again. Janis is supposably organizing a fall run(September?) and then we have the 5th annual ARRFFF in early Nov on the Alafia designed by Dave Neal. We might want to expand the Alafia to a Sat/Sun event but participation is still so few.

jimh - pictures and documentary film? You must know the secret handshake and call. Better yet, go to at least one in your lifetime. I say everyone needs to go to Oregon Country Fair, Burning Man and Homassasa at least once/lifetime.

One of the best times and best folks I have ever know'd. Too bad we had to miss it but now I know why Nick scheduled for week after we are usually able to go.

I'm down for Janis' plan and we need one for Summer up here, someplace. Seriously.

Janis threatens every year....last one was 2006. Don't schedule a flight just yet. Jim was at a Stuart gig about 2003 or 2004.

The Alafia River is really rocking this summer as mice noticed a few weeks ago. Alot of new managment of all three pubs and docks are being rebuilt....Looking forward to our next go at it....Your trip sound like a great bunch of fun.....)

Count me in, the boys and I went all the way down river to get it on a plane for a short time, and then we bolted. Thanks again for the great time, and we are already looking forward to the next one.

Yes, I go fishing every year then catch up with the group in the afternoon. Maybe we are all turning in earlier than 10 years ago because we are all getting older! And yes, I'm going to post something soon about a fall rendezvous on the St. Johns' River. Hope all this group can attend!

Not my best video, but enjoyable nonetheless. If anyone wants a specific clip, let me know.

I would also like to credit the pictures I used, but can't remember who they came from - so thank you.

See y'all soon.

Spence, great job with the video!!! I am still wondering if the evening should have been on video as well. Part of me says yes, but most of me says NO!!!

Night shooting on the gopro is decent. Most of the non-Jackson footage was grainy. Decided it wasn't worth it.

Thanks for the kind words. Follow my channel for more Whalering this summer!

love the underwater segment.......can one really swim that close the manatees? If so, I need to get down south next year.
fno.....may I catch a ride with you? BTW....when are you coming to Petoskey? Summer is coming.....it truly is the best boating season around here. Oh, who would want to be out on Little Traverse Bay or Grand Traverse Bay with ice chunks floating around, not me.

Looked at Len/an86carrera photo album. What model was the blue center console with the 150? Nice looking hull shape.

Martha - the manatees come to you. Well, they did to us that day. I just posted another video and you can see them swimming up to the group to investigate.

Martha, as a matter of fact I am on my way up next week. I fly up on Monday, overnight in Traverse City and drive up Tuesday to Petoskey. How about dinner on Monday night, on me?

I just noticed that on the other Whaler site, there are two rendezvous gathering steam, one is a NW Florida (Jax), and the other is a NE Florida (Pensacola) gathering. Are these out of range for you folks? I can try to suggest something further south or maybe join the two gatherings together to make a HUGE one? Back when I was a boy, we used to participate in Mako Marine Fishing (Family) tournaments that were similar, a little more structured but similar, and fishing was the second most important activity. It was not uncommon to see more than a 100 boats at any given gathering. And we would travel around the state to places like Crystal River, Boca Grande, West Palm, Key West, Jax, Lake Okeechobee, Walker's Cay, etc. Let me know if there might be an genuine interest, because I have the ability to put some real horsepower behind it. I have close friends that run some major annual fishing tournament series down here, and I've approached them with the concept, of resurrecting the "Mako Style" Family tournament. These organizers already have major brand backing, and know how, and I think we might be able to get some serious traction with a Boston Whaler branded family tournament/gathering, any thoughts?

Whaler used to do them all over until the bottom fell out in 2007 or so. The only thing I think they do is the Bahamas run. We used to have a great one in Sarasota and one in Stuart(free lobster). Whaler was VERY generous with lunch & dinner, free T-shirts, nick-nacks, gallons of oil,etc all for like $20/per. With the economy turned around, maybe they will start doing it again or maybe they realized it was a waste of money...dunno. We are not what Whaler wants to target, they know 80% of us will NEVER buy a new Whaler. What they don't know is the attention it gets and that we bring non-Whaler owners with us who might buy that boat(friend of ours did). I personally think it might be better than most boat shows as people ask us what is going on, etc and might think "hmmmm....what a bunch of great people and that looks like fun. I want to do that and I want a Whaler." We do the same thing with our Donzi group and Donzi looks at us the same way. Classic buyers are Classic buyers and 80% of will never change. Some of us do however like Frank, Swellmonster, etc.
