Any interest in having a get together in August? I'm up for any location I can boat to from Orcas in a reasonable length day.

We really need feedback so we can be sure and accomodate a time and place for all the people who won't show up.

The two boats that made it to Oak Harbor last year had a great time on a beautiful day.

The best part was looking at all the other Whalers. Unfortuneately, checking out one other boat doesn't take a whole afternoon.

After that we sat on the dock and didn't drink all the beer I brought. Then we spent 1/2 an hour getting my sick outboard started.

All in all a great day uninterupted by meeting new friends and exchanging whaler tales.

It was so fun I am thinking of having a solo rendezvous this year.

Al

That said I did very much enjoy meeting Dennis and John.

DVollrath posted 06-05-2013 11:49 AM ET (US)     Profile for DVollrath  Send Email to DVollrath
Wow, now I'm really excited! Al's enthusiasm is all over me like smoke from his motor. If John shows up again, I bet we can get at least 50% more boats this year.

Seriously though, it was great meeting Al & John, and it would be nice to see some others as well.

I'll float a tentative date of August 24th. Oak Harbor, Coupeville, Deception Pass, Bellingham all sound good to me.

Some guys who expressed interest last year include:
Chriscz
JZAB
fishrswim
JMARTIN
kglinz
Pierce
Tom W Clark

Any interest this year?

Dennis

Absolutely, but it depends (for me) on the schedule. I've a very busy summer this year.

I met Chriscz a month or so ago and we talked about a rendezvous so I know he would a likely participant as well.

As always, getting a good attendance depends on one person being the lead organizer and consistently and repeatedly contacting folks.

JMARTIN posted 06-05-2013 07:58 PM ET (US)     Profile for JMARTIN  Send Email to JMARTIN
Al, after you and Dennis left, it was a solo rendezvous.

I still had a good time. The Oak Harbor Marina was nice, the locals were friendly and I made new friends giving away the steamer clams I brought with me. Came home with 5 crab the next day also.

I would be interested for sure. Scheduling will be the tricky part.
I should at least be in Washington for most of August. If the chosen location is up north, I'll be on Lopez Island the 20-25th. Otherwise I'll be coming from Shilshole or trailering.
It was great to meet Tom in person recently and have met a couple of other CW members over the last couple of years on the water. I'd love to meet the rest of the PNW folks.

So how does the 24th of August look for the rest of you at this point?

Chris - Do you still connections at Penn Cove? I think it would be interesting to see a commercial operation.

Dennis

Chriscz posted 06-08-2013 01:33 PM ET (US)     Profile for Chriscz  Send Email to Chriscz
Yes, I still work with the shellfish growers on a number of projects. Last year I talked to Ian Jeffers (owner of Penn Cove Shellfish) about a tour but unfortunately the weekend chosen was one where he was out of town and his staff had off after having worked long hours on the preceding low tides.

Once a date is set, I can get in touch with Ian and see what we can do. Ian certainly was up for it, they do this sort of thing regularly.
I was just down in Northern California, Humboldt Bay working on a shellfish project where they were setting up a shellfish hatchery and seed setting facility. Taking free swimming larvae and getting them to set on oyster shell and on shell fragments (the size of a grain of sand) for the half shell market. Really fascinating stuff.
At Penn Cove they mainly do mussels and clams, which is a interesting process as well.
Keep the momentum rolling and thanks for organizing a get together!

Late August might work for us to drag the 18 down to the coast for some saltwater fun. Our schedule is still flexible after the first weekend of August.

I'll keep an eye on this thread.

Mark,
It would be great if you could make it down. I would really like to see your boat (and maybe bum a ride in it to compare with my Montauk).

That's quite a haul down from Kelowna. We used to do it every year on our way to Silver Star to catch value week skiing in the spring. Very nice country.

Hope there is a rendezvous, and you can make it.

Further south is better for me (personally), as I likely won't trailer the Montauk anywhere. -- Coupeville dock isn't a bad idea though, love it up there.

Kwik,
Coupeville wharf sounds good to me. You could likely get a few buddy boats to make the trip up from Seattle.

Since I haven't heard any negatives about the date, let's say 8/24 and people can start marking their calendars.

Who is in at this point in time?

My better half and I are in.

We'll need to do a bit of research on what paper we need to have in place to boat in US waters, Perhaps someone here can provide some info?

We could also use some suggestions on where to launch? Anacortes? Where is a suitably convenient ramp?...with reasonable fees?

We are really keen on exploring the area, as we have never been on the water anywhere in this area? Should we stay overnight at Coupeville, or should we head over to the San Juans?

Looking forward to it and open to suggestions re the above!

Great to hear you'll be coming down. Where to go & what to see will depend upon how long you are here. How much time do you have?

We would drive down Friday sometime and need to be headed for home by 3pm on Sunday afternoon.

When we are able to leave Friday may not become clear until that week. It would obviously be best if we could get on the water Friday afternoon/early evening.

Probably no overnight moorage on the Coupeville Wharf. I have never checked it out.

Mark, do you sleep on the 18 or are you planning on a motel?

John

Marko888 posted 06-27-2013 02:03 PM ET (US)     Profile for Marko888
We have yet to camp in the 18, but are game to...but it will be somwhat weather dependent as we will only have a Mills mooring cover for shelter by that date. If it can be partially secured, and the weather resonable, we might try camp.

Otherwise, we'll be looking for a place to moor and rent a cabin, or tent on shore, or similar.

I am in if the the sea trials on the repaired engine go as planned. That trial is in the middle of July.

Keep in mind Oak harbor is very close to Coupeville and we know they have a great public dock with penty of overnight capacity. So running there for the night is an easy option.

Closest launch to Coupville is Oak Harbor. One thing about Coupville is that if the wind is blowing up the Strait of Juan de Fuca it gets rough.

I did not know there was a boat launch in Coupeville.

Captain Coupe Park, 602 NE Ninth Street
This nearly one acre site is located north and east of the Wastewater Treatment Plant and provides Coupeville’s only low and no bank waterfront access under public ownership. The park also affords excellent views of Penn Cove and Mount Baker. A boat ramp, floating dock and associated boat trailer parking form the primary use of the park, although there are also picnic tables, barbecues and a public restroom

The Wharf is retail shops with a finger pier. I have no idea if the pier is public or private. It is not very big if I remember correctly.

August 24 high tide 8:ooam at 10', low at 2:00pm at 2'.

John

DVollrath posted 06-30-2013 07:06 PM ET (US)     Profile for DVollrath  Send Email to DVollrath
I'm not sure what the problem is. Coupeville Wharf looks like it will have room for 2 boats and 3 people. No wait, that was last year...

It is only about 6 miles of easy cruising from Coupeville to Oak Harbor, and the facilities at Oak Harbor are pretty nice. Coming from the south, it would only be a difference of a mile and a half.

John - Do you know much about the public launch under the Twin Bridges? Looks like that might be a free/cheap point for Mark to launch from.

Dennis

Marko888 posted 06-30-2013 10:01 PM ET (US)     Profile for Marko888
I found the Twin Bridges ramp...looks like a convenient spot.

I also found this great resource, listing a bunch ramps in the area:
http://www.nwboatinfo.com/Boat-Launches.html

Should we also post this meeting date on W Central?

JMARTIN posted 07-01-2013 04:39 PM ET (US)     Profile for JMARTIN  Send Email to JMARTIN
Twin Bridges public launch is 7 dollars a day for parking. Pretty nice launch, gets a bit tight at low tide. Definitely need a good chart to get in and out of the Swinomish Channel.

I went down to Coupeville yesterday by boat. There is a small dock, launch, grass area, two picnic tables, one barbecue thingy and some bathrooms just East of town. There was room for one boat on the non launch side of the dock. It's pretty shallow in there also. The Wharf dock in town is bigger than I thought with overnight moorage available at a dollar a foot. They have a 3 hour grace period for boaters eating, drinking and shopping in town. They also have some mooring bouys for 10 a night.

If I were to spend the night, I would go to Oak Harbor for the protection and privacy.

I have pictures but have not taken the time to figure out the new Photobucket yet.

Wow, so much excitement, looks like we might be overcrowded. Here is my plan even if no one else shows.

Leave Twin Bridges Marina Saturday morning. Might meet up with Mark, or Al or Dennis, and down the slough and out the Hole in the Wall. Cruise on down to Snatelum Point off the entrance to Penn Cove and drop a crab pot or two. Then off to the Coupeville Wharf where I might find other Whaler Nerds. Maybe have a beer at Tobys, browse the artsy fartsy shops, get something to eat. Then back for a quick pull/re bait of the pots and off to the Oak Harbor Marina to get a slip for the night.

Then I might cook up some steamer clams that I brought along and I will drink more beer. Might cook up some crab also. Fish the dock for Dogfish, visit with nerds if present and sleep aboard. Next morning off to pick up the pots and then head back North and fish for Humpies either in Skagit Bay or or pop out the Pass and fish off West Beach. Then back to the Bridges where I will probably give away the Humpies and any left over steamers.

Action packed weekend for sure. Be there or be square.

So here is my plan: leave Lopez Is early Saturday morning, and try to meet up at Twin Bridges, and cruise down the slough to Coupeville Wharf. Then head back to Oak Harbor to try, and steal some Crab and Clams. Spend the night in a motel in in Oak Harbor, and head back to Lopez Sunday am.

That is the plan for now, but what will probably happen is work, family commitments or weather will have me reading about JMARTIN’s crab, and clam feast from a far )-:

Our plan will be dictated by arrival timing, but ideally, we'll put in Friday evening, camp somewhere, then meet up with the group Saturday afternoon.

It would be good to set a meeting time for the rendezvous, plus minus 1 hour or so, so everyone can plan accordingly.

We will probably want to tour about to see as much as possible given our short window of opportunity. We'll need to be headed north by 2-3pm on Sunday.

DVollrath posted 07-10-2013 04:07 PM ET (US)     Profile for DVollrath  Send Email to DVollrath
Would it make more sense to meet at Oak Harbor and then run down to Coupeville as a side trip? Oak Harbor has lots of room, and Coupeville is smaller and less certain to find sufficient spots as we assemble.

Mark - You are welcome to camp at my place on Orcas for the night. I'll be leaving from Orcas Saturday morning, and possibly Al too.

Our place is on the west side of the body of water East Sound, near Diamond Hill. I'll check into temporary moorage at the marina I use & let you know.

You may want to check out the Canadian Regulations for obtaining an MMSI. I ended up getting one from our FCC (rather than BoatUS etc) because I'd like to visit BC waters by boat at some point. I needed to get a restricted operators license as well.

Yes, the rendezvous is still on.

I'm planning on leaving Saturday morning 8/24 from Bay Head Marina on Orcas, probably between 9:00 and 10:00. If the weather is nice enough, I'll head through Deception Pass on the outside. If not, I'll go down the slough. I'll stop by Oak Harbor, then head down to Coupeville.

I'll bring a crab pot, cooker, and propane (if I can get my insurance company to sign off on carrying that nasty stuff in a boat... :).

There may be another boat or 2 from Orcas as well.

JohnZ - We can swing by Lopez to meet up with you if you'd like.

Mark - I heard back from my marina, and you are welcome to tie up there on Friday night for free. Judy & I would be happy to host you for the night, if you'd like. We have a tent set up on a platform for guests, or you can throw sleeping bags inside my building project.

Dennis,

Thanks for checking that out. Al has also offered up some camping space so we are feeling very welcome!

With full respect to Al, we'll take the "tie up at the marina" option near Dennis's place.

Do you plan to stay in Oak Harbor, or run back home, Saturday evening?

We'll go with the flow either way. My nature will have me trying to see everything in the area when we are there!

I spoke with Oak Harbor Marina today. They have room, but would like a $5 deposit per slip held. I can front this money for the group (assuming I can get my kid out selling cookies door to door starting tonight), but I'd like a firm boat count in the next week. Who is in? Can I use your cooker for the steamers, barring red tide?
My steamer pot is about 18 inches in diameter, like a canning pot.

We are starting to get eelgrass islands in Samish Bay. That seems to happen when we get a red tide. So far so good but no guarantees on the clams.

Yes, I think that would work fine. It's one of those turkey boiler/fryer things that has perhaps a 12" diameter by 20" high. It does have a basket I could bring along to lift & drain clams.

Looks like we are up to 3 firm commitments at this point in time. Wow, if we keep growing by 50% each year, we'll take over the entire marina in a few decades....

Dennis, that sounds like a plan. We can pick a time, or you can call me when head out of Orcas. I don't know if you have cell coverage where your boat is, I don't on Lopez, but will send you my land line in an email.
Marko888 posted 08-09-2013 01:04 PM ET (US)     Profile for Marko888
If we could all get on the same VHF channel, it will make communications much easier. Which channel?
DVollrath posted 08-10-2013 11:24 AM ET (US)     Profile for DVollrath  Send Email to DVollrath
How about if we use channel 71, which seems to be allocated for both ship to ship and ship to shore?

By the way, my VHF MMSI is 367575270, but my boat has no name. Anyone else have a MMSI I could program in to my radio? More features to try out.

JohnZ - Do you have internet at your Lopez residence? If so, I could just shoot you an email when our departure time becomes a bit more firm.

Dennis, I do have internet access on Lopez so that works. I also have a land line 360 468 2861, Cell phone does not work on Lopez, but it 408 398 3476 and will have it on the boat. I will also monitor Ch 71. If you are on Orcas this weekend you should come over and check out skatelite.

We are all set for this trip, and have a couple of questions:

- Is there ethanol-free marine fuel available in the area? We usually fuel up before launching to save a few bucks. Any local recommendations?

-We've looked into camping at Deception Pass SP Saturday night, but there is no moorage available at the moment. Any other suggestions?

- Approximately how long will the run from Orcas to Oak Harbor take? ...perhaps we'd head back up that way to camp Saturday night.

Mark
mobile 250 212 8748

PS - I will not have an MMSI in place for this trip.

JMARTIN posted 08-19-2013 04:31 PM ET (US)     Profile for JMARTIN  Send Email to JMARTIN
The only place I know of nearby that has ethanol free gasoline is just past 1833 Park Lane Burlington WA 98233. It is the Skagit Farmers Cenex cardlock but accepts credit cards. My neighbor said that Super 92 octane was 4.75 a gallon. Cap Sante Marina had ethanol free 87 octane at 4.30 a gallon last Friday. I think the Oak Harbor Marina has ethanol free gas also.

I did not know there was any moorage at all for Deception Pass State Park. Coronet Bay would be the closest to the Park and that would be quite a distance by foot.

Guesstimate of West Sound Orcas to Oak Harbor with water conditions permitting a cruise speed of 25 or more would be at least 2 hours.

There are no camping places with moorage that I know of near Oak Harbor. I do not know if the Oak Harbor Marina has a spot you can pitch a tent and leave your boat in the marina.

Hi Mark,
I don't know about ethanol-free gas. Perhaps John Martin does. Will you be launching near Twin Bridges?

You could overnight in Oak Harbor, but other than that I don't have many suggestions. If you do want to head back to the San Juans, there are a number of state park islands with camping and mooring buoys or docks. James Island, Jones Island, Stuart Island are a few of them. Hope Island also has 5 mooring buoys, and is very close to Oak Harbor. James Island is about 30 miles away.

I'll likely head back to Orcas then Seattle after the rendezvous. You and your wife are welcome to spend the night at my place again, but I'm not sure about the boat. I only asked the marina owner about Friday night, but I can see if Saturday is a possibility too.

It's about 42 miles from Oak Harbor to Bay Head marina going through Deception Pass, which is a comfortable sub 2 hour trip. If weather forces us to go through the slough, it is longer (add an hour??), but at this point the forecast looks OK.

My cell is 206 372-9856. What time were you thinking about getting to Orcas on Friday?

Dennis

Marko888 posted 08-19-2013 06:07 PM ET (US)     Profile for Marko888
Thanks for the tips regarding finding good fuel. We`ll research those locations for Saturday night and then play it by ear when we are there. If the winds are calm, we'll be keen to run to one of the island listed.

We will be launching at Twin Bridges around 3pm or so on Friday, so should be in your neighborhood by supper time. We’ll find a meal on the water somewhere, and come to Bay Head Marina around 7pm or so.

Hi Mark,
If you'd like, you could join us for dinner at the Westsound Cafe on Orcas. There is a county dock a few hundred yards away that makes boating to it pretty convenient. Let me know & I can get reservation set up. Prices are reasonable by San Juan Islands standards, but nothing up there is cheap...

I'm afraid we're down to 4 boats. Al (Einar) won't be able to make it unfortunately. We'll still plan on hooking up with JohnZ at Lopez, and then with JohnM somewhere near Fidalgo.

Dennis,

Bronwyn and I will join you for dinner Friday night. The menu looks good! I'm thinking 7pm should work, but I will call if our schedule goes sideways.

We did some research this evening, and will likely just stay in Oak Harbor Saturday evening. It would be a lot of travel time to make two trips to Orcas given we have to be loaded and rolling by the middle of Sunday.

Bummer about Al. Is his engine still on strike?

So I am up on Lopez for the week. It looks unlikely that I can make it down to Oak Harbor with the group unfortunately. I don't think taking off on the last day of our stay would go over too well on the family front. That being said, I have my boat in the water up here at the Lopez island marina and will be running around most of the week. Let me know perhaps we can meet up separately. Any fishing tips are appreciated too. I heard Eagle Point was giving up some Chinook.

Chriscz, I'm at the older white house at the south end of the bay, the most southerly dock with the orange wind shock. There is a Bay Liner Classic, and a Montauk at the Dock. Please stop in anytime would love to meet you.

We are set at the marina. Our slips are F23-F27, even though I told he only 4 boats. I guess we have an extra if someone decides to surprise us.

There is a map at the Oak Harbor Marina site:

I'm up for getting going fairly early if everyone else is. I looked at current using a tool Tom Clark pointed me at:

http://www.deepzoom.com/

There is a slack in the Rosario region around 9:00AM. It also looks like the wind will be with the current in the same region in the late afternoon and early evening for the return trip.

There are fish on the West side of San Juan. We got 4 Humpies and a 15 lb white King last Sunday in Open Bay. I was targeting the Kings and hatchery Silver and my buddy was catching the Humpies on a white flasher, small pink squid. I switched to the same set up and got the King. I guess there was a bunch of krill this year and the fish like small pink things.

How many of the attendees like steamer clams? Last time I had way too many.

I might fish West Beach, right beside Deception Pass, Saturday morning and meet up with the group there.

OK, I have everyones cell, mine is 360 708 2252, and I will monitor 71. I will bring steamers and a couple of crab pots. We had fog this morning but hopefully early Saturday morning will be clear enough for a run down the Slough and out the Pass to West Beach.

I should be able to get in a couple hours of fishing before the rest of you arrive at Deception Pass. Who knows, maybe we will have some salmon to eat also. I plan on spending the night in Oak Harbor on board.

Mark, if you will be arriving at Twin Bridges around 5, give me a call. My office is right at Exit 230, the exit you will take to get to the launch. If the timing is close, I can help you launch your boat and get you pointed in the right direction to Orcas. My office phone is 800 869 7153 or call my cell.

Thanks John

We are aiming for launching by 3pm. We have a pretty dialled in trailer setup so the 18 is easy to launch.

I'm going to be relying on my Garmin 640 and compass to get us to Orcas. I will call your cell when we are in your neighbourhood to discuss route options.

We are bringing some beer, and have booked a room in oak harbor for Saturday night. We're staying at Dennis's on Orcas on Friday night, so I expect we'll first see you in person at Deception pass.

Dennis / Mark, just post what time you want to meet, and I will be out side of Fishermans Bay. Dennis what harbor are you coming out of if I head toward Orcas I don’t think I could miss you unless it is fogy. I have a Montauk with blue dodger, and will be on 71.

ChrisZ I was just down at IMC and there was a beautiful Montauk with 100hp Merc if that is yours very nice boat. If the Conquest with the twin 300’s is yours you can make to Oak harbor in 15 min your family will not even know your gone (-:

Hi Folks,
My cell is 206 372-9856.

Mark - I'll meet you at the Westsound dock around 6:45PM if you'd like to hook up then. We have 7:00 dinner reservations. We could also meet elsewhere earlier if you'd like. Let me know.

We'll be leaving between 8:30 and 9:00 from the Bay Head Marina on Saturday, right by the ferry terminal.

See Mark & Bronwyn on tomorrow, and John & John on Saturday. Sounds like we'll be eating very well!

Thanks Dennis / John M / Mark / Bronwy, I had a great time at the largest Northern Puget Sound Rendezvous ever (4 boats). I got a real kick out of crossing Rosario Strait in the Fog with Mark, and Dennis as guides. I even got to rescue a sinking sail boat on the way home it was a great day. 100 miles 13 gallons got to love a Montauk with 4 a stoke, my old boat burned that every hour.

JohnM my wife and I eat the leftover steamers tonight, lots of steamers, and had plenty left to make chowder. Any good restaurant would have charged 100’s of dollars for the clams and crab you provide Thanks Thank Thanks.

Next year 6 + boats Lopez going to start look for a date (-:

That was a lot of fun. It was great meeting Mark, Bronwyn, and JohnZ for the first time. A special thanks to JohnM for the great clams, pulling up 5 keeper crabs when I got skunked, and for keeping me from grounding my boat (to the left, to the left...).

Really nice seeing the other boats. I think I probably caught a case of Outrage 18 fever though, so I'll need to start treatment sometime soon.

Next year on Lopez.

I'll post some pictures in the next few days. Thanks!

It was a lot of fun. When we first met up and Dennis took off, I thought it might be the shortest rendezvous ever but everything worked out just fine.

Sunday was a blast also, nice weather, new boating buddies, and a great meal on the deck in La Conner. Thanks Dennis, John, Mark and Bronwyn for a fun weekend.

Next year Lopez, I will bring clams.

Bronwyn and I really enjoyed our first boating adventure in US waters! It was truly great to meet all of you, and a very sincere Thank You! for the great hospitality.

We're very sorry to have infected you with OutragEighteenItis Dennis... We find it to be the perfect boat for our use, as its both big and small enough for all the usual reasons. We did burn a lot more fuel than you and JZAB though...approximately 35 gallons or so. We have 4-stroke envy!

When we get a bit of time we'll sort through the 100+ photos we took and send the best ones out to everyone.

cheers

But seriously folks, I'll try to get them up on Monday. Right now I'm trying to regain some pride in the man over crab context. Here on Orcas through Sunday night.

By the way, I just refilled my gas tanks from last weekend. 90 miles on the nose, and 12.75 gallons. JohnZ & I were running pretty hard on the way back too.
