I just came to a startling realization. Not only did Boston Whaler invent the foam filled hull and center console, they also (I believe), may have been the very first to introduce the reverse sloping transom with integral boarding step in powerboat design! I was just looking at a picture of the ORIGINAL Outrage, the 21 footer with the ribbed sides. As we all know, it does indeed have a very nicely designed "Euro" transom. Actually, in my opinion, it's better designed then what we are seeing being universally used today. Back in 1971, it was innovative. Today, it's so common that it's become boring to look at. So, our friends the Italians, with their "Euro" trademark, really may have copied Boston Whaler, like so many other manufacturers have done over the years!

I have tried to think of any other OUTBOARD hull design that pre-dates 1971 with a Euro transom, and can't think of any. It's possible that some of those early inboard mahogany speed boats (like Chriss Craft or Riva) may have had the reverse transom, but memory fails me at the moment, and I don't know the dates. I can't recall any fiberglass boats before 1971 with the design, or even custom yachts. Historical comments appreciated which can add to my comments.

I've been informed that my memory has indeed failed me, and others preceded Whaler in this design, both wood and fiberglass. My knowledge of boats, other than things Whaler, is somewhat limited! So please ignore the above post. Jim, if you're out there, may this is something you should delete.

Oh come on Larry your not that old for memory failure!

The old Outrage and Revenge at least in my mind are pretty sexy darn craft --- not sure even what Euro means! If sexy = Euro them Whalers must be Euro----

Not sure who "invented" what -- style sort of just evolves I think out of function --- that sounds right I guess??

Somebody told me that as you get older there
are three things that go. The first is the
memory, and, uh, I can't remember the other
two. ;-)

I have been researching an artist and model-yacht designer from the 1930s in Marblehead, J. Selmer-Larsen.
Many feel that he invented the reverse slope transom and incorporated it into his winning model boats, and that the design was picked up by designers and used on an America's Cup defender.
Any ideas?
