I am looking at putting a 4 stroke on my 17' montauk, but I am concerned about the weight of these 4 strokes. I would like to get as much HP as possible without hurting the performance. I am currently looking at a 75 hp honda but this puppy weighs nearly 400 lbs.

This topic has been discussed at length in the PERFORMANCE forum. If you set the "SHOW TOPICS" preference Pop-Up to "SHOW TOPICS FROM LAST YEAR" I think you will find plenty of discussion on the powering of a Montauk with various engines. The NEO-CLASSIC forum is more for discussion of the newer hull styles, like Dauntless, Ventura, etc. |

Whaler recommends 330 lbs max engine weight for the Montauks commercial cousin. I would assume the recreational model is around the same.Louie |

Louie: Mercury's ownership of Whaler must be forcing them to change the rules. I notice that the 2001 Montauk has a Merc 90HP 4-stroke as the only engine extra cost option. This baby weighs in at 386 lb. The standard engine, the 90 2-stroke weighs 305 lb. |

rhemrah:As was stated in another thread in here, you need to get a copy of the November issue of Offshore Magazine. It has a comparison test of 4 4-strokes on a Montauk. Very interesting reading and information. Dave |

Larry: It's strange that they would put more than the commercial boats recommended max of 330 lbs & 100 hp on the Montauk. The commercial version weighs 1100 lbs, I think the Montauk is 950 lbs. Maybe they’ve beefed up the rec. version?Louie
