IM THINKING ABOUT BUYING A 95 15FT RAGE WITH A 115HP JET DRIVE? I CANT SEEM TO FIND TO MUCH ABOUT THEM,THE PRICE IS CHEAP AND IT LOOKS TO BE IN EXCELLANT SHAPE WITH A NEW ENGINE, SEEMS TO BE WORTH THE $3995 ASKING PRICE. I FISH IN THE CHESAPEAKE BAY MAINLY AND I WOULD LIKE SOME INPUT ON THIS BOAT, POSSITIVE OR NEGATIVE.I HAVE A 13FT 1976 SPORT WITH A 40HP,BUT WOULD LIKE A LITTLE MORE ROOM WITH A SMOOTHER RIDE.ANY INPUT WOULD BE GREATLY APPRICIATED.

I know the 115 OMC is a great engine. Staya way from the 14's with the Yamaha waverunner(50hp?)engine from what I hear. The price is cheap for that.

The 15' Rage with the OMC Turbo Jet of 115Hp should weight app.1200lbs.The lenght is 15'4",beam is 6'5",draft 9",and has a 23gal.fuel tank, with a 38MPH top speed. The boat will have the remainder of the 10 year hull warranty availiable, but the OMC jet drive can be a problem. The power head is no problem a stock V-4 motor. But some pieces for the jet unit are not avaliable. Most of the common wear pieces-Example:impeller,wear ring, bearing, seals are ok,but some casting pieces no longer made or availiable, from OMC.Also a Mercury jet unit is not a easy swap, there were 2 hulls 1 for the OMC and 1 for the Mercury 175 Hp jet units.I am currently trying to pull together data, but Whaler is no help on a retrofit Mercury into the OMC hull form because of liability problems.I have 2 Rages a 1992 14' 50 Hp Yamaha Jet unit, and a 1995 14' Rage II/XLT 115Hp OMC jet.Again 2 different boats inside and outside. The Yamaha jet unit is bullet proof and can be updated to 93 Hp and all parts are availliable. Can't say that about the OMC,and don't have experience with the Mercury, but it's still being made and availiable. The price is good if boat in shape.GO FOR IT! and ENJOY.

Rage 15 is a neat little boat no matter what
everyone has negative to say. The one to get
is the 98 model with the 175 merc V6 unit. It
runs close to 50mph. The only problem that
have with the OMC is performance, one person
on board will only run about 34mph, start
adding gear and people and you've got nothing. OMC coilpacks go bad, but outboard
powerhead unit uses same ones, easy to get.
Take the OMC for test run before you buy, check out for satisfactory performance.

I've been thinking about a 15 rage. Not knowing a lot about boat parts, are the discontinued OMC parts available on a used market (is their a used market in boat parts)? Or if one of the discontinued parts break, your S.O.L. ?

Thanks, for the help

Bob
I recieved the swim platform OK. I was out of town when it came and I was pleasantly surprised when I saw it.

My computer has been all screwed up so I was not sure if the return address on the box was correct. I finally got it going today and I was able to read my E-mail but when I went to send it, it crashed so I thought maybe I could get the message to you this way.

Thanks,
Mike

In searching the net OMC rages are cheap and merc ones are priced like the other whalers...

That V6 Merc must be a rocket... What year did they switch?

Pete

I think they went to the merc in 96,i heard they do about 55mph,but your right they are more expensive than the omc powered models.

BOB KEMMLER JR.;

I had one, good riddens , sold it years ago for $5000. NOT good for fishing, you cant run a straight course at low speed, Cant troll, Adding rod holders was a pain. The 115 smoked like crazy and fuel ecomony was terrible with the 23 gallon tank. The power head cover kept breaking, I went through 3 of them and quit! SAVE your money for a montauk or a dauntless a REAL WHALER! plus if you suck a bag in the intakes, what a pain to get it out!!! BE PREPARED TO HAVE SEATOW or TOWBOAT!!!!

Right on trafficlawyer, I bought one on a lark a few years ago (cheap). Sure didn't turn out that way. If you look at it the wrong way, it will clog and overheat. The good news is that there was a buyer out there as stuid as I was. Biggest piece of crap I ever had. I think Whaler is glad to have it behind them. Stick to a real boat. MONTAUK !!! Mark

mbking1;

Your'e Right on the money! BEST DAY I had with that boat was when I sold it to some putz from alabama. He was going to let his wife use it, they're probably divorced by now. HAHA. The drive was difficult to align after you pulled it out from bag or crap removal being sucked in, once I had to get towed in because the drive wouldnt align back to those clamps!

Imagine if you suck a bag offshore and have to pull the impeller housing on that crappy little boarding ladder!!!!

It's amazing indeed. There is a new post today on the general discussion board from "NUGIE". He just bought one for $2500 AFTER READING THE POSTS. I wish him well and I believe he will be very happy after he sells it. Oh Well. Mark

I am thinking about buying a 1995 15' Whaler Rage Turbojet boat with the 115 OMC motor. The owner is a mechanic who bought it, had some engine trouble, and just finished putting in a (also used, but low hours) newer, better shape, 115 and it runs great now. Everything is in PERFECT order- apolstery, gelcoat, console, electrical, ect. Think it is worth it for 4500, may get him down to 4000 ??? Thanks!

Hi..I sure hope you bought the boat. Especially if you got a good deal. I know a lot of folks here don't like the Rage 15 but I do. I bought mine in July. I had to put a fuel pump and a new impeller on her but aside from that it was in good shape. I added a top, horn and a depth finder and just got back from two weeks on the Chesapeake Bay. Ran her hard and long just about every day and didn't have a bit of trouble. We were in water from 18" to 75+', everything from calm to some pretty good chop, either way the Rage 15 handled great, was stable and the engine and drive we solid and responsive. Good luck!

I agree, after reading all of the bad information about the rage, it is great when you find a good one. I bought a '94 15 rage this summer for my son, we have had a great time. The original owner maintained in perfectly and had it stored inside so physically and mechanically it was in perfect shape. Does anyone have any experience with Smart Tabs? I would like to do something regarding trim tabs and these seem the most cost effective. If anyone has any suggestions I would love to hear about it.

Thanks

My wife just bought me a Rage 15 as a gift. She had no idea that it had so much bad press. We have had some bad luck already. We took it in for service and the guy ripped us off. He was a total scam artist.
Anyway, I have decided to do all repairs myself. After going through the boat (after the mechanic scammed us), I have discovered that the bearings in the jet drive have disintigrated. I have emailed turbo jet marine products but no reply yet. Everything is soo expensive! The engine also seems to run rough and the boat takes forever to accelerate. It would never pull a skier out of the water. I am hoping this was due to the bearing issue.
Any help on how it should perform, parts and repairs would be great.

Depends what you've got left inside the impeller assembly. Once upon a time I had a phone number for Lisa at Turbojet Marine. Dunno where I would find it now though.

I can get you bearing numbers and MFG names if you need that. Lisa has the service manuals and the bearings for that matter since she is where I got mine. I kinda wrote my own book as I disassembled my impeller housing to replace the bearings, since I didn't have the OMC puller #xxyyzz. I can give you pointers if you have some mechanical abilities around the garage.

The rough idle is probably due to the impeller bearings. Mine used to kick and stumble at idle due to the impeller actually hitting the wear ring. While I had the impeller assembly apart, I ground down the high spot in the wear ring with a Dremel tool. The high spot is being caused by a spot of corrosion that is growing behind the wear ring in the aluminum. The aluminum oxide is forcing the wear ring into the path of the impeller in that one spot.

If I find the phone number for Lisa I'll forward it your way. I've pointed a few folks her way in the past and I'll check with them to see if any of them have it.

I have a 1998 15' Rage with the 175 Merc v6 and I have had to do very little to it. I have had a little over a year now, but I have had the same problem from the get go. It wants to get hot after only 5 or 6 minutes of idol. It is fine as long as I am just barely moving.
ANY SUGGESTIONS AND (NO) SINKING IT IS NOT AN OPTION?

I owned and operated a Rage 15 for three years prior to purchasing a new 2006 Montauk 170. I agree with Trafficlawyer 100 %. Useless to fish with, unable to steer a straight line when moving slowly... struck the dock several times, smokes like h---. At wide open throttle u have excellent control and it's very stable.. thats about the only good thing about it.
I don't believe BW manufactures them any more...I wonder why?
Ray
