Well, we're still looking for a outboard option to power our 20' outrage. We're seriously considering a 2002 Evinrude 175 -- fuel-injected. Any and all comments are welcome. Thanks.

That would have to be a DFI Ficht engine. Mercury is offering a 5 year Warranty on a DFI Optimax if bought before 4/15/02. They cost about $11,000! I think a 5 year warranty makes a lot of sense on one of these. I think Yamaha is doing it also. And it says a lot about the mfg's confidence in their product.

Considering the Ficht history, they should also be offering the same 5 year warranty.
If not, you're taking a needless chance. And also if not, I wonder what that says.

I have a 150hp Merc EFI Saltwater, on my 20 Outrage and It's enough power but.... I believe your boat is rated for a deuce and a quarter!! Anyway, I think you'll be happy with 175, but why not a 200? The 225's are all a larger and heavier motor. The 175 and 200's are the same size and weight. Unless a 200 is a whole bunch more cash I'd go with the 200.

Go for the 200. That's what I have on my Outrage III (19'-6"). Even a little more would be nicer but the boat is stern heavy as it is.

Thanks for the advice. Question for "lhg": what is the "Ficht history" you refer to? I agree, we need a five year warranty.

I refer you to the "FICHT...fatal or curable" post under Performance. Look down the thread a bit at the quotes from the Southern Boating article I found. I agree with lhg: consider the Optimax or the HPDI Yamaha, as both engines have been out for a while now. Also, the Optimax (in addition to the rebates offered) come with a 5-year warranty. Do not discard the EFI engines, either. Depending on the amount of use you're engine will be getting, the increase in price of the DFI may not be warranted.

I have a 98 20 Outrage w/a 99 225 merc efi.
I love it! It has power to carry a load. This summer I had a family of 8 on the boat. Had plenty of power to get out of the hole and keep on plane. It also is nice in rough weather to have the tork to push and pull through the waves and current to keep control. Plus w/regular use, you keep the rmps down low and this has to make the motor last longer..

If the Fict scares you(it should not), consider the carb version Johnson.
