I am planning on buying a used 17-18 ft Whaler this season. It will most likly be 1998 or later with the ideal boat probably being a 2000. What are the big differences between the 17 and 18 Outrage? How does the 18 Dauntless compare? It seams like less of a boat from a ride standpoint (rougher ride & wetter). Also does anyone know where I can find the original specs on the boats (especially weights as I will be trailering) Whaler only lists the specs for the 2002 models. I will be boating in MA off Cape Cod in Nantucket Sound.

Thanks for

Billd,

Here's what I know.
I use a 1996 17' OR w/130 hp Evinrude, trailered and launched out of Tashmoo. Fish from Nomans to Nantucket. With a 17' OR winds 15 or better it becomes questionable, my opinion.

The 17 OR is self bailing the Dauntless is not. The CC is taller on the 17'OR and has an electronics box. The v-hull is shallower on the Dauntless. The 17'OR has 10-14 rod holders, including 4 in gunnel and 4 under gunnel. No gunnel mount rod holders in Dauntless and folding rod racks which protrude beyond gunnel on Dauntless.

Dauntless has live well option 17 OR does not. Dauntless appears to have more storage above deck. 17'OR has large in deck storage.

Here are the specs for the 1996-1998 17' OR and 1998 Dauntless, from 1998 cat. Don't have cat with 18OR info available.

17' OR 18 Dauntless

LOA 17'6" 18'2"
Beam 7' 8'
Draft 12" 11"
Weight 1700 lbs. 1800 lbs.
Max wt. cap 1820 lbs. 2400 lbs.
Swamp cap. 2600 lbs. 4000 lbs.
Person cap 7 7
Max hp 150 150
Min hp 90 90
Shaft 25" 25"
Fuel cap 56 Gallons 65 Gallons

Where are you going to launch from?

Hope this helps,
Brian

Thanks for the info. Sounds like the Outrage is for me (it may sound picky but I do not want any boat that is not self bailing). Now I just need to figure out what the real diff between the 17 and 18 is. I will be launching from Cotuit.

If you're using your boat in the waters off cape cod, an 18 OR is the minimum I'd go out in.

As you said, deep V hull, self bailing, high freeboard. I use my 18OR off Annapolis, not as rough as I've been in in the Hyannis area, and it gets past the limits of comfort when the wind is over 15 which is often

Bill, the 2000-2001 Outrage is a very different boat from the "Classic" Outrage 18/19. It is a much beamier, heavier boat with much greater freeboard. Specs are:

LOA 18'4"
Beam 8' 3"
Draft 15"
Inteior Freeboard 21"
Weight 2500 lbs.
Swamped Capacity 4000 lbs.
Minimum HP 115
Maximum HP 200
Fuel 90 Gal.

My next-door neighbor has one with a 135 Optimax and it is an awesome boat...very stable, quick and versatile.
