How much are people paying for the new 2003 Montauk. I'm looking at the 4 stroke. Took the boat for a test drive, it's got a great ride. Dealers not dealing. Thanks

What you have outlined above is basically list. Given that these boats are in short supply, which the dealers know, they are not dealing very much. Maybe you can get the dealer to throw in some extras like bottom paint (if needed) anchor, CG package, upgrade trailer ....

You are right on regarding the ride though....

Enjoy,
Anthony

This dealer is ripping you off on three items. The four stroke comes with the SS prop at no extra charge. The bow cushion should only cost $225 unless there has been a price increase on the cushion since April. The Pate fuel tank (which is the tank of choice for the montauk should only be $380. There should be no battery charge unless you are upgrading to a larger size which is not necessary.

How much for that bimini? hahahahahah!

$90 for a battery upgrade? hahahahahaha!

Docking kit? If it is a bow thruster....good deal.

Ski pylon.....never used one and the "factory" one on my buds 17 outrage bent...POS.

mduncan,

Sorry for my mis-information. It turns out I was also charged for my battery... stupid me. I have the 2 stroke so the upgraded prop wasn't on my radar. As usual Tabasco seems right on. What is a docking kit ?

Still love the boat... maybe a different dealer is in order... I need to watch mine closer, although I did catch him trying to charge almost $200 more for a custom console/RPS cover as compared to one from Mills....

Wow, that bargain price of $17,655 didn't last long. Now the boat is priced right back where the old 17-Montauk was!

Oh yeh.. that cost him.. I went with the Mills....

JimH - I don't think the price has really changed that much. BW has always charged for shipping, and that is unavoidable. But the rest of those items are best bought aftermarket and self installed, and not from a Dealer at top dollar. As an example, $460 for a 24 gallon gas tank when you can buy two Tempo 13 gallon tanks for $40 each is ridiculous, if total cost of purchase is important. Same for the 4-stroke engine, battery, fishing package, etc etc.

Avoiding a Dealer package purchase is the BEST way to save on the purchase of a new boat. BW is going out their way to make this difficult now, for this same reason. Both of my Outrages were bought new, with the boat, trailer and engines all coming from different places. Rarely would one Dealer have the exact components I wanted. I first shopped for the special order boat, then found the keel roller trailer I wanted, and then made my best Mercury engine deal, since in those days few Whaler Dealers sold Mercs. When the boat came in, I first picked up the trailer, set it up the way I wanted it, then brought it over to the Whaler dealer to have the unrigged boat dropped on it. Last stop was the engine Dealer. Saved thousands on the whole setup. Now BW is plugging that hole.

mduncan, what make and size four stroke are they offering for $2,169?
hauptjm posted 08-15-2002 04:01 PM ET (US)     Profile for hauptjm
I think I answered my own question...the charge is for the upgrade to a 4 vs. the standard 2 stroke.

I have gotten the dealer down to 22,600. The 4 stroke is a Mercury. The prop charge has been dropped. I put my down payment on it, I can not wait.

tabasco you have done a great job with your boat! love the stereo placement, very cool.
Thanks for all the feedback. I look forward to joining the club. I take delivery next week. If I’m getting ripped off now, I probably want remember it 30 years from now in my whaler.

Did you cut anything from the list you gave us to get it to $22,600? Another thing he is ripping you on is the freight. I think I paid $600 from Florida to Southern Vermont.Your located in North Carolina which should be around $400 or less for freight not $950.The docking kit......is that two fenders & two lines?

After all is said and done you will love this boat. Get the Pate tank .....it's worth the extra bucks. I would get the 27 gallon as it fits under the seat.

Good lck,
Tabasco

Hi mduncan - just curious, did the dealer give you an estimated time of arrival for your boat. I ordered mine in mid June and BW will start to make it on August 28. I don't think I'll see it until late September due to transporting it up to NJ.

I didn't drop anything on my list and have upgraded the gas to the 27 Pate tank.

The dock kit is six pfds, throw cushion, anchor and 100'line, dock line, fenders, flare kit, extinguisher, and a cool bag.

This boat was in the showroom with another one. They said they are receiving two more next week.

Another suggestion .......change the anchor line to 200 Ft and make sure you have a chain of at least 8 FT.

Have fun

I paid 17,999, before tax tag and title, for boat motor/90/2stroke and trailer. This included fishing package, vhf radio, swim platform and Coast Guard required equipment. Hope that helps.

That was the price that I heard quoted to a prospective Montauk purchaser last week when I was in getting engine parts.
