As most of us know, BW's sales figures by volume and models, are pretty closely kept secrets. But a recent news article has unwittingly let out some information on the popular 13's.

It seems that Genmar and Brunswick are bickering over who makes the most fiberglass boats. The figures are for boats 14' and over, so 13' boats are not included by the data collection firm.

But Brunswick says that they are the leader if you include the approximately 1000 boats 13' and under that they sold in the last 6 months.

So I think this means the 130 BW Sport, correct? I don't think any of Brunswick's other companies make a boat that small, not even Bayliner.

So there you have it. BW sold a little under 1000 13' Sports in the last 6 months. That sounds pretty good to me. I doubt if the 120 Impact had much effect on these figures. That's about 35 boats a week worldwide. Can the factory crank out 35 13' Sports a week?

It would be interesting to know how many sets of molds they have for the 13-foot hull. I cannot imagine making that many boats with just one set of molds.

Whaler's Number One dealer, NAUSET MARINE, sells about 200 Whalers in a year.

This spring, I spoke with Skip at Birbarie Marine in Branford, CT and he told me that they had probably sold 40 Sport 13s in the two years since they were introduced. My family spends a few weeks each summer in Orleans, MA and we see new 13 Sports on moorings everywhere. Most of these are presumably sold by Nauset Marine. I suspect the popularity has something to do with the price and the fact that they are self bailing (just dump 'em in and forget 'em).

Whether one likes the boat or not, it has clearly been a big seller for Whaler.

Nauset sells every 13 they get. Even 2 and 3 year old boats get new list price when resold. It is clearly a big seller. Why, just look at any 13 with the kids having fun on them and you will know why! Those memories are priceless.
