1995 24' Outrage kicker

I am trying to find the proper HP for a kicker to be able to troll up to 8-10kts. Believe around 10-15hp? Any commets? Saltwater only, 2 stroke ok. Also if anyone knows of any used available, I am willing to talk. Thanks, Jim

We have a 25' Parker Sport Cabin (besides our two Whalers) with a 225 hp Yamaha 2S main and a 9.9 hp Yamaha 4S high thrust kicker, for rough comparison. Our kicker combo will push the Parker about 6 kts. and that's it. If you're looking for 8-10 kts. on an OR24, I'd have to believe you'll need 15 hp or more.

a 9.9 high thrust is close to a 35 hp in thrust, you will need aleast a 20 to 25hp turning a big prop!

I have a 23 OR with twin 135ís. Recently I had the opportunity to test my boat running on one engine. My boat was full of gas, people, and gear running in a 3 ft. chop. With a 135, I could only make about 10kts. With that said, Iím not sure even 15hp kicker would give you 4 kts under the same conditions.

There's probably not much need for anything bigger than a 9.9 Hi-Thrust. The limitation is the displacement hull speed of the boat being powered. This is mostly dependent on its waterline length.
At some speed the boat will begin to climb on plane and it suddenly takes a huge amount of extra power to lift it up. You notice this when accelerating and the bow begins to rise. You typically have to give the motor a bit of throttle and let the boat begin to plane and then back off on the throttle to keep it up there at minimum planing speed.
What is happening here is the boat is trying to climb its own wave and no kicker is going to get it up there. Whatever the displacement hull speed is for a 1995 24' Outrage, thatís the top speed youíre going to get out of a kicker even if itís a 25 hp.

I wondered about that; it's pretty rare to see a kicker on a 20' to 25' boat more than 15 HP; most I've seen are 9.9.
I have seen somewhere recently (maybe here on ContinuousWave) a quick and dirty formula for hull speed and I remember being surprised at the claim that about all you had to have was the length of its waterline in order to calculate the hull speed of a given boat. Unfortunately, that's all I can remember...

Wow, I just posted this morning. Thanks guys. Found the hull formula. It's the square root of the waterline x 1.5. At 20 feet (my guesstimate for the length) it's about 6.7mph. Guess I'll have to forget fast trolling. Thanks guys for the quick reponses.
Now to go motor hunting.

Do I presume correctly that to measure the waterline, you measure the intersection of the water and the hull, following the curve of the hull from one end to the other (waterline could conceivably be longer than the length of the boat)?

kingfish, sorry for the long delay. Computer problems. I believe you're correct. The waterline could be longer than the boat.
