Don,
I seen your 23 on the boat trader web site.
I really liked the custom cover you had
made for your boat!
How was that top for traveling?
I also noticed the custom dash for your
electronics. Was that made to handle the
larger size electronics?
I read in marketplace you might move
to the Montauk 170.You should still be
able to get offshore to catch some
grouper and kings on the right days,
and also get up in the flats for trout.
Good luck,Ed Stone

Ed,

I would travel with it under 50 mph. I never had it on when traveling the Interstate. The cover was custom made in my driveway with a company that came out in a trailer. The husband measured and the wife had a sewing machine inside the trailer. I watched on and off throughout the day and was very surprised how exact the cover fit. If you noticed in the pictures, I had them make an addition to the T-Top for lifejackets and to stow my coat and whatever’s. It is supported on an angle from the front down the inside rail. This gives you an open, easy access.

The factory electronic box was not large enough for the GPS/Fishfinder. The starboard was made to the same specifications of the electronic box, screw holes and all. I wanted the Fishfinder located right in front of me to make it easier on my neck, and quick to reach. It really worked out well.

The new 170 will be fun. I am hoping I made the right decision on it to still get out and fish. We had three aboard and all on the same side leaning to see how the additional beam size would react. The wave height was around 3 foot and it was not bad. That should do it for me. I hear about the 170 in larger waves, although as you know the Gulf can get pretty sloppy anything over the 3-foot mark. Not like the Atlantic with more of a rolling sea. I will be testing it out I assure you. I have seen smaller boats out 25 miles plus on the right day.

I am looking forward to meeting you someday since you are so close. Maybe one of these Rendezvous trips.

Don
