Has anyone installed a trolling motor on their Montauk 170? I have been trying to figure out how to install one, and which type would work. A removable one seems to be out of the question due to the width limitation with the rub rail. The bow area does not seem to allow one due to the rail, unless there is a fixed mount that will drop under the rail. Any help would be appreciated.

Get the one that mounts to the engine....Great White maybe. Not cheap but effective.

Well at last I have found a solution to the trolling motor for the Montauk 170! I took some doing and a lot of trial and error. The final result is a strap on trolling motor. I purchased a transom mount Minn Kota with a bracket throat of 3-1/5 and cut the tightening screws off. Cut a slit in the bottom of the bracket face to allow for a tie strap to go through, mounted a strap fastener on the aft section of the step/seat (which has ply), and put on a strap clamp. The motor bracket fits snug to the rub rail and to the inner liner. (No play at all) I tested the trolling yesterday and it works just great. Now I can remove the trolling motor when I am not planning on using it, and use the tie down strap for other things that could blow off the boat. I have pictures of the installation if anyone wants them.

I emailed them to you. What do you think of the design? Do you have a 170?

I received your email but the link didn't make it.

My office email system is being "upgraded" and have been without reliable service for a week. I'm sure the problem is on my end.

If you could try "" it would be much appreciated.

I do own a 170, what a great boat!

Take a look at post in "Classic Whaler: Repairs/Mods" Forum on 11/26/02. Might be relevant. Good luck!
